Supplementary regulations for Ypres Rally now finally released:
http://www.ypresrally.com/sites/ypresrally.com/files/documents/suppl_regs_ypres_2015_final_subject_to_fia_visa.pd f

17 stages over 253 kilometres. That's about 40 kilometres less than previous years.

This time it seems Skoda is well prepared for customer-programme. In March there were 15 bodyshells ready. I know bodyshell is not complete car, but anyway the speed of production would be fast. I think somebody said Skoda plans to produce 60 cars during next 12 months.

Mirek

60 is definitely very much exaggerated. 20-30 is realistic in my opinion.

Simpson already sold his Fabia S2000 for a Fabia R5 for competing in Ypres. I don't know of others who would compete with a Fabia R5 in Ypres, no factory driver maybe one of the Czech's? It's a pity that Loix probably won't have his Fabia R5 for the Wallonie.

I think that on the first weekend of May, Baumschlager (Wechselland Rallye), Loix (Rallye de Wallonie) and Scandola (Rally Adriatico) will compete with the new Fabia

Normally the shakedown would have been moved due to roadworks, but those were cancelled/delayed. So shakedown in the same place again, unfortunately. It's a nice shakedown but it's the same for ages...

Ahh, thanks - I discovered it by accident last year whilst on my way to the Nurburgring 24 Hours and thought I'd do the rally properly this year, so for me I'm looking forward to the atmosphere if it's anything similar to last year.

On Friday, is it possible to watch 2 stages from each loop? They all look fairly close to each other.

If you watch only some 15-20 crews (first 15 shall start every 2 minutes, after that it's every minute), I think it's possible to see 4 stages on friday. It's always interesting to choose some strategical place where you can move quickly from one stage to the other. ;)

I'm sure it will be with their blessing; their driver gets a chance to keep his hand in, during an international event, and you don't have to pay a penny? Might be that the benefit outweighs the 'cost'. Great news though.

I take it we're not expecting any Skoda R5s apart from one for Loix?

I never understood the rumour anyway, even last year was a very tight budget for team Kobus and even no opportunities for '15, only a one off at Ypres ... can you imagine ordering the latest and most expensive R5 available only for one event, cause there is no money for more outings? So there were rumours Wevers could buy one and Kobus could rent it. Or no rumours at all. Let's see, I would enjoy it if Hermen Kobus would be at Ypres.

Sorry, I'm going to ask a few newbie questions over the next month; what's the deal with tickets? I never needed one last year, but I didn't do any if the stages proper.

The price advertised on the site looks fairly expensive if it doesn't include Shakedown; what's the rough 'per stage' price?

Expensive? €40 at the moment for shakedowns and all stages: http://www.ypresrally.com/en/product/kenotek-ypresrally-regular-pre-sale-ticket-%E2%82%AC40

tommeke_B
25th May 2015, 14:08
It's not cheap indeed, last year the entry ticket costed "only" 35 euros (32 in presale). Any other ERC event that asks this amount of money? In Belgium it's quite common to have these rates for entry tickets, other "normal" BRC events go from 20 to 30 euros, even for local events in Flanders you can easily pay up to 15 euros for a ticket.

dodge33cymru
25th May 2015, 14:44
I didn't mean expensive for what you get, I mean expensive for me combined to what I'd expect to pay on a stage-by-stage basis. If shakedown is free, and I'm only going to be there on Friday, I wondered if it was cheaper than just paying for stage entry on two stages on Friday? The 'per stage' info doesn't seem to be available.

The price per stage is 10 or 12 euros I think (not sure). Anyway on many places along the stages they don't check at all in many cases (if you avoid the public areas which are in mostly not that spectacular anyway). Sure it will be cheaper to buy a ticket only on stage.

Loix in Fabia R5 now registered.

I bought the rally pass for 37€. To me it's cheap, because I compare it to Rally Finland, Rally Germany and Rally Sweden. Those are WRC, sure, but nevertheless Ypres is a weekend of high quality rallying, no matter if it's W or E in front of RC. And sure, there are cheaper events, events with no tickets at all even, but still - happy to support.

But anyways Historic rally of Ypres gets only more expensive and shorter..

And less attention, year after year people are less interested in the historic cars in Ypres. If you want to see nice historic action it's better to go to Legend Boucles, or to events where all "top-"historics are together, like Omloop van Vlaanderen. In Ypres it's a pitty that historic-ERC and national drivers are splitted (of course it's necessary but not good for spectacle and interest).

ERC topclass wise, this is a quite weak list with only 1 of the top 5 at the start, also Kajto will be in trouble if he miss Ypres plus Estonia, his ambitions to get the title won't be easy to reach then.

Also for the moment only Duquesne has registered for ERC, I expect Casier, Cherain and Princen to register also the others will sadly run after the BRC Juniors..

ERC topclass wise, this is a quite weak list with only 1 of the top 5 at the start.

This year was always going to be a write-off championship-wise, with only a single works car for the duration, but we can't deny that there have been some great individual events (albeit with poor coverage), and Ypres has potential to be another, with a lot of unknown factors this year.

I think the organisers will have to look at promoting Princen and one or two others to the top class, even if they haven't paid up. It's going to be embarrassing for them if anything happens to Loix, with the potential to have an overall winner who doesn't receive any coverage whatsoever on the broadcasts.

List has been updated this morning and is up to 79, mainly adding a few juniors including Ingram.

Griebel and Bergkvist had a great battle whole rally long. Bergkvist one with 3s advantage on Griebel (who competed there last year too). Only Vanneste, Duquesne and an Evo9 were faster than the Adams. Ingram was a bit disappointing, finished almost 2min behind the adams and couldn't match their times all day.

FIA = FIA priority (it's given for example for results in FIA championships in last year, to all works WRC crews etc.)

Nice summary on the OS:

Young world-class talents up against Belgian champions

Loix gunning for number 10

Fast Freddy has already appeared nine times on the podium’s top tread, of which four times in the Skoda colours. Loix, presently leader in the Belgian championship, played an important role in the development of the Czech R5. It goes without saying that the favourite will go straight into the attack as from the first meters. Hopefully a second Fabia R5 will appear at the start..

Kevin Abbring vs. Stéphane Lefebvre

Pieter Tsjoen, Ypres winner in 2001 and with 8 Belgian titles the most successful rally driver in the Belgian championship, is also a strong contender for a second victory in his home rally. This time around as co-driver in the DS 3 R5, teamed up with Kevin Abbring, the Hyundai driver in the World Rally Championship. Kevin Abbring still has an account to settle with Lady Luck in Ypres, seeing last year he was forced to retire with mechanical problems when he was well in the lead.

In the Rallye de Wallonie Pieter Tsjoen read the pace notes for Stéphane Lefebvre, the Junior World Champion. This time around the young Frenchman will be a rival, as Lefebvre will be at the start with an official Peugeot 208 T16, the weapon with which Abbring performed so brilliantly last year. A thrilling game of musical chairs, especially as his co-driver, Stéphane Prévot, had during the previous round of the BRC read the notes for Vincent Verschueren, who will be at the start in Ypres with his trusty DS 3 R5...

Apart from Stéphane Lefebvre, Peugeot still has a few contenders up their sleeve, with obviously in the first place Craig Breen, the present leader in the European championship, but also Kris Princen, who managed to beat Freddy Loix earlier this season in the Belgian championship and who won the Ypres classic in 2005. We are also delighted to welcome Bruno Magalhaes, who with the 208 T16 will once again have a top car with which to play up front.

Breen, Princen, Cherain, Casier...

DS not only has Abbring as a contender at the start, but definitely also Cédric Cherain, who last year drove a strong rally and was rewarded with a second place, and who following a bloodcurdling duel with Freddy Loix won the Rallye de Wallonie with his DS 3 R5. But it is not by pure chance that Vincent Verschueren became Belgian S2000 champion twice. To win in Ypres would be a great first for the DS make (logical for a new make), but also for Citroën.

The last victory claimed by Ford, a fixed value in the international rally sport, dates back to... 1994, when Patrick Snijers enjoyed his glory years. Last year, Bernd Casier following his off road on the first special stage, registered some top times that conjecture the very best for this season. Let us not forget that Bernd Casier has on numerous occasions proved to be a potential winner in Ypres. For Ypres Didier Duquesne has invested in a new Fiesta R5, while Davy Vanneste, on home ground, is also a contender for a Top 5 finish.
The R5 cars are present in full strength, but the extremely reliable Super 2000 brigade are not chanceless, just as the two Ford Fiesta RRC manned by the Irish brothers Sam and Josh Moffett. In a nutshell once again it will be a battle down to several tenths of a second in the Kenotek Ypres Rally.

They have FIA priority, but they will have to do qualifying stage also. Normally fastest man in qualifying can first make choice of starting position on friday 13h00. I guess it also counts for FIA registered drivers. Maybe Pluto can give us some answers on this topic?;)

You are right Mirek, but i guess the reason for this is that safety was very strict and people were not allowed to stand where they wanted. There is only about 4 or 5 accesses where you can reach the testbase, and everywhere there was strict control and people could only stay quite far from the road. That would be main reason that there is some filming at stage turning point.;)

They all look so close that I'm wondering if it's possible to do Langemark (until after the Porsches) > Mesen 1 > Dikkebus 2 on the Friday, or if traffic will make it impossible?

For me this looks possible. Don't take the connection roads that look obvious or you get stuck in traffic.

Also, a reminder to everyone going to see Ypres, remember that last year there was literate zero tolerance for speeding and over 1000 tickets were given out by police patrols or automatic cameras. If it says go 50, go 50, not 51.

I'm tired of Ypres event. Condroz f.e. is more beautifull to watch. Rallies with 90° turns is not for me. Madeira is a fantastic event, shame that we can't afford a ERC event there.

Mirek

What? I have been to Ypres four or five times with Tommeke and I have NEVER been in a 90° turn, I think never in a place slower than 3rd gear (mostly 5th-6th gear places). It's very spectacular event but if You are so lazy to stay in the junctions than it's your mistake to be disappointed. In the whole ERC there's no easier event to get to the stages via dozens of roads everywhere!

I have been to Condroz too and I find Ypres nicer thanks to better entry field and way nicer weather for spectating. Standing in a rain in 5°C is not really comfortable especially when half of the stages is off the schedule.

Actually You can drive up to 56 on roads where 50 is allowed. Corrections are 6kph (up to 100kph) and 6% for speeds over 100kph. Usually it's best to take the smaller roads (similar to those used for stages) where you can drive as quick as you want (speed limit is officially 90kph outside urban areas if there's no other sign) and avoid some traffic. The official maps that are sold together with the program book provide enough detail to find those roads.

I prefer Condroz above Ypres. The roads in Condroz are more difficult than the roads in Ypres, especially since a few years that Ypres has new asphalt on some sections.

In the Condroz last year it was 20°C and very sunny... Yes, there were editions that there was rain and the temperatures weren't that high, but that is in (almost) each rally I think. I like rain, so that drivers with a less powerfull car have also a chance on a very good result.

See you maybe Friday in Ypres? ;)

I figure normally it is like that, but last year I heard of a guy who got a ticket just for 1 km/h over the limit and other with 3 km/h over the limit. Normally it's good to avoid the bigger roads where the most of the traffic is as well as the most of the police and cameras are.

Yes, according to the rules, drivers with FIA priority (same like RGT priority) are part of qualify stage. Their only one disadvantage comparing to registered drivers is that they cannot fight for prize money.

A little bit OT: I got only one ticket for speeding in my life but I asked czech police here in Brno for every single detail and they told me there is 10% tolerance plus police radar has its own 3 kmh tolerance. So you get ticket for speeding 58 kmh where 50 kmh is allowed here in Brno, Czech republic. It has to be very similar in Belgium. I think that guy with just 1 kmh over the limit drove his car 60 kmh, which is really 1 kmh above tolerance (50+6+3 +1) in Belgium but he tells the story more interesting way :)

Patrick SNIJERS (PORSCHE)
[Qualifying] - "It is the first time I drive it with the restricter, we are losing so much horse power compared to the Belgium rallies. It felt quite okay."

Romain DUMAS (PORSCHE)
[Qualifying] - "It was good fun, I enjoy. Tomorrow will be a lot more difficult. The car is very large, so I use nearly all the road, so we see tomorrow, I need to learn a little bit."

Francois DELECOUR (PORSCHE)

From kevin's fb

With P1 in qualifying @ypresrally the pace and rythm came back quicker as expected! It's been a long time since my last event and going back to an R5 when you are starting to get used to a WRC car isn't easy. Still finding the right gears for each pace note. Me and Pieter are really excited to take this challenge together and the atmosphere is amazing as always!

To me it looks similar to the times i would expect from Loix with S2000. I thought the R5 would be quicker straight away. Work to do on tarmac at least. On gravel it seems fast.

Maybe.. hard to say. Fabia has not been quite as convincing on asphalt so far as gravel, but one thing that stands out for me is that Bouffier is 20s up on Freddy so far. With the same car in the first round of the Czech Championship Kopecky beat him on every stage. Ok, Kopecky knows the Czech roads better, but this is Ypres and Freddy we are comparing to.

Bouffier is over the edge. He would be very lucky if he will finish this way. His DS3 R5 is fast, but not same level as Breen´s and Lefebvre´s factory cars. So either Bouffier will slow down tomorrow or crash...or third possibility is he will use all his luck for 10 years in advance and he will win :D

No, nothing wrong at all, don't worry. I just don't like the rules that the WRC/ERC top class have, where they can choose their service times but no one else in the field can. Even worse (in my opinion) is the fact they can stop the clock if they like, take a coffee break and then go back to it.

HaCo
27th June 2015, 09:09
Abbring was way too fast, not only for Freddy, but I think also for himself, too many risk. But awesome to watch of course. :-)

Skoda is disappointment, a bit overhyped IMO, good marketing machine. Still Loix can win this one, there are 4 PSA cars in front of him which don't always last very long unfortunately. I hope one of these 4 win this rally, they all deserve it. I would prefer Princen, but it looks like he is missing some speed.

Casier and Verschueren not bad at all!

What an awesome battle between Dumas and Delecour and also in Junior cup!

I, for one, am glad the Skoda isn't romping away with it! It sounds so much worse than both the S2000 and PSA R5 cars (arguably worse even than the Fiesta R5) and I guess that's why it looks so unspectacular on passes. I can't see this car getting the same love as the previous iteration unless they can do something about that.

On the other hand, Bouffier and Abbring are doing a great job if proving how exciting R5s can be when driven on the edge.

dodge33cymru

Not in the same way, no - Breen's playing a clever game and winning it. Bouffier is winning stages and taking risks, Breen is being more conservative and making fewer mistakes (and maybe fewer punctures), and it's paying off for him. Tortoise vs hares = good rallying!

I think Loix will be stronger today and I don't know if Bouffier will be able to hold it together at the same pace as yesterday. I can see Freddy winning it from here.

WUff1
27th June 2015, 09:32
But I still don´t understand, why in Czech Republic Kopecky is smashing Jakes/Bouffier´s DS3 R5, and so much difference here in return.

On the other Hand Loix is known as clever driver. Wouldn´t be the first time he ´d win Ypres after a cautious first day.

At the moment there is not big difference between Kopecky and Loix. The car should be factory car used in April and half of May, all its spare parts are new and Loix is (nearly) same test driver as Kopecky so he knows how to do the setup. We will see, Freddy can push more without doubt.

I think Kopecký's Czech Championship car is run by Motorsport Kopecky (dad's team) but that is a virtual works team.

I agree with Liposh though, there shouldn't be much difference between Kopecky and Loix' car.

We should probably make a small allowance for this being Freddy's first event with the car.
