Toyotas are now within 8,1 seconds. Will there be team orders? Will we see the same as in Sweden with Ogier and Rovanperä?

It is now just a two horse race. Ford/msport is just loads behind. It is often like this with them, start well and fade out a bit untill the next rulechange.

I have to admit, I really miss the fact we don't have a fourth team. Since we had such a long break it kind of made me forget but as much as today was interesting, it is still a bit lacking. I'm not saying Citroen are the team that should necessarily comeback but boy I hope another manufacturer comes to the WRC fold...Well aware it's less & less likely with COVID-19 but honestly the state of the championship is looking bleak for the near (& far) future. As for the rally, great event, wish we had it some 2-3 weeks earlier, nice to see Breen do so well. It seems like we're heading to a two horse race in the championship between Tanak & Ogier, if things finish here as they are. Will be very interesting to see the last 3 rallies to end the season (4 if Croatia gets the go ahead).

It's hard when you don't have the full back-up from a manufacturer and missing a driver like Evans/Tanak/Ogier.

Multiple cameras and the transmitter gear. No extra zeros.
I still find it hard to believe that the onboard kit comes up to 100k. Not going to argue though, just don't have the info. But I think that not showing "all" or at least more cars actually comes down to time between stages and keeping the transmission airplane up and running. And even when there was more time between stages to show more cars, I recall from one interview with NEP Finland, that aerial costs are the highest in production, so it might just not be viable.

Damn, Thierry surely out of the title race again this year. Well now a tree way battle.
Did he crash or was it a technical error?
Ogier : 62 + 15 = 77
Evans : 54 + 10 = 64
Tänak : 38 + 25 = 63
Rovanperä : 40 + 12 = 52
Neuville : 42 + 0 = 42
Toyota : 110 + 15 + 12 = 137
Hyundai : 89 + 25 + 18 = 132

In a very fast and fairly deep left, we were thrown into the trajectory when we were in the rope, summarized Thierry Neuville at the microphone of Olivier Gaspard, the special envoy of the RTBF in Estonia. I tried to retrieve the car, but the rear went a bit wide, and obviously something was hidden in the grass. A stone, a tree stump ... We don't know! It damaged the suspension, and the rally was over for us. It is very expensive to pay, because until then, we managed perfectly and the car worked very well. It made us feel a little more comfortable than usual on this kind of terrain. We had the ambition to do well, we followed our objective, which was to keep Elfyn and Seb behind us, but we paid dearly for a small "mistake" which cost us a lot of points this weekend. We followed the tracks, we just got kicked out of the way. We hadn't put a wheel next to the road until then. We paid it cash. "
The Belgian driver will have three more rallies, in Turkey, Sardinia and Belgium, to try to catch up on his opponents in the fight for the world title. But the task now promises to be very complicated ...
"It is sure that the fight for the title will become much more complicated for us, with three races remaining to go, resumed the vice-world champion. But we must above all be positive and tell ourselves that there is a way to do great things there and take a lot of points. But like this weekend, we are never immune to a puncture, an error or a technical problem. be able to grab some big points and stay in the title fight until the last round. "
Even if anything can happen to his opponents by the end of the event, the Belgian vice-world champion will - in the best case - able to score five points in the Power Stage on Sunday.
"We are going to attack during the Power Stage, but with our position on the road and the conditions that we are likely to find tomorrow, it will not be easy. We will try to save our tires as much as possible because the loop will be long, just take a spare tire to be as light as possible, and attack. We'll see how many points we can get from here. "

Does anyone else see the irony here? Let's look at the history. Going back to when the rules were changed to limit manufs point-scoring crews to two (nominated before the season/rally), which reduced the number of works or works-assisted WRCars. A couple of manufs quit and then Organisers start to worry about no. of top cars competing on 2nd/3rd legs. SupeRally (re-starting) then introduced, but not with leg points like used in APRC, etc. Instead, penalty times added for missed stages (grrr!) as incentive for manufs to re-start their crews. Still not exciting enough on 2nd/3rd days so Power Stage is introduced to 'sex-up' at least one stage on the last day. After all these rule changes, we now have a situation where the number of WRCars 'competing' on the last day is basically the same as it would have been without them. Please discuss.

Even without these rule changes, WRCars competing on the last day would still be less than it is on first day. When one retires, one cannot remain in competition for the win.

So you mean that Neuville driving flat out on two of the days six stages is better than him not starting at all? Remember also that this is very rare, we just remember it better when it happens. Just like WRC+ not working.

Estonia outtakes:
The good:
- Nice stages (looked nicer than on the event here last year), specially the variation both between stages and within them was nice
- Breen finally with good speed and result for Hyundai
- Both championships open, on paper Hyundai even seem to have an advantage. But still Toyota and Ogier/Evans have the points in the box now.
The bad:
- Sprint format, especially on a fast rally like this any position changes were essentially over mid way trough first day. A small isue (like a tire for Rovanpera) and it was over. While I am not a fan of very long rallies, below 300 km is clearly too little.
The ugly:
- Competition is down to two teams. Sure on gravel with lots of cleaning MSport might do some better results but I just cant see how they magically catch up with development. Off course its not their fault in the first place, but this is just how it is. In 1,5 years we went from 4 cars that could win a rally to 2, and next year is not looking any better.

Evans and Katsuta crashes weren't total write-offs. You can salvage many parts from the car and just put in a new bodyshell. Fire is always the worst because it destroys everything.
Someone on this forum asked Rich Millener about Paddon's Finland 2019 test crash and he said most of the parts were reusable.

The devastating fire which destroyed Mikko Hirvonen’s Ford Fiesta RS World Rally Car at Rally Italia Sardegna will cost his M-Sport team more than £400,000, team boss Malcolm Wilson revealed.
The Finn’s car caught fire on the road section between stages three and four on Friday afternoon and within minutes it was a blackened shell. Flames spread to the surrounding forest and the event was delayed for 80 minutes as fire crews fought the blaze.
“The financial implications to replace it are huge. You’re looking in excess of £400,000 and we don’t insure the rally cars, so that’s a big hit,” Wilson told wrc.com.

Fact? same logic: how can you tell?
no one here can be sure of this or that way. let's bring out some reasoning. in general, probably they would end the season, but maybe stop there? (as for many years now they are late on confirming their seasons.)
This year particularly, Millener said lots of time they are too tight on schedule. they ll do service on the road between rallies. are we sure they would rebuild a new one (or two?). they couldn't bring a spare part for lappi private race test...

Because simple business sense dictates that a company with as much cash in the bank and as many assets as they have would not cease if they lost two cars.
They have a business to protect and they would not stop rallying because that’s what they do.
Also, like a few have said, Eddie seems to be fixed that the cars are totally valueless after the smashes they have had, but they’re not. New shells maybe and good to go again.
And again, I thought then cars were always insured, but I might be wrong on that.

They have a business to protect and they would not stop rallying because that’s what they do.
that's it. they're selling cars and expertise as a business, not doing competition as a primary resource. protect the business may be meaning drop competition as well. we can't be sure.

IMHO, I think we had a great weekend all in all, yes I too wish it was at least 70 kms longer with Friday having proper stages, and yes I still don't see why we didn't have this rally back in August...and yes I know Hyundai said they weren't ready (and I'm guessing we might've seen a different result) and yes I'd love it if we had another team in the WRC but as it now stands, it is what it is.
However, it is up to the FIA & the promoter to make sure the WRC isn't being mistreated, they should've organized a new calendar much sooner (I mean come on, the Olympics in Tokyo got cancelled back in March, who in their right mind thought a rally could take place in November back in July..they should have cancelled it in July...and not wait for the last moment).
When you have a championship like the ERC running before you as the first non-local rallying event, it should turn on a red light... All in all though, back to the rally itself, it was really nice seeing all those battles at the sharp end, and it looks like we're going to have a thrilling last hurrah for this year.

* comes out of hibernation *
Well, I think Breen's job prospects just improved. He has always struck me a driver who could come together, given a solid run of a season or two in a decent car. Evans was like that, a couple of years ago.
If my maths is right, Rovanpera was 51.8 seconds behind Ogier after a 1 minute penalty. If he hadn't had that penalty, things could have been very interesting... Maybe some team orders, because Ogier is ahead in the championship. Maybe a fight, which I suspect Rovanpera could have won given his sensational powestage.
Loubet... is not another Rovanpera, but he could maybe turn into another Suuninen (i.e. decent speed and dependability). Hyundaui should keep him in the oven.
This year I found it hard to get into WRC, even before Covid. I am/was a Meeke fan, and I don't really care about the results anymore. The only driver who really caught my imagination lately was Oliver Solberg, because he's doing well and I liked his dad, but this was all very vague and I didn't even see his face until today. Well, he needs to do something about that hair if I'm to become a Solberg fan.
Edit: bravo the organisers for putting a rally on. Seemed like a good set of stages, though maybe the rain flattered it.

Our spectating places werent nothing spectacular but still, it was so good to see WRC cars in action after such a long break and the last time i saw them with my own eyes was Finland last year. and cmonnnn, WRC rally in my homeyard, still cant my head around that.
No complaints from me, everything worked so smoothly and i have nothing but only praise for Aava and co. The huge screens at every spectator area was just brilliant, you didnt miss any action. Funny story also with that, we were at the famous Alaküla jump on the first pass in the morning. So, we were watching the huge screen and waiting Ogier to arrive on the jump. But the sound was so loud from the speakers and i had forgotten the fact that the live picture is behind the real time, the next moment Ogier flew past us and we basically completely missed him :D
Really surprised by the speed of the Hyundais. I mean, Im not surprised that Ott was fast, it was expected but they all were fast, Breens effort and praise about the car says a lot.
Disappointment of the rally for me was Gryazin, and apart from Kaur and Virves (who were really good), i kind of expected a little bit better performance from our other locals as well i guess? or maybe my expectations were too high, dont know. Loubet and Katsuta were also good, especially Katsuta, such a shame about that roll but the speed was very good from him.
Anyway, Ott is back in the title hunt now, although that Monte 0 point rally is hurting him a lot with such a short season. 4 different winners on 4 rallies this season. Its gonna be a tight fight until the end.
And he has now won rallies with 3 different manufacturers.

EstWRC said it all basically. Rally was organized super well, big screens with All Live in every spectator area was just brilliant. That meant that no one was in their phone looking for split times info, watching all live and this meant that you had internet for other important things (checking your route for next stage etc). Also even if you didn't have any info about where to go, there were bookmarks? (don't know how to call them) in Waze so you just had to search your stage and it directed you to the correct parking lot. Also big praise for spectators - everything was so calm, people were friendly, no problems at all. There will always be some dude who has drank too much but this I saw so few it wasn't a problem for me.
Very well thought and organized event! Hopefully this won't be just one time event! :)

Just out of curiosity, how did it work with the spectator restrictions? Was there any chance to spectate "illegally" (either without ticket, or outside the desiganted spectator area)? To me it seems almost impossible to close and control all of the access roads to the stages. On WRC Live I've seen several smaller groups of people in the middle of the forests, so perhaps these people were "extra" above the 16000 tickets?

Organizers did good job to hold any unwanted people out - there was a bunch of guys with dirt bikes who scanned the areas day and night and lot of surveillance personell and equipment (helis and drones) from police and border guard.
Organisers have indicated that they found some people that were ignoring those restrictions but they all were escorted out of the area with no bigger incidents. Those scattered groups of people that were visible from the live feed was most likely locals who live around the stages and their visitors or accredited media personnel. Afaik every local inside the perimeter was contacted and they had an opportunity to register some friends and family members who got access to the stages while the event was running.
Edit: While scrolling Instagram I found this account of one of the bike guys. You can get a glimpse of the job they did + one good video about a disguised camper van that they found: https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17881128886782326/

2192/5000
"What does Ott bring us? One more victory !, smiled Andrea Adamo at the microphone of Olivier Gaspard, RTBF's special envoy in Estonia. He brings us more than that obviously, because he has not signed with us for a piece of bread! All the drivers who work with us bring something. He has the experience of having driven cars from other manufacturers (the Ford Fiesta WRC and the Toyota Yaris WRC, editor's note), and when you have in your team the technical experience of two guys like Thierry and Ott who work together, in the same direction, it is very precious. If we had two idiots who fight and who do not say things to each other, It would be different! For me, our team's season has changed in Mexico, where on Sunday we did a very long debriefing of ... six hours, I think. We put everything on the table, we got together. telling all our truths, we made a list of everything that needed to change from a technical point of view on the car. "
The Italian boss of the Hyundai team also returned to the weekend of Thierry Neuville, in a fight for the podium before being thrown out of the line in a bend that had widened, tearing a wheel and to abandon. A disaster in the race for the world title?
"For me, a disaster is something else, it's the Covid-19 pandemic, underlined Andrea Adamo. Thierry had a difficult weekend, it's one thing, a disaster, it's another thing. In Turkey, he will have a favorable starting position, because the sweep will be important. I remind you that we are here above all to win the Constructors' World Championship, and he was the fundamental person last year. to allow us to win it. He is going all out for that. For me, Thierry, he is top. He demonstrated again this weekend that when he has a car that allows him to go fast on roads like in Estonia or Finland, he can fight. He was third, next to the others! I will tell him again: he deserves to win the World Championship, because he goes fast everywhere. "

Tänak and Neuville race in the same team. After Rally Estonia, they both have 13 event wins, they both have won 10 different WRC rallies and they both have 234 stage wins. Looks like a draw, but only one is a world champion...

that's good its getting some positive feedback.
i followed it online and i think it was a great event. i really liked the roads and surrounding scenery.
i think the organizers really did an amazing job to be able to host this event at this time. i would also like to see it back on the WRC calendar (next year if possible )

Yes and everyone behaving, 90 km/h is allowed, plus 2-3 or smth like that.
But there was a lot of misbehaving from spectators, over 304 infringements, mostly speeding.

So Estonian Healt Board has announced one of the visitors has COVID and was attending the rally with RP6 pass:
SS1 (Tartu vald), SS3 (Karste), SS10 (Kääriku) ja SS14 (Nõuni) . Lets hope that it won't lead to a bigger outbreak!

It was highly probable that among those 16K people attending plus hundreds organizers and volunteers someone will have it. Thats the reason for all this hand sanitizing, mask wearing and splitting into smaller groups. Lets see how it developes, hopefully it will not lead to another major outbreak.

Walking through forests, bushes, streams, wet shoes, thorn wounds. It's actually very much related to experiencing rallying.

Gus Greensmith told the AR Podcast he was out of a rally car for 5 months. He confirmed that M-Sport was hit hard by the lockdown. Therefore rally testing which is paid for by Malcolm (Wilson) himself had to be cut.
And even his (pre-Estonia) test in Greystoke Forest was badly disrupted by technical issues.
Thus his drive on Rally Estonia was vitually just for 'seat time' and no risks.

I guess now it is certain that this one infected visitor was all the covid we had on this event. No new infections reported, no spread inside RP6 group or in any other group. So all these measures seemed like they worked as intended. Sure you cant be absolutely sure that all visitors are "clean" when they come, but you can make efforts to prevent or limit the spread when infected people come. Others should learn from it and organize more rallies :)
