Citroën Total WRT praises Shell Helix Rally Estonia as a good preparation for Rally Finland
Shell Helix Rally Estonia rallypasses on sale
Citroën Total WRT crew Esapekka Lappi and Janne Ferm will start in Shell Helix Rally Estonia which is for the first time official WRC promotional event. Rally Estonia is held on 12-14 of July in South Estonia. Lappi and Ferm with Citroen C3 WRC is the first WRC crew from WRC manufacturer team in this year’s entry list. As the conditions are similar to Rally Finland the Finns are definitely fast and one’s to watch for overall victory. Lappi and Ferm have competed in Rally Estonia 2014 with S2000 car. They ended fifth overall.

Starting from this year are they driving for Citroën Total WRT and are currently 8th in WRC drivers standings. Their best result this year is second place from Rally Sweden.

Esapekka Lappi: “Rally Finland is obviously very important to me. I am happy to be able to take advantage of this additional chance to drive, in order to approach the leg as prepared as possible, and because the Estonian stages have so many similarities to those in the Jyväskylä region and the local fans show us such an enthusiastic welcome.”

Pierre Budar, Citroën Racing Team Principal: “We had an especially warm welcome while we were here last year, and the very real conditions of this testing round helped a great deal as it contributed greatly to the second place we then secured in Finland. It is now with this same objective that we return with Esapekka in order to prepare him for the WRC round on his home soil as much as possible and to gain data that will be beneficial to Sebastien.”

The fact that Esapekka Lappi and Janne Ferm and Citroën Total WRT are starting in Shell Helix Rally Estonia is important for Citroën importer in Baltic states, Veho Eesti AS.

Mihkel Vaks, member of the board Veho Eesti AS: “Once again we’re glad to welcome official Citroën Total WRT team competing in Estonia. In cooperation with rally organizers and other importers we contribute all together that Estonia will be favored destination to held official WRC promotional event. Continuous enthusiasm from WRC manufacturer teams is a sign that in the future can Estonia host official WRC round.”

Director of Shell Helix Rally Estonia Urmo Aava adds that they have longer and productive cooperation with Citroën.

“The fact that we have Citroën team third time in Estonia is a sign of trust and the feedback has been constructive. Esapekka Lappi and Janne Ferm are very popular among Estonian rallyfans and we hope to see many supporters from Finland too. Like the constructive cooperation with Citroën Total WRT the cooperation with Citroën importer in Baltics, Veho Eesti AS has been and I hope will be in future same,” said Urmo Aava, director of Shell Helix Rally Estonia.

Rallypasses are now available on Shell Helix Rally Estonia official website Price 24 euros.

Shell Helix Rally Estonia 2019 is held on 12.-14. July 2019 in Tartu, Otepää, Elva, Kanepi and Kambja. It is a round of Estonian, Latvian and FIA European Rally Cup and Official WRC promotional event.

Andrea Adamo, Team Director of Hyundai Motorsport:“We are happy to join Rally Estonia again this year because it is always great to participate in such events, which are well organized and witnessed by so many passionate spectators. This will be a good opportunity for us to prepare for Rally Finland a month later and put us into the right rhythm. The level of the event this year will be even more interesting as there will be quite a few WRC competitors there.”

Andreas Mikkelsen: “I’m really looking forward to compete at Rally Estonia in July. Rally Finland is such a special rally, being so fast and the roads are so wide, that going to Rally Estonia will be great to get into the rhythm on very similar conditions. It might be a bit more sandy in some places but still I am sure it will really help our Finland venture. I have done a rally in Estonia back in 2006 and have not been there in a really long time and I really look forward to it. From what we have seen from Estonian fans around the world, I’m sure their passion will welcome us all.”

Previous winner Ralfs Sirmacis back at Shell Helix Rally Estonia
Rally Estonia is favorite rally for Sirmacis
Sirmacis just won his class in Rally Liepaja
Shell Helix Rally Estonia is round of Latvian championship
Ralfs Sirmacis, winner of Rally Estonia 2016 and one of the fastest Latvian rally drivers is coming back to Estonia. He and Ralfs Igavenš will start at Shell Helix Rally Estonia held on 12-14 of July. Fresh winners of ERC 2 category at FIA ERC Rally Liepaja will drive this time Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X prepared by Latvian team ASRT. The participation of Ralfs Sirmacis and Ralfs Igavenš at Official WRC Promotional event is in cooperation with Pirelli and Sportland.

Three times FIA ERC European Rally Championship rally winner Sirmacis finished 3rdoverall in the series in 2016. Last weekend Sirmacis and Igavenš started their home FIA ERC event in Liepaja where they won ERC 2 category. Their next rally will be Shell Helix Rally Estonia.

Ralfs Sirmacis: “Shell Helix Rally Estonia is still my favorite rally. It is fast, with jumps and corners which makes it very enjoyable. Of course I wanted to drive it once again with R5 car but I’m sure it will fun with Mitsubishi Lancer EVO too. In Rally Liepaja we saw that we have the pace and we will give our maximum at Rally Estonia.”

I'm sure Estonian fans would want to know sooner than later so they can plan to see their hometown hero.I can't understand why he wouldn't be there. Yes Meeke is the newest driver and maybe could do with the extra competitive mileage in the Yaris, but Toyota are lucky they can test all summer if they want to in Finland due to their base. So let Meeke, Jari and maybe Juho do as much driving as possible in Finland (along with Ott), but don't deprive the Estonians from seeing Ott on home soil by sending Meeke etc there instead.

Testing in Finland is probably better preparation anyway (besides it being non competitive)?. More representative roads obviously

AFAIK all the WRC teams have agreed to come to Rally Estonia at-least with one WRC car and driver so Toyota team must have a cost line for that already. Now the question is what are their plans and budget. Mr. Toyoda has said that Tänak must become world champ by any means so i assume that money if needed should not be a problem. Of course Toyotas issues are not solved by just throwing money at the problem, but if Tommi needs extra budget for Rally Estonia i think in the light of recent events its easy. Motivation for Toyota is to gain max edge for their "home" event in Finland and really stress test the car so in Finland they can confidently go flat out and try to reduce the gap with Hyundai.

Kris Meeke is probably most motivated to drive in Estonia, he has less experience with the Yaris and being away for a year made him more hungry. I think he is more than happy to get more kilometeres under his belt with that Toyota. How this year continues for him decides probably his future.

JML needs to increase his confidence, why not do that in a rally that is similar to Finland and there's not such pressure as official wrc event. If he could do a successful "test event" before Finland it would be a good boost for him. It's the head that needs also some fixing. He doesn't need to practice for his home event but having a good mind state for Finland would be superb.

Tänak is currently in such form that he doesn't need Rally Estonia preparation opportunity but he may be motivated still. He is hungry for that title and having the unfortunate last stage is Sardinia may be the catalyst for him to really try to test (break) the Yaris by going flat out in Estonia. Also it's first rally event in Estonia that's closest to WRC and would be great place to give something back to community and fans who are following him around the world.

Let me try to explain little bit better maybe:
1) TGR is attending to Rally Estonia with atleast 1 Yaris WRC (more is also possible)
but
2)Their drivers wants to attend AutoGlym because they think that those road suite better for NRF (Neste Rally Finland, not NORF)

Money is not problem or logistics, they can run 2 rallies same time.

Tänak can choose himself which event he will do, Estonia is his home but if he think that AutoGlym is more useful...

(I do remember that last year Rally Estonia competitors got excellent results from NRF, much better than AutoGlym competitors)

Interesting theory and surely they will discuss their experiences. But i am not sure how much actual advantege it gives to Ott. While Märtin is good and experienced driver, modern WRC cars are quite different from the ones which he drove years ago. For him it would be challenge to learn all adjustment options, find best settings for his driving style etc - it probably will take more than one test and one rally to learn enough about the car to be competitive and even more to give meaningful feedback for other drivers.

that ,,testing for Ott'' is pretty stupid thought.. Ott could change the Fiestas engine ja gearbox blindfolded if needed. Märtin has very good connections with M-Sport and Wilson and as Märtin is running his own team(renting Fiesta R5s and servicing them), it's the only logical way to drive the Fiesta WRC. Umh, wild fantasies. They are basically the same cars, just finetuned. A driver, not familiar with current rallies doing a one-off local event doesn`t have anything wise to say to a guy, who drove it in 2017 and won with it. Or you seriously believe they know how to tell 0.02323 (example) differences Fiesta17 vs Fiesta 19 Vs fiesta20 vs Yaris19vs Yaris20? Same can be done by monitoring Suninen/evans on different rallies.

Plus....i think there would be no problem to arrange a "meeting" in Dovenby which involves some driving...or upgrade the 17spec they have. In the end, everything can be expected when the season starts.

Entry list: https://rallyestonia.com/en/competitors/entries/

Last year results: https://www.ewrc-results.com/final/44940-shell-helix-rally-estonia-2018/

# WRC
* Ott Tänak is clear favourite, but the same clear is that Lappi, Mikkelsen, Evans and Breen will not make winning easy
* "Pressure" from Breen - it would hit someones ego, when they going to be slower than Breen first time in Hyundai
* "Pressure" from Märtin - if Märtin can be faster than any current WRC driver, they should really consultate with mirror
How fast is Märtin? Noone knows, including Märtin himself.

For the WRC drivers it's imo all about testing for everyone except maybe Tänak.
Others will definitely change to different (risky) setups for testing and even get time penalties if needed for extra setup work rather than fight for result.

Suninen in new Fiesta, vs Solberg in Polo, Pietarinen in new Fabia and Gryazin in old Fabia should be a very interesting battle in R5 indeed.

With his experience Suninen should take it but those other cars with those drivers on these roads should be very strong indeed!

I'd like to see them confirm if it's full 'All Live' coverage, as it'll be disappointing if it ends up being a half arsed attempt. I'm still tempted to go to Estonia for this, but if there's full All Live coverage, I think I'd rather follow it from home.

If the schedule is like it was last year (and it probably is) then they have plenty of time for testing different setups.

Tanak and Toyota don't need more testing on Finnish roads since they test there all the time with "unlimited" test days and since it's his local rally he will go for win.

All the other teams have very limited testing on similar roads. They have to use test days for that and historically have been reluctant to do that "only" for one event. So they go to Estonia mainly for testing which the event (schedule) is specially made for. Hence they will not care about fight for positions. Though for sure they will try to use others as a reference for evaluating setup changes.

I imagine WRC+ will be asked to do a proper job as the Rally organisers will want to show off the event. I hope so, anyway.

They can also sort their locations for when its part of the WRC.

Now on SD Hyundai was running new aero/parts on Mikkelsen's car and old aero on Breen's.

Might be just because they didn't have enough new parts yet, or deliberate to compare the differences.

This will likely introduce some issues for Breen though and he also tested the car with new aero last week.

- if he starts with new parts in Finland his setup/feeling with the car from here will not be that much help
- if he start with old aero in Finland his car might be slower than his teammates

Pointless poll tbh. Only Tanak is actually there mostly for the win and I have little doubt he will win easily.

Other 4 for testing/setup work, some even have new parts they didn't even use in testing. Breen also for getting to know the car.

Only Tanak and Breen drove this rally last year.

For sure he ain't paying. Just a guess: the car Mikkelsen's driving is the same Hyundai used for Finland PET. Thus the non-livery. And Breen's probably driving the car he'll use in Finland.

If Mikkelsen's car is coming straight from the PET? By default the factory-entered i30 WRC would be in full livery ofcourse.

FIN is not for weeks....

It doesn't "need" to be white. But it's the same car as used by all 3 drives in the test last weekend with multiple new front aero parts (which Breen's car doesn't have).

Could be as simple as them not having the plastic wraps (design) for them ready yet. He is certainly not paying anything.

Mikkelsen drove a test car, but Breen use really old chassis which not compete since 2017. I really hope that Breen get new car for Finland. And this #4 chassis just for getting in used to the car, and if things go wrong - it's not big deal to scrape that chassis

As I wrote this is bad for Breen in either case.
If he drives old spec car in Finland he will probably be a bit slower (though with "upgrades" you never know, Ogier's Finland last year is perfect example).
If he drives new spec it will be a different car than the one he got used to here.

If Solberg is with national Pirellis he will be hard to beat in estonia. Everybody drives with Pirelli there since its quite a lot faster tyre.

At these times, when you aren`t competitive from the first outing, you are nothing, especially with a PRO behind the wheel. Look at VW`s first outing, they have several big issues, yes, but they have been winning.

That said, it`s still early stages, lets see tomorrow.

Apart from the obvious testing unknowns I think we see a repeat of what has been normal on most gravel rallies this year.

In first pass with smooth road Toyota's are much faster, followed by Fiestas, then on second pass with more rutted road (and more mechanical grip) it's much closer. Lappi even mentioned this already.
