Kalle is the only WRC2 entry :(

Lefebvre back, Sordo Out, Østberg out.

...and most importantly, Serderidis is the only WRC Trophy entry!

I hope the spectator areas are a lot better this year. Please share your thoughts once you have attended. I've been twice and both times were a waste when compared to spectating in Finland, Germany, Spain and Mexico.

One interesting thing to watch would be the AP4 times against the R5 guys to see a comparison.

It looks like the FIA has re-arranged the entry list, so that all ASN cars are numbered after FIA cars. If this becomes the start list order then Brendan Reeves's AP4 car will start behind an R2 car!

Most of events have had very fast (like Camilli or Veiby) R5 drivers starting after WRC3 (R2/3 cars)

Both of them can be as slow as they want, finishing equals winning :p

Kalle posted on his facebook this legendary video from a Finnish rally from the 80's. The Wartburg rolls and the co-driver is interviewed, saying "We're trying to fix the car so we can get to the finish. We're the only in our class so finishing means a trophy" :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p92FLaoO9M8

It's really a shame that the final of the season has become a joke like this. The last rally of the season should be a great one, the best of the year, as RAC was back in the day and as Wales would be this year as well.

Will do, going to take a camera and a Go Pro, we may stick to the spectator zones, will decide after the first day how we find them and go from there. The week I get back I am going to spectate the Rally NZ event which is our candidate event for if we ever want to get back into the WRC. I would co-drive in it, but not had the opportunity so far as the two drivers I have co-driven for this year are both not able to compete.

Great, good luck!
It is nearly impossible to go outside of any spectator zones hence why they are overcrowded. Aus is tightly policed.

Good question!

We never went in too early. Earliest was 3-4 hours and there were already workers in place. I have no idea what time road closures take place. Do keep us posted because I would seriously reconsider spectating if that were the case. Thanks!

Looking forward to it, flying in Wednesday next week. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether shakedown is worth attending etc?

You'd have to get incredibly early (like 3am or something). Even then, the marshals could come across you and ask you to move on. They're over the top.

When I worked on WRC events the road closure was normally 3hrs in advance of the rally, but that was a couple of years ago now. And yeah as long as the people weren't on the road you couldn't do anything about them unless they were in a dangerous spot. Suddenly feeling less excited if Australia is that pedantic about spectating! I will try my luck though and see what happens!

True its difficult to leave spectator zones. But there are many places to walk to beyond and even to drive close by. And if you are friendly to marshalls and in position 1 hour before it was fine last years. Good luck.

Do you think Craig & Stephane are in jeprody for next year? I remember some time ago I saw on this forum that Breen was scheduled to do 11 rounds this year and 9 rounds this year while Lefebvre will do half the champ. and will concentrate on the R5 program, can anyone deny or confirm?

No, it's just that Matton needs results to show to those that give him money. Especially since it doesn't look like he's getting Ogier.

His quote:"For the junior drivers, I would like to see a bit more pace and maybe a bit more risk on this rally,"

It's totally clear that the "pace" part is mostly about Lefevbre who only showed decent speed in Poland and crashed just about everywhere else. The "a bit more risk" is clearly aimed at Breen.

12 WRC cars will start in Australia.
9 will be driven by winners of WRC events.
Does anyone know if 75% of starters being previous WRC winners is a record.
Even more intriguing when you consider by teams
100% of MSport drivers,
100% of Hyundai drivers,
100% of Toyota drivers,
but just 25% if Citroen drivers are are previous WRC winners.

For anyone going, I've made a custom google map with all the locations of the official spectator areas, sorted into days, with a description and times for each. I think you'll need a google account to access it though

https://drive.google.com/open?id=172A7Pnu4HFjPWd9Q4jpKiaY1KSiSUrjp&usp=sharing

I did a bit of a reccy ride yesterday and part of the course, and noticed along the way they had the yellow/white tape and red/white tape on the side where some 4wd/single tracks lead to the course. Does anyone know if we can go to these points, but they're just not advertised on the WRC site because they require a decent 4WD or bike to get to? This is my first rally. Cheers.

So what are the expectations? It seems we will have a rainy weekend. I’m expecting a great rally because now the drivers have no pressure anymore and they can push hard. At least Tänak seems to refer in his blog that he will hold nothing back and after wales he was joking with Estonian journalist that they don’t have to bring the car back anymore :p.

It will be Breens first time so I’m keen to see what he can do here and mikkelsen and meeke have superb starting positions to make big gains on first day if it doesn’t rain.

Yes, shakedown times have limited meaning in general for rally predictions but even less today. The 3 fastest times were all set by drivers going back out for another run (or in Neuvilles case all their runs due to problems earlier) later on a very swept road after the WRC2 cars had been through as well, so its hard to compare those with the rest.

It will be a novelty for me to check WRC+ during the daytime!

WRC2 cars? You mean Kalle Rovanperä..

Munkvy
16th November 2017, 08:47
Neuville had an oil leak apparently. He didn't turn up till at least an hour after Ogier who was first car. So yes, slightly swept road, although the road was fairly hard packed. Andreas looked one of the fastest, but results and the fact that he had 5 runs say otherwise.

Andreas car also had a welder being used under it in service after, not sure that's a great sign!?

Lefebvre was a bit ragged where we watched, and Paddon looked aggressive, but very different results!

Rovanpera looked tidy but unspectacular, which is probably a good thing. Interestingly of the Australians, the fastest looked to be Dalton in the Skoda R5, followed by Reeves in the Mazda AP4, with both looking more aggressive than Rovanpera. Time will tell which ones of them make the finish I guess.

Overall a nice day out, but yes the Aussie marshalls are very by the book, friendly but no ability to think about what is realistically safe, just focused on what they have been told by their bosses, which is a little sad. Tomorrow we will try find some good spots and get a few videos and photos as todays spot was pretty poor with too many trees in the way!

WRC2 cars? You mean Kalle Rovanperä..

He may be the only WRC2 championship entry, but there are an assortment of local R5, AP4 etc also running as WRC2 entries aren't they? There are 9 non-WRC cars listed in the shakedown results anyway, and most them had been through before those 3 fastest times.

You make a good point, he looked quite on the limit. You could spot the guys that were ragged as they threw up a lot more dust as they were off line in the dirty bits of road.

Seems if you are an R5 car you start in front of ASN cars, and fortunately in front of the Japanese gentleman drivers!

I hope Brendan Reeves gets a bigger gap between him and the R2 car in front of him, 5mins isn't enough on a long stage that's for sure!

Just getting up to go to first stage now, it's been raining in the night, but not currently, it's warm(ish) and calm here, some dark clouds on the horizon though.

Watched SS1, near the spectator zone, it's close enough to the start that you can hear the cars launching off the start line, there was some hanging dust, but certainly not bad and it cleared with plenty of time for next car. We watched entire field (so 2 hours to get through them!), so only caught the tail of the field at SS3, going to wait here for it to run as SS6, then off to the Super Specials tonight.

SS3/6 is slightly damp underfoot, but drying fast. Should be clean and dry and hard packed for second run. MSport guys said it was 21 degrees in the ground already here.

Couple of pics, I watched WRC cars rather than looking through the lense, so don't really have any pics of them. Citroens were definitely the most wild looking at the beginning of the stage!

SS1, slightly sideways Citroens, all much wider lines than the other cars:

Reeves:

Looking forward to seeing this in 6, it was very sideways in 3 but I didn't have camera handy:

https://image.ibb.co/j1uvtR/DSC03054.jpg

Australian Police motorbikes... Some are friendly, some are very not friendly! We got moved on twice by them in SS1. At SS3 the cops are from a different area and very friendly:

So as it stands Ogier has 3 cars sweeping ahead of him tomorrow - that will even things up.
Pleased with the pace of the Citroens. I think people have mis-interpreted the 'Loeb' effect. I suspect Meeke was saying what they need to do all along but they weren't about to listen to the rosbif connard. Loeb just confirmed the car was a pile of crap and they then knew Meeke had been right all along.

So, SS6 was good fun, we managed to get away from the marshals and go down the stage about 1km from the junction we entered at and setup on a 90 degree right opening to a left and onto a straight. Very dusty for the first 6-8 cars, with aggressive cutting bringing more dirt out. The Hyundais and Evans all looked to understeer through here (around at 18-20km mark of the stage). The road had been worn down completely and was rock hard, so I imagine soft tyres would have been hard work!

Took pics of most of the WRC cars, so easy to compare lines. Managed to take pics of a lot of the field, so will spam you a bit now...

As was Mike Young, interestingly he was faster than the WRC Trophy guy and most of the ARC Evos and Subarus, which is impressive on a relatively fast and flowing road:

Only one of the Japanese gentlemen drivers made it this far:

Pinter was ok, but not as committed as I was expecting:

Nathan Quinn had a left front puncture, which he was driving out on, so giving Molly Taylor a big advantage in the points I suspect:

to be fair everyone was loosing bits after the watersplash but M-sport the most. Already in Wales at the last stage you could also see Ogiers diffusor hanging and now they both lost it with Tänak, Tänak even twice....and not to mention losing the rear spoiler in poland and with Mads in sweden.

This article says it's the same system but it's just made broader to describe the road in greater detail

Ohh and the super special was rubbish, good spectacle and lots of people, but it had a gravel covered tarmac section, which swept towards the end, and they sent groups of 5 cars out at a time to tackle it twice. So the last group (including Tanak, Neuville and Ogier) got much cleaner conditions, allowing them to go quite a bit faster. At the least they should have run it in rally order! But I guess that's rallying?

Even though Mikkelsen won last year, I was surprised by his pace. Also a big surprise from Meeke, nice to see the Citroens doing well. The hugest disappointment was from Paddon. He should have shown pace here in his almost home event with a good starting position. Not to mention the lack of pace in Wales and crashes in Finland and Sardegna...not much to prove why he should have a full season next year.

The Fiesta had been the strongest car all year so cant really complain. Plus any problems havent done them that much harm given the two titles, podiums on every rally and all drivers winning an event.

Does Paddon's car have exactly the same parts as Neuville's and Mikkelsen's? (or was there only enough new parts for Neuville and Mikkelsen to use and spares at the service are?

What is Paddon's car weigh with crew compared to his team mates. I would suspect the jumbo co-driver gives a slight power to weight ratio disadvantage in some conditions. (How much does Marshall weigh compared Kennard?) Are there any little persom brit co-drivers available for a try out?

I think Mads has had more problems than the M-Sport guys because ever since he bought the car, he has been developing it in his own direction, without any support from the team or the factory.

The Fiesta problems in Australia are aero and tyre as far as I can see. Just because they are 40 seconds adrift here (only 40, NOT 2 mins) does not mean that Ostberg's issues were anything other than poor preparation and loss of mojo.

Exactly the reason Henning had to get Ilka as co-driver (it was that or Weight Watchers!) - Seb M is not much different to Kennard in build - I doubt he's more than 165 llbs

I suspect Meeke was saying what they need to do all along but they weren't about to listen to the rosbif connard. Loeb just confirmed the car was a pile of crap and they then knew Meeke had been right all along.

Suffering from selective memory, Mintex? During 2016 Meeke and Citroen were pretty happy with the C3 development, showing high expectations for 2017. The problems, and the complains, only came after season started.

Prior to ’16 WRGB, Meeke even said he was living a dream: “A year like this is what I’ve always wanted. It’s been the chance to develop a car with a world-beating manufacturer like Citroën from scratch – the chance to build a team around myself and put us both into the best possible position to challenge for the championship. It’s been an absolute privilege to work with the team. It’s been brilliant.” https://www.msauk.org/Meeke-targeting-home-glory-on-Citroen-DS3-swansong

In December, at the C3 presentation, Matton hugely praised Meeke’s work in the car development and the Brit was confident about the car potential: http://www.wrc.com/en/wrc/news/december-2016/meeke-on-new-citroen/page/4145--12-12-.html

It’s quite clear that the car issues were a team failure; therefore all people involved on the C3 development, including Meeke, are responsible for it. Now, we can only hope they will be strong enough to react and find ways to make the C3 a title contender. Honestly, I believe they will and, apparently, they’re already showing they can do it.

Btw, nice show from Mikkelsen today. Still a long way to go, but having another different rally winner this year would be remarkable.

All the cars have the same spec, apart from the new rear bumper/fender which has been on Neuville's car only since Wales.

Keep in mind these cars carry ballast to be brought up to the minimum weight anyway, and the occupants weights are rather central which is not too bad. The difference in weight among all the crews (driver+codriver) is much less than you might expect.

Not that surprised at the overall results so far.

Mikkelsen and Meeke had road position advantage and no big issues while all others had either one or both of them. Seemingly C3 works on dry gravel now, good.

Points:

- Lefevbre under real pressure now with Meeke doing good and Breen also very good considering he never drove here before

- Paddon relative to Mikkelsen/Neuville quite bad

- Ford, what a difference from "win all" in Wales

- Toyota still has issues with both speed and reliability

Before the start of the season he was not an obvious choice for Hyundai, given that they had 3 drivers under contract and Paddon had about same speed as Mikkelsen on gravel.

If you mean after the test in Portugal, then signing him could have made them win manu champs. But it's easy to be clever about it now. It didn't look like a bad choice at first either, Paddon was in the lead in Sardinia before crashing and ended 2nd in Poland.

There’s no record of Meeke complaining before MC, on the contrary. After Sweden it was pretty clear the WHOLE team was completely lost about the car issues and Meeke started getting vocal, while Matton stated that during development tests drivers didn’t report any major issue. Apparently, confidence was mutually broken.

More than excusing or blaming Meeke, what matters now, once the team kept all drivers and has a new tech chief, it’s to look ahead and hope for a fast and successful evolution of the C3. Citroen needs to be able to fight for the title. Fingers crossed.
