Yeah this stage is truly exceptional. The average speeds are close to 110 km/h whereas all other stages are under 90 km/h.

Ott Tänak talks about his retirement from Rally Turkey
We caught up with the Hyundai man following his early exit in today's opening test...
"We had some kind of steering issue, but we do not know what yet. The car is still in the forest and we have to wait until it gets back to the service park. There was no warning, it was quite instant. It should not be a big worry to repair the car for tomorrow."
Asked about his title hopes, he said:
"It's not a positive so there is nothing too much to comment."

Tanak aside not much drama or attrition so far. The stages dont seem as rough as predicted with plenty of smooth fast sections. Very attractive to watch.

Abandonment of one of the teams entered in # WRC2.
Eyvind Brynildsen and Ilka Minor are out of the race after suffering a puncture on SS5.
They had no more spare wheels left on the car since before that stage they changed one of them. #WRC

I don’t have a problem with anything else any of the other drivers said yesterday at stage end. Am I the only one who actually prefers the drivers speaking their mind, rather than just forcing a smile and going “it is what it is”?
No, I am with you. Let the drivers speak their minds. Let's not "castrate" the drivers with some polished PR media talk.

A little (a lot) of frustration after this first loop
A bad choice of tires this morning with the team is wasting a lot of time when we really wanted to give everything. The race is still long and the podium within reach
dimviii

The reigning World Rally Champion was able to move the car and examined its front-right corner, but walked away after doing so.
He reported to his team at the time that he had seen a steering temperature alarm, and speaking to the media after his retirement said: “Yes, we can confirm we had some kind of steering issue.
“We don’t know exactly yet as the car is still in the forest and first we need to wait for it to come back to service to see what actually happened.”
Tänak said the problem “was quite instant”, and that although his car had not been returned to service he thought it would “not be too big [a] worry to repair” in time for Sunday, which will include the points-paying powerstage.
“I’m pretty sure we are back tomorrow,” he said.

Lappi going nowhere in this rally
Yes. I have just noticed that on SS4 he was only 0.4 s quicker than Kajetanowicz who is driving an R5 car. How can Lappi be so slow? But Loubet is even slower:

The speciality of this event is not even so much about the roughness, but also the slow pace, twistiness and technicality. But I still love that they added Kizlan, the fast and smooth stage, to add variety.

A nightmare for the Frenchman as he drops 20.4sec and slips down to third. He arrives at stage end with a front-let puncture on his Yaris.

I saw some military-looking guys in Estonia also, near the spectator area going through woods, probably looking for trespassers. Sidearms and lot of stuff attached to tactical vest (probably no body armor and definately no rifles and helmets). Takes down the urge to argue with them when they catch you.

I don’t know how can it be on turkish regulations, but on spanish and other european countries thats not a legal thing in my opinion. You are not closing a private forest like in GB, Just take a look at tour de france with in papers has not spectators or the ERC round in Rome, arround the road the fields are private owned by someone and thats the only one that can forbidden you to stay.

They can change, add or remove tyres at service, so yes. Rules only limit total number of available tyres so if they have any left, they can take an extra. Extra weight for PS vs added safety is a concern though.

And by regs, they can carry maximum of two spares. So even if they had room, they cannot take seventh. And they also have take minimum of one, too.

That's interesting as it's against regulations. Perhaps they didn't have any spares left but even so they would have to have load punctured tyre on?

2. Tänak’s title blow
Turkey was the opportunity for Ott Tänak to lay a few fingers, if not one hand, on the drivers’ title. A 33-point pre-event lead meant another dominant result for the WRC’s man of the moment would leave rivals Thierry Neuville and Ogier with a mountain to climb.
It didn’t work out that way. Opening the roads handicapped him throughout Friday, a puncture cost more time and then ECU failure in his Toyota Yaris on Saturday sidelined him for the rest of the day.
He salvaged maximum bonus points from the Wolf Power Stage after an audacious gamble to run throughout Sunday morning with no spare wheel in a bid to save weight. But that 33- point lead was slashed to 17 as the message from Ogier was ‘hands off my trophy’. https://www.wrc.com/en/news/season-2020/wrc/rally-rewind--turkey-2019/

Funny, I don't have a recollection of that incident. Must be early dementia coming on. Anyway, I checked old regulations and both 2018 and 2019 regs did have exactly the same wording (albeit under different numbering). I haven't checked Technical Reg Appendix J as to whether WRCars do have that requirement as I believe they do. Might be wrong though.

Shouldn't, provided they have engine slots left (given how few rallies we've had, that almost guaranteed certainty).
