According to ewrc Lindholm's Polo suffered another suspension failure after jump (likely similar to Veiby in Portugal or Sardinia - I don't remember where it was):

Whatta day!!
We started from Päijälä1 "Veibys place" and Markkanen rolled heavily. Then moved 500m towards start and watched vetomies and got one rolled(Teppo)
Then to Pihlajakoski2 and almost saw Pajari rolled.
Then to Leustu2 and we saw Loubet way too much entering to corner (almost 50kmh too much speed) and it took over 6minutes to get him back to road.
Very much auction but also wrc guys speed is amazing!

He used hand brake and took high speed off backwards. Only rear hatch was broken but when we got car off from tree stumb he accelerated back to road and broke front bumper. Nothing serious I think so. He and co-driver were out of car and we told him that we try to get him back and we did it!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190803/2ecc3ba4b7b2aec2d2269aee82bced47.jpg

Saturday highlights are up, interesting things:
- Lappi cutting trough the bushes, think that's SS12
- Breen moment on SS13 onboard, same as the one shown from the outside on michelin vid
- Latvala moment on SS12 almost jumping off the road

- Neuvilles Novikov moment from the outside
- Mikkelsen evading a rock in the line in quite high speed on SS16

- Katsuta ripping off his wheel like 10 meters from the startline in first corner

What was missing was how Neuville damaged his suspension.

Really like the idea of having guests in the all live studio between the stages. Yesterday they had Malcolm Wilson talking about his 40 years in the Motorsport and also Peter Solberg and Oliver. Today Marcus Gronholm and Mads Ostberg were there and what a legend is Marcus. Really interesting stories especially from his days in Peugeot and the 307 experience.

They not have so detailed notes in WRC. I will be wounder if someone in WRC have it. Problem was that Latvala and Meeke push so much and go over a limit many times. And in one of this occasions - rock laying on his racing line. It happens when you push. As we see same corner, same rock - different result for JML and Meeke

mknight
4th August 2019, 05:48
The rock was in the ditch. For example on Latvala's case he clearly did a mistanke in the corner before and had to correct which put him wide in the ditch. Meeke just seemed too fast.

Anything you remember he said about the 307 which was particularly interesting? :)When he said "I'm fed up with this car", he knows that this is bad for marketing but despite this he said it. After that he has to go to Paris for a lecture from the big bosses to not talk like that about the car and he said OK. It was interesting when he explains it in his own way.

20" penalty for Breen, late at TC.

Neuville moves ahead.

Reason they did this now is to get him to start the PS ahead of Neuville. With Greensmith and Meeke out he'd be 2nd WRC on the road otherwise.

Don't think it matters much tbh, but last year Suninen took a penalty so that Ogier doesn't start 5th but 6th instead...

Is it only me or are those studio sequences in wrc+ sometimes cut mid-sentence, when timeslot is over? Now wrap up too. Dont they know their own timeslots? And how difficult would it be to just stretch them, its not like they have to accommodate other programs like on regular tv? Or is it only issue when looking afterwards like i did just now and in real-time it is shown until they run out things to talk about?

When live, they usually wrap up. I think this might be because sometimes studio starts earlier, so it gets recorded in to the end of the stage. When the time ticks to the planned SS end, the recording ends and a new one starts. You then have to click STUDIO below the video to have it continue. Can be quite annoying.

Drivers' championship after Finland 2018 vs Finland 2019. Have to keep in mind that this year there was also Chile in calendar.
1812
1813

Driver/Points/Position (+ means improvement)
Neuville: +2/-2
Ogier: +26/0
Tänak: +73/+2
Lappi : -12/-4
Sordo: -8/-5
Mikkelsen +14/+1
Latvala: +1/-2
Evans: +26/+4
Ostberg: -/-
Meeke: +17/+3
...
Suninen: +34/+7

Judge by yourself who have been the winners and losers of the current season.

PS: If we assume that the final 5 rallies will play out exactly as last year, then by the end of the season results will be as following:
Tänak 254 pts
Ogier 245 pts
Neuville 203 pts

"It's not a positive weekend because we lose 18 points on Tanak, we hope of course that the next events will be different, but I'm not worried about the performance, the trend has been pretty clear for a few time What more can I do? Maybe I'm getting older I'm not the type to say that it's not my fault when I do not win The Ogier-Citroën package is not up to date In five races, it's hard to turn the tide, I'm not bitter, I'm glad the weekend is over and we're going home, let's wait for Germany. I'm always optimistic about my chances of a title, "explained Ogier at our microphone.

"We know that the weekend was difficult, but I do not think we took a shot at morale. We started with a bad special, but we quickly found the pace.We had to make a lot of adjustments during the test, we feel that our tests were not very good, after that we were very present, unfortunately we lost a little bit of time because of the sweeping, we optimized our position on the road, we We did what we could, in the end, the gap with Ogier did not move. There was just Tanak who made a great rally. It must be said, he had by far the best car this weekend. 1st, 2nd and 3rd Friday Even if we call God, we can not resist, we can be happy with the 12 points this weekend, "Neuville detailed at our microphone after the event.

"We gave everything here, we always give everything we have, but sometimes we can not excel, I keep my spirits up, there are good rallies to come and others where the sweep will be more annoying for the first car on the road. The Toyota is not the most reliable, we count on it too, "added the Belgian.

Mad jump by Ogier... but no corner to follow.

There is no corner after the real yellow house jump. It’s the infamous fast section where Gronholm kept the throttle down for 46 seconds. Also thanks to this super fast section ( and another one) the long Ouninpohja is not driven anymore.

What proof do you need that is the driver? He would be in contention for title if he would be considered like Ogier in M-Sport in FIESTA! They should have asked Tommi what he thought about Meeke crashing out the second time on a stage where he just needed to drive trough to get to the PS where he could take points off Ogier/Neuville.

Cause as he says the first crash can happen, but it's the second crash that might get Meeke kicked, just like the "second mistake" on PS in Portugal after already loosing 2nd place with the spin. Similarly what got him kicked from Citroen was crashing out when minutes behind due to punctures and not in a fight with anybody.

I am a Tänak fan and also believe the car is not driving itself. Just many people have the opinion like the car is from another planet and anyone in the Yaris could be this quick.

While driving in M-sport together with Ogier, then also the cars were different. For example Ogiers car recieved new updates, while Tänak had to drive without them, because the budget didn't allow to imply them to both cars.

mknight
5th August 2019, 15:26
Sure the car is not driving itself, but first passes in Finland were Toyota 1-2-3 both Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday morning you had Toyota 1-2-3 within 1s, then Lappi 6s behind and then the rest. Tänaks teammates couldn't keep that pace without issues though.

Off course it's not only the car and Tänak would likely be able to fight for wins also in others cars, like he has done in Fiesta, but it would have been much closer.

Far from completely artificial. The terrain had a natural crest, all the did was modify it to resemble more the Ouninpohja yellow house crest and build a road over it. If you want something completely artificial, look at the Great Orme or Guanajuato ramp jumps.

The distance achieved by Neuville & Ogier reminded me of when ski-jumpers 'out-jump the hill'.

And the fact they went further than the distance markers shows the organisers didnt expect that and therefore hadnt fully considered what could happen.

That long flat runway allowed the cars to achieve a higher speed than they do on a normal jump within a stage.

Ogier's extreme nose-up landing isnt normally seen on WRC jumps. The aero is usually quite balaced. But at extreme speed who knew what it might cause...

like Tommeke said: "Hard to find the words to describe how amazing this event was"

same here, another awesome year at Rally Finland. Really satisfied with my homework done before the rally this year, the places on the stages were good and all the things were running smoothly. Only complain: it was so DAMN cold the last two nights. Especially Saturday night at Päijälä, i was shaking like a leaf in the tent the whole night until morning.

We started with the shakedown on Thursday, at this place https://youtu.be/ibFUATF4kb0?t=88. I have to tell the place is 100X times awesome in real life, the speed was insane. We drove it through the night before with like 50km/h but i guess these guys have something like 160km/h at there?
Suninen was most spectacular there, very sideways and throwing the most amount of rocks at us.

Friday we were on Moksi and Urria. On Moksi we were at a very fast flat-out left hander, Ogier had a veeeeery sideways moment there, my heart stopped for a second. The others came through nicely.

On Urria we were at the fast corner before the big jump, it can be seen here from last years vid https://youtu.be/vLb2zPDY0hA?t=36. But before this fast corner theres also a crest and this is where Lappi had that moment. The crest lifted the cars and they came flat out there, Lappi was soooo sideways over that crest and flew basically into the ditch with the rear, until this day i cant understand how he came away from it.

On Saturday we were at Päijälä and Pihlajakoski. On Päijälä at 5km rollercoaster road and on Pihlajakoski at very end of the stage, fast left and right.
Ogier hit a three/ditch very hard coming too fast into the left hand corner and Tänak took the right hand corner completely with different line compared to others. Lappi was very wild there and he also won that stage.

aaanddd on Sunday of course the big jump at the end of Ruuhimäki and i guess i dont have to tell you about it.

At least the stages and places we were, Tänak was by faaaaaar the most smoothest and cleanest, like just having a Sunday cruise, even on Friday on first passes. The others were correcting the car all the time, the most wild ones were Lappi and Suninen, especially Suninen on every place we were.

i dont know if i will go next year, the problem is that everything costs so much. I mean, the rally pass this year was 80 euros, 80 EUROS? And then we have to pay 15-20 euros for parking every night, and then some parkin places dont even have a toilet or thrash bags for this money.

I was at Rally Spain two years ago and there was no rally pass and parking fees. And if you put all the Rally Finland costs together, it isnt a massive difference between it and Rally Spain.

But in the end im sure ill go anyway, lol.

and you can see from this pic we were at Rally Finland, a huge jump ;)

Ruuhimäki itself also contains fast jumps. The real Yellow house jump also has a long acceleration.

The problem I have with the Ruuhimäki ending is the extremely artificial feel of the area after the jump. It just looks like a big flat empty (parking) lot.

Finland has great natural stages including the "roller coaster" on the wide road just before the last part of Ruuhimäki and then to "top it up" they go for a "cheap" flick in a seemingly empty artificial area.

At least some grass/banks/trees would help a lot on how that last sections feels, even if people know it's artificial.

WRCWings notes on Ruuhimäki (power stage) last jump:

Some of the cars showed an excessive nose-up behavior while landing in the last crest of the Power Stage (Ruuhimäki), with the Citroën C3 WRC of Ogier and Ingrassia reaching the top angle, and losing the rear diffuser in the second pass as a minor consequence. The reason why those cars nose-up so heavily is not only related to aerodynamics, but to the way they faced the crest.

As Mads Østberg explained to us in an interview included in our post on Aerodynamics of a WRC car jump, it is normal to brake a little bit before the crest, in order to balance the car. If the top of the crest is reached at full acceleration, the car will face it with the nose up.

The control time at the end of the Ruuhimäki stage was located on top of the crest. Many drivers were pushing down to the limit to the very end of the stage to get the best time and some points. For this reason, they probably did not brake before the crest, and their cars took off nosing up. If you add a poor aero balance (such is the case of the C3), then the landing could not be balanced, and the cars reached very unbalanced position (as it happened to Ogier or Neuville).

it cant be that crap if second year in a row its fighting for the win on the first day and in the end is second. Lappi was also second in Sweden, so the Citroen must be quite good on fast stuff.

what i also noticed again is that the guys who were at Rally Estonia this year, did really well also on Rally Finland, exactly like last year.

For me Breen definitely secured a contract with some team for next year, really great performance from him. Mikkelsen did also really well considering its one of his weakest rallies.

That's what it is. It's one way to give more space for spectators and to accomodate the podium ceremony.

Spectators/podium don't need to be on a flat and empty area. "Natural" earth-tribunes even artificially made with grass looks 10x better than flat empty tarmac patch.

I am not so sure. Remember Breen has 2 podiums... from Sweden and Finland. So it's one of his 2 best rallies. He has yet to prove he can be fast and stay fast on med-slow gravel, not to mention tarmac rally without mistakes. (Btw. Østberg did basically the same in Finland last year and it's not like he has a drive now)

Anyway Breen very likely secured a drive with I20 in GB instead of Sordo.

I was at the podium place at ruuhimaki. And heared Seb chatting with Yari-mattis wife. She asked how was he and his rally and he answered that the were better times and better rallys. Added later that WW times are gone and it is what it is. He looked very upset and tired. I never saw him like that before. Like he was devastated by the fact that he can't keep up with those 3 guys upfront.

Heh i remember last year he lost peace of aero on the back of his Fiesta exactly at that last jump. But the jump and landing was more clear.

It's not just the Rally Finland finish area, it's used for other things throughout the year, you cannot spice it up with trees and grass just for the sake of this event.

He came 7th (really 6th before giving the place to Neuville) out of 8 WRC finishers.

But he did do the job expected of him, i.e finish without incident.

I think he has put himself solidly in place on the list of drivers who will be considered next year, by any team that wants a reliable finisher.

Do not look the difference behind Ott; if Ott would push like others did, he would at least 90 sec ahaed...100% sure. Ott was on a sunday drive, read the comment from EstWRC who was spectating....

exactly, he is a perfect number two in the team

i mean, it was his FIRST WRC rally in 9 months being with FIRST time with a Hyundai what is known not to be a good car on Rally Finland and he did absolutely brilliantly, faster than Neuville who has been forever in the team.

There was a pretty good head wind at the powerstage jump, maybe that created up lift when they came off the jump like it does on a ski jump?

Don't think it would had been 90+ seconds, unless others had issues. Already based on the power stage, he was only 0,7 faster than Neuville who was not the biggest threat during the rally. The only question would had been, who would had survived the maximum attack approach on the long run.

exactly, he is a perfect number two in the team

Nobody is going to hire him as "perfect number two" based on one rally.

.. faster than Neuville who has been forever in the team.

Actually in this case being longer in the team likely wasn't really an advantage. With the upgrades the I20 turns quite different than before and Neuville had one day test mostly in rain, so suddenly the car was different than it has been for a long time.

The C3 has looked scary in the air for a few years. Does the rear wing have some passive aero that depends on speed? The car takes off flat but as it goes through the air (and slows down with drag) something tips it up as if a pilot was pulling back on the controls after a while. At similar speeds on smaller jumps it seems fine.

It was very cold during the rally. The coldest rally Finland since I’ve been there from 2001.

I just published my rally Finland 2019 photo gallery:

There are photos about 7 special stages and the podium ceremony.

There's also an aero issue still to be resolved with the C3 R5 . This lead to Østberg not entering Rally Finland.

To be honest I find this his reasoning a bit cheap. By raw speed he was the fastest WRC2 driver nearly everywhere and it was only his mistakes what prevented him from winning the events. He would be fast in Finland too, maybe not as fast as Rovanperä but for sure fast enough to fight for the podium.

Also pretty wise tactics not to drive against Rovanperä in Finland. Rovanperä has now driven seven events, Østberg only five. Østberg can get easier wins later in the season (with Kalle not starting).

EDIT: I was wrong, drivers can drive all events they want, eight best count, so it's likely that Kalle will do most of the remaining rallies.

I don't think so. Just because it looks like a sunday drive doesn't mean he's not close to the maximum speed possible.
In contrary, wilder and more spectacular driving is usually slower and pushing beyond whats comfortable creates errors.

We started with the shakedown on Thursday, at this place youtu.be/ibFUATF4kb0?t=88. I have to tell the place is 100X times awesome in real life, the speed was insane. We drove it through the night before with like 50km/h but i guess these guys have something like 160km/h at there?
Suninen was most spectacular there, very sideways and throwing the most amount of rocks at us.

Yeah that is a nice spot. I finished the session there this year, having worked my way up the 'straight' prior to this, but stood on the inside as I didn't fancy getting shot blasted on the outside! I was there last year too, when it seemed less busy down this way. I think more people ventured west beyond the jump this year, having seen the onboards from last year.

So just to add my experience. Yep, it was a really great this year. Personally, I much preferred the weather this year. It made walking around much nicer! Plus having a coat/pockets meant I didn't have to lug a bag about. I have to admit I was shivering waiting for the cars to arrive some of those mornings though! I did Shakedown, Urria, Kakaristo, Ruuhimäki and went to the podium ceremony. One of the highlights for me was on Urria at Hirvonen's jump for SS4. I got a clear view from near the crossing after the jump. Before the stage started, I couldn't believe it when the Solberg family turned up and stood right behind me! Petter, Oliver, Pernilla and Oscar! I got to talk to Oscar Solberg (seemed surprised I knew who he was! :D ) about his rallying and he talked about Henning's experience with the new Fabia. I also had a quick chat (I didn't want to bother any of them too much) with Petter about Rally GB. It was nice to be able to thank him for doing it in person! I have to admit that I took the chance to have a picture with Petter and another later with Oliver and Oscar together, which I was going to do as a selfie but Petter offered to take it for me! That alone was pretty surreal/amusing, looking at Petter taking my picture! :D The atmosphere was surprisingly relaxed (that's Scandinavians for you though!) considering their presence in the crowd and they were really friendly. A great memory for me.

Otherwise, I did a 50/50 mix of public 'tourist' areas and nice spots off the beaten track, so to speak. Considering I had done less preparation than I'd have liked to, I was happy with the spots I ended up in and had a great time overall. I think I'll have to go again next year now... I did it as a one off last year, but it's a very addictive event!

I'll try and add some photos below...

Another Neste Rally Finland is done. This year we were out with a sofa which was very useful on powerstage first pass , because weather was so cold.
We were on Harju first pass , then we were moving to Moksi stage where we stayed night and two passes. When Moksi was done we set our target with sofa to Päijala stage to see this faimous corner(1.7km from our camp) where every year is crashes and this corner didn't let our hopes down. After first pass on Päijala we moved sofa back to camp and traveled to Ruuhimäki stages( we were learned from last year that after second passs its impossible to get out from päijala). Around 23 o'clock we moved our sofa from camp to tribune to be ready for powerstage - which was big mistake(rain) . After moving sofa to tribune then we get our blanket and sleeping bags and that load covering plastic to protect our sofa and ourselfs from rain. Night was not so cold to sleep almost open sky but before ruuhimäki first pass weather changed and wind was blowing and temperature dropped tramaticaly. Now we were very glad to have sleeping bags and cover with along us to keep us warm. Thats was nice weekend and hopefully not the last one with traveling with sofa along the rally stages

I add some pictures to keep some extreme fans awake and i am very thankful when somebody can share to me some pictures from our journey with sofa - because we didnt saved all that.

I don't know how it was measured, whether it was overall or just on a single stage, but I overheard some talk that this weekend was the closest that R2s have ever been to the pace of the WRC cars. A quick look makes me think it could be in the overall result?

For sure not. I made a very quick check (only Rally Finland) and they were closer two or three times in the overall time difference (that depends on the route length) and even more times in difference in seconds per kilometer. The difference was smallest in the first year of 1.6T cars in 2011 (logically) and massively smaller than this weekend.

2019 1st R2 +24:36,9 +4,80 s/km
2011 1st R2 +19:01,4 +3,63 s/km

Four years after our last visit and had one of the best rallies ever. Great event. We did 4 stages on Friday, 4 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.
So, so fast everywhere, really amazing. Joost couldn't make it, but already promised to try and come next year haha.

A bit late, but huge congrats to Tanak/Jarveoja and Toyota for the win and hat off for Breen/Nagle; I didn't imagine Breen would be able to be so fast and consistent on his first outing with the i20. Well done!

Conspiracy theory:
Check out the long look Ogier gives to Tänak's rear wing then goes to his car and looks at his. He probably knew already at that point!

the more i watch these Rally Finland videos the more i come to conclusion we need more these fast rallies into calendar. One is not enough (ok two with Sweden), bring Poland back or add Estonian in or please FIA search some other country with these kind of fast roads.

amazing!

Australia 2017 was faster than Sweden 2018. But I agree, there should be something to bridge the gap between Finland and next fastest events, now Finland is like 10% faster than others. Although Rally Estonia had outrageously fast stages, there were also very slow stages so the total average speed was slower than Rally Finland.

I know this rally is only over but when do they release proposed dates for 2020? Wouldn't mind getting Accomadation booked early

Absolutely wonderful rally as usual!
Has nothing to comment on except possibly more and longer stages ;).

Very impressed by Tänak who wins the rally, the EP who really had speed, Breen and Mikkelsen who drove very well and not least Tom Kristiansson who wins the JWRC.

Päijälä was the same stage in 2017 and 2019. Let's compare the times from first runs

2017 Latvala 10:55.5
2019 Meeke 10:37.4

That's 18 seconds quicker! The 2017 Latvala would have been the slowest WRC car in 2019 (save for Greensmith).

Comparing the fastest R5 and R2, there are even bigger gaps, but then again both Fabia R5 and Fiesta R2 were upgraded in between.

In 2017 the conditions were slightly damp, in 2019 completely dry.

Looking at the times section by section, it seems the marginal is smaller on the very fast sections and higher on more technical roads.
