As the Ypres Rally counts towards TER, FIA Benelux Rally Trophy, British and Belgian Championship, I put the tread here.
A true classic rally in Europe and worth a visit.

I expect 30 to 40 R5 cars. 21 cars on the entrylist for now, but already 13 R5s!
Lim I20 R5
Neuville I20 R5
Ahlin Fabia R5
Bogie Fabia R5
McCormack Fabia R5
Preston Fabia R5
Verschueren Fabia R5
Anderson Fiesta R5
Cronin Fiesta R5
Laffey Fiesta R5
Slaughter Fiesta R5
Bécaert DS3 R5
Cornelis DS3 R5

Question is if this should be in this thread or not. This thread is for European Rally Championship and Ypres is out...

I am joking, of course. But as Ypres is out of ERC, it will be quite difficult for me to be there this year. And one weekend before I will be in Cyprus. But we will see...

Would Ypres not clash with Finnish midsummer, I would be there for sure. That happened in 2015 and loved the event. I just can't choose over midsummer. So, please tell Ypres organization to move their date by a week in the future :-)

For those keen to track entries, the organisers are releasing info on their Facebook page, often before the rolling entry list gets updated - https://www.facebook.com/RallyYpres/

Interesting to see a works Skoda Fabia on the official poster and big Skoda backing for the event. Makes me wonder whether they would consider putting in one of their guys? Quite tight between Czech champ and WRC rounds so probably just a dream.

Good spot: would be good if they brought in a hot shoe. I think Skoda Belgium (or the guys that ran Loix) were planning on giving their youngster (Axel B?) an R5 debut at Ypres, but that is a 'very works' livery on the poster.

Good to see some of the 'questionable' UK entries committing early. Was worried that Bogie might not fancy it after his start to the season. I guess Tom Cave and Jonny Greer are the two other big names I hope to see appear.

Not sure if the Hyundai Cave has been using is the same as the one Lim or Neuville are earmarked to drive.

The new driver for Skoda Belgium is Achiel Boxoen. Son of a well-known Gentleman driver. He hasn't proven anything yet and next week will be his first proper event with R5, Sezoens Rally. Don't expect much from him... ;)

Some rumours from speed Magazine declaring that Hyundai could bring another Factory driver at the start in Ypres and Skoda with a multiple winner or also a factory driver..

Don't see it happen, but we can only hope :p

dodge33cymru
19th May 2017, 18:55
Boxoen and Debackere both officially on the list now.

I feel the organisers have at least one big name they are expecting. I remember during Sweden they had a screenshot of the top 10 and said something like "we know how many of these drivers will be in Ypres, but do you?". Neuville was the only obvious one.

I can't see Hyundai bringing Paddon or Sordo. I suppose Abbring isn't on the list yet, but that would surprise me. Not sure who their other options would be, but wouldn't mind seeing Cave be given the chance to continue his BRC campaign.

No shortage of choices for Skoda, but not sure who an obvious one would be. Kopecky is the tarmac expert, but Tidemand and Mikkelsen seem to their international 1 & 2 at the moment.

mousti
19th May 2017, 19:10
It could be one of his last outings of Abbring this year with Peugeot, money is running out..

Cave hopefully does a good rally this weekend and then Ypres will be probably his next one. Don't know who is putting him at the start this weekend because it's a (former) factory i20 R5 and Hyundai Motorsport is present this weekend there for him I think.

dodge33cymru

Abbring might be noticeably absent so far, but De Cecco's 208 T16 is on the entry now, for fans of nice sounding R5s.

For some reason, the question hadn't come up in my mind before, but...

Why is there still a qualifying stage? I'm grateful that there is, the Nieuwkerke Thursday is one of my highlights of my motorsport spectating year, but do either championship run these rules normally?

Anyway, happy they seem to be doing it!

Seems the route has changed a little though, so there'll be a little less tyre warming on the main road I assume. From what I can work out, the first section has been removed and a new part added in from the section where the stage used to cross over the main road.

After days of news and updates the entry list has ground to a halt on 89. There will still be more before the deadline I'm sure - although I believe the entry fee is slightly more expensive now.

Not sure who else to expect really. Maybe a few more Belgian guys (Dilley, De Mevius, Cherain??)

From the BRC there's only Matt Edwards I can think of who hasn't entered in terms of R5 guys. As for TER who knows. Was Tempestini supposed to be doing the entire series?

dupanton
29th May 2017, 16:00
I don't think we can expect Tempestini, also no De Mevius.
Dilley should be there I think, Cherain was trying to get the budget. Also, there are a few R5 cars entered but not on the entrylist yet: Gottig, Cave and Maeyaert.
Maybe we can still expect Orsak, Weijs, Ingram (Adam R2)...? Usually there are a few surprises the last days, so let's hope some people will still be added.

Think they might just have had the weekend off; five new additions this morning including Maeyaert officially and another Porsche.

De Mevius is there in an R2. Or is that a different one? Guillaume instead of Gyslain?

Whilst I expect the top few locals and Neuville to fight for the overall, I'm really intrigued to see who'll come out top of the B(r)RC contenders. I'd guess Cronin would be slight favourite, but could be a good sub-plot.

Yes, there are 2 brothers De Mevius, Ghislain and Guillaume. Guillaume drives his RACB 208 R2, his brother Ghislain drives a Fabia R5, but not in Ypres.

For the victory, it will be Neuville against Neuville and the reliability of the i20 R5. No one on the current entry list will be anywhere close...

What sort of start order is likely here, there being several different championships running ?

Just wondered in case of rain and the cutting leading to muddy roads for the later cars...

There is qualifying stage if you pay extra. About the rest, I have no idea about the starting order...

dodge33cymru
30th May 2017, 16:00
Seems to be the same as previous years - anyone who pays can do the qualifying, top 15 are chosen and the rest go on qualification times.

Not sure if paid RC4 cars will run ahead of non-paid RC2 ones (for example), but I would imagine so.

He will need the points for the Belgian championship this weekend though, so he probably better just accepts he wont be winning the rally and just reach the finish on a comfortable pace - if the 208 doesn't break down of course. 2014 still hurts me... :(

Anyone found a good test video ? All the ones I see on YT seem to be shot from the pace where the drivers turn around so there are no shots of the cars in full attack..

Test stages are mostly forbidden area for spectators ;)

There's a good onboard from Osian Pryce if you go to Dale Furniss' Facebook page (think it's linked to Ypres' official FB too).

I'm guessing there's no chance of any English-language radio this year? That's one thing I will miss from the ERC.

Maybe they will do some effort to clearify certain things in English, given the international field.

As I said a while back, if its wet the qually and start order could be crucial with mud coming from the cuts.

Åhlin has improved a lot over the last few years. He was not that far behind Evans in BRC last year, so I think he is ready to step up to a full season in WRC2. Hopefully he is able to find the budget. Maybe Malcolm Wilson is able to help? If Suninen manages to find a seat in a World Rally Car?

Nightmare first evening for Lim. Convinced Hyundai sent him out with a duff car. He got a few metres out of his awning and the car seemed to be crabbing like a wheel wasn't attached. So they had to stop and go back. Then he's pitched off by what looks like broken suspension in his second run. Then in a later third run he goes off (own fault I think) and breaks a wheel.

Lo-res shot from QS. More to come after the rally.

I was also surprised with Åhlins time. I always saw him as a bit of a semi good rally driver that wouldn't make an impact anywhere but maybe on a national level.

But ok, sure, it is only one short QS and the rally proper will show where he really stand against world class drivers...

Fredrik was always a good driver, but he has lost a lot in his career as he was focusing immediatelly and directly to WRC2, without proper experience and budget. Step down (this time to BRC) helped him a lot, like to lot of other drivers...

And we will see what will be his strategy in race. If he will try to fight with Neuville or local drivers or he will focus to keep points in BRC.

Br21 Is working in Ypres now but yes, it's standard FIA part. However the issues are often relaret to the position in car for example due to airflow in the engine compartment And possible overheating.

Meanwhile massive moment for Yates, but he managed to get away with it. Also big moment for Bouffier. The place where one of Moffet brothers rolled few years back.

McCormack: It was the last corner off SS2. Just carrying too much speed.
Verscheueren: Safe game plan. Second car on road. First 2 stages were very slippery
Basso: Engine cut off twice. Changed some parts. Sent out again. Engine temperature high
Greer: Stripping the car down, possibly clutch problem
Ingram: Surprised how slippery it is. Lot of dragged out gravel. Leading class, car perfect.

With Abbring it was some timing glitch.

That might be a mistake. Sure, he might win time the one time he would otherwise on the limiter for 10 seconds, but everywhere else he will lose acceleration.

The first loop of 5 stages went well with 2 best times and a great battle with the guys. We were leading Ypres Rally by 2.9s when we took the start of SS6. In this corner, I brake a bit too late and it was a lot of gravel there so we went off. I hope we can start again tomorrow morning.

excuse my ignorance, but when Loeb does a regional rally, he ends up winning by a big margin, in similar category. However Neuville didn't seem to outpace the rest of the field that much before his off? Really good level in belgium champioship?
