still so angry that it is VW 1-2-3 again in the end of the day. Tänak is always unlucky and it seems it will follow him the rest of the career. Pretty sure he would be in top3 or in the lead if he hadnt brake problems.

looks like it will be like that 'till the end of the season, I say if Ogier doesn't encounter problems in germany, he can take the title there.

So, 1st day over; nothing dramatical happened.....1-2-3 for VW, Ogier already in the lead although he swept away some gravel as a front runner.
We need to praise the performance of the next three drivers (Ott, Hayden and Robert), all others average...but I suppose that all can not be between top six places. The race is still long and I'm sure we can expecting some surprises...
I'm definetely expecting more from Meeke.

of course you do... it is how each person perceives things...

after all most of people that claim they like rallying are just some overweight lost souls who go to events to watch the same hairpins each year over and over again... some even go to f1 events.

Rally togs take 100's of photo's at each event, but who wants to see just a car, gravel and dust 100's of times...

The cars and their travel through the stages are the priority, but they also have to show ambiance and context.

of course you need variety but if you go to a rally and 7 out of 10 places you visit are based on the scenery rather than the action offered then you simply should just go to grand canyon/lake tahoe and taj mahal and some weddings instead of a rally....

pictures from pros nowadays are more appropriate to be used by the countrys tourism ministry to promote the country rather than the rally...

for example take a look at the spots Martinjns, kksf, bunnings capture the footage and pictures, they are 1000 gazzilion times better than those of some pros (some are still really really good)... the aforementioned guys are true hardcore rally spectators who know what rallying is about thats why their footage are amazing, they do research of each stage they visit and it shows rather than following the organisers instructions, they know how a car is going to behave on each spot, if you let a pro photographer choose a spot he will probably choose a handbrake hairpin because their perception of the sport is really really poor and it is very sad if you take into account the amount of events they have been into, and then you have them complain about the photographers that offer their photos for free...

I had the priveliege to join one of those "pros" in a couple of events, and I can tell you that I recceed the events from start to finish as if I was a proper competitor, even if it was the 3rd time on that event... and many of the places were chosen by judging in advance how the car would behave...

while observing his work, I ofte3n tended to question his decisions on the photos he would take because of my "fan" aproach: we want all the photos to be what they call "action" photos... but I learned to understand why he makes those decisions and why other kind of photos are also needed...

I think you're being a little short sighted by a lack of knowledge of how they do their work and who they work for...

Good job again by Tanak.

He's putting the likes of Neuville to shame here. They both have decent road positions but he still cant cut it... :(

Paddon also doing well against his team-mate.

Citroen's are poor again... just not good enough on the high-speed stuff. Confidence is low.

About Citroen, Mads mentioned in the press conference that the situation in the team is "complicated" at the moment, i wonder what that means and that is why they didnt test for poland. And Meeke is not allowed to push after shakedown incident, thats the impression i got in the end of one of the stages.

also interesting would be if we could see the footage from the phone of the spectator who is at the edge of the road inside the grass.

Not that big of a deal unless there are just as many standing after the landing, it's a straight road with threes lining it so pretty hard to go the wrong way over the jump.

AL14
5th July 2015, 01:40
there were people 80 metres from the road inside a corner at the shakedown and a huge crowd nearly in the road in a jump taken at more than 100 kmh. Can't find any logic in that. And the fact it is a straight is not an excuse. It's easy for a car that fast to change the direction if it doesn't land properly.

5th July 2015, 02:13
they were lucky to have only one stage cancelled. The people at the base of the jump get a great view if everything is good, and get killed if it isn't. Very dangerous, but exciting. The question has to be what would have happened if it had gone wrong, and how much damage would it have done to the people and to the sport of Rally. Huge damage to both is the answer.

Real good performance by Tanak, finally. It was known he is capable of these kind of performances but this is the first time this season he showed it.

Also Paddon has definitely convinced me now, again outperforming Sordo and Neuville. Talking about Sordo, he was quite disappointing, like Ostberg. Both should be capable of more with their experience.

I have given up on Latvala for good now. Mikkelsen is getting close to his first victory but without Ogier getting into trouble he won't win yet.

Abbring had a steep learning curve, especially with no pre event test these kind of stages are probably the most shocking to get to learn a WRC car. Setting similar times to Prokop is not too bad considering that I think.

I agree. Latvala can be fast, but he will never be world champion. Sad but true. He doesn´t have head for it. And Mikkelsen could be this year´s vice-master. I bet he will be. He is fast, but without Ogier´s mistake he can´t win. Not yet.

Very exciting rally is finished! I enjoyed it very much. Although the ''Master'' won it again, the gaps very close, it proved to be an interesting event.
Few facts which I want to share : except Evans all top drivers finished the rally. With the speeds, outside temperatures, jumps....the WRC cars are not that piece of crap.
The men of the past three days : Ott Tanak. If he will continue with this speed in Finland, top three finish is reachable for him.
Hayden Paddon impressed once more, I didn't think he will be able to carry on with his dominant show from Italy. Very good indeed!
Neuville - starting to lose ground under his feet. I think he sees Hayden constantly in his nightmares.....
Rober Kubica; the local boy....well, I'm a bit disappointed with you guys, nobody said nothing about his performance this weekend. After all guy finished the rally (what a success!!), didn't have any ''journey'' into the woods&lawns; he beat fair & square Sordo, Ostberg and almost Meeke.
Talking about Meeke - I still expected more from him. I know that a roll on SD brings little to driver's self-confidence, but he is a pro and during this event he was totally lost.
Sordo; sub-average event for him. Finland should be better for him, at least I hope so.

i will be walking around with a huge smile on my face the next couple of days. Wanted to see earlier this kind of performance but i think it was the right decision from the team and Tänak to learn in the first half of the season and start to push in the second half.

Tänak, Ogier, Mikkelsen, Paddon and Kubica the drivers for me this rally. I agree with N.O.T, we need more rallies like these and the drivers loved it too. Cant comment the organizing.

Meeke didn't want to crash again. If you are careful in such fast events you loose more time than in other rallys. Same with Latvala for example.
I'm sure in Finland Kris will be in good shape like last year. That's what happen if you are one of the most fast driver in the world but still a human being.
If you are not human like we know who you don't have these kind of problems.

I know 100% that Škoda has reasonably more powerful engine than all other R5. They have been struggling with setups but it seems they are going in a good way. Morever to date there has been only one mechnical retirement from nineteen starts and that one was caused by a faulty battery. That is pretty awesome record for R5 car. Everything suggests that other manufacturers will face hard times and in this moment their biggest luck is that Škoda is very slow with delivering new cars (afaik due to difficulties with suppliers). Let's see what others can do with their jokers. I'm sure they don't sleep.

Rober Kubica; the local boy....well, I'm a bit disappointed with you guys, nobody said nothing about his performance this weekend. After all guy finished the rally (what a success!!), didn't have any ''journey'' into the woods&lawns; he beat fair & square Sordo, Ostberg and almost Meeke.

wd to Robert! not only did he finish it without superrally, he posted very competitive times throughout the event, driven flatout by a lot of people

I think he is starting to realise it's not that easy to win in wrc... no matter how talented you are, it takes time... it took time to all of them...

Lots of folks still a bit niggly about Ogier. I guess it is just frustration at seeing a single person dominate a sport for so long. Schumacher, Loeb etc. It is a little frustrating for fans and does take the mystery out of it a bit. But credit where it is due. Having these very good people and very good teams makes others lift their game just a bit.

Please do not include the names of Ogier and Loeb with that of Scumacher... the first two were and are proper champions the later wasn't and in the end he got some life justice.

How can you be so harsh? How can you afford someone to be permanently disabled? How can you even think of something like that??

I don't think it's domination factor, I loved Loeb era but Ogier annoys me, it's about personality. The difference is Loeb was unbeatable in all conditions and didn't complain about rules or road position all the time, he's a class driver/person. Ogier is arrogant and stresses that in every occasion, complains about rules all the time, eventhough very often that give him advantage, just huge ego.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but how were so many people allowed to stand in such a dangerous place, and so close to the stage. I'm sure you'll know which spot I mean!

It's not that dangerous I think...straight road with trees besides it. Nobody is going to jump a few meters of the line there. Don't have a good view of how they are standing after the landing part though.

Strange approach from organizers I must admit - total closure of roads as tool to control spectators, but when you are in - do (stay) whatever you want to do.

What if wrong notes? What if technical damage? What if... Would you allow your daughter to stand there? :) I am not.
Of course it's absolutely stunning when you are standing on the top of the jump and see cars flying away in distance of hand (last year Poland experience). But it in same time I didn't feel very comfortable because of "what if..."

I was at this spot, it was incredible (Tanak especially)! But I was seriously worried about people standing after landing zone.

There were not enough marshalls, and frankly at that spot, they didn't give a shit.

At about 1:35 Abbring lands and it looks pretty close to disaster! For years we have been told in programmes, on tickets, by marshals etc, don't stand anywhere after a jump. On the approach the spectators are far too close as well.

Sorry, but if the FIA are serious about safety then they need to review videos from that spot, because if a car had gone off it would have been absolutely tragic. I like to stand in a thrilling place myself, but that just looks like there is no control whatsoever. Looks like an event from the '80s!

The early/mid 80s:eek:

Is it a coincidence that all the places where speccies are all seemingly willing to die are all Catholic countries?

Back from one of the most spectacular events I've seen so far, but also one of the worst organized. It's very difficult to get access to the stages, but once you are on them, nobody cares about what anyone is doing. Most marshalls are like 18-20 year old students who have no authority at all, one of them told me he had never seen a rally before...

I was at the jump that's discussed here. We did recce of the stage and thought that this would be completely mad, and it was... On the first run I arrived a bit late and it was almost impossible to get a good and safe spot. For the first cars I was somewhere before the landing, but so many people with phones, selfie-sticks and gopro cameras ruin your view/photo completely. Then moved to the complete end of the row behind all spectators and the marshalls so there was nobody in my way if I had to jump away. I left after Kubica because it was too crazy for me as some other people started standing behind me. It's a shame when you find a great spot but have to leave if you don't want to get killed... On the run back we saw the crash of Abbring, it's a real miracle that no spectators were hit. On the 2nd loop we returned and took a spot before the jump. Also the security behind it was better (not perfect, but better). What you get to see there is unimaginable (but only for a few drivers, that needs to be said too).

Security is a major problem not only on this place. Sometimes on some places it's extremely strict, on other place there's no safety at all. On shakedown a large group of spectators decided to ignore the forbidden areas after the 0-car had passed, marshalls were clueless.

With some good planning we got to see relatively calm places which were always very impressive! For somebody who loves fast corners this is the best event you can imagine. It's quite similar to Finland but much more open and with less crests, so there are better/longer views. When you do recce on these stages it's very hard to imagine how the approach will be, because it's almost straight when you drive it at normal/slow speed with a normal car. Seeing WRC drivers come towards a corner at (almost) top speed, then quickly touch the brakes and pull the steering wheel in order to put the car in position (completely sideways), already something like 40 or more meters before a long corner... It's crazy. It's unbelievable how drivers can go this much on the limit on new stages after only 2x recce, without crashing...

The organizers could have made it easier for the spectators standing further from the road by cutting down some of the very tall grass lining the stages, not sure if i would do this rally myself because i would have to take too much risk finding good video spots. They are very good at this in Finland.
