View Full Version : Error while logging in. Failed login quota. Why does it happen?

I've had many problems with logging in the forum in the recent months. Although I type in my user and password correctly, very often the following error is displayed:

"vBulletin Message

Wrong username or password. You have used up your failed login quota! Please wait 15 minutes before trying again. Don't forget that the password is case sensitive. Forgotten your password? Click here!"

I try again after 15 minutes with the same result. Then I have to wait another 15 minutes and, if I'm lucky, after a few attempts I can finally log in in the forum. It is extremely annoying. Does anybody else have the same problem? What is the reason? Can it be repaired?

I have had the same experience during the last few months as well. Don't know why - and as you I have not discovered any other 'solution' than just trying again and hoping to be lucky. However, I don't have the patience to wait for 15 minutes - I have been able to log in succesfully imediately after being rejected by a 'failed login quota'.

Thanks for your reply mate! At least I know now, that I don't have to wait 15 minutes for another login! :)

You're welcome. But it is still very annoying, because sometimes I have to try many times before success. However - today the login worked at first attempt, so perhaps the problem is fixed now. Fingers crossed :-)

Today it worked at first attempt for me as well, but I'm not sure that it is fixed. Maybe I was lucky?
Using private messages I found more people that have / had the same problem, but they don't know any solution. Well, at least we know that we are not alone ;)

No, I am also still having the problem - got through in 2 attempts today, though, to today is a good day :-)

I get this constantly and it seems only password reset helps, and not even that always. It's very frustrating.

This has just started happening to me too.

It's PITA and my PC is playing up generally since a Windows Update... :(

My solution: I created 2 login versions

cwj and CWJ

- now one is always working, most of the time small letters, it takes me max 2 attempts :)

This problem has been annoying me for a year now. Some days I have been able to log in at first attempt, but more often than not 2, 3 or even more attempts was required. Some days I even have given up completely.

But a week ago I noticed something. I always use the same link to access the forum - and have done so for years - and I noticed that the link was not a secure connection (http://... at the start of the link). I have changed my link to https://www.motorsportforums.com/forum.php and since, I have been able to log on without problems. This has now worked for a week, so I am beginning to hope, that I have hit a solution.

I don't know, if it will continue working, but I just thought, I would share it with you, so that you also could check, if it could be a help for you.

Thanks for sharing this tip. How do you login to the forum? Do you use the small user/password text boxes in the upper right corner? Or do you login using 'Reply' button?

Hi Jarek. I always log in by using the user/password text in the upper right corner. But I also have to tell, that using the https-solution has not made the login-problem disappear completely. I am still rejected sometimes - however, it is slightly better than before.

It happens to me on the (very rare) occasions that I try to log in. Usually I just lurk & read the posts of interest. I have found that sometimes when the login fails I can hit the page refresh button causing my browser (Firefox) to re-send the login data & that gets me in. It's how I got in to post this.

These damn spammers don't seem to have any problem logging in, do they?

Where's Mark?

Where's Pino?

Is there anybody out there???

Today, after over 20 attempts, out of frustration, I made some research and found possible reasons for this neverending login problem.

I think the problem concerns configuration of the forum. It seems to be connected with:
1. a special Strikes table (which is used to keep track of failed logins)
2. bad configuration of forum code in which all the IPs on the host site are showing as the same IP

Of course we, normal users, can do nothing about it. It's a job for the forum admin. But since noone seems to care about the forum, I have no big hopes that it will ever be corrected.

Some useful links from my research:

Link nr 1 (with the description of Strikes table):

Link nr 2 (suggestion to turn off router, but I don't think that it works):

Link nr 3 (description of how all the IPs are showing as the same IP):

Link nr 4 (solution to be made by forum admin):

It was indeed related to the strikes system when connected with using the SSL proxy on OVH.

Sorry mate, you'll have to wait. First we need to make a statue for the administrators ;)
