Before the start of the season he was not an obvious choice for Hyundai, given that they had 3 drivers under contract and Paddon had about same speed as Mikkelsen on gravel.
If you mean after the test in Portugal, then signing him could have made them win manu champs. But it's easy to be clever about it now. It didn't look like a bad choice at first either, Paddon was in the lead in Sardinia before crashing and ended 2nd in Poland.
Many of us didnt think Paddon or Sordo were the strongest from the start. Mikkelsen was on the up and starting to produce wins with VW.

Clearly this is especially selective view.
You list 2 mistakes in 2,5 years... and at the same time say that two wins were "handed" by others mistakes. Turning it around in those cases (especially 2015 Spain) he kept his calm even when fighting off Latvala and it gave him the win. Can also list other examples like Portugal last year and fighting off Ogier, or the mentioned Australia.
In Germany this year he lost the lead on Friday in heavy rain and late road position with only some seconds lost on one breaking, Tanak who won was off the road and extremely lucky to climb up.
So no I don't see any big trend there. He's certainly not as stable as Ogier, but compared to all others drivers he's pretty average.
(Neuville has at least 3 DNF-offs under pressure this year, Tanak has Poland and Finland and so on)
As to how much of a mistake this was we'll see on the onboard, 3 other top drivers were off on this stage as well.

I'm following his stage end comment lately and he always sounds like a beaten man. I'm very sorry for him because it should be a very difficult moment for him as a driver. Going from an Ogier-beater and possible new world champion to pronely crashing and not showing speed anymore should be hard. Also the crash in Montecarlo didn't help.
I hope he will put things together but it will be difficult with half a program next year...

naaaaahhh.
In Germany this year he lost the lead on Friday in heavy rain and late road position with only so some seconds lost on one breaking, Tanak who won was off the road and extremely lucky to climb up.
So no I don't see any big trend there. He's certainly not as stable as Ogier, but compared to all others drivers he's pretty average.
(Neuville has at least 3 offs under pressure this year, Tanak has Poland and Finland and so on)
As to how much of a mistake this was we'll see on the onboard, 3 other top drivers were off on this stage as well.

Well, tbh, i wouldn't count NORF and Poland mistakes made under pressure, especially the first one, although winning in Poland was a must and 2. wasn't an option. Without that need a solid 2. Would have been achieved.

In NORF Tanak got self-induced puncure from first place while his gap was reducing. In Poland well it was his choice to push on instead of settling for 2nd afaik. Ogier would have probably settled for 2nd which is why he is WDC this year.
Again this is not really criticism, just pointing out that a few mistakes per year are normal to all drivers, only Ogier stands out positively. Breen partly as well but he's not really fighting for wins.

When you see these roads, you don't think of needing a lot of spares, they are mostly smooth, fast and flowing. Not a huge amount of things to hit as long as you stay on the forestry roads. It's pushing past the limits or the parts where the surface changes that things become a problem from what I could see of walking stages today.
We went to the 1st stage, the 3rd and the last proper stage today and had mixed success. The first stage there was reasonably heavy rain on the way in, which eased as soon as we arrived. We watched from 2-3km into the stage which is the longest of the weekend. Again the Citroens looked very loose and it was definitely wet but drying, however certainly some wet points in the 2-300m we could see, but the WRC cars all seemed to get through ok, got a few pics from this stage, but as it was a spectator zone we didn't really have a good place to actually watch from!
Andreas was definitely quite sideways:
https://image.ibb.co/kcaqCm/DSC03207.jpg
Evans from Australia rejoined, and although it's a very ugly car, he was looking quick and committed:

Once again Mike Young was committed, good to see someone properly sliding a FWD:

Not sure who this was from the State field, but looked very committed, just right at the limit of the camera range, he did this for 2-3 corners until he got close to us:

Just saw the daily highlights.
Mikkelsens' mistake was not on same spot as Ogier/Neuville/Meeke. It was quite innocent touch-up that you see with every driver on just about every stage, this kind would usually end with puncture if it's against rock/concrete but against sidebanks it typically does nothing. Double puncture from that is quite some luck.

I can´t really follow the line of thinking here.
One spare, two punctures = you won´t win
Two spares, two punctures = still in the game.
Knowing you have only one spare, shouldn´t it make you drive more careful? Loosing time also, maybe?
There´s also a car and a driver and also what happens in their interaction, eg. skillness is more important than a car going 0,1 sec slower with two spare.
So, no I don´t follow. And smooth roads and still a whole chunk of punctures?

But with two spares you need to push harder to not loose too much time to those who has one so...
It didn't work for the Citroëns with two spares, losing loads of time with 16 and 33sec behind in Nambucca in the first loop then Meek hits a bridge pushing too hard.
Hasn't been many punctures here, Breen had one off the rim?

These bridges are quite tricky, you can easily loose a lot. It's better step back a little and get to the finish maybe sec slower and still be in the game. He is experienced enough and could know that... In the RBR (game) I was often crash into the bridge and lose all. And pretty muh every bridge was behind some corner and I push pretty much and not get t the finish.. Guys I know is the game but similar in the reality..

These decisions always look horrible in hindsight. But you play the percentages and sport is always about taking calculated risks. I know you know that.

Just seen the daily highlights and Meeke's minor mistake at the bridge, and Yves Matton's decision to retire the car, I really hope someone up there at the PSA group will show him the door or to be precise, throw him off the bridge...

Ogier have luck all year with that kind of mistakes. When other made mistake they can't continue... And don't say he could manage the best from it. We all know if other were more consistent he would not be in these position right now. He is not even fast these year, on some ocasions yes but not almost everywhere.
Wow about those stupidity of people who were lying on the side of the roads!!! Someone really needs to drive over their hands so they can learn that they ruin sport... How could some insects are that stupid? I don't understand

Not expecting David Evans to write a single word about this, and certainly there will be no yellow card for the event. The Aussies pay far too much money to lose their rally.
Poland on the other hand... well, they really need to get their act together! Did you know that there were spectators mere feet away from the road on the straight? Madness! They're finished! Finished, I say!!!

Well, here you have 2 idiots on the onboard footage. Not acceptable, but only 2. No organizer can prevent this, you cannot oversee each and every corner.
In Poland you had hundreds (maybe thousands) of people. Also safety cars didn't always bother to stop on places where a large number of spectators were unsafe. That's a very different situation.

Watched Meeke clip the bridge .. it was a bit unlucky. And he was rightly furious to be told to retire.
On Ogier, he clearly wasnt fully-concentred here. Job done in Wales and little chance in Aus with his road position.
Tanak did well closing on completing M-Sports podium on every round in this season record.

This must be the dumbest thing I've ever seen, 3:15 into Welsh Creek with Meeke and Latvala. This alone should be enough to boot this ridiculous rally out of this championship.
Has anyone sent this to someone in the FIA?
Let's spam FIA safety people until they drop this crappy rally. If Poland was booted out for less, they should totally go too.
