Firts time I am going to Catalunya for the WRC.
Could someone recommend good spots, if possible with videos, to watch the rally?

Thank you so much.

Loeb and Sordo with Neuville : https://twitter.com/HMSGOfficial/status/1168493817558917121?s=19

It was pretty much in the cards since Loeb didn't drive Germany. Only way that could change was if Mikkelsen was much faster in Germany than Sordo.

The big question here is if Hyundai will introduce some changes to the tarmac car to suit Loeb/Mikkelsen before that. If not we might get another repeat of the terrible performance both showed in Corsica/Germany.

Sordo and Neuville can drive that car on tarmac. Mikkelsen and Loeb cannot (/haven't so far)

mknight
2nd September 2019, 19:18
Maybe you should read what I wrote one more time.
I am saying that Loeb (on Corsica) and Mikkelsen (in Germany) had terrible performance cause the tarmac car doesn't suit them.

If Hyundai doesn't actually change the car to suit them it won't matter much which one of them drives. The problem is that Hyundai does not have much reason to do that as long as Neuville and Sordo do well, they might even risk making the car worse for Neuville/Sordo to if they make it suit Loeb/Mikkelsen more.

deephouse
3rd September 2019, 12:32
Why changing the car. Can't they just setup the each car for their liking? OK the setup have a room for improvements but altogether they will not ruin it for others (I mean Neuville-Sordo). And if it's unproven that Loeb-Mikkelsen are not making results with ''best setup'' they have a job to do to find setup that would make something out of it. I mean We are talking about nine time wdc champion and a three time wrc event winner. I guess they have a little bit of knowledge now after so many years in wrc.

mknight
3rd September 2019, 14:26
It seems they can't setup the car for the "smooth" driving style for some reason. But it is also true that until this summer it didn't look like they invested any serious effort to it. First with the two testing tarmac rallies for Loeb there seems to be some will to change things. Whether things actually change is another question.

AnttiL
3rd September 2019, 15:20
They can't make drastic changes without homologation jokers, and that's always irreversible, so it could potentially take away the speed Neuville and Sordo have now. Citroen might have done the same to their tarmac speed (or then they've spent their effort on gravel and all the other teams have gotten better on tarmac)

I believe things like this can be requested by the tv crew in order to get better sceneries for their shots and better terrain for making a live broadcast.

When run in this direction, La Mussara has a super fast ending section. Maybe they will cut that shorter as well, because 20 km is quite lot for a power stage these days.

So far Citroen - Ogier & Lappi, Ford - Evans & Suninen, Hyundai - Neuville, Loeb & Sordo, Toyota - Tanak, Meeke, Latvala, Katsuta.

I've been to RACC just once and then we were made to walk ridiculous routes (uphill) to get to the service park. I'd suggest you ask this directly from the organization, it could save you a lot of trouble.

DoN_cz
9th October 2019, 11:54
Thanks, I've just done that.

I have one more question/request for tips. Where would be the best opportunity to get closest to the cars (static/parked up) without too much hassle? Obviously service park is not the ideal place (too many people and you have the barriers between you and the cars). As I've seen from several YouTube videos (Germany, Corsica, Finland), usually the crews stop and prepare few hundred meters before starting the shakedown - and people get to walk around the cars. But I don't know if that's the case for Spain as well and also I think it is quite shame to sacrifice shakedown for this (one less gravel stage, which is the main reason we are there for). So what about the area before/after the start/finish of Salou superspecial (which I'm not too keen to see, so no problem to sacrifice that)? Or perhaps some regroup? Or last idea that we did in Poland few years back - follow the cars from service to the first stage on Sunday morning and at some point (~1km before the stage) they stop to check pressures and do final preparations.

Spain test crucial for Ogier https://www.wrc.com/en/wrc/news/october-2019/ogier-test/page/6741--12-12-.html

Spain test crucial for Ogier https://www.wrc.com/en/wrc/news/october-2019/ogier-test/page/6741--12-12-.html

Citroen’s hopes of bringing new parts to last week’s Wales Rally GB were spoiled by complications surrounding the homologation process. That new suspension will have to wait until next season.
Team principal Pierre Budar said: “The rules for the homologation are the same for all the teams. It’s just very frustrating and disappointing to know these parts make the car quicker, but we can’t use them.
“The drivers have run with them in the test and they like them. We know the car would be faster and giving more confidence if we had them on, but the rules are the rules.”

Didnt know this. It is indeed crucial for him but i wonder how many miracles they can make with just one test, they were really nowhere in Germany.

Time will tell.

AnttiL
9th October 2019, 19:08
Corsica had a lot of smooth, wide and fast sections this year and Citroen's were especially lost there. Basically the only stage where Ogier was fast was the rough and long stage and there won't be sections like that in Catalunya.

mknight
9th October 2019, 19:41
As the situation looks now I actually expect MSport to have clearly the fastest car on tarmac in Spain. They were probably fastest already in Corsica and also in Germany Suninen's times were great.
Toyota pace does seem to be slightly reduced by the wing changes and Spanish tarmac is where this should be very noticable.
Hyundai (for Neuville and Sordo) did seem to be on Toyota level in Germany, but those stages are mostly quite a bit different from Spanish tarmac. Question is if they come with some more drastic changes now that Loeb has done two testing rallies and Neuville is going to do another one this weekend.

Depends how much you want to see, you can see lots with no car, shakedown is on Thursday morning which is within easy walking distance from the town, start and finish takes place along the front on thurs evening/sunday afternoon aswell as a special stage on Saturday afternoon, service park is just a 10 minute walk out of town at port adventura where the cars visit each day several times, all info available on rally racc website.

yeah AnttiL, im always looking from there, thats what i meant when i said i looked the stage regions.

Anyway, the long awaited rally week has finally arrived. If we look back at 2017 and 2018, then Citroen has been the winner both times. So in that sense they should be the favourites, but we know it isnt as easy as that, especially with their recent struggles on tarmac. But Ogier and Lappi both sound quite upbeat and say they found something on the tests.

Out of the TOP3, Ogier has had the best record the last 2 years, 2nd in 2017 and also 2nd in 2018. Although last year he was only 7th!!! after the first day and 39 secs down off Tänak. Also he has won this rally 3 times with the previous gen cars.
Neuville was 4th last year and retired in 2017 on final day. TBH if we look at his past results then it really isnt his strongest event.
Tänak was 3rd in 2017 and 6th last year but was leading before the puncture dropped him to 6th.

So, if we look at the records and if Citroen indeed has found something, then Ogier should be very very strong this weekend. But this is all speculative. It will be interesting to see the tacktics, i think Ott will be driving the first stages to his own pace and he will see what Ogier and Neuville are doing. Ogier and Neuville must anyway go flat-out right from the start. The rain should help the frontrunners, they wont have so much loose stuff as with the dry.

Evans showed amazing speed in Wales and i think he is the dark horse here. He has great starting position for Friday and he is very strong on tarmac, was 3rd last year on this rally.
Same story with Sordo basically.
Meeke has won this event so he knows what to do.
Loeb is back and won it last year and has won it multiple times.

So all in all, it seems to me we will have hell of a weekend :bounce:

mknight
21st October 2019, 17:01
Sordo and Loeb can easily lead after Friday, only problem can be if stages don't dry fast enough. Hyundai's (and especially Loeb's) performance on dry tarmac is a big uncertainty though.

I expect Evans to be the fastest on dry tarmac and should be able to win the rally if he doesn't loose too much on friday.

Toyota's will be somewhere in the middle. I expect Tanak will take it a bit easier with cutting.
Ogier is a huge uncertainty, all depending on what changes are done to the car.

Eli
21st October 2019, 17:21
Don't think Loeb will be as fast as some people think, if you remember in Corsica, he has struggled to get to grips with the car, sure him smacking the suspension on the very first stage didn't help, but the i20 is a totally different package to what he drove all these years with Citroen. if anyone from the Hyundai camp has a chance to claim a win it's Sordo, he has come second countless times on this event and even showed us back in 2016 he's no slouch on those Friday gravel stages. As for Neuville, I would honestly just settle for a podium, as his first WDC chances are next to none...and it's really important for Hyundai to get that first manufacturer title.

As for Ogier & Citroen, I sincerely hope they found something in those tests that will at least give him the tools to challenge Tanak, but the way I see it, it's now Tanak's championship to lose. Hopefully I'm wrong and it will go down to the wire down under, but in all honesty, Tanak does deserve this title, he has been the most consistent of challengers this year, and with having 6 wins, it really does cast your mind back to Ogier's years with VW.
In any case, we have a fascinating weekend in prospect.

Prepare to stay offline. At least this was the case with us in 2017 at the places where we were. For a long time we didn’t know the results at all because they don’t have radio either like in Estonia or Finland.

So I went the old school way and took time with my stopper. Found out later I was pretty spot on :D

Remember that even in Finland internet is not working near stages during Rally, so don´t expect to see live videos...
Be happy if you could see results.
Why would you go to Catalonia/Stages to watch AllLive, enjoy real LIVE ;)
And take times with your phone, it´s way more interesting.

Would be weird to watch All Live in the forest...radio is perfect because it doesn't occupy your hands or eyes. Spectating rally is social, while even watching the results on the phone can be unsocial. Even if you went to the stage alone, you'll usually find someone to talk rallying with.

Re C3 WRC new aero:

"The French firm hasn’t homologated the new parts for use at this week’s mixed surface encounter and a spokesman from the Versailles-based team confirmed there would be no aero updates for the Salou event.

It was the same situation last time out in Britain when Citroën had new suspension options which it couldn’t utilise for homologation reasons."

"For sure, the pressure is on, there's no doubt about that," said Tanak, for whom a win in Spain on Sunday afternoon would be enough for him to be crowned for the first time.

"We need to deliver and now we really need to deliver. We need a big performance.

"We had a good test and generally the feeling is quite good with the car, so now we have to see.

"I guess the focus will be on me, but at the same time Ogier and Thierry will have to go all-out. There's no doubt about that from their side.

"But for me, there's no need to risk everything. I don't need to do anything if the feeling is not there.

"If I'm comfortable with the car then I'm sure we can make the fight, but let's see how it goes."

To be fair, Tänaks Toyota team mates haven't really done a mega job thus as support and team effort goes.

If we look at pure team effort Hyundai should win the team buckle. No other team has pulled together like they have (ok, maybe Msport but they lack machinery and budget). The other teams are individuals fighting for themselves.

In front of the media tonight, the Alsatian driver spoke for a long time about this event, so important for him, since he has 9 victories on this rally, including the last acquired, by surprise, last season.
What is your goal for this weekend?

"The goal is to race for the Constructors' Championship, for me and Dani, anyway. Thierry still has something played personally. Anyway, to score points, you have to make a result. So the best is not to think about it and roll. "
With the dantesque conditions of recognition, the first day may be very difficult.

"There is a risk of finding things on the road that we have not seen compared to recognitions, such as stones that fell from the mountain for example. Potentially, there may be surprises like that. I think it will dry again on the surface but it will stay wet underneath. Leaving behind is not going to be as good as we would have liked if it was dry. So I just hope it's going to be too much over the passages and we're losing time as we go along. "
How do you feel at the wheel of this Hyundai?

"I drove in tests, the feeling was pretty good on the ground, but also on the asphalt. I did a little rally last weekend to get my legs up and it went pretty well. "
Are you a little worried before departure?

"There is no reason to be more worried than last year, I drove more this season. What worries me a little bit is this first day, and I'm really scared that it gets ointment over the cars. So I hope it will dry up well. "
How has the car evolved since the beginning of the season?

"Since the beginning of the season, we have advanced a lot on things like geometry, suspensions, shock absorbers, differentials, especially the central, the direction ... and everything put end to end, I think the car is better. It is well balanced, and easy to drive, overall it's pretty good. "
Is it possible to repeat your victory last year?

"Last year, we did not expect it. After, it's not easy. We see that the Toyota is very strong on asphalt like on the ground and last year, I win, but Tänak was far ahead before dying. There are always plenty of settings that make it possible to win, but we know it's never easy.

Is the pleasure still intact?

"I do nice shopping, without overloading the agenda, it suits me well. Between the Vosgien, Alba and Spain just before, it occupies well, plus the races at Le Castellet, it makes me a dozen races and we are not far from a complete program. "
Are you afraid of seeing big gaps on Friday?

"In fact, we do not know the conditions that we will have. It is sure that if it dries on the surface and that the fat comes out from below, leaving where we go, what normally and we always hope, is an advantage, it can quickly turn against us, and the gaps can be large indeed. If it gets ointed behind, it's dead. "
Have you already discussed next season and your program?

"Frankly, we have not thought about it yet. The Monte Carlo yes, logically perhaps, it will be necessary to agree with Dani again. But frankly, we did not talk too much about it. I would have liked to do this one (Spain) and Corsica, but these two will not be there anymore. Potentially Chile, especially since it went well this season.
Is it possible to see you in the Var in a month?

Again, this is something we have not necessarily discussed. But like every year, the Var at the end of the season is a possibility, so why not.
In what position do you find yourself compared to last year?

"I know the car better, the terrain better. When I saw last year's times, I can not understand how I could win. I did not do a lot of scratchs but I was regular without being hyper-efficient. I watched the times and I struggled to find myself in the list! "

Not as much of a super talent, didn't start as young. But has a lot of speed, needs just much experience. He doesn't have as massive backing behind him compared to what Petter or Jouhki can arrange. He's also driving under Grönholm's GRX team, remember that Sebastian is Marcus's cousin.

Hate to say it, but I think the WRC car might be above his ability.

Based on a couple of drives ? Greensmith has done OK and actually set faster times than team-mates Evans and Suninen on a few stages this year.

And his drives aren't all down to money. He has come right through the series from R1 to R5 at M-Sport and if MW has confidence in him and that's good enough for me.

It´s his 3rd WRC2 start this year. Sweden went very well, Finland not.

He has driven tarmac-track cars before, Silver medal from Finnish championship and few podiums in Germany.

From Rally many overall and class wins in Finnish championship.

Talented for sure but probably not like Kalle/Oliver

I know Emil personally and he is PR wise one of best youngsters.

He's a 3rd driver and not much more. Maybe he is young enough to progress to a 2nd driver but that's his limit. He's below breen but above katsuta and can't see him improving much. There's not enough raw speed and when he pushed accidents occur normally quite heavy ones. And of course Malcolm talked highly they have been customers to Malcolm for quite a few years. depends what exactly the problem is.

What makes it more problematic is also shifting stops working (as shares same hydraulic system) so then when you need both hands on steering wheel (as no PS) you still need to use that tiny stick to change gears, and you have no cut-off, etc. So it makes it even more tricky and is making the time loss bigger.
