Breen and Mikkelsen also impressive today and especially compared to their team-leader.

Which is great for Latvala cause he always looses time on Harju.
New Fiesta R5 has shown a little more promise today in the hands of Katsuta at least.

Biggest disappointment has been the pace of the Fords in general.
Greensmith relative to Suninen is probably about right for him on only his 2nd outing, but why they are detached from the others is strange.
Neuville this morning wasn’t great, but this afternoon been ok.
You could argue everybody else has been good..

Toyota is obviously fast here and also have a new engine upgrade. Hyundai invested a lot of development time/money on improving here, Citroen seemingly a bit as well and they were already very fast here last year (2nd).
MSport struggled last year and didn't seem to invest much now either. Evans did Estonia, but it's questionable how much development work got done if he wasn't feeling 100% after the 2nd stage, also he is not here now so he can't easily tell Suninen what setup changes worked between stages for example. Wilson seemed to talk about Evan being missed to help the others (I assume he meant with setup).
Thousandlakes
2nd August 2019, 17:06
I think Suninen should be much faster if compare Greensmith. Last stage Suninen already lost from him. And we cant say that Greensmith is superfast in his second wrc competition. Whats wrong? Car Issues? Last year he was fastest Ford.

Amazing how close this rally is, especially on stage 8 when 2-3-4 were tied on exactly the same time . . Remarkable.
Got to love Breen though, great performance and every stage end interview his attitude is fantastic, not just this rally but since being in the wrc he comes across as a guy that knows he has got the best job in the world.

Wouldn`t call a 2.6 sec loss to first place outclassing, even more properly outclassing... and you have to count road order. Far from it, still, good competition.

The Japanese driver has right-rear wheel damage and is limping through to the stage end slowly. We understand that he hit a gate on the first corner of the stage.
He's taken his helmet off at the side of the stage, so it doesn't look like he will go any further. More news as we have it.

Even if JML and Meeke backed off to the point where Lappi moved ahead into second, that would have been a good team result. I know having the three Toyota drivers fighting was great to watch, but I don't understand why at least one of them was given orders to hold back a bit just in case. Now one has retired and another could have been.

Is this a tactical mistake again by Toyota? Meeke out and Latvala loosing (will likely loose a bit in next stage as well) while "fighting" with Tanak when everyone else is down (even Lappi).
In a way this is similar to Portugal. "No team orders" is nice from sporting principle, but maybe not the best idea or winning championships.

Well that was only a matter of time I guess, they are all pushing almost beyond their limits.
Mäkinen needs to tell Meeke to go 99% after he has a stage win or very close. It is in these situations he normally gets to hot-headed - and does a mistake.

Sometimes it seems that people keep forgetting that to have 3 or 4 guys in a few seconds, you need all of them to be going at their maximum. And having a six second gap is nothing you can really control, when the top 4 are going at it.
Shit happens and the world doesn't stop.

Lindholm again faster at 1st split from Kalle, and with not a small margin
One particular thing about Rovanperä is that despite his age he has shown repeatedly this year that he can control the pace when he has a solid lead and doesn't get into a mad race for winning stages with crews who can't endanger him even when they go faster (like several times with Ostberg before). If Lindholm does one superfast stage and then loose minutes on the other then it's ok to let him be...

Only Ostberg (Sweden) and Greensmith (Monte Carlo) managed to finish ahead of Rovanperä through the all events started this year (and Pieniazek if we count Rovanperä's accident in Corsica). Otherwise he won all events. That's what counts and the car reliability is a big part of the game. Kopecký was second behind Rovanperä in both outings he did and now Loubet is safely second behind Rovanperä in his first outing with the Fabia Evo. I really don't see any reason for complains.
If I shall complain I would do that about Fiesta Mk.II which definitely does seem to lack and that is worrying for me. I would definitely like to have closer competition even as a Škoda fan. The victories taste better if there is a good fight for them (even if they don't come everytime). It's only good if VW or Citroën get fast.

Well the new Fiesta is indeed worrying, afaik running R5 is one of the main incomes for MSport (certainly on the rally part). Less income, less likely they will be competitive and afford good drivers on WRC level.

My feeling is that the Fabia Evo is a step forward but not yet a big one. On gravel at least the drivers have been complaining about a loose rear end, so maybe there is some work to do. Kalle himself said he felt there is more speed in the car when the set up is right.
Also should consider, as Mirek pointed out, that Kalle is leading the category comfortably so no need to push too hard. Lindholm has nothing to lose.

I find it strange.. presumably they did back to back tests with the old car, and had a good idea of how that compared to the competition.
Did they rush the new car out before it was ready?

Definitely, confidence is a huge factor so whatever setup makes the driver confident is probably more important than the theoretical performance potential of the setup.

Rovanperä was on the RPM limiter on that straight. If they didn't change the gearing for the Evo (which is possible) they could actually be around as fast as Tänak on that straight. I guess this goes down to the fact that the engine doesn't need to battle the huge aero.
