Here the new 2019 edition of Rally Turkey.
Very similar roads except one new stage (17 stages + 317.88kms)

Some shuffling with stages from day to another.

Icmeler now opens the rally. It's a quite fast stage with several tarmac patches (Ogier won this one with the hand-fixed car)
Cicekli now driven only once on Sunday. It was the slowest stage last year, very twisty.
New stage Kizlan driven twice on Saturday.
The Ovacik stage is dropped from Sunday. This is where Tänak almost went off, and some JWRC driver went straight in a surprising corner after a long climb.
The 38 km Cetibeli will probably be the longest gravel stage of the season

Some changes in length to the stages here and there.

Last year my trip to WRC Rally Turkey was organized by a travel agency (group travel).
This year the travel agency won't include this rally in their plans.
Do you know of any travel agencies organizing group travel to WRC Turkey 2019?

Thank you

It's a pretty simple rally to do by your self and you have the freedom. Easy stage access for spectators, I do not believe people need tickets as it's free range when you get on a stage but of course in safe places. Happy to share some good locations/stages.

Thank you for the reply. I know many things about this rally since I was there last year spectating SSS, Ula, Datca, Cicecli, Icmeler and Marmaris PS.
I was just hoping I would not do this trip alone.

Some tips:

Tickets are not needed for most SS, except for the PS (president Erdogan was present and the safety rules were TOO strict).
SSS in Marmaris was spectated by myriads of people but the mountains had almost no fans at all.
Service park during the first days was that empty you could have a chit chat with the drivers :P
Access to most SS is relatively easy and Marmaris is a nice city with lots of European tourists.

It is now less than two months before the rally and the site is not yet updated with 2019 content...

Is it better to buy a trusted GPS device instead of using a smartphone for traveling to the stages? Last year I had big problems with smartphone's signal.

The VIP experience was 100 Euro per person last year and it was an amazing value. They certainly lost money on me and my wife as we drank tons of wine and ate all the free food. The boat ride and stage watching from the sea was also a cool experience. If they offer it again at that price I would seriously consider it. We didn't even have to drive one of the days as they had a bus shuttling everyone around.

Download Maps.Me app

Get the DMZ maps file from Planet Marcus (For each rally in fact)

Opening the DMZ files in Maps.Me and you can have each stage, route to and access roads in offline

Stage altitudes someyimes get crazy or so into forest so signals dead sometimes. Get a GPS instrad of smartphone is the best option.

Neuville-Mikkelsen-Sordo
Confirmed

The only real question there was Sordo or Breen. Sordo won Sardinia and slow gravel is atm prbly his best surface, but didn't drive there last year. Breen did well on friday last year but didn't drive much after that since the car burned.

Route preview.
- Mostly same stages as last year with some small changes here and there
- New stage Kizlan on Saturday, it's very fast, wide and smooth. Completely different to the other stages. Dare I predict 120 km/h average speeds?
- Last year's fastest stage Göcke has most of its route replaced with a narrow and technical road.
- The rough ending from the Ula stage is removed. This is where Evans and Østberg broke their cars.
- Friday has more than half of the rally length.

As the president was planned to arrive last year, a small field beside the service park was used for his 3 black hawk helicopters as landing zone, it was ashphalted the day before (!). I’m guessing that it’ll be used as media parking this year if not then it was torn apart back to normal for the community haha

so finally a rallying week...

Honestly dont know what to expect. Last year Neuville and Ogier were very strong pacewise until their problems, Toyotas really struggled on Friday but were better on next days. Like we saw last year with Ott, that you have to just mind your own pace and business on this rally and you could get a very good result.

Friday will be a crucial day with more than half of the rally distance covered.

I presume it's being wholly funded by the Turkish state, particularly given who turned up last year.

AnttiL
9th September 2019, 10:59
Last year Toyotas were really struggling with the grip. Remember how everyone expected them to fail miserably on suspension and radiator damages based on what happened in Portugal and Sardegna? Maybe they had played it safe with suspension setups compromising the performance? Also, Ogier and Neuville drove at absolute maximum and you could wonder if that was too much for their cars? Or do I remember correctly that Neuville's issue was a mistake by a mechanic? or Mikkelsen's?

In addition to Friday being the longest day, it's also the roughest, at least based on reports from last year. Obviously things could have changed for this year with roads repaired after the rally or deteriorated by weather etc. The only truly rough parts on Saturday are only parts on the Datca stage, and on Sunday only single passages on each stage.

Fast Eddie WRC
9th September 2019, 11:09
Tanak says he thinks his car's performance advantage will mean he wont have to push as hard as the others and will mean taking fewer risks.

Plus I think with his points lead, a good finish will be his target rather than going all-out for the win. Manu points will also be important to him for the team.

AnttiL
9th September 2019, 11:11
In the WRC+ preview magazine, many drivers said they didn’t know last year what to expect and will have a more cautious approach this year...or then it’s again psychological games to make others drive slower ;)

Toyota confirmed in interviews after last year that they used harder springs and other changes to suspension to avoid damage and that compromised performance.

Both Neuville's (damper popped up trough bonnet) and Mikkelsen's (front diff fail) issues last year were indeed due to mechanic(s) according to Hyundai. Nandan even mentioned people getting fired for that before GB.

Maybe, maybe not so much.
You would think that an item that aids aerodynamics more like a windscreen would make more difference, but both Meeke and Latvala have proved in the past not so much!

AnttiL
11th September 2019, 07:11
I'm not an expert in aerodynamics, but I would guess the windscreen affects more the top speed and acceleration, whereas the rear wing affects cornering speed, and I think the latter is more important in rallying.

Possibly, but wing surely has to be more of an effect in high speed cornering rather than low speed, where lack of screen will also be a factor.
It would be like running with a plastic bag held behind you, you can see the effect wind has on the carrier bag causing drag, would be the same as a car with no windscreen.

Written like that the explanation does sound counter-intuitive. Preparing for rough rally by making suspension lighter..... then again those changes are meant for increasing grip.

Sounds like the engineers were maybe a tiny little bit sceptical but all 3 drivers unanimously chose these improvements to be implemented for increased performance. Must have been reliable on the test as well (plus in Sardinia with Juho), but whether that holds true in the rally will remain to be seen.

Well, no...drivers are drivers, not entertainers and PR persons. Dumb questions deserve dumb/straight answers. Be it Tänak, Neuville "i would have won, if...", moody Ogier, or some local quy in his local championship. They can do it, they have the right to do it and it spices things up.

So this really sounds like a problem of modern era snowflakes...

With road position advantage etc, does anyone genuinely think we could get one of Mikkelsen, Latvala, Suninen or Lappi winning this?

I have Ogier favourite and it's always hard to look past the top 3, but I stuck a cheeky fiver on Mikkelsen as his odds were pretty decent at 11/1. If the first loop stays dry and it cleans a lot, I'd like to see at least one of those 4 make a push and challenge for victory. Sordo has great road position and car as well, but with him not being here last year I doubt he can fight for victory. Should be yet another interesting rally nonetheless.

There was this guy called Bolt, who would run for less than 10 seconds and then spend an hour doing interviews with same questions.

Sure drivers (or any sportsmen for that matter) can pick, but it will affect their popularity among people and among sponsors.

Last year it didn't look like road position had so much to say, later drivers had some pretty rough stages. So it's not so easy call as Sardinia. A lot will depend on choosing the "right" speed on friday stages, can't see any clear winning candidates tbh any of those 4 + top 3 could end up on top. Tanak maybe the most likely to play it a bit safe.

I wish some interviewer could ask something more specific. For example Toyota had to redesign their rear wing for this event. Someone should ask the drivers about their feedback for this design.

Right now we have all the time same questions over and over again. I am not standing up for Tänak right now, but this is just starting to be boring for a me as a rally fan.

I find it very interesting how little (close to nothing) there has been about this on official channels, wrc+ and also on autosport. Basically nothing. (Compare the attention that for example Hyundai's small aero change for Finland got).

It totally looks like FIA/Promoter tries to cover the big problem that rules were not the same for everyone for 2,5 years.

That Emyr guy is a nice dude and knows a bit about rallying, but his stage end interviews are often pretty awkard. I feel like Colin and Julian are naturals and get more out of the drivers.

Exactly. If Tanak is nervous, irritated, disappointed, annoyed or even pissed, why should he pretend he isn't? It's not North Korea, where everybody has to be happy, is it? ;)

And Your point is? You can name examples, who do like others like, also hundreds of examples from every area, who are good at what they do, but sometimes or even often rude, racist, and otherwise D-heads but still...popular, wealthy and successful...and don`t care...

Ott is turning into a bit of a moody princess thesedays with his persona and stage end comments. Not like he'll care about that, or what others think if he lands a title though...

What did he say, I didn't had a chance to see it?

Nothing imo...he was told that he doesn`t have to win this event, having a comfy lead and he said: "(Why don`t i have to win it?) We will see tomorrow. If you have four events to go, you never know. We have to take what we can from every event."

It takes mental strength to remain positive and grateful after you become a top driver who's earning millions. Most people don't have that. The ones who do will have the biggest number of fans. That doesn't mean you have to shut down your personality, it can be shown in a nice way. Take Grönholm for example. I think it was clear a long time ago that Tänak is not one of them.

Cmon girls:). Do not start over thinking. Tanak was most quiet driver years back, answering only "yes" and "no". He is giving his best to "talk" and has changed his personality very much. Even Becks has said that Tanak was hardest guy to take interviews because he did not talk nothing and it changed one day. You need to see Tanaks movie then you understand his personality better.

M. Ok then. Though i think PSA and its fans would have disagreed.

And the other thing was actually " lucky bastard", you can look up the synonyms yourself (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/lucky_bastard). Not so bad and if you add the fact that he is not a native speaker (+ he was really lucky indeed:D).

But well hey, that is the emotions part, why some people love it, others hate it. There is no right way, as people are different, each have enemies and friends, some more, some less.

What did he say, I didn't had a chance to see it?Honestly nothing much. Just came across difficult, or a bit glum/moody. It was more just an observation of a general trend I and others have spotted with Tanak. Not meant as a criticism either, there's more at stake for him now and he's maybe ultra zoned in while focusing for the title (as well as having to deal with all the contract talk). Plus he'll be doing a lot more PR in the lead up to rallies and while on events, so no doubt it gets tiring.

I previously hadn't noticed much myself, except thinking he had a problem with Molly (and her questions). But some of my mates who are more casual followers of rallying and dont watch every rally and every interview, have raised points like "what's happened to Tanak?", or think he's developed an attitude when they see/ hear him now.

And since it's been pointed out to me, I maybe notice it more when he's seemingly being short/ blunt/ condescending with his replies. Also could just be the way he says things in a foreign tongue, as there's a fine line in English where saying the same thing can come across witty and jokey, or make you look like a bit of a twat or like you have a problem with the world.

Oops!

Seen a great interview with one of Gronhlom's engineers a few years ago, F X a french fella.i He said Marcus never complained about set up like most drivers when the times weren't good, he'd just say "Ok I must drive harder".
