Didn't see any thread about it, so here we go. https://www.rally-maps.com/Rallye-Deutschland-2019

Last years awful SSS is gone, instead of that we have SS1 what will be same as shakedown.
Friday is same as last year. Saturdays Freisen and Römerstraße are same as last year. Arena Panzerplatte and Panzerplatte reversed with some tweaks. Sunday we'll have Grafschaft, almost same as last year with some small variations. Power stage will be Dhrontal which was last run in 2016 altough then it was slightly longer.

I'm heading there myself this year. Any tips to get a better spectating experience would be great as it will be my first tarmac event. Could be last rally Deutscland for a while.

I've been watching Rally for 3 or 4 years now and somehow I missed Deutschland every time. I suppose I had better make sure I get it this time...

I also had a great time in Germany two years ago.

Panzerplatte was very impressive with thousands of fans spectating, partying, drinking beers and eating hot dogs :P

Saarbrucken SSS was a disaster (this is where Meeke went off during the first seconds of the rally)...

Mittelmosel vineyards SS were very impressive as well. Close to the river and in the vineyards, I enjoyed.

A gift from his teammate and sponsor Peter Kaspers.

The Belgian champion will make an occasional comeback in the World Cup, eighteen years after his last appearance in Cyprus with the Peugeot 206 Bastos Kronos, during the next Rally of Germany, the WRC World Cup competing from August 22 to 25 not far from our borders.

"I always told Peter that I would still like to do a little rally with a WRC because it's still different from an R5," says the driver from Saint Trond. "He took me at his word. But as we did not want to steal the show from the provincials in Hannut or Waremme, Peter, who dreamed of competing in a world championship event, decided to join Deutschland with the J-Motorsport Citroën DS3 WRC, the car with which Jourdan Serderidis drove a few years ago. "
With which objective? "Oh, especially having fun and going to the end. I think the WRC2 Pro will logically be in front of us. I hope we can be in front of the other R5. A day of testing is planned. If I feel comfortable in the car, a Top 15 will be possible

This basically means that Spain will be Neuville, Loeb, Sordo... even if Mikkelsen is much better than Sordo in Germany (which is unlikely without big changes to the tarmac car) I doubt they will drop Sordo in Spain.

Question for guys who have been at Rally Deutschland before, how is the panzerplatte stages regulated? Do they only have designated spectator areas or could I pick my own spot? After all it is a military area, so dont want to get into trouble lol.

You can try access it elsewhere, but roads can be blocked or not, it can change between runs even. We have always been able to carry on walking. But remember it is a military area after all.

He did well on tarmac in Monte and thry are keen to see him on this surface again.

Putting Camilli, Breen or Paddon in the WRC car for just one event would make no difference to the team. They wouldnt win the rally and M-Sport isnt in the running for the Manus title.

You can see the time difference next to Camilli's speed.
It was closer on the 1st run with less traction off the start, i assume.

There's no doubt that the new Fiesta is struggling on gravel (both Suninen and Camilli were around 1s/km slower in Estonia and Finland) but from the first tarmac outing in Rome it seems it can be fast on tarmac - Campedelli was a bit slow at the beginning but he quickly improved to a top level pace. Camilli and Tidemand will probably do fine in Germany.

I wonder if there is some way that word could be gotten to team Pricipals/bosses/marketing people that black wheels, an unfortunate and very stupid fad carried over from only god knows where, are fugly as fawk...and makes even experience fans instantly suspect of the team..One naturally wonders "are these guys serious, or just poseur girlie men like those roadracers if they follow roadracer fashion fads?"

Who makes the decisions to do this?

There is a nice clear photo and you cannot 'see' the wheel right in front of your nose.. Logically you would think that the wheel manufacturer would like their products seen being used in high level competition, so why would they make them virtually disappear? Since it doesn't make sense, it must have come from some marketing or 'styling' person..

short preview clip of the long one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU2J83uYbzw

i hope for a really close fight like in Finland or last year here at Rally Germany between Tänak and Ogier until Ogiers puncture. One thing what i want to see is how Tänak handles the pressure if he is pushed right until the last stage. Or vice versa, when he has to push to catch up, although at the moment he would happily take 2nd or 3rd with PS points rather than pushing for the win. Anyway, like i said, hoping for a really close fight until the end between the TOP3.

Outside the TOP3 i cant really see anyone challenging them, Latvala and Sordo have good records here but their starting position is a disadvantage on friday. Shame that we dont have Elfyn.

Also the big question is have Toyota finally found a solution to their suspension/rim problem and how is Citroen bouncing back from unsuccessful Corsica.

mknight
19th August 2019, 09:31
Agree that Citroen and Ogier especially is under some pressure here. This is seemingly his best chance to catch up to Tanak (for Neuville it is Turkey). Before Corsica everyone was expecting Ogier with C3 to dominate there and in the end C3 was probably overall the slowest car. I think he should manage to fight in top 3 from start, main issue in Corsica seemed to be that they focused all setup/testing on that long stage with different surface, should not happen twice.

We could see Tanak get pushed in Corsica by Evans and consequently he took a risky cut and got puncture (same as Latvala, while Meeke had "don't cut"), so he is not a robot.

Neuville and Hyundai is another huge unknown. Though in Germany there are not that many mid-speed corners/stages where Hyundai typically has struggled, so he could still be high up even if they didn't do big improvements.

What I recommend everyone is to closely follow SD/SS1 and especially SS9/11 Romerstrasse where Hyundai struggled massively last year being last 3 WRCs without issues on both passes: (https://www.ewrc-results.com/results/44263-adac-rallye-deutschland-2018/?s=181177). Citroen on the other hand has been very good on this stage both in 2017 and 2018. Imo the characteristics of the stage (straight-90 deg-straight) make engine and mechanical grip most important.

------------------

I have to correct you on Sordo who actually has really bad recent record here crashing out both in 2018 and 2017. Both times from podium though.

Before Sardinia there was an argument here where people said how nobody else than the top3 has a chance for podium... and in the end none of them were on podium for the first time of the year. So things can happen.

Don't assume everyone else has a plan similar to yours. If you're planning to stage hop then just do it, just know if you arrive too close to stage start time you might not find a nice spot.

Having said that I've stayed, not stage-hopped, instead choosing to hold a nice spot through the rain only to end up with the stage cancelled! Or someone will just come and stand in front of you. Marshalls are also great at doing that!

Strange choice of car the DS3 WRC. Why not compete with the other R5's ?
it's a present from his codriver.
apparently a few months back after some rally they talked about how driving a wrc is completely different from an r5, and how he would like to drive one once more. So his co-pilot set this drive up as a surprise for him, completely outside their normal schedule. They wanted to drive just for fun, not for results.

It isnt SSS, so probably a normal road order. Will it be brushed? I hope so, but if it isnt...not a big deal imo. Fair conditions for all the wrc cars and more fun for the spectators.

Mikkelsen seems to be same place as last year here and same place as Loeb on Corsica. One of the last WRCs.

Which brings me to an alternative theory why Loeb is not starting. They did not manage to find or do changes that would make the car better to drive for them, so Loeb is waiting with his last start and Sordo runs as safe choice. Just like in Corsica except the other way around with Mikkelsen and Loeb.

This is something what I don't like - lottery in rally.

Yes, there are always some elements changing (like weather, road condition etc), but if "the winner is the one who luckily didn't get any punctures", then it's not competition anymore.

And I don't talk here about punctures which are caused by driver mistakes, and I know that there is hard to draw clear line between situations "just unlucky" and "driver mistake".

"It's quite simple, you have to win!" Sébastien Ogier admitted at the microphone to Olivier Gaspard, RTBF's special correspondent in Germany. The ambitions are there, the shakedown has gone relatively well, but we can see that it's really tight, it's going to be an intense fight, and with the risk of a puncture in Panzerplatte on Saturday, I hope that luck will be with us this weekend. Corsica (the last rally on asphalt, where it did not go well for Citroën, ed), and I was eager to fight on the shakedown this morning to see where we were. did not bring all the elements of answer, we seem to be in the act, and I hope that it will continue throughout the weekend.I am not satisfied with 100%, there are things that I would still like to improve, like the balance of the car, which is not yet perfect for my taste. in the right direction, and I hope it will be enough to be competitive this weekend. Cause shakedown doesn't actually "show" on the maps. So what you saw in the morning was them running from right(east) to left(west) but with an overlay of the evening stage.

Hmm, I disagree. The don't need to use shakedown as SS1 to avoid using bullshit stages. They can use whatever normal stage instead. If they want to use SD they could at least reverse it. Driving the same stage over and over again adds some risk and here in CZ we actually had a tragic accident on a stage which the crew did already fourth time including shakedown (you may remember the name of Martin Semerád, once Pireli Star Driver, whose career ended with that).

Sarrazin very slow on SS1. Possibly puncture or something...

Ogier looks really impressive through SS01. I'm not Ogier fan but his drive was brilliant, not so fast enough as Ott, but spectacular to watch

agreed. what i was surprised by is how much sweat he had after such a short stage, he is working around with that citroen

At least Camilli time with new Fiesta isn't so horrible as it was in Finland. Really great looking car, but performance from the box so low :/

Looks like now the center of the rim sits a bit deeper compared to the spokes. Anyway, the difference could be invisible (composition of the material the rims are made of).

[QUOTE=Mirek;1227009]Hmm, I disagree.

The Manx Rally used to be like this also, they repeated the stages many times and the speed just ramped up. Vatanen had a huge accident in the MCD Escort when he overstepped the limit, was lucky to get away with it. I seem to remember when interviewed he referenced the repeated stages as a contributor to the accident.

I kind of like #17 Katsuta car because it has no sponsor stickers, just TGR colours.

I think those are quite usual,

SS2 - 10:14, SS3 - 11:08 (whatever your timezone is), difference is 54min.

SS2 - 19.44km, last year winning time 13min
P1 start interval 2min, x11 cars = 20min + x4 WRC2PRO cars (but longer driving time).
Around ~40min driving related time to cover.

Few minutes before, studio analyze after and I can not see there any long cap.

SS2 Stein Und Wein today is interesting because almost half of it is run on very wide and fast roads. Partly it has a Corsica/Catalunya flow type of corners which is untypical to Deutschland, but some of these wide sections are just super fast...there's also some forest and vineyard narrower sections mixed in, but the amount of wide roads is bigger than on any other stage (except Panzerplatte, which is again different in its surface)
