Hi all. Sorry I havent been around for a while.

So with the 2017 season heading our way the first team released their new car today. Sauber unveiled their challenger. It looks a hybrid to me, but different livery and interesting to see the similarity between 2016 & 2017. Whether this will change after testing.

For those who cant see the BBC page.

Nice, although I think chrome would look better than the gold and be a better symbol of their 25th anniversary. Nice improvement though!
A lot of McSpeculation about the McLaren livery. These are making the rounds:

I like that last picture of the McLaren - hope that is the livery they go with. Not sure about the Sauber though, it reminds me of the Rothmans Williams Renault!

Glad to see Renault getting some more black into its livery. Looks menacing rather than bananna like.

They showed that you don't need that proboscis to win, now they'll show you don't need the fin either.
Probably due to their monster engine :)

That Merc looks beautiful and super fast. Lets hope it is a good as it seems. Mercedes can then give a middle finger to RBR and Bernie for trying to force new rules through since the beginning of the hybrid era then as soon as it was obvious RBR wasn't going dominate anymore. I think it would be a very bad thing for the F1 political climate should RBR get back to regular winning this year. They don't deserve it and need to be put in their place.

They are a cancer of F1 and I honestly wish they would leave the sport.

Hopefully Mercedes, McLaren, Williams and Ferrari can produce something special. The Force India looks sleek as well. I hope they can put it up to the big boys.

Ferrari have some pictures of the SF70H up now: http://sf70h.ferrari.com/en/ They have a big old shark fin, with a funny little skinny wing on the back end of it.

Too much talk about color and not enough about details--you all sound like a bunch of girls.

I find the McLaren radiator covers radically different--can see the ground (or is that an optical illusion?). Also, they are the only team (so far) to go with scalloped edges dropping from the nose (the Mercedes' are a bit further back, and the Renault's dropped edge is straight). FI opted for a more angled, stepped nose (where the suspension attaches) than the others and, as usual, their nose design is wildly different from the others.

What else design-wise, am I not seeing? What do you notice that I need to pay attention to as a fan?

Mark
24th February 2017, 11:34
McLaren often debut their cars in orange then change it for the season. Looks like they are going to stick with orange this year, which is nice, although not orange enough for my liking.

Koz
24th February 2017, 11:47
That's not ground, just white paint.

It has the same kind of gills on the rear wing as on the nose. Is it stepped? I can't tell.

Sidepods and intake seem smaller than some of the other cars.

Oh, and if it's not pretty how can you expect it to be fast? :p

They are remarkably similar although from the front the black vs orange nose is a big difference.

steveaki13
24th February 2017, 17:47
Mclaren seems to have a very cluttered area around the barge boards and side pods.

I am amazed how shallow alot of the noses seem to be. Whether its due to shorter drivers not needing leg room or what, but they look deceptively tricky to hold legs :D

Ferrari's sidepods are very unusual. Will make clearing any debris out of the tricky.

Mercedes dont seem to have gone for a shark fin yet. I imagine things like this may change before the season.

Yes! At some point about 15-20 yrs ago, numbers on some cars became so small they might as well not bother with all.

What do you folks think about the policy of letting drivers keep a number for their career? I preferred it when the champ took the 1 and the teams were ranked in order.

Newey told Ted the fins stabilise the car in the corners and in a sidewind, like a weathervane effect. Nothing to do with getting better flow to the rear wing.

It took all of half a day, Mercedes ran a fin in the afternoon.

It was interesting hearing Adrian Newey talking about it on Sky last night, he described it as fairly crude device to help rear stability under braking and corner entry, akin to the tail fin of an aircraft, or the big fin behind the centre of gravity on a weather vane.
He also said the "nostril" on the front of the Red Bull is an effort to regain some of the benefit of a high nose while complying with the low-nose rules, and it complies with the rules in the same way the Force India nose holes did last year.

For the most part, some great looking cars this year. The wider rubber is a plus as well. Even the Force India bump can be overlooked if they remain quick.

I'm not at all a fan of the shark fins on any of the cars. Just funky if you ask me. But we will see who keeps them and who junks them... fast isn't always pretty.

The detail on that Mclaren front wing is amazing. At least Fred will know that the slow car looks fast!

7th March 2017, 07:31
Really looking forward to the knew season start in just over two weeks time. The winter breaks don't seem as long and agonising as they used to be with the longer seasons continuing further on into the year.

The new cars look really fast. This week in particular is going to be very interesting to see what speeds they reach but I'd suspect there could be 2-3 seconds drop in lap time at least. Mercedes is bringing an entirely new aerodynamic package to the test.

At the moment, it looks as though Mercedes are still the team to beat. Hard to say about Ferrari where they are, they look fast but they looked fast last year as well. As for RBR, not much showing yet but they never top the times in preseason anyway. I doubt Renaults 0.3 seconds over the winter will be enough to close the gap to Mercedes overall but I'd suspect Mercedes, RBR and Ferrari will all be vying for race wins throughout the year based on what we've seen so far. Probably, when the gauntlet is laid down in Oz qualifying, it'll be between Mercedes and Ferrari but RBR close behind. But, much the same as last year, I'd suspect Ferrari will tailor off as the season progresses.

It should stand out from the crowd on the grid , if that was the point , and I'd guess it was .
Pink helmets are to come as well , but I think the tutus on the driver suits are too much .

I love the new Force India Livery. If anything, it will ensure its place in the pantheon of memorable and striking liveries.
Probably looks fantastic under the lights too.

I think FI livery is genius. It's the only one I've paid any attention to anyway.

Hate Red Bull but loved last years look, glad they kept it.

Force India looks really good, when bold differentiation might make the difference exposure-wise fair play.

Tho I slightly miss the inevitable homophobic/misogynist tirade that would usually follow such a story on this forum.
But of course "those" users did their job well and scared off most casual users and now they too have fucked off in their turn. to presumably excrete their effluvia in Youtube comments and MRA forums.
Good job guys! We`ll miss you forever.
