Since no one else started this threadI´ll do it.

Today the Rally Guide 1 is published for NORF 2015.

Too bad Lankamaa is out!

Yes. And Urria and only one stage on Sunday.

tommeke_B
19th March 2015, 16:42
On the other hand the "full" Ouninpohja is back in and on sunday Myhinpaa is a perfect powerstage! Also shakedown on Ruuhimaki seems better to me than on Laajavuori. Still a good itinerary, last year was a bit better IMO, but it can't always improve. :)

wuhuuuuuuu, finally! cant wait for august! Going for the first time with bunch of friends, should be fun. Really hoping for a great result for Estonians.

For sure NORF never can be boring or something. And I know Kai and Co have lots of work to get this Itenary so good, but still some of the past stages always are missed. Laukka, Sirkkamäki...

Normally, at least between Finns, the first reaction when new route is published, is that again the same old, same old. Per, you've had the chance to spectate at Lankamaa year in, year out. Personally I don't miss Lankamaa. I think organisers would've preferred to run few proper stages on Thursday afternoon, but thanks to FIA, it wasn't allowed.

I think this year's route is good. At least it's been quality-proofed. I would've preferred something new as like we know, there are a lot of roads in the area that could be used regarding their location.

Most notable change is of course the reversed running direction of Myhinpää stage. Also the first part, new part of Jukojärvi stage could bring something good. And of course Ouninpohjantie and Ouninpohja stage belongs together, so if one can't come with any other where to go spectate, the best gravel road in the world is available.

No service on Friday brings extra twist for the opening day. A small mistake can be extremely costly. No one would want to have misfunctioning power steering on the opening leg or anything similar.

Also Ruuhimäki makes a perfect shakedown. It's the golden calling card of Rally Finland and especially to new fans. If first impressions of WRC cars flying pass the last section leaves you cold, it's better to pack up and go since it doesn't get better. :-)

Rallyper
19th March 2015, 18:51
For sure. I´ve been at Lankamaa a couple of times and same there for me. Can live without that stage, too. And I´m not complaining. Just want more, MORE ;) You know.

Lots of people though last day and the night before. Wasn´t that nice staying on that circus "first year" they drove Myhinpää in 2009 (?). But still I´ll be there somewhere.

I´ll PM you later on, after videos been released. Have a nice coming weekend.

Not NORF but with other events there are issues related to availability of ambulance services and costs of these services.

I don't know about YouTube links like last year. Why not?

That I know that YLE Ralliradio has drove through the stages with organisers, somat least some kind recce videos will come. Those were filmed weeks ago, so it'll look a lot different compared to the actual event.

Thanks for checking out my video :)

0:42 is in Painaa, and from what i can see it's in this year's SS14/18 Horka stage.
If you look at where the stage crosses an junction close to the main road halfway through the stage, the jump is about halfway between that and the next junction right, i think it was 1.5km (or more) down from the junction right. I took a shortcut through the forest from the road right next to the stage :)

There is still a lot of cars, but the quality is rather poor. I think that it will be difficult to get much people to follow the rally. Not so easy situation for Rally Finland / AKK Motorsport anymore.

It tells also something that there is only one Finnish WRC car driver. The financial situation is difficult, but so far Rally Finland has been one of the most wanted target for the companies/sponsors.

"The big audience" is interested about the main class and if drivers like Juho Hänninen and Jarkko Nikara are not able to collect enough money to compete at all it will be very difficult for others.

Of course Lappi and Suninen are coming to the top, but we will miss you Mikko!

Nelonen, which owns rights in Finland, broadcasts Harju 1 and Myhinpää power stage. They'll also have second run of Harju on their pay channel, but no other proper forest stages apart from Myhinpää 2.

In prior years that've been the case, the official magazine Tuulasi shows official parking places and accesses. I think that issue will be out next Friday. I don't know are organisers changing their online info strategy, but like said, past years official spectator guide has been only on print. (there are pdf/app version available too)

I am attending Rally Finland for the first time this year!

Is there a good online info page for observers? i.e. where are observation points and how to get to them by car, etc...? I can't seem to find such anywhere.

We will be located near Länkipohja, so we will attend on Friday. Any suggestions for these sections would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

tommeke_B

For the jumps themselves my favourite spot to spectate is exactly just where the cars start flying on the first jump. There you can usually be quite close to the road (in all safety), it gives the most impressive feeling and the best view of the landing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ35D76Qtag

Also after the jumps, the long left before junction right is a nice corner as well and could give a better view if the crowds are huge.

Simmi
13th July 2015, 22:46
Same here. If you walk all the way in to the first jump the crowd seems to thin out - even though it's the biggest jump. There's much more room and some rocks you can stand on on driver's left. I've stood there twice and would go back in a heartbeat. Going there the first time absolutely blew me away.

And if you are really brave (or stupid) like me you can manage to get a shot like this at 15 sek, hiding in the ditch between cars and jump up when the marshalls are busy watching the cars ;)

Ruuhimäki was used in a local event in the beginning of June, ran the opposite way. In this case the last of the jumps gave some nice air for historic cars also. The white Corolla GT driver at about 0'50" hurt his back and ambulance was called.

If you're coming to Rally Finland for the first time, being at the jumps is the only choice. It's perhaps the best calling card to rallying in the world, at least for Rally Finland it is. I'd suggest to be there early enough (1,5-2 h before first car) to be able to select your desired spot. The vegetation in the area however allows a limited view for a lot of people (in June it looked like the organisers have cleared out smaller vegetation for better view), and you can easily walk around easily between the jumps. The part after the last jump is amazing as well; you see the jump and the left hander up into tight junction right. In my opinion that is a rally ballet as the car move and swing so smoothly around there. There are other places on Ruuhimäki too, but the jumps are definitely the greatest.

During previous years, all official spectator info has been published only in the printed guide. It should be out this week. I'll see if it'll be available online on an app or similar.

Länkipohja is ideal for Friday stages indeed, but it doesn't rule out Saturday stages by any means. Please send me PM, I can answer if you have questions about spectator points.

No Rally Finland for Jari Ketomaa.

He hurt himself in Fafe crash in Portugal, but competed in Poland. Now he has to take a break to let himself heal fully.

Newspaper Keskisuomalainen is suggesting Jarkko Nikara might replace him in Finland. They can change one member of the crew from the entry, so it's up to FIA now. Kaj Lindström will nevertheless be the co-driver.

Ketomaa´s facebookpage says that it is EYE-problem, he had problems with his "vision" in Poland. It´s OK now but not fully healed for jumping.
It also says that Nikara is driving with Kaj Lindström

Shame for Ketomaa as Finland was surely a big part of his WRC2 campaign.

Nice platform for Nikara. I think most people probably forgot he entered Finland last year. Over before it had even begun.

The field parking P5 at Ouninpohja does that have some kind transport to junction D or something?

And does anyone know if this road just under the purple doted line at the top of the lake coming from the right is open at Päijälä? No stop sign there...
I was a bit further north last year by the next stop sign on the right but can't remember if the one south of it was open, had to leave the car at a junction just north of Aulusjarvi last year and walk more than 2km to the stage because of a farmer blocking the road so not too eager on doing that again.

There’s bus transportation to the stage. Its nonstop transportation, the bus leaves when it’s full or nearly full. If you go there keep few euros in your pocket for bus ticket.

Figured it out now, the road is not completely connected like it says on the rally map but you have to walk through the woods a bit, shorter than walking from where i had to park last year anyway. Road ends where i started the 1.9km measurement. Map by gulesider.no

25th July 2015, 20:07
INTERVIEW: Jari-Matti Latvala, 'I want to fight in Finland'

It's been an up and down season for Volkswagen Motorsport's Jari-Matti Latvala; taking second place in Monte Carlo, followed by three zero point finishes in Sweden, Mexico and Argentina. He took home a win in Portugal, before finishing in sixth at Sardegna and fourth in Poland. But we're off to WRC Finland, Latvala's home event, where he soared to a triumphant victory in 2014, and Jari-Matti is hoping for a repeat performance there this year. He made some time for us to have a chat with him the day before his Finland test, and at the time, was off for a game of golf with his co-driver Miikka Anttila!

iR: Jari-Matti, we’re fresh off the back of WRC Poland, which proved to be a fairly treacherous event for almost every driver competing. Looking ahead to your home event, can you give us an idea of how you’re feeling and what you’re planning to achieve in Finland?

JML: The season has been a bit tough for me. It’s not been exactly what I was hoping for. Now, coming to my home event, which is one of the most important events of the year, I’m really looking forward to it – i'm just so motivated. The feeling is good; I want to fight for the top places! It’s a place where last year I managed to win it, and it’s a really great rally. Probably the greatest event of the season, from both a driver's perspective and a spectator's perspective.

iR: WRC Finland is renowned for being a tricky rally for co-drivers to master. The pace notes have to be spot on, the speeds are high and there are some pretty technical sections as well as some big jumps. How are you and Miikka planning to bend these stages to your will, and what will be the toughest thing for you both out there?

JML: There's not too many changes for the stages this year, maybe 30% are different, but most of them are old sections which have been done before. There are a couple of new stages, for instance the power stage. It was last featured in the event back in 84/85, so none of the top drivers have done it this way. There are also some new sections in another stage: Jukojärvi. In Finland, on the recce, the most important thing is to look at the jumps very carefully, see which side of the road you will take the line – do you go on the right side or middle, and of course, how you will brake. This is so important. Overall, in Finland, you have to think a lot more about the lines than other events – big wide roads, lots of crests, lots of jumps. You have to really concentrate on the recce. I’ve been watching old videos from the past to get a good idea as well!

iR: Friday will be a test for every driver, but you know these roads well. Since it’s the longest day of the rally, can you give our readers an idea of how you will prepare for it, how you intend to charge and how you will manage the pressure and the stress of it all throughout the course of the day?

JML: Friday is a really long day. There isn’t a proper service during the day, just a remote tyre zone, where the driver crew must change the tyres themselves for the car, but nobody from the team is allowed to be there! All the changes you do yourself, and if you need to do repairs, you have to work yourself. Overall, the Volkswagen Polo R WRC is a strong car, but you never know, something could always go wrong. It’ll be a tough situation, because Finland is such a high speed rally, so you have to be committed from the beginning. There’s no chance to just find your speed, you have to be on it from the first stage onwards! Friday’s stages are the most demanding; they are very nice big wide roads, but when you go over the jumps constantly, that’s asking a lot from the notes. The co-driver is giving the notes in the right time, but then you have to be really focused on keeping the speed up in the right places, and slow down in the slow corners or the notes will be off. Besides, in Finland, you just want to keep going fast everywhere, so control is key!

iR: You’re a fantastic and incredibly driven athlete, but one of the things you’re perhaps best known for is your great sportsmanship, as well as your encouragement and appreciation of all the other drivers in this championship – you’re somewhat of a role model for almost everyone in this sport! What do you think makes someone a great athlete in rally, and how do you maintain a positive outlook when things don’t always go your way?

JML: First of all, thank you, very nice to hear your comments! For me, it’s so important, when you explain about rallying, I want everyone to understand it! It’s a complicated sport, there are so many regulations and things to explain, so I try to say things simply. Everyone in this sport is a great athlete, but also, rally has become more and more like a real accepted sport. You prepare for the events like every other athlete, doing fitness training, taking serious fitness tests every year. When you drive the car, it’s a long day. You start at 7am and finish at 7pm if you’re lucky, and if it’s over 30 degrees outside it can be 50 degrees in the car. You start to question your physical fitness when you do 3 to 4 days, and that’s why it’s so important to work with yourself.

iR: Finally, we would love to know a little more about your goals for the rest of your season, and what you are hoping to achieve next year.

JML: I really hope that this end of the season I will find the consistency; this year has been up and down. Consistency is the most important thing for me. By next year, I hope to be on the level where I was at the end of 2014 – if I can have that same speed and consistency, then 2016 will be great. That’s the thing, if you have events that you score zero points on, and I got three in a row this year, and then you’re almost out of the championship. You can’t afford that.

Last time the test was run to its full length in 2013, Sebastien Ogier’s Volkswagen took off 77 times in 33.01 kilometres. Data from the fastest Polo R WRC down the road showed it spent 30.4 seconds in the air on a stage which only took 15m08.9s.

Air time’s a common feature of Ouninpohja; Markko Martin recorded Rally Finland’s longest jump ever when he sent his Ford Focus RS WRC ballistic for 57 metres at the famous crest alongside the yellow house, mid-way through. The Estonian’s take-off speed of 171 kph was the reason for his long leap and his victory on the 2003 event.

First I need to correct what I wrote earlier. The junction is at 17,5 km but the distance is from finish. From start it’s 5,9 km. Amazing how these (distance from start cannot be correct) things just suddenly leaps into one’s mind.

Maybe there’s no stop sign because there’s no road either on the spectator guide. But anyway it’s spectator are B and parking P2 are there. It’s a field parking with possibility to stay overnight.

Nice post on Julien Ingrassia's facebook-page:

"Home work :
Julien and Seb are testing in their Polo WRC.
This one runs the 5,4km long finnish stage in 2min09sec.
Questions :
- What is the average speed ?
- Do they need to meet Brain Doctor ?"

If I'm not mistaken that's some 150,7kph average? And some people are asking for faster cars..

So maybe 2.5km to the spot i was looking at then, was hoping it was field parking next to the finish line. Yeah i know the "jump" they talked about was nothing to see, but i got a better spot a bit before where Meeke had a 2 wheel landing. And yes it seemed like a good spot for going to Ouninpohja after EstWRC, might have to come up with a new plan!

We were there last year and had to park the car on the road that runs just to the left of the lake. Even though we were very early ,we got to drive on about 1 km on that road so we had a long way to go to start. There was also parking in the area what is white on the map we saw when we went back .
Very long way to walk.

EDIT: Couldn't find notion on the reversed order, so like RG2 says, they'll publish the start list at 16.00 on Thursday. Live broadcast on Finnish television starts at 20.00 and the stage starts at 19.00, so I think Ogier is not the first on the road.

Can you please post all important information here, shortly. I will go to filedwork in 7 hours and it would be nice to read it from here when I have returned.

Short wetaher update is that tomorrow it might be dry in the morning, some showers might be present in the afternoon but it is likely that there will not be any significant rain on SS1. Friday looks tricky. Morning should be OK but afternoon is very tricky. It is expected that low pressure area form exactly at around NORF stages, if the model is ture then there will not be any rain in the central part of low pressure area (normal situation), that means no rain for the rally. If the model is even slighly shifted then there wil be very heavy rainshowers in many stages. usually these models are not correct two days in advance, so, scenario with heavy rainshowers is likely. Maybe I can give you some update tomorrow night (well, that is in 22-23 hours).
Good night!

It’s 1,3-1,4 km from the junction as you showed on your map. Then it depends how close to the junction they will allow the cars to park and how long the parking queue is when you arrive (road parking).

"I have driven this road many times, but never like this! I knew that the speed would be really fast but the thing that was really amazing was how he handled the car under braking. When we were approaching a corner things happen that you don't think are possible. It was a really great experience and I think our time was pretty good too! Neuville says he was lucky to escape uninjured from a 100mph crash at the shakedown stage for Rally Finland.

The Hyundai driver went off the road backwards and straight into the trees on his first run through the final test for the Jyvaskyla-based event.

The team is now working on rebuilding the i20 WRC, which suffered significant rear end damage in the shunt, ahead of Thursday evening's opening stage.

"[Co-driver] Nicolas [Gilsoul] and I were pretty lucky to get away without any injury this morning," Neuville told AUTOSPORT.

"When you go straight to the trees at this speed, it's not so nice.

"The problem came for me in the fifth-gear left corner.

"I saw some braking marks from some of the boys before me; I tried to adapt, but I couldn't make the apex.

"We come to this corner at 160km/h [100mph]. It was quite a big moment.

"I was understeering straight away and I had to take the handbrake to try to back the car into the trees."

People can crash in rally cars. I don't think that's news to anyone on here.

Comparing Neuville crashing - a guy with over 50 WRC starts, mostly in a WRC car, trying to set his car up for a podium - to someone crashing in their first taste of a WRC car in Finland is something different.

For sure though Neuville's stock right now is the lowest it has been in a long time.

Finger posts
Corner cutting is common practice in Finland as drivers use every inch of the road to keep their speed up. But while clipping the edges might gain the odd tenth of a second here and there, the scrabbling tyres damage the roads and this year the Finnish authorities have taken steps to protect them. Brightly coloured finger boards [pictured below] are all over the route this year, warning drivers to keep clear of the edges. The signs are made of sheet aluminium mounted in a rubber foot, so it wouldn't be a disaster if a car did hit one. Question is, how many drivers will take the risk?

Yes, I am just up over here 06.20 and I see Breen---isn't it he who rolled a few meters into SS1 at WRC Poland, and here here and now BREEN AGIAN! and Neuville, and several other POOF! and where are the armchair heroes calling them "focking idiots"?

Now those guys calling Lukany an idiot must know something.....where is the piercing analysis now?

Personally I am very curious how these various guys are driving so riskily...I raced for decades and I know its always a balance but I wonder if the guys are in reality PAST their own skill limits and only the amazing suspension saving their asses most of the time? Or are these smaller cars so short that when they let go, they're just GONE and rotate around faster than the guys can catch the rotataion---

I don't know... but it is a bit odd we see guys throwing the cars into the woods so early.

Oh I'm just poking fun at how some guys know just so precisely what fault with the car or bike they had been hammering on led to their crashing it...
I've crashed literally 1000s of times and there were mechanical or vehicle related "contributing factors" in only about 5-6 times... I fawked up...nobody else had the hand on the gas (or foot in the case of rally car).... And 99.8% of the time, we will never really know the facts..
So we just joke about reasons given.

Yeh, we went there last year. It was pants. Was decent to watch on TV.

I think the spectators got a raw deal this year, in 2014 we watched 2 runs of Lankamma on Thursday evening which was a brilliant way to start the rally.

I would not give too much credits to drivers motivations of a slow time at the end of a stage. For sure it is difficult to understand what's wrong with him this year.
