Realy don't know what to expect from this one, how many stages a day is possible? Some things we have to see?

Go on then I think I'm going to be at this one too. I last went in 2015 and really enjoyed it. Just need to sort out a flight.

Need to do a bit of research because as I understand it the stage names often change, but that doesn't mean they are new stages by any means. I don't have enough experience to start recommending stages. I just know that if you want to watch the famous roundabout then definitely wear some walking boots! Not super easy to stand on that banking.

There's excellent viewing in the village of Viabala des arc which is ss3. El montmell on Saturday is an excellent fast stage with plenty of cuts. But there's a new stage on Saturday so I'll have to wait to drive that and see. The opening section of the Pradit stage is fast and bumpy with some excellent viewing, it's the power stage also. The service on Friday evening is brilliant as well, watching the change over from gravel to tarmac spec

I think it would be very difficult to watch more than 2 stages on Friday. There's only 1 hour between the start of the 1-st stage and the 3-rd and you have to drive at least 30 min. from the start of ss1 to the start of ss3 which is the shortest route. Add 3 min gaps probably for the WRC cars and the time to go back to the car and the time to park for the next stage, so it's getting really harder to do it. Last year we were watching ss3 at the end of the tarmac section, not bad but nothing special too. Gorban and Veiby lost the rear of the car on the hairpin to the gravel section, and that's was it. The second pass we were on the compression where Kruuda has his crash in 2014. I'm talking about this place: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU2NgA6UuyQ. It's really spectacular, I'm considering to go there again this year. There's also alternative path along the stage meaning you can reach the place even coming later. There's also nice looking spectating place in the woods towards the end of ss3 but never been there, maybe I'll try to check it this year but I need to figure out the easiest way to go, as it looks a bit remote from the other zones.
On Saturday it looks like there's a chance to watch more 2 stages with 2 min gaps for the wrc cars. If you are near the start of El Montmell watching the first 20 cars, maybe it would be possible to go towards the end of Savalla but Savalla is a new stage( for me ) not sure where you can watch and how is the acces.
If somebody has any ideas how to watch more stages on Friday, feel free to share it.

13th July 2017, 13:23
im hugely disappointed in this itinerary, like you said you cant watch more than 2 stages per day which makes 6 stages total over weekend. For example in finland we will see 5 stages on friday ALONE.

what a *******

MartijnS
13th July 2017, 19:49
Friday really tough yes, same as last year. We had to walk quite a big end to Terra Alta cause of the mud and some trouble on the way to the stage from the first stage and arrived there when the same car passed as the last we seen on the first stage, so that made no sense.
Saturday 4 stages should be possible if you leave after the WRCs on the first one of the loop I think. Sunday we did 3 last year.

Edit: two on sunday..

I wonder who will be entering - there will be Ogier, Tanak, Evans, Paddon, Neuville, Sordo, JML, Hänninen, Lappi I assume. Who will Citroen send - Meeke, Breen, Mikkelsen, Lefebrve or Al Qassimi?

Ostberg and Sunnien too I wonder?

Over the past few years we have managed two stages on Friday, three Saturday then two on Sunday.

Andre Oliveira
26th July 2017, 20:19
Suninen initial plan was Poland, Finland and Wales (depending WRC2 standings).

AnttiL
26th July 2017, 20:45
Who will Citroen send - Meeke, Breen, Mikkelsen, Lefebrve or Al Qassimi?

I think they already said that Lefebvre's next rally is Spain and Mikkelsen is a free agent after Deutchland. So most likely it's just Meeke-Breen-Lefebvre. Or maybe, regarding the recent news, they'll put Loeb in the car?

I wonder what Østberg's situation is, does he really have a problem with getting the tarmac suspension for the new Fiesta and will he contest Spain as well with WRC2 car or just skip it?

The 'fifth man' has done his reputation no harm this season. To be a consistent finisher in such a difficult car speaks volumes - Craig is not a second Matthew Wilson (ask Scott for his opinion please, someone!). It was Al Qassimi who was strongly pro-Breen and gave him his first rides so I can't imagine Craig will lose too much sleep.

Most likely just this. Not sure about Østberg though since he skipped both earlier tarmac rallies of the year partly for not having a proper tarmac suspension set up in his car yet.

For WRC2 class we should see Kopecky and Nordgren on Skoda, and Suninen and Camilli (outside points) on Ford.

Finally the entry list

Østberg's in.
Camilli, Veiby, Bergkvist and Loubet on R5 cars outside WRC2, while the actual WRC2 will probably be Kopecky's race with Suninen being the best challenger.
Interestingly enough, Serderidis is entered, but not in WRC Trophy against Raoux and Gorban.

Didn't realise Rhys Yates was planning on doing Catalunya. Don't expect too much pace from him though.

Also didn't know three-time world champion cyclist Oscar Freire was rallying now. He's on the national portion of the list in a Kia GT.

R5 is a factory-built homologated 1.6T rally car, n5 is a proto class car, which use a chassie from one manu and different components from other cars. Mitsu evo engine, 4wd system in a Fiesta r5 replica shell is a popular choice, but there are many others. They say they can be 2-4 times cheaper than the r5.

Keep in mind there are also real factory R5 cars and they don´t cost EUR 180 000,- ;) OK, they don´ t cost twice more, but for sure they cost more then usual customer kits.

Tarmop
20th September 2017, 10:29
Well, i made my calculation based on a medium price of a competitive new R5 car, which i thought is 200k. A multiple Estonian champion (has raced/owned WRC cars, S2000, N`s) is also building himself one (Audi S1) and he said that is could be 2-4 times cheaper, depending on what components are used. Especially when one can save on expensive jobs and doesn`t count them.

Time for speculation.

Ogier has three wins from four last years, but I guess he plays it safe and just goes for a podium finish, even less if Neuville retires. Neuville stated it's the world title or nothing, but it could be also mind games. Latvala has also a string of good results from Spain but will he suffer again from technical problems? Does Sordo have extra pressure of fighting for his seat? He had a clean year without driving errors until Finland and Germany, is he losing it? Mikkelsen has been fast on tarmac this year and fast in Spain but how does he sit in the new car and team? Tänak won in Germany, but his second half of the season has been more or less win or bin, can it be anything between? Won't expect much from Meeke, Evans or Lefebvre. Hänninen can surprise on the beginning of the rally, Lappi at the end of it. Østberg has been in top 6 for the last four years so why not, he's been fast on the opening stages of the rally this season but started to lose it after the friday mid day service.

If conditions are dry, which it seems to be, i think we can expect Sordo near the top spot.
I also do think Tanak will be right up there once again, also latvalla.
Ogier going for the safe aproach, and Neuville struglling to keep up whit the front runners.

DMACK Enters New Era With WRC Gravel Tyre In Spain
• First new DMACK WRC gravel tyre tread for five years.
• New WRC tyre features upgraded compounds and construction.
• Jon Armstrong takes up second WRC 2 prize drive.
• Deciding final round of DMACK-backed FIA Junior WRC.
For the first time in five years, DMACK will unveil a new gravel tread pattern for WRC cars in the FIA World Rally Championship. The DMG+2 has been used since 2012, helping DMACK to lead five WRC events and win 47 gravel stages, but it will make way for the new DMG+22 at Rally RACC - Rally de España next week.
It was on this event that DMACK scored its very first WRC stage win back in 2012 and the British tyre manufacturer is now set to enter a new era. The new DMG+22 tyre features the same tread pattern which has been used successfully in WRC 2 and WRC 3 this season and should be more suited to the final three events remaining this year.
The pattern is more open than its predecessor, providing enhanced performance in wet, muddy and loose conditions, and features a revised run-flat construction. Both permitted compounds, the soft GS84 and hard GH34, are softer than the original compounds used earlier in the season.
DMACK’s WRC stars Elfyn Evans and Dan Barritt will use the new gravel tyres for Friday’s opening day – they have a total of 16 tyres at their disposal. Then their Ford Fiesta WRC will get changed to Tarmac specification by the expert M-Sport World Rally Team technicians during a specially-extended service on Friday evening.
They swap to DMT-RC22 asphalt tyres and have S6+ soft and H6+BB hard options for two days of racing on Spain’s smooth, flowing Tarmac roads.
After a strong display on their WRC 2 debut in Germany, Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy prize-winners Jon Armstrong and Noel O’Sullivan have their second event in a M-Sport Fiesta R5 in Spain.
It’s also the final round of the DMACK-backed FIA Junior WRC with local-stars Nil Solans and Miki Ibanez aiming to shine on their home rally to lift the coveted title.
Rally de España starts from Salou on Thursday evening with six gravel tests on Friday in the hills to the west of the town. Then it’s two full days on Tarmac to the north of Salou before the final podium on Sunday afternoon.
Dick Cormack, DMACK managing director, said: “We’ve been working hard on development this season and the new WRC gravel tyres are the result of ongoing assessment and evaluation during events this year. We are confident that they will be more suited to the conditions on the final three rallies.”
Elfyn Evans, DMACK WRC driver, said: “We’re looking forward to trying the new specification gravel tyre in competition for the first time and it will be interesting to see how it performs in the range of conditions over the last three events. We’re pushing again for another strong drive in Spain and especially to help our M-Sport team in the manufacturer championship battle.”

Q: The I20 Coupé WRC, has it made an evolution between now and your first drive with it, in spring?
A: It's difficult to say because that's a while ago. Also, last week, I have driven with the differential set-up for Hayden Paddon, which doesn't perfectly fit my driving style on gravel. I have to adapt because it's not possible to change it for Rally Catalunya. The regulations demand that certain elements are used on multiple events. This second day has been a bit difficult, but I remain confident. The team of Hyundai succeeds in making a setup which will be better for me on gravel. Having that said, with the potential of the i20, I'm sure I can be competitive in Spain.

rage82
30th September 2017, 18:17
He says that he has to drive with Paddon's setup for the differentials in Spain because FIA has some rules about the mechanical parts to be used in couple of rallies without changing them. And this setup is not the best for Mikkelsen but despite this he's confident that he can be competitive in Spain.

From the general teams and WRC PR machine you'd have no idea anything was happening.

There was a national speech from Spain’s king a few moments ago. He blamed Catalan authorities for the current crisis. It’s hard to predict what can come next, as the referendum was promoted by the Catalan authorities and got huge support from the Catalans. In this context, to believe that the rally can go on in a perfectly normal way seems quite optimistic. Anyway, fingers crossed for the rally and, above all, fingers crossed for Catalunya and its brave people.

This will be my first and last post on the non-rally situation:

Both sides are acting like they are playing a game of chicken with cars... and none turns the wheel or brakes.

Also following trough on the Catalunyan demands, lets say they would have declared independence 48hours after the referendum as they claimed they would. That would work out just fine right... immediately changing citizenship of all the millions of people, some against their will, immediately leaving EU and introducing border controls (joining EU would take time). Immediately getting to pay salaries, retirement pay etc for everyone and so forth. Really just a political game of chicken.

I did today my recce to ss15 and 16 with my 1year old boy and wife.
Ss15 Starting from 1km before first trafic circle quite and good scenery. After circle to first village is very narrow and technical section.
Asfalt is smooth and good all in the stage.

Ss16 santa marina (also power stage 19) from start the asfalt is much roughier and maybe slippery. Before first village there is downhill with a couple of bumpy braking points before junctions. I loved especially one of them.
Also in middle point the is perhaps 2km view at stage at hills. Very good one but perhaps hard to get there....
We will see.

Tomorrow sd and maybe service park. I do not know if i'm not spectating the friday stages.

The narrow part after the start on SS16/19 should have good grip I think, it's well-known from SS Pratdip last years, great section. In general the tarmac in Catalunya is great and has good consistent grip if it's dry, apart from the very few places where gravel/dirt is thrown onto the road.

On this year's Finland shakedown, Meeke was fastest, but in the race (after SS2) he was off the pace. Meanwhile, the actual top 4 of Rally Finland was actually comprised of the four slowest works WRC drivers (not counting Al-Qassimi) of the shakedown.

And the shakedown results are here even more misleading than usually since they are now running on gravel spec but most of the rally is run on tarmac spec.

But, assuming Meeke did well on gravel spec, I expect him to do a good result as he probably does well on tarmac.

"The break was long but it was good to relax a bit, the ambitions are intact: we want to be world champion, so we want to finish ahead of Ogier and take points from him. 'Ogier and see if we are able to make a difference in one or the other stage, he is well armed, he will not let go, the race will be very tight again this weekend,' detailed the Hyundai driver to our microphone.
Before adding on the Spanish course: "The others have progressed a lot compared to the beginning of the season, we bring here our first evolutions on the car with a slightly different aerodynamics and some improvements in the engine. I hope the changes will help us make a difference. There have been a lot of races during the day on earth. On the asphalt, I think the course will suit us better than the other years . "
Good news for Neuville is the arrival of Andreas Mikkelsen in the South Korean team. The Norwegian has a good speed and is a close friend of the Belgian in recent years. "We are friends so I knew he was in contact with Hyundai, he made me pass the message by ringing at the door ... I knew it had gone well for him and I could congratulate him because I think he deserves a place in the WRC, he can help us, but everyone can do it, by interposing himself between Ogier and me, and I will have to be in front of everyone. that there will be a Neuville, Sordo and Tanak as top 3 on this rally, "concluded our compatriot.

After having been adversaries for many years, in ERC then in WRC, Thierry Neuville and Andreas Mikkelsen will finally team-mates on the occasion of the Rally of Catalonia ... and he let him know in a special way!
"I went to visit him in his apartment, dressed in the colors of the Hyundai team from head to toe, exploded with laughter Andreas Mikkelsen on the microphone of Olivier Gaspard, the special correspondent of the RTBF in Spain. was in the shower, so it was his girlfriend who opened the door to me, I went to the bathroom, and he was still in the shower. so I told him the news! He was very happy. "
Former Volkswagen official driver, who has just signed a contract until the end of the 2019 season with the South Korean team, will try to help his friend Thierry in his quest for the world title. Hyundai driver fastest at the shakedown this Thursday morning, he will already have a very important role to play this weekend.
"I will try to get used to the Hyundai as quickly as possible," said the Norwegian. "I have to help the team in the fight for the builders 'title, and Thierry in the one for the drivers' title. The team gave me a lot of practice days before the rally so that I could get to know the car and the coaching, all in a very short time. I feel good in the car, I will give everything I have to try to beat the Ford. "

Just got back from recceing the stages. This place is just beautiful and coming from Estonian autumn these crades at times are too much for me.

Shakedown was great. I was moving around a lot, at first I was where cali and rage were and the I moved to the tarmac part where all Hyundai drivers every god damn time hit the barrier. In the end I was at the so called stadium section.

Can’t wait for next days!

I am curious about how the 'Spanish/Catalonia' fans do react to Sordo at ceremonial start. Is there some hate or absolutely not, to him and other Spanish drivers? Could this be effect of his results? Who could answer at least the first question?

It's typical to switch tyres around between stages in a loop. They take two spares, take two tyres out midway and put two fresh ones in.

Of course not. The tarmac on this stage has nothing to do with the drivers changing tyres before it. Even if they had a full tarmac stage with a remote service for tyre change in between, I doubt they'd go for tarmac tyres because it's really difficult to drive with tarmac tyres gravel suspension, the combination of high grip and soft suspension is not good.
