Today we have a great new.
We have been in contact with the fast Lebaneses driver Gilbert Bannout for some weeks. We are happy to announce that he is going to take part in the 40th Rally Islas Canarias.
The runner up driver at Lebanese Rally Championship 2013 is going to do some test before the rally to decide what car will he use for the first meeting of the ERC season. As Bannout has told us, he is very excited to come to the ERC spanish rally. He really like the diversity of the stages and the environment of the island.

It would be a good bit of tarmac training for Mads..
Unfortunately for Mads practice won't improve his ability to drive fast enough on tarmac.
Sure it would be good to benchmark a WRC driver against the ERC crews, but realistically practice isn't what he needs to get faster on tarmac, I believe he needs a fundamental re-write of his approach to tarmac. He is simply not that competitive in my opinion (which is not the end of the world, he still gets to race in the WRC, which is more than I ever will do!).

PLuto
23rd February 2016, 16:07
It is very difficult to predict before the start. But actually fastest drivers in ERC - Kajto and Lucas - are also better on gravel than tarmac. If there will not be Consani on start of the event, there will be no real tarmac specialist on the start (if I am talking about ERC regulars, I am not counting locals (and their speed with new cars is also very difficult to predict).
Another advantage for Mads is, that during last three months he has done hundreds of kms of tests and did two difficult rallies, so he is in racing rhythm. On the other side, rest of the other competitors will be happy, if they will do few kilometres on the test before race...

Have to admit I was thinking the same thing? A guy with almost 100 WRC starts and years of being a works driver should not be getting beaten by anyone in the current ERC - unless maybe it's a Kopecky or Loix on home ground.

Yet we saw the example of Tanak, who is clearly faster than Mads getting thoroughly beaten at Barum in 2014... Sure he was on DMack tyres, but not a single stage win and only 7th overall, behind several S2000's while driving an R5. Sure there is always specific things that hurt an overall drive, but a WRC driver should surely be able to write good notes for an event they haven't been to before and then drive to them, so should at least perform well on some stages.

I get what you're saying but I completely disagree that Tanak is clearly faster than Mads. It seems like a couple of rallies from Ott (e.g. Poland) have just blinded people to the full picture.
If you read his stage-end comments he was having quite a few issues on that rally. Plus the calibre of the championship was also completely different just a few short years ago. The works teams have now gone.

Exactly. Or some crazy Italian tarmac specialist, like Andreucci, Basso or Rossetti, but they are not going to be there.
Kajto will not be faster than Ostberg for sure. Polish rally drivers have never been fast on Canary Islands. The stages there are completely different than Polish roads. Kubica is an exception of course, but he is a racing driver, so such stages suit him.
I expect Ostberg in the top 3.

55 in ERC field. The rest are Spanish and Canarian series competitors. Still, a pretty decent entry list, with Ostberg name being a nice addition!
Btw, like Ostberg said to Autosport, his entry is locally supported (I believe Kankkunen, Auriol and some other WRC guys also have been in Canarias paid by organizers), not an MSport official participation. He'll use a 2015 spec car, run by spanish team RMC. Probably MSport will get him the latest evolutions. Sadly there's no top french or italian tarmac specialist to give Ostberg a proper fight, but it'll be nice to see if Monzon still is damn fast in his backyard and how much Katjo can improve in Canarias roads!

So Ostberg is only here due to the honour of being an invited WRC guest and not specifically for tarmac practice...
"We met for coffee and discuss running the rally and we have been in touch ever since. Finally, we get together and have organized everything for me with a good patronage of Gran Canaria "said Ostberg.
Ostberg will be managed by the Spanish team RMC and has admitted that the rally will be a combination of fun and serious work.
"Yes, it's a little of both. Give me the opportunity to gain some practical experience on asphalt. It will also be an opportunity to have a good time in a nice holiday location , so it will be a good mix, "said the Norwegian.

What are your expectations in terms of a result?
“It’s really hard to say: there are so many unknown factors. I’m not thinking too much about that: my aim is just to enjoy the rally and build up my experience on asphalt. It’s always useful to have time in a rally car, especially as this year I have a new co-driver, so it’s great for us to have this opportunity: that’s the main thing. A big thank you to everyone who made it possible.”

I dont know why any driver bothers giving interviews nowadays, or the press bother reporting them, when people dont take any notice of what is said and usually think the opposite...

The stage action for the opening round of the FIA European Rally Championship will begin with SS2 of the Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés.
The scheduled SS1, a city stage after the ceremonial start this evening, had to be dropped due to a technical issue concerning the lighting of the 2.20-kilometre stage, with safety and competitor safety being paramount.
Instead, the rally will get underway with the 24.73-kilometre Moya 1 stage on Friday morning: competitors being immediately thrust into the longest stage of the rally as the ultimate wake-up call. Starting at 11h21 in the morning, it’s likely to have mixed weather conditions as the drivers climb to the 1700-metre mark. Many experts define this as the most crucial and technical stage of the rally.
Before then, the drivers have an autograph session and ceremonial start in the centre of Las Palmas at 20h00 tonight, close to the service park, which is expected to attract an enthusiastic audience.

For sure spectators. It's city stage and they are most likely afraid of crowd control in the darkness. I wouldn't run a city stage in complete darkness either. It's too big risk.

Almost 1.40 min + for Consani on ~25 km stage? It looks incredible....
It was corrected now. Consani 15:54.5 +20.3 to Ostberg.
Hood opened in Consani's car... shame, but his fault:) Anyway I think he can mix some times in top3. Good start for Ostberg and Kajto. Luky can loose some time due to tyre choice.

Lots of talk about 'asphalt training' for Mads. It's not his best surface but during his career he's had a massive amount of tarmac mileage - in rallies and in testing.
But I guess it sounds better to say you're getting in extra tarmac practice than the fact you're being paid to be there.

There’s still hope for the 911’s! In Spanish championship classification, Burgo (3.8 engine with ’16 restrictor) is 20s behind Monzon’s DS3 (he was only 1s before last stage). Cristian Garcia is amazingly leading spanish field in a Lancer EvoX GrN+.
On an overall combined classification, unrestricted Porsche’s (still allowed in Canarian championship) of local drivers Cruz and Martin would be fighting Luky for 2nd position.

Unless snow becomes something really relevant for the championship it's not comparable. For last couple of decades snow events were nothing but a curiosity in the calendar with very little importance in the grand scheme of things.
Anyway let's not polute another thread with the same stuff with was discussed to death elsewhere.

I dont like so much this comparison between ERC and national field. Drivers in national field has really different conditions - they are starting more than one hour later, so different weather conditions. They can use different tyres, they have no tyre limit etc. So this comparison is quite unfair.
