Norbert Herczig has told his FIA European Rally Championship rivals to get ready for “very good stages” when his native Hungary hosts the ERC title decider next month.

Rally Hungary, which takes place from 8-10 November, is new to the European roster for this season and Herczig, the four-time national champion and double ERC podium finisher, reckons there’s a treat in store.

“They are very good stages,” said Herczig, who drives a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 for the MOL Racing Team. “There’s a mixture of very fast and very narrow but quite good quality. Some stages a very tricky but it’s a very good rally and it will be a very good experience for everybody.”

Ferenc Vincze will start Rally Hungary as a national champion and he truly believes that he can fight against the best ERC drivers. He has nothing to lose at the race around Nyíregyháza, there is no pressure at all on him and his co-driver, Igor Bacigal.

How do you prepare for the home leg of the European Championship?

‘I talked to my colleagues and many of them thought we did not have any chance against the top drivers. But I believe that we must try to fight. I have never been at such a race, although I have never raced without any pressure like now either. I would like to go fast and take some more risk that I took during the season. I trust in my good performance and that we can get to the top of the field. The stages were high class already last year, the best ones of the season. Although I have not gone through the regulations yet, but since now on I will have time for it and I am looking forward to seeing what I will be capable of.’

It is indeed pretty damning; but I'm not sure what can be done. Motorsport UK (formerly the MSA) have never financially supported drivers like other ASNs. And what is a prospective sponsor likely to get out of it - 30min highlights on Eurosport late at night. A local non league football team will have better media coverage most probably.

TV and Eurosport isnt everything.

A sponsor could use his image and pictures of his car in advertising showing their brand is associated with a rally champion.

He prefers to see Lukyanuk's lines and maybe the roads will actually be a little cleaner with a fast car sweeping some of the leaves and surface muck.

Plus he does not have to beat Lukyanuk.

Eddie, I can't imagine any wet asphalt rally where not starting first is an advantage. The simple fact is that even one car can throw a looot of mud on the road if the driver wants to do so and I am sure Luky knows that and will take the advantage of making the life of his opponents harder.

Question to Chris Ingram from István Simon (Vezess.hu, Hungary):

Chris, according to the weather forecast this weekend, there should be a lot of fog and a lot of rain, which is quite similar to the conditions you have in the UK. Is it an advantage for you ?

Chris Ingram, Toksport WRT

Yeah, it’s perfect. I think I drive faster in the fog and the darkness because I don’t get distracted by things at the side of the road. It’ll be difficult but we like these conditions so I’m quite happy with that.

Q. I mean, you must have a lot of experience in these conditions?

Chris Ingram, Toksport WRT

Yeah definitely, like some of the stages look like Rally GB in the Welsh forests. It’s so dirty, I’ve never seen a Tarmac rally [like this]. These guys, I know Alexey doesn’t have that much experience in such horrific, s****y weather.

If Lukyanuk takes all points, Ingram needs 10 points to become champion. If he's third on this leg, he'd only need 5 more points, which would make 7th place good enough for the title. Anyway quite sad for people of Eurosport to have a champion who didn't win any event.

"Heading to Rally Hungary, a new addition to the ERC roster for 2019, 25-year-old Ingram leads the standings by 19 points from Habaj with Lukyanuk just nine points further back. Based on those numbers alone it might appear that Ingram is in the ascendency, but it’s certainly not that simple.

A maximum of 39 points are up for grabs in Hungary and with ERC drivers counting their best six scores over the season, Habaj and Lukyanuk are very much in the hunt despite the gap to Ingram.

While Habaj and Lukyanuk are set to drop four and three points respectively from their eventual totals, Ingram could end up discounting 12 points from his final score following the finish in Nyíregyháza."

It'd be one thing if it were happening out of sight, but this happens in full view of the live broadcasting helicopter, which the idiots all wave at... Okay, if he'd been able to out pace Lukyanuk and be as consistent as he was, we'd be talking about him like we talk about Rovanpera or Oliver Solberg, but he often wasn't too far off Lukyanuk's pace and didn't leave you feeling like he was constantly on the edge of throwing it all away.

It's not salt, get over yourself.... It's the reality of the situation. Nobody is knocking the lad, well done to him.... It's the points system that's totally flawed!

The points system is already heavily skewed towards a flat out driver. How many more dropped scores would you request or how much bigger would you make the points gap between 1st and 2nd to reward speed/unreliability against consistency? I don't know how much you'd need to change the system to get Lukyanuk out of his bad luck? It is what it is...

Sorry but You can't be more wrong. The point system absolutely favours the flat-out drivers over regular finishers!

It doesn't favour, it rewards, as winners should be rewarded.

Nah, I don't agree with that. Not counting all events always favours those who go flat out no matter what because it gives them jokers. I don't like this type of rules to be honest (in whatever championship).

Won the Championship though! Don't get me wrong, I think we all love Lukyanuk, but I don't see what Ingram did wrong, he did what he had to do. Okay, if he'd been able to out pace Lukyanuk and be as consistent as he was, we'd be talking about him like we talk about Rovanpera or Oliver Solberg.

Most sense that’s been talked in this thread.

Should remember also that Lukyanuk only took one win this season, this is not some great injustice.

It’s a shame the competition was not stronger this year though, ERC still has a lot going for it. I feel if they can develop the live streaming product a little more then this may help attract more drivers/sponsors. These days it doesn’t need to be on conventional tv, especially if it remains free to watch as it is on Facebook/YouTube.

It would be nice if the points system was simpler, but the other advantage of this system is that drivers can feasibly compete for the title even if they miss one or two events.

But at least all the championship contenders were competing this weekend and the title wasn’t decided by who was on the entry list.

I'm not favouring anybody, teams or drivers..... I said the points system is flawed... You know it is when you have to get the calculator out to work out the system.... It needs to be tidied up and simplified.

Ah okay sorry, completely agree on that front. It's way too complicated, particularly the way points are dished out to the top 7 after each Leg, on top of everything else...

Congratz to Chris and Ross but this thing is riddiculous. This title is a farce and it is worth close to nothing... I guess Oliver would have won it with only 4 events.

Maybe, maybe not. So far we have mainly seen Oliver compete on fast gravel roads so it's a bit of a stretch to say he would win the title just because he was super fast in Latvia.

I was at Rally Hungary as photografer, here is my point of view:

I fully agree with what Lukyanuk and Lehus said...It is pure luck if you come over the stages without puncture or not....yes luck is part of the game, but should not decide the Championship :(

BUT from a Spectator (or photografers) point of view, it was one of the most spectacular Events i ever visited....everything could happen in every corner...different lines, different approches, really intersting to watch!

Sure, the weather was a key factor, but in Mid November, i think it is not a big Surprise that it is wet, cold and foggy...so the mixture of weather conditions AND much more Gravel Parts than everybody knows was the Problem!

Maybe they should think about a complete day on gravel with only a few Tarmac parts and the second day on Tarmac without gravel parts, than the crews will be there with the right suspension and the right tires and Luck is not the decider...??

I am sad for Lehus and Lucas that they did not make it, but it was not just in this race, Lucas told it, luck was the whole season not on theire side :(

But in the other Hand i have to say big respect to Chris and Ross and the Toksport Team. Who stays so cool and (almost) free of mistakes in a Rallye like this with sooo much pressure is really worth to be a Champion!

Re Solberg - he has a very famous WRC driver father with money and sponsors. He's been in cars since childhood and had the chance to drive all kinds of machines and do lots of events and many km's of testing.

He (and Rovanpera) show exactly what Ingram hasnt had, and why his achievement is all the more remarkable.

Ingram's father hasnt been able to fund him since his first cheap rally car. Since then he's relied on doing well and getting team drives at junior level, then winning prizemoney, and more recently going all over the country promoting himself to sponsors.

In ERC first he had to fight Eurosport to get his U27 prizemoney. Then he was seriously ill in his first year in an R5. This year his main sponsor dropped out at the last minute. Then he lost the U28 €100k prize by 0 3s !

Every rally entry hss been in doubt and there has been no money for testing or repairs in case of a crash. But he has battled on.

Whatever luck he's had, no-one has deserved it more.

Like already said, it’s sad to see the fastest crew loosing once more, but Ingram, Whittock and Toksport surely deserve congrats for achieving the title. Hats off to their ‘never give up’ spirit!

Btw, gravel sections on a tarmac stage can be acceptable but what’s the point of using those V profiled concret roads? Even on a dry day they seem to be worthless and dangerous.

Luky is so good that he need to get promoted up to WRC2 for 20.

If he is so good, why can't he win ERC, against 44-year-old Habaj and an unexperienced 25-year-old Brit running on low budget?

Congratulations to Chris Ingram and Ross Whittock!!!

Really? This title is a farce? Oliver is competing in American championship against old American gentlemen and semi-retired drivers from Europe. Is that not a farce?

We are one year later. Oliver took part in 5 events and still didn't win it. Is this title now worth something? :D
