29th June 2017, 22:40
So some speculations...If we look at the past years results, we see that Ogier, Neuville, Latvala and Mikkelsen have been in top 6 each year (Latvala has been fifth every year). Tänak and Paddon have also shown good results in the last two years and Tänak won WRC2 in 2014. Tänak the obvious favourite for a win, even before Sardinia. Ogier is first on the road but shouldn't matter that much in this rally, he'll be fast here. Evans a bit of a question mark, will there be a DMack advantage? Neuville will be fast, as will be Paddon, but Neuville will finish more probably without any incidents. Not probaly the best rally for Sordo.Latvala has been consistently slower than his teammates in the past. Lappi has downspoken his pace in the media, but he might surprise us. Hänninen probably won't be as impressive as in Sardinia.Mikkelsen has been fast here, but it's hard to say if he has made the car fit his style during the testing or not. All in all it's hard to expect anything from the whole Citroen team. Even Lefebvre made a stage win last year, but also crashed. Østberg wasn't up on the pace last year, not expecting much from him. And Suninen's main objective is probably Rally Finland so he's just using Poland to adapt to the car and find the setup, so I hope he just stays on the road and gets race mileage.WRC2 will be again too easy for Tidemand?Whoever wins this rally, will win the championship.

I think that Mikkelsen it's not a panacea for Citroen. Only reason why Mikkelsen slow now - he know that if he try to push, he end into same situation as Meeke. But Meeke in same time can lead rally.
And Sunninen it's great comparison that if car is OK - you be fast from the box.

He is really doing well in R5. I remember last years Andolfi was battling against him with 2wd and sometimes Fabio was even faster with rc4 while veiby was in rc3.
Now Andolfi is nowhere near the leaders pace and Veiby is leading.

Agree he has done very well. Mostly impressed by the fact that he is able to drive at less than flat-out speed when needed.

So far in Poland all Toyotas are (were for Lappi) doing very well considering their respective road positions. Maybe larger aero grip than other cars is a factor when mechanical grip is low.

I think it is unfair to the driver crews(drivers/ co-drivers) to have to drive flat out with the spectators positioned in unsafe places. Especially after Paddon's accident at Monte Carlo - people were standing in silly places the next day as well.
If the drivers make it safely to the end of the leg they might consider what can be done. (e.g driver meeting like in Portugal '86 or Sweden 2016?) or ask the organisers to get some loud sirens on the zero car to frighten people back before the cars arrive. Don't want a repeat of some car vs spectator rally accidents that have happened in recent years.

Same spot - https://twitter.com/EpicRallyTribe/status/880678508338569216

Nothing has changed... I was there in 2014, when jump was in reverse direction. Spectator zone was behind road sign, marshals followed no to allow cross the plastic fence but they were absolutely irrelevant about fans who were standing 20m further in top of the jump. (I was one of them, yes. Unforgettable feelings when cars flew away in distance of hand. But very uncomfortable and anxious in same time... I get what I wanted then but to to do it once more - never ever again, believe me). Waiting for safety cars I was camouflaging in ditches predicting that fans will be thrown out of there - it didn't happen, the car doesn't even stop.
I still can't understand where is problem for rally organizers to spot places like this and make it safe...

Having just watched JMLs in-car of SS2 it's obvious that due to the landscape of this rally i.e. relatively flat, there are no ditches to catch cars, or banks for spectators to stand on. Given that, the potential for a fatal accident seems quite high; although, I'm not sure the drivers would even notice the poor positioning of the spectators for the majority of the stage.

JML is like new born with Toyota, Lappi looking really good and now Suninen also super impressive! And we still have Rovanperä to come! Could we maybe get our crown back from the frenchmen? Atleast it's looking super bright!

and that is what years of the French kicking finnish people in the head looks like...

If anything this lottery with conditions shows that we should not make judgements based on this leg.
Sunninen morning: 8-11 place, now stage win
Mikkelsen morning: 11-13 place, now 4th

For first guys it's around 30-40 seconds slower than in the first pass. Nuff said

Lappi is out for today? Looked like minor suspension damage but he's not on the start order for the second half of today

No rule which would allow restart in mid-day service exists.
