Sure this thread has been done before but anyway...

I can't believe some people will actually buy some cars let alone drive them around in public!!!

My first vote goes to the fiat multipla... completely hideous. If you have one... SHAME on you!

Has to be the Ssangyong Rodius. It is so big and ugly.

I wonder how many have been sold?

A couple of days ago I read about Saab's 60th anniversary since they make cars. And I saw this official image of the protoype of their first car: the 1947 Saab 92. Damn this thing is ugly:

How about the Mazda 9? It's so bad that it looks like a Commodore. It's a bulbous mess that looks out of place in the showrooms, and out on the streets it's big, farty and takes up too much space.

What were the designers thinking. And worse, it cost about 460 million quid to develop.

That's the point with a Multipla. From what most people who own one say it's a great family vehicle.

And from what you can see of the interior it looks to be a good place to be as well as being spacious.

To me if you went out and had 4 or 5 kids and expected to look fashionable and attractive to young members of the opposite sex then maybe safe sex was the best option for you. Caroline pointed out a Zafira VXR in a carpark the other day. What a joke

They do come in handy especially when you go on holiday the way we do in South Africa with the kids and friends, surfboards, golf clubs etc etc

I am looking at buying a new Toyota Verso in February 2007. Thats not such an ugly car ;)

I guess that I am old fashioned these days, because I don't really like that many cars which are currently in production. It is possible to plot some future trends by extrapolating certain design features, to try and work out where things are going to go.

For example, consider the height of front and rear lights. Rear lights started getting high up with the Ford Focus, now they are getting silly, I predict that soon they are going to be on stalks ABOVE the line of the roof!

Next what about cars getting higher? I totally deplore such a trend, because anyone who knows anything at all about handling knows that the C of G of the car needs to be as low as practically possible to make the thing handle nicely. People carriers, 4x4s and Ford Fusions are particularly bad offenders.

Next we can see that the base of the windscreen is getting further forward, this is all fine and dandy for pedestrians who might get run over by your car, but it just leads to cars which are damn ugly.

I guess that liking something like a Bristol 404, or an E type Jaguar or an Alvis TD21 marks me as something of an eccentric, but I hate things like the Lotus Esperit (all of them) just because they look like a squashed square box, (and you can put most of the '80s Ferraris in there too, whatever happened to the curve fest which was the 275?)

Ugliest?

How about the Nissan Primera
Triumph TR7
Ssanyoong Rhodius
Renault Vel Satis
Porsche Cayenne
Peugeout 806
Honda Fuya-jo (cheating a little, because it's a concept car, but worthy for extreme ugliness)

I could go on all afternoon

The Multipla is without a doubt a fugly car, it looks like the top and bottom halves were designed by teams who were never allowed to meet.

The new Beetle is also particularly vile, as is the Micra C+C.

Also any of the Bangle BMWs with their stupid parrot-faced headlamps.

But the winner for me is the true champion of awful cars for just so many reasons. Ladies and gentlemen, the Porsche Cayenne.

Hmm, what part of not that bad do you mean exactly? The main problem with the Cayenne is that it is trying hard to be something it isnt.

It is a 4x4 trying hard to be a sports car, and that is a circle that no one in the world is going to square. It is trying desperately hard to look like a 996, but stretched in all the wrong places.

Porsche is all about the histrory of Porsche, when you buy one, that is what you are buying into, a lineage going right back to the 356, and the sports racers of the '50s, cars which were designed around the idea of a lightweight body and chassis which would make up for the fact that the engine wasn't that powerful, yet perform better than the sum of the humble VW based parts. The Cayenne p***es all over that idea.

If you don't care about all that, then you might as well go and by a Skyline GTR and save a wad of cash. It is a car designed by the marketing department, and approved by a board who smell a profit. If they had left it with a VW or an Audi badge, then everyone would have loved it for what it is, rather than what it is not.

LotusElise
12th December 2006, 23:34
Urgh, forgot the Cayenne. A mess if you ask me!
Porsche have always adhered to the "if it isn't broke, don't try to fix it" school of design and this monstrosity proves why they were wise to stick with that policy for that long.

Rather. There has been a lot of brand pimping lately. Brands like Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini have a lot of credibility and respect in the automotive world. This means you can charge more for a Porsche 4x4 than you can for a VW one. Which means that even though it goes totally against the Porsche brand values they built the Cayenne purely to squeeze more money out of customers by selling them a more prestigious badge.

There seems to be a push in the automotive world to squeeze more and more money from people with rather lame things like the Ferrari Fxx project where rich, fat idiots get to pretend they're part of a team developing a car when they probably have very little driving skill at all. I suspect it'll be more like "This Sparco Evo 2 is too small for my fatt ass. Please get me a Sparco Evo 3 please" than anything. Then there was the news of Ferrari releasing a new Dino. If this is actually true it shows a total lack of respect for Enzo and the Dino and shows more of a desire to pimp the brand out and make money than anything else. There is talk of them actually releasing the car under the Dino badge which is slightly more respectable but still stinks of brand pimping and trying to make money while being as unoriginal as ever.

I agree with just buying a Skyline if you think the Cayenne is alright. Perhaps you could stick a Ferrari or Porsche badge on there if you want to own one of those cars so much :)

People carriers, 4x4s and Ford Fusions are particularly bad offenders.

I've got no big problems with the Ford Fusion, Renault Modus and all the other "dwarves on stilts" cars because they're aimed at an older market or those with mobility problems who would find getting in and out of a lower car a pain - literally. The massive body roll on corners isn't likely to be a factor at the speeds they tend to drive.

But it's inexcusable when marques like BMW produce something as unashamedly dreadful as the X3, or when Porsche produced the abomination which is the Cayenne.

Whatever next, a Ferrari off-roader?

In ten year's time, when my premium bonds cough up more than their usual three figure wins, may I remind you of that when you want a go in my Cayenne? :p :

Yes, I know it's not everybody's favourite, and it's owned by moronic rich folk who can't drive very well anyway, but I love the thing. I'd get some nice semi off road tyres fitted, blather it in muck and wait for the mice to chew up the poncey electrics ...... then refuse to let anyone else play in it off road :D

Ugly cars are world wide, but I think some of you are confused on truly ugly cars. The Cayenne isn't ugly, it just isn't a Porsche. It has made a lot of money and people keep buying them, so I guess I understand why Porsche made them, but they are just another SUV which as a rule all suck.

No, That Fiat is hideous. How about other great classics such as the AMC Pacer?? The Pontiac Aztek?? The early editions of Subaru when they first came to North America?

Cars today are as a rule better looking than in the past; and while styling of a car is a personal thing, some cars are just universially ugly and people who green light such abortions on wheels should be shot!!!

I think it's universally accepted that the Italians have come up with some of the most stylish objects whether it be cars, clothes or wimmen :) However, even they can come a cropper (that's aussie slang for make a mistake for our non-aussie friends).

Case in point, the 1971 Maserati Boomerang. Warning your eyes may need medical attention after viewing this link, particularly once you see the dash design!

I'm totally biased though. I learnt to drive in one of these and it was my first car. I've got Italian oil flowing through my veins. Mainly because my 131 used to leak a tonne of oil and I'm sure it's worked it's way into my circulatory system.

That car has some potential though. It's a nice clean design. Was the Abarth a variation of that model?

Daniel
28th December 2006, 02:20
Yes it was :) But very different. Mirafiori (What I owned) and the imaginatively named Supermirafiori (2L TC version) both had solid rear axles and the Abarth version had a far better independant rear suspension and a few other goodies :) My 131 was a sweet car. My dad had put Bilstein shocks on it when it was younger so it handled even better than it did new. Btw there is a 131 Abarth in Perth owned by a guy called Frank Ceccelle or is it Cechelle or something like that? He has a showroom in East Perth or thereabouts and has numerous Ferrari's, Fiat's, Alfa's (He has a wrecked GTA I think) and a few Lancia's.

Oh and yes the 037 is beautiful. Nearly soiled myself when I saw one for the first time. That's car pornography that is :)

East perth of North Perth? There was a showroom there that even had a Evo Lancia Integrale at one point. Beautiful red one. I used to wonder what they did to raise cash, because there was never anyone working there that I could see and I'd walk past everyday to get my car from a nearby carpark.

I figured they were just part of the mafia, like all italians are*.

*Just jokes my italian friends!

North Perth. Don't know what I was smoking when I posted that......

I don't think he has any "connections". He just loves Italian cars. I'm guessing he's got millions in the bank and gets a kick out of keeping old Italian cars on the road. They have a workshop out the back which is usually busy and he sells spare parts and such but I suspect he operates at a loss and just does it for the love of it. Nice guy  If you ever do fall in love with an Italian car you'll get to know him for sure.

My grandfather had a 131 and so did my father (of course they were SEATS) and I have fond memories of those cars. You can still see some around here and the noise they make is so distinctive from modern cars that you know there's one near just by listening.

When I walked to work this morning I saw one car parked on the side of the road. It reminded me of how ugly a car can be.

And the car is Volvo XC90. It looks a bit like elephant. An ugly one.

the Mazda logo has just been photoshoped into the grill, Rollo, that has to be a commodore, Ford wouldn't stoop to copy the commodore that looks like a ba Falcon & a Mitsubishi 380 CLONE.

Volvo rigs are some of the best on the road for streamlining. Don't be fooled by the artist concept, the real thing on North American roads will be a good looking truck. The price of having an ugly rig is disaster. There is a reason Peterbilt and Kenworth still build their big nosed conventionals, because old time traditional truckers are fussy when they dish out 150000 G's for a truck and they want what they want. Volvo's are more for fleet owners and a lot of younger truckers who are into the sleek styling. If something like that artist concept hit the road, I can guarntee no one would want it....but the exagerrated features say to me that that is a concept...and we all know what happens to concepts.
