I wonder how much is mind games. Has Dakar ever been won with a forward engine 2wd vehicle?

Been trying to see where the engine is mounted from all the pics,
Whatever the configuration, knowing Glynn Hall he does everything for a reason and I have no doubt it will be very competitive.
At least it still looks like a Hilux, unlike some present cars (Buggies)

From the article: The engine and transmission are relocated between the axles.
Since it's big V8 I don't think it can be placed in front behind the front axle but maybe I am wrong.

Probably not overly difficult to move the v8 engine in the spaceframe Hilux. Hopefully Dakar does not have a mud bath day, like this year.
The Toyota V8 engine is used in the NZV8 Toyota Camry space frame 2wd rear drive touring cars. The engine is well back with a TTI sequential gearbox coupled to it.

http://www.diariomotor.com/competicion/2016/09/12/se-filtran-las-primeras-imagenes-del-peugeot-3008-dkr-para-el-dakar/
I think Peugeot will continue to have it as a 2008, but since it's a silhouette car, it wouldn't be hard to rebrand it to a 3008.
On a different note, a couple of weeks ago there was an interview with Jean-Claude Vaucard on rallye-sport.fr: http://www.rallye-sport.fr/jean-claude-vaucard-legende-sport-auto/
He said that Peugeot hired him again after the 2015 Dakar. He was there for a month, and gave them a list of what to change on the car. They did 80% of that for 2016 and they won; the rest is supposed to come this year. After all, not too surprising given the fact he had a lot to do with the 205 T16, Xsara Kit Car, Xsara WRC, C4 WRC and VW Race Touareg 2...
Edit: looks like I was wrong, it will be 3008 this year.

So looks like Peugeot is the team to beat in 2017!!
However we must bear in mind that for them they are down 1mm on the air restrictor from last dakar.
Mini will have the same if that is what they are going to race in for 2017.
Toyota will go 1mm up from what I gather.
It is left to be seen what the organizers have in mind with the rout. i.e. will it favour 4WD or 2WD in comparison with last year...??
Any thoughts?

Looking at budget and driver lineup Peugeot has to be the favorites,
I am unashamedly biased towards Toyota, i know the team and the drivers and really hope the direction they have taken is a winning one, Giniel de Villiers and Nasser are proven race winners,a dark horse will be Leeroy Poulter, he is crazy fast and talented, when it all comes together he will raise a lot of eyebrows.
I havnt seen what a possible Mini lineup will be, all the big names are either in Pug or Toyota.
The route is a mystery....
Oppositelock
14th September 2016, 08:11
The biggest - and decisive - question will be the route. If still the major parts are at high altitude, nothing will beat a turbodiesel. In theory offroad would be better for the buggys (Peugeot, Toyota). But in 2016 the Peugeots - especially Loeb - were faster than the Minis even on WRC like roads (as long as they were really pushing).
To sum it up: In 2017 my money will be on Loeb.
MitFan
14th September 2016, 13:14
Diesel or Petrol would matter I guess when it comes to altitude but Grant is right when it comes to whether it is 2WD or 4WD might not really matter with today's regulations. In fact all indications are the 2WD buggies may have a all round advantage
If am not mistaken the Petrols have been granted the additional 1mm for the air restrictor to address the altitude disadvantage. They have a minimum weight advantage too this time around.
If I remember right, the Petrols air restrictor was progressively brought down to 31mm a decade ago. The diesels have remained constant at 38mm. As such I too have a gut feeling that this might be the year of the Toyotas with the Diesels and Petrols both standing at 38mm. When it comes to budget there is no regulation yet right?

Wont be surprised if we see a different body. Looks like a cut and paste job from the 4WD frame to the new one. Dont see any spare wheels either. Best place maybe in the center like the peugeot buggies for best weight distribution.
MitFan
16th September 2016, 15:08
Just saw this on Toyota web site:
The Toyota Hilux Evo has a target weight that is nearly 600 kilograms lighter than the current race vehicle, and even though attaining that target is nearly impossible, the new vehicle will certainly have a significantly better power-to-weight ratio.
Hope they can capitalize on the minimum weight advantage to the max before the Dakar!
Grant_RSA
17th September 2016, 16:02
From what i understand that is what the car will look like.
Different angles make the car look very different,
Spare wheels have been behind the front doors on the Hilux for the last 2 Dakar's , i suspect they are still there.
Unfortunately i no longer get anywhere near the workshop to go and take a closer look..

There are many ways of achieving a good balance I guess. Yes need to see more angles of the vehicle. Looking forward to see it in action.

FROM AUTOSPORT
Stephane Peterhansel took his first stage win of the 2017 Dakar Rally, while Peugeot team-mate Sebastian Loeb continued to lead overall as main challenger Nasser Al-Attiyah hit trouble.
Al-Attiyah headed the pack for much of Wednesday's third stage and looked set to wrest the overall lead away from Loeb at the day's end, only for Al-Attiyah's Toyota Hilux to sustain significant damage, forcing him to stop.
After the first two days were run close to sea level, Wednesday's Argentina-based Tucuman - Jujuy test featured a major spike in altitude ahead of the rally's arrival in Bolivia.
The timed stage was split into two sections, a 240km opener and a 124km follow-up, linked by a neutralised road section where the cars climbed more than 5000m above sea level.
Loeb entered the day with a 28-second lead over Al-Attiyah, but his advantage soon disappeared, as the Qatari made up four minutes during the navigation-heavy opening kilometres.
Through the remainder of the first timed section, Al-Attiyah was instead challenged by Peterhansel, but managed to keep the Frenchman at bay, entering the neutralised zone with a two-minute advantage.
But Al-Attiyah's charge came to an end soon after he resumed timed running.
He badly damaged a wheel off-piste and ground to a halt.
He remained stationary for around an hour before resuming the stage, only to stop again shortly after.
With Al-Attiyah stranded, Peterhansel eased to stage victory, with Carlos Sainz Sr and Loeb making up a Peugeot 1-2-3.
Sainz trails Loeb by 42 seconds in the overall classification, with Peterhansel four minutes adrift.
X-Raid Mini's Mikko Hirvonen ran inside the top three for much of the stage, but eventually dropped back to fourth.
The Finn now sits best of the rest behind Peugeots in the main classification, trailing Loeb by 9m38s.
Al-Attiyah's dramas were far from the only bad news of the day for Toyota, as Nani Roma, Giniel de Villiers and privateer Erik van Loon all stopped in the second part of the stage.
Of the trio, Roma came off best, losing only a few minutes and finishing fifth, just ahead of Yazeed Al-Rajhi's X-Raid Mini and the fourth factory Peugeot of Cyril Despres.
De Villiers dropped to 35 minutes off the lead as a result of his stoppage.

A story from Dakar
In the second leg Czech biker Lukáš Kvapil found an injured Italian biker Domenico Cipollone. The Italian was unconscious. Kvapil stopped, called the rescue team, made a shadow using his jacket as a cover, managed to wake Cipollone up and gave him his water. He waited for fifty minutes for the help and assisted in the rescue effort for another two hours. Tired from the sun he rode further but after some time crashed in a hole covered by sand. He suffered contusion, face and shoulder injuries. When he was transported into the hospital he found that Domenico Cipollone is lying in the same room. Now he's waiting for transport back to CZ for surgery.

Mirek

Don't think so. Due to the rules the 2WD have no disadvantage in hard terrain. I would even say that they are better suited for hard terrain because they have a lot longer travel, much bigger wheels, tyre pressure regulation, bigger ground clearance and a lot less weight.

Stage victory but we wanted more. We gave everything, took half the delay on the first part. And then puncture at the beginning of the 2nd ...
The battle was nice, it's nice to fight for seconds. We could not do more. We were hoping it would pay

Bravo @s_peterhansel & Jean-Paul. Thanks @peugeotsport for the top job. And thanks to my @DanosElena. There was nothing to do with + # Dakar2017

So i guess tomorrow Peugeot will issue team orders and Peterhansel will slow down to let Loeb take the win right ??
That was the finish manager way back when they were strong in WRC creating paper champions that were decided by team orders or fishy cars to the competiton.
the french seem to take a different approach and let the best driver win, and that is why in a few years the french are top of serious motorsport and finish kids beg their masters for some tablescraps and they only way their drivers to actually drive is only through manager favouritism.

Peterhansel: "On the first 120 kilometers of special, it took us three minutes basically. On the second special, he was allowed to leave because he was faster, but after a few kilometers he burst. We said 'maybe it's our luck', we went ahead and we drove as fast as possible. We rode fast, concentrated ... and here we are. It's played in seconds, a few minutes. By attacking the second part, we were 2'50 'ahead of Seb. Knowing that it was a WRC track, we thought we were losing them, but his puncture gave us air. It is almost an honor to fight against Seb at the regular. It is hyper fast, on some places more than us. But it's still a rally-raid. "
Loeb: "We left super strong this morning, we recovered half the gap on the 100 km of the first part of the stage ... and in the two I crash in the first corner. I took a stone like a thousand! And then I stop, I change the wheel and Stéphane passes. After we attacked a bit in the winding, and from the moment it was dusty, in the fields, we let go. It's life, you can not do anything, it's like that. It's been two days since we had the knife between our teeth trying to grab some time. The fight had to end. The gaps are still too big now, I have already dropped in that one, we can not do much. "

Still don't think Stephane should have had his time given back - but it's happened before - and will probably happen again. For that, I can't congratulate him. But, it's the ASO, they do what they want.

I was wrong, they did´t give any team orders. Happy for that.
Maybe next year Seb!

Shame... Loeb really deserved the victory.
cant say he deserved the victory,ok he was faster, but he make the driving mistake yesterday.
but he was the only Peugeot driver that he lost plenty of time with engine/turbo problems t early stages.
For sure he was much better than last year.

I was mostly thinking about the turbo problems, yes. He was clearly faster than Peterhansel even with the navigation errors.

Dakar is not about speed.
The organisers decided to award the victory to peterhansel, no surprise there.
maybe next year.

Peter Versluis crashed into Martin Macík behind the finish (intentionally?). There was some heated argument afterwards...

The thing is that Versluis was furious that Macík didn't let him pass while Macík said he had another three trucks in front of him which he wanted to pass himself.

stupid tourist, 9000 kms like turtle and the final 2 decided to push? for what? plus the road was so narrow the guy in front had nowhere to stop even if he wanted. such dust problems happen all the time in rally-raid.
