Chaps, I am not sure if a thread on this year’s Tour De Course already exists, but I did a lot of searching, both using the search facilities and manually (went up to page 10 on the WRC section) and did not find one, so I decided to start such thread. Nevertheless, if I was too keen and have missed it, I would be happy to re-post in the correct place and for this thread to be deleted.

So here is what I wanted to start with - I am thinking about visiting one of the European rounds of the WRC and as the nearest is Tour De Course, I am considering visiting this one in order to grab some snapshots of the interesting technical details on the cars. If I go, I am intending to be there before the rally starts, say arrive Wednesday morning and maybe stay until Friday afternoon – does this sound sensible for what I would like to do, i.e. see the cars in the service park in Bastia Airport and take my snapshots? Any help is welcome.

To your question, I dont think this is the best race for your idea. Everything is mainly because of schedule of the rally. On Thursday morning they are doing shakedown and just after shake, each cars are put to trucks or on trailer and transported to Ajaccio (other side of island). They will be there in parc ferme (with short break of ceremonial start). On Friday morning they starts and return to Bastia service on Friday evening.

So for you only chance to see the cars with more details is Wednesday... I think there are much better events for your "job"...

Thanks Pluto, I see, so technically if I decide to go I can fly back on Thursday afternoon, as there will be nothing to see there on Friday morning. So the question now is if Wednesday and Thursday morning is enough for what I want to do. It might be if the cars are accessible on Wednesday.
The reason I quite like Corsica is that the cars will be in full on “race” trim, while during my next opportunity Portugal, they will be in gravel spec, though as I don’t know how much of the aero configuration changes between these two specs, it might not matter at all if I choose a gravel or tarmac rally.

This raise a question too, how come you are so interested in seeing cars in detail, yet not interested in seeing them driven in anger?

Service park is not always the best place to have a closer look on the cars. With some extra caution - and luck - you might get a closer look as the cars queue for stage time control (shakedown might be the best for this). Also ceremonial start, I don't know how it is in Corsica, but if you go "behind" the settings, the cars must queue for the start ramp and you might get a good, closer look. Then again, of course, at service park, you get a better overview if some cars are on jacks without wheels and so on.

NickRally

Thanks Hartusvuori, it is simply because I am way more interested in the technical details than watching the cars drive round small portion of the course (I still watch the TV coverage). In my life, I have watched plenty of cars rallying and racing (I attended my first rally way back at 1984) and also can’t devote more than one or two days to this activity.
Nevertheless, you correctly pointed out that at service park, the cars are up in the air or in bits so I can see a lot of detail, which is why I will be heading there if I go to a rally this year.

Isn't the view rather limited at the service park - not close and nearly only rear view?

Simmi
7th March 2017, 09:55
I guess the earlier you arrive at service park there is also a chance the cars are covered up? Or no rear bumper - dummy wheels/tyres etc. Seems a long way to travel for that.

Best times I've found to get the cars are regroups/holding areas, and/or on the way into stages:

It´s much more easier to see details of gravel-spec car.
-higher from ground
-suspension parts more visible
-dampers visible
-smaller brakes, easier to see things behind those disc

Catalonia could be best rally to see details, that service where they change setup from tarmac to gravel (or vice verso)
they take so much things away from cars...

Am I the only one who's really bothered by the fact that for the second year running it's called the Che Guevara energy drink Tour de Corse? I get that rallies need title sponsors but good lord. Why not Josef Stalin Cola or Adolf Hitler fruit juice?

How do these people, who normally scrupulously avoid any semblance of controversy, have the audacity to name one of the rallies after a murderous communist revolutionary?

It's certainly not ideal... Having sponsors like these can't help any of the other rallies or the WRC to attract more premium brands. Yeah, money is money and this energy drink company has put some up in the absence of others, so we should appreciate that (it'd be interesting to know how much they pay), but maybe WRC Promoter should get more involved in linking up event organisers with corporate sponsors? I suppose that's easier said than done, particularly given how amazing we know RB/'WRC Promoter' have been at promoting the sport... FOM certainly play that role in F1 though, I imagine Dorna do too for MotoGP looking at who sponsors their races.

The past Raly of Mexico had many problems to get sponsor after VW leave. I would not mind if it was called Tequila Pancho Villa Rally Mexico next year

I recall reading somewhere that Corsica was planned for launching the third. Would have been nice to see Lappi enter the stage already, but Portugal isn't too far away.

No, No, No old cars. Banning evo9 is best thing in many years.

Support events (like Vetomies in Finland) are OK and enough.

WRC events should be for FIA car only. (I count R-GT as FIA car)
No need for old mitsu or civic, there are more than enough rallies for those.

And what if you are a driver, with an older car and want to compete on the same roads as the WRC drivers? Should you not be allowed to do that? Shouldn't rallying be about anyone being able to rally, not just the ones that can afford the top cars?

On that note, you might find some of the older cars drivers have far more talent and are also more spectacular to watch than a gentleman driver in a WRC car (except for obviously the crash factor with the gentleman drivers).

There is also the fact that it's bloody expensive to run a WRC event, so often the organisers need to have other people competing to help pay for the cost...

Don't be so selfish, just because you don't want to see some cars. You can always close your eyes or leave...

Couldn't disagree with you more there - maybe to a point, but banning cars like last generation version of the Evo or Impreza, or the older generation of R3 and R2 cars just seems counterproductive. So what if they're not going to win a class, they still give someone a chance to go out and rally and add a bit of variety for the roadside spectators.

Evo IX isn`t a historic yet. I hope to see more protos. Yes, it is great to watch those homologated cars with fast drivers but the ingenuity, different solutions and fast driving from "home-made" cars is interesting. Even if they go slow, they are more fun to watch than WRC/ R5 cars going slow.

finally they understood something! next step would be if they would understand that adding chicanes and hairpins to make stages slower is a stupid idea!

You mean the 4 extra tyres and shakedown? Still tyre saving on shakedown, nothing has changed right?

So, what's the reason for saving the tyres on shakedown? They can drive few stages using shakedown tyres, so thay have 7x4 permitted changes for less remainin stages? If so, then nothing is solved yet. As noted, they should simply not allow shakedown tyres to be used in proper stages.

Ogier on SD: “I was really happy during our pre-event test and now in shakedown. The feeling in the first run wasn’t fantastic but we did some small adjustments and I have to say I have a good feeling with the Fiesta on asphalt, at the moment better than on gravel,”

“The experience of the previous events is helping. In Monte-Carlo we had a little bit of dry asphalt and we’ve had more time for testing, so I feel more and more ready for each rally.

“The route is the same as last year and that was only six months ago, so it feels we’re running in a place where we have a lot of references already. Shakedown was very close and it could be similar during the rally."

TOP5 would be very good.

While I much prefer more stages to long marathon rallies such as this, I feel it's important to have at least one event like Corsica. It's a traditional part of the WRC. To be fair though, the last two Tour de Corses have passed me by really quickly and without as much excitement as every other rally.

I'm happy to have some proper long stages instead of a bunch of repeated 10km sprints.

I'm often more interested in the results of one longer stage where you can see bigger differences between drivers than repeated short runs with only a few seconds separating them.

More stages is good too of course, but not if it means making them too short and using the same roads over and over again.

Then why cant WRC use it? Even amateur video makers have access to 60fps cameras. Personally I can easily spot the difference between 30 and 60 frames, with 60 being a lot smoother.

The current 720p just doesn't cut it anymore in 2017.

Game over for Kopecký, obviously he needs either to cruise without powersteering (really nice job on such twisty roads) for whole day or to retire.

. @krismeeke's time 18:22.3 this year compared to 18:50.3 last year for an identical 29.12 km long stage.
That is 0.96 sec/km quicker

Seems that Breen and Sordo are locked together this year.

Have to say - given their relative WRC car experience - that it bodes well for Craig to already be on Dani's level. In his 11th full WRC drive.

I see Sordo now in a bit of a 'gatekeeper' type role in the WRC. A real solid driver. Not going to win rallies but a good pro and benchmark. But if you want to excel in the WRC you need to be quicker than him.

I think this year we will see that Tanak is the next guy to move consistently above the 'Sordo line'.

Sordo always has been, and always will be a journeyman...

noun, plural journeymen.
1.
a person who has served an apprenticeship at a trade or handicraft and is certified to work at it assisting or under another person.
2.
any experienced, competent but routine worker or performer.

I still feel bad for Sordo because I rooted so hard in 2006 for Manfred Stohl to overtake him for 4th in the championship. It's like I accidentally doomed his career.

kirungi okwogera
7th April 2017, 12:26
I mainly feel bad for Sordo for the half-dozen or more chances he had to win tarmac rallies if he hadn't been paired on a team with Loeb back in the day - he gave at least one first win away on team orders, and if Loeb hadn't been driving at all, Dani would've won quite a bit in those years.

Personally I can't see Ogier backing off due to Tanak and Evans. Certainly not 3 stages in/8secs off the lead.

Probably more inclined to do so at VW when they were paying him the big bucks. But unlike the last 3 years, we actually have a battle for the manufacturers championship this season.

KKS

Ogier could know about Tanak at stage end. So we should look on next stage if he back-off or not.
