Think you could be right. I'm also not convinced by JMLs ability on tarmac, it certainly pales in comparison to those like Loeb, Ogier, Sordo and Panizzi.

Where's the fun in grand prix circuit-wide bone dry tarmac? Part of Ireland's charm is the need to deal with ever changing grip. Certainly sorts men from boys. If you think that's difficult try any UK night rally which inevitably have routes through farming country (even through the farmyard!)

Judging from Breen's comment he knows this stage very well:
Breen after SS3 - "You can't put it into words, that is the best bit of tarmac in the world! Just incredible feeling! This is really what Irish rally is about. We are now on the roads that we grow up on!"

Breen grew up about 250 miles from SS3, he may have grew up with a familiarity with this type of road but I really don't think he would have any great knowledge or familiarity with this individual stage, he would have needed to make notes and drive to them like the rest of the field. His performance over the stage was stunning, and was not because he was driving down his local stage.

Maybe Breen's 6th COI but:
Not all previous editions have been mechanically trouble-free
Not all previous editions have been in a ERC class 1 car
Now does anyone else want to find a reason to diminish what seems to me to be a damn fine drive or does anyone think the mud miraculously disappears from the road as he approaches.
It's a hard thing to take when ingrained preconceptions are overthrown, though I'm still waiting for a 208 to look durable!!

According to his interview at the end of SS4 he's under strict orders to get to the finish of this rally, so was being careful.
Btw, for anyone not watching they've got two cameras at the end of SS5 live now on the video stream. Personally I've been quite impressed with what they've put together, it's certainly an improvement on rally radio!

On Ingram again, at the end of SS5 he's said that he is by his own admission nowhere near the limit of the car, which is very good (the car that is). He says he just needs to get more experience in the car to be able to get more out of it.
On the coverage, I think Seb Marshall did a good job in difficult conditions. Seemingly it's his first media job, so well done to him. Good way for him to pass the time until the Hyundai R5 is ready!

Yes, we have an exiting battle in ERC3. At the moment it's young Polish driver Pieniazek who is leading in front of Ingram and Gryazin who are only 17 seconds behind him. For me personally it is great to see that private drivers, such as Pieniazek and Gryazin, can successfully fight against 3 works Opels.
P.S. Welcome back to the Rallyforum Tom! :)

Sounds an exciting accident for Simpson yesterday !! :disturb:
“I’m so disappointed to have retired, but it’s been a pleasure and privilege to drive this car on this event,” said the UK-based ŠKODA dealer.
“It was just a silly accident: the car got out of shape over some bumps and off we went. I’ve never been backwards at more than 100 miles an hour before, and that’s not something I’m massively keen to repeat! But it’s just one of those things. You live and learn.”

i d like to see this tyre at hotter rallies.Low temperature rallies always are ''forgiving'' to not so good rally tyres.
For sure there is a progress from previous versions.A bad tyre even at low temps cant win stages repeatedly even with a better driver(Evans).

Kajto close second place, DMack’s evolution on tarmac and the speed of Tarabus and McCormack were also impressive.

Really enjoyed the event. Zoned in on some jumps and saw some nice action. A bit of prior planning goes a long way. Otherwise you just end up stuck at uninspiring junctions. As was discussed earlier - what the top WRC guys would do on these stages would be absolutely mindblowing.
That said I really don't think pushing for WRC inclusion is the right road to go down. The organisers are dreaming if they think they can achieve the same size of entry list under WRC regs. With the new cars they'd have to install even more chicanes to keep the speeds manageable.
Photos up tomorrow or Tuesday hopefully.

I don't think that their cover was too far off tbf, allowing for the fact that they would always look to promote the BRC and homegrown talent. Breen was a cut above but Evans was quick too and but for his problems on Friday you have to wonder how he might of done (from what I can tell he had 6 stage wins). Likewise Cronin is obviously quick on tarmac, has knowledge of the roads and you have to say was in the mix. OTOH Kajto is a fast driver but didn't have the local knowledge/experience of Irish tarmac like the others, in fact I suspect he surprised a lot of people with how close to Breen he was.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Katjo, he put in a very fine performance, but he did have some knowledge of the Saturday stages from last year, Cronin had never done them and hadn't been on the 1st day stages for a several years. Katjo may have surprised people last year, I know I was very impressed with his speed, but anyone paying attention last year would have known to expect him to be right up there this year.

Quick question for those forum members who attended the event as spectators. How as the experience for you? Obviously on this side of the Irish sea its a bit of a difficult time for both sides of the fence.
Do you mean in terms of access, marshalling, speccy pens etc?

Watching the tv pictures I've never seen fans in Ireland kept so far back from the roads...
Greater safety of course but seems to lack the atmosphere of old.
Maybe the very poor weather had an effect this year though... some horrible conditions for 'Spring time'.

It was fine if you kept away from the main spectator areas, which never really interest me any way. We could walk down the road and pic our own spot on every stage. We got 3 stages on Friday and 4 on Saturday. It was an incredible rally!

Yes. Just wondered what the atmosphere was like as the rallies I've attended this year in the UK haven't been much fun. Marshalling (and I'm not one who likes listening to the sound of my own voice) its been a bit tense and when watching its been like playing hide and seek whilst being public enemy number one.
Saw quite a lot of red and white tape on tv and obviously square junctions mean viewing is normally from back up the slip road behind the line of travel. Jumps are of course verboten...
Like Nelly said there was still scope to walk into the stages - providing you didn't get there last-minute. I thought around the spectator areas there was a lot of unnecessary taping and I think that's only going to get worse by the sounds of new guidelines coming from the MSA. There was absolutely nothing to see at some of those junctions. So it will definitely be a case of people trying harder to steer clear of spectator areas. And like you say there is a feeling of playing hide and seek at times. Or being told to move and then moving back. A lot still depends on the mentality of the marshal too.

Yeah what a nice rally with very friendly people, organization, spectators, marshalls everywhere. I was really surprised not only from the stages & landscape. Will come back for sure!

Usual superb high quality video highlights from Flyin Finn Motorsport, a lot of action and offs featured, didn't realise Ahlin's and Blomberg's was so bad:

He was kind of a strange one to follow - very slow on every section we saw him on, then went full retard over Hamilton's Folly and duly retired on the spot.
Honestly looked as if he had it as a flat crest.

Ha, that's the part I liked the best as well... great action the cars coming over a bumpy crest landing onto mud and water and a 90 left immediately ahead !
Great video showing some impressive driving throughout the field.

Rather challenging when it came to weather, especially as this was only my 2nd go with a DSLR, but pretty happy with some of them. Great event and highly recommend it!
