Tour Di Sardegna!

Not really, all the action happens in the North end of the island. In 2015 and before the rally operated on a broader area.

Sardegna is run as a four day event but the itinerary is changed.

- Both spectator stages are dropped
- Tergu-Osilo brought back (wasn't initially planned)
- Monti di Ala is dropped
- Monte Baranta moved to Sunday
- Friday and Saturday morning stages run in different configuration, two stages repeated during morning.
- Friday afternoon stages aren't repeated until Saturday afternoon
- Overall length decreased to 264 km

SOLBERG AND MIKKELSEN TO DEBUT PIRELLI’S WRC TYRES
Former world champion Petter Solberg will return to WRC action at Rally Italia Sardegna (8 - 11 October) when Pirelli debuts the tyre to be used in next year’s FIA World Rally Championship.

The Norwegian will drive a Pirelli-liveried Citroën C3 World Rally Car in the spectacular rally-closing Wolf Power Stage in Sardinia. The car will be fitted with Pirelli’s latest-generation Scorpion KX tyres.

Solberg, who won the 2003 world title with the Italian company and won Sardinia’s inaugural WRC event in 2004, will be co-driven through the 6.89km Sassari - Argentiera test on Sunday lunchtime by Pirelli development driver Andreas Mikkelsen.

The duo will be first into the gravel stage, showcasing the new tyre before the competitive action begins.

Mikkelsen will debut the Scorpion KX tyre in public three days earlier at the rally’s Olmedo shakedown test on Thursday morning. He will give passenger rides through the 3.79km stage to selected journalists to demonstrate the capabilities of the tyre on rough gravel.

Must they be in entrylist to be driving the PS as #1 car?

Must they be in entrylist to be driving the PS as #1 car?

Put a siren on it, and make it the last control-car for that stage? :)

Or, maybe just put a mic on Mikkelsen, drivers tend to scream when they are riding along!

mknight
28th September 2020, 15:09
For result, I'd pick Solberg for SD and Mikkelsen for PS (which he won last year).

Then again teams would scream if there is any chance of losing points (on Sardinia even early cars can get good PS times), so guess that's the reason they went with this order.

So it´s not technical driving in Estonia or Latvia on very fast gravelstages?

And at asphalt he was pretty good straight away.

For example Kalle has said about his WRC progress that he's doing fine on the fast stuff but still struggles on technical sections.

A technical gravel rally also includes things like tyre management, driving in ruts, watching out for stones etc. which are all new things in addition to finding the right pace and technique for slower corners and narrower roads.

Rallyper
2nd October 2020, 18:29
Historically we saw slow drivers doing well in slow rallies, being nobodies when it matters on fast stages.

So for me, slow rallies doesn´t prove anything about how good drivers are...

so, rallying week finally. the interest seems kinda low after that long break we had with COVID, or is it just me?

Dont know how the weather exactly will be but i guess it isnt has hot as in June.

Speaking about favourites then 4 previous winners are all in Hyundai this year. Tänak has always been very strong on this event and won in 2017, its one of his favourites too, Sordo has a good starting position again and we all remember that epic battle and win for Thierry in 2018 over Ogier, he won also in 2016.

Evans is sweeping this time, last year Ogier was first on the road but he crashed into that big rock on SS4, before that he was already 27 secs down from the leader. After that Tänak was first on the road for the whole day and he ended up being 3rd at the end of the day, just 11 secs down from Sordo but watching the results it seems the first two stages were very bad for the frontrunners, after that not so much. On Saturday Tänak won all 6 stages and we all know what happened on Sunday on the last stage.

Well, anyway, Thierry has won this event 2 times past 5 years and he has a good starting position too. Ogier won this event back in 2015 the last time and second starting position isnt also the best on first day. Tänak has a decent starting position and has been always very strong here. Evans just needs to mind his own business to collect some points but the three guys, Neuville, Ogier and Tänak definitely will go for a win.

Who wins? i have no idea, Thierry should be the strongest candidate but as we saw last time there can be a lot of surprises.

AnttiL
5th October 2020, 18:11
You said it all, Neuville and Sordo are really the top favourites. In the past we've seen drivers like Eric Camilli and Kevin Abbring post their maiden stage wins because of a good starting position, could we see Katsuta do the same now? :D

Then, it's also possible it will rain...the forecasts right now are only giving small random rains here and there throughout the week, but we know it could change quickly.

“That was the hardest event I’ve done,” he said quietly. “It was complicated. I didn’t have so much confidence in the car, the notes, nothing. It was tough. Places where you would think the grip could be quite nice, there was none.”

At least Kalle found Sardegna hard last year, and he had done Mexico, Argentina, Portugal and Italian national rallies by that point. Let's see what comments Oliver gives at the stage ends (if we hear any...)

Yes, it is a tight and narrow corner. However, watching the other drivers' in-car footage there appears plenty of distance to reduce speed after the flying finish, so either Kalle was carrying much more speed at FF or he just didn't switch off enough when he passed the boards.

Very tricky corner actually, when you arrive it's very steep downhill (steeper than you'd expect judging onboard videos), the corner is blind and tighter than you would expect. Very important to have it good in the notes, apparently even if it's after the finish... :D I was there in 2017 when it was included in the shakedown stage. Prokop and some others went off there, it was quite a mission to get Prokop's car out, as he was parked on top of a huge boulder :D In 2015 when it was included in the stage of Monte Baranta, Yazeed Al-Rahji went off on the same spot.

"The course had changed a lot compared to usual, in June. The sun is back, it is quite hot, the majority of the course is likely to dry out. The ground is waterlogged, we would probably have more ruts on the second pass. We will be 5th in the starting order: it's much less advantageous given the weather conditions. I think there will be very little gap between the cars. The key, this It will be to go to the end and be consistent. The rallies are quite short, you have to be on top from the start despite an ultra complicated first special. I appreciate this rally. My team too because Hyundai has won this event several times. If we win, it will be difficult to jump into the sea, it seems pretty cold to me. We worked well in Turkey, we will have to be on top again, "Neuville clarified at our microphone.

And Gilsoul added: "We have won here twice, but the parameters are very different this year. You have to adjust the car accordingly. It's a course where there is technique, you have to drive hard, you have to provoke the car, etc. The championship is truncated, we suffered two withdrawals because of mechanical problems: we are a little behind. We cannot leave by saying to ourselves 'it's all or nothing'. It doesn't work in rallying. We have to have our pace, sort out all the details. We have to do as usual and hope that everything works well. "

What they show doesn't look that bad, I think they're exaggerating, if not they chose the wrong places to display... It doesn't look more narrow compared to many other sections in Sardinia. Castelsardo has a very narrow section, so does the Tula stage.

Interesting to see how Evans will approach the rally.

He has a good points lead in the Ch'ship and he could elect to have a safety-first approach.

It may be he sees it as vital to come out still leading as:
1. Ypres may still be cancelled
2. If it does take place being first on the road could be crucial

SS1/3 is something different than usually in WRC and also in this rally. It's really super narrow, quite soft surface, rocks everywhere. Last downhill section was already quite damaged during the recce. Those are not the roads which are frequently used for sure. Most tricky stage for sure and narrower than Sunday ones.

Hyundais found something in service

Real pace comes from second run, because at the moment front-runners are cleaning a lot and will loose to Suninen and Sordo

Ott was wearing the hat and mask now at stage end. Does this mean his morning's issue was his own fault and he's now feeling guilty towards the team? :D

Hardly any logic, but he doesn't usually wear the hat. And I bet there's a correlation with not bothering to wear the team's hat when being mad at the team because the car broke down and wearing the hat because you are grateful to the team for whatever reason.

DirtFish is his ,,head sponsor''.. Others aren't wearing Hyundai's or Toyota's caps either.. They have RB ones..

Would've been a great time from Thierry if he didn't lose a big chunk of time with that stall. Car just simply wouldn't start.

Whiny Seb is back. Why didn't he retire the last event in order to get a better road position here if it's that important?

Did Ogier expect a running order change at midday like previously ?

This time I understand him. In Estonia they changed the starting order for the afternoon loop on friday, this time not, why?

Rules don't allow it, start order is ruled for entire day (championship order for first day, provisional classification reversed for sunsequent days). I am not quite sure why it was done in Estonia, likely organisers got special dispense from FIA to do it.
