EDIT - Fisher crashed out on SS3.. crew ok, car not too bad but out for today. Maybe his thoughts were elsewhere...

Just "climbed" down from Kaprun glacier to follow the action in Northern Ireland. I feel sorry for Consani, he was doing great job. Also pity we lost Fisher. Otherwise it's nice to see so many locals on top! Juniors are mad as always :p And finally from a Czech point of view I'm happy with times of Tarabus. It's not that special. The city stage requires no knowledge of local conditions etc. It's quite common phenomena that foreign drivers are very fast on such stages but don't keep the pace on the real stages. Those city stages are usually purely about driving skills but in the real stages it's more about pacenotes, experience etc.

Stages like these are rare here, are they common on European events? I wish we had more of them and certainly drivers like Breen really can have no excuse for not having made it their business to learn how to be faster on them.

It's a shame Woodsides Porsche broke as his autotest experience should have been good for him here, certainly he did well on it last year in the EVO 10

Yes, I would say that city stages are quite popular here. A few years ago nearly each rally in Poland had its own city stage. Not everybody likes them, but they are good for the publicity of rally sport.

I cant believe how much time Breen lost on those two street stages. He could have lost the rally there if Katjo had not lost time earlier in the day...
As it is he cant afford any mistakes now.

Yes, I agree, Kajto drives very well on this unknown rally. But I think the Irish drivers were simply surprised by him as to how much time they can lose on this city stage. I don't think they can lose their places on "normal" stages tomorrow...

I have to say that I don't wish it at all. This one in Ireland was even worst than others, with all that big ballons all over the place. Ireland has some of the most beautiful landscapes (and rally roads) in the world and the only live coverage was with green ballons in the middle of the street.

The only thing I like about this kind of stages is that they keep rally alive by bringing casual people to see sponsors.

Wasn't he saying that the car is still down on power? Ie he hasn't been able to fix it, that would certianly explain it in a tight city stage horsepower out of slow corners will be more important than in normal stages.

It is a necessary thing luckily a few minutes' stage so why bother. If this is the price the organization has to pay to get the buget sorted for the whole rally weekend, I would say; okay then. Normally when we are at rally and there is such a stage we go to starting order you can see the drivers close and have a talk with them, or making pictures. I see such a stage as ideal for dads and their little kids to spread the rally virus

20000 spectators at it I think last year, and few of them will have been die hard fans who will have known enough to watch on the real stages, anything that lifts the profile of the sport and gets it back in front of the public in a positive light is good, thankfully you are clearly not Bobby Willis....

Hey, that was my point too. I think they are positive for this kind of reason and if I were an organizer I will for sure add them to the rally route. Don't misunderstand this point. But let me say I just don't like them personally and I don't wish there will be too much of them on a single rally. I think this is a fair point.

Before this event even started, all Porsche fans knew that this stages are not suited for 911 GT3. The heavy back of the car is not tailored for jumps, car is simply to nervous...911 likes smooth ground, with fast, open corners and long straights.....Maybe a ''special'' driver like Snijers, Zeltner, Delecour, Dumas...wolud be faster, but no way a match against R5......

I agree with You. I think the best example of successful city stage is Barum Rally Zlín city stage. The stage is quite wide, relatively fast and long for a city stage an extremely crowded every year (around 40 thousand people every year). Even quite many drivers like it and I know that many foreign spectators come here mainly to experience the city stage.

I'm sure it is possible to make times in top 20 with Porsche in CoI and I personally think even top 10 could be possible in some stages. The car is not so bad. It requires big balls to drive but itself the car is fast.

Yep, they had issues with the stage start timing most of yesterday and this morning.

I'm sure it is possible to make times in top 20 with Porsche in CoI and I personally think even top 10 could be possible in some stages. The car is not so bad. It requires big balls to drive but itself the car is fast.

Top 10 maybe for Delecour level driver today on dryer roads, yesterday running further back on wet mucky roads the car looked nasty to drive, looked and sounded great though

I agree, needed more Manx type stages to do the drive justice. Woodside was and maybe had to be cautious. CoI certainly not the best event for it. Good to see (and hear) all the same.

This is rediculous.... half hour after the end of rally the times of Juniro drivers are changed significantly.. For long time no stage times at all. Then many wrong times and missing times. Such things should not happen. It completely destroyed the rally for all who were not following it live. If such problem repeats then no mather how good the rally is they shoudl fix it or this rally should not be in the calendar anymore.

Otherwise it was nice rally. Seems that Breen won it.. maybe :-P both he and Katjo did a good job. DS3R5 proved that its unreliability was 150% in Ireland, two engine problems and one gerabox.

It was strange to follow the rally in the forrests with such a crazy results and no radio...

Question to Craig Breen
It’s another win but it was far from straightforward. Can you explain what was wrong with your car and what about that spin on the penultimate stage?
CB: “We had a small niggly problem with the turbo which pretty much scuppered us in qualifying on Thursday and all of Friday. It was only at midday service today that we actually rectified the problem. To be honest with you they rectified the problem because they changed just about everything they could do. And finally after a process of elimination they fixed it for the last three stages. So we started our push and then on the second to last stage in Banbridge just after the start there was a fast left-hand corner at crossroads and a compression. On the first time we went through we filled the road and went away but on the second time we were a little too fast and spun and was very lucky not to do any damage to the radiator. Then on the last stage we had an overshoot about five or six kilometres into the stage. I stalled the car twice trying to get it restarted. Scott in fairness said ‘don’t stop believing now’ and I’ll never forget that. Then it was a bit of a push from then on in.”

I have to admit this was my first thought too. Toys out of the pram? No specified issue. Okay it costs money to compete but that's a big error to make and there has to be consequences. It's a shame because he was night and day ahead of the other much-touted juniors. Looked great out on the stages.

Well Teemu, Iīd appreciate more if you look at the odd things more than just being accusing. We all know what Emil done. And it has nothing to do with whom got the trophy. This man Armstrong did what others on this forum always says about homedrivers. He did good on home soil. And that is not enough getting a trophy. I think that f.i. Jean-Pierre Nicolas of ERC knows exactly why he choosed Armstrong for the Flat Out Trophy. Of course everybody can have his own thoughts about this decision. Jon Armstrong missed absolutely first tyre marking zone. When you were starting the rally from TC 0, you must go to main road, turn to right and after 100 m turn to left to go to another parking for refuelling (and marking which was after refuelling). He didnt turned left, but was going directly via main road to the first stage...

Regarding the retirement - he put the car into parc ferme, but in the morning his mechanic picked it up. So I think it was his choice, but I was not talking to him yet about it.

Results in Ireland were disaster. We were joking in media center, that on Friday we had bad results, but on Saturday we had no results. But you must look positively - as I have lost patience with the results, I have decided to go for last loop directly to the stages to see the cars. After long time I have seen cars on real stage (unfortunatelly without Barrable, Thorburn and some others).

Armstrong had a 31 second lead over Bergkvist before he got his 5 minute penalty.

Bergkvist was going at a tremendous pace, so to take 30+ seconds out of him I'd say that must be pretty 'Flat Out'.

In terms of the Circuit of Ireland as a whole, it's great to see all the discussion about the achievements of the drivers and no more griping about foreign drivers not able to attend, or the local drivers not competing in the International (ERC) section.

The foreign drivers came and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and the Irish & Brits have finally been able to afford the modern machinery (R5s etc) to take part.

The event was always fantastic in terms of its long history and the driving thrill of its roads. But now its has the driver participation to match, it truly deserves its place in a major rally championship.

That was not the point. My point was that speed is not measured by spectacle which is purely subjective thing anyway.

True. From what I saw from onboards though, Bergkvist style is little different, seemed more on the limit on some fast corners with some mud, it seemed little risky too, but probably this event requires "something else", while Armstrong on some slow corners seemed to drive very slow and not knowing how to get out of it. But I repeat again may be just some "moments" in the whole "picture".
For sure Armstrong was the faster of these two.

Congratulations to Breen on his win as well as to Kajto for his excellent drive despite his first visit in Ireland!

I have just checked out final results of the national rally. I have to say I'm a little disappointed. Dessie McCartney and his Darrian T90 GTR only managed to finish in the 22nd position, behind many R2 cars and 30-year-old Ford Escorts :(

Do you know anything about Dessie? He isnt a young man, his best days were before any of the top International drivers were born and he just goes out for his own enjoyment now.

To be honest I've never heard of this guy, but looking at his stats yeah he must be an old national hero, very nice to see the great old Terry Harryman who was with him in the early years. It was the years you had to be a real man to cope with the undriveable HP monsters without power steering and two wheel drive at the back. ;)

Jaromír Tarabus today in his press release praised Irish fans who managed to get his car back on the road even though he himself thought it's over.

He also said his off was on the same place as Kajto's and Breen's big moments.

No, I have never heard about him. I read on the Darrian website that they "have a reputation for building competition cars with giant killing performance". That's why I was curious about the results.

Here in this picture you can clearly see the place where Tarabus went off one loop before Breen (displayed) spun there...

What is the set-up with the ERC timings.. is the same company used or does each rally have its own organisation ?

Each rally has its own timekeepers and also results group. On ERC pages they are only receiving data from organiser and putting it into unique design.

Eurosport may have all their professional cameramen with their cameras and all the latest technology, but it's Lotos team that makes the best video from Circuit of Ireland. Instead of crappy videos by Eurosport watch this video that best portrays the atmosfere of Ireland:

Such a shame this atmosphere didnīt become more public. And so many good places to cover on the stages! Thumbs up for Lotos team though!!

Hmm not really sure what you're getting at. That video has used mostly footage shot by the Eurosport cameras. A lot of it made it into the TV coverage. Certainly it's a good video. But it's the same technology. Just edited together differently.

Dessie McCartney was perhaps one of Ireland's best drivers in his day (along with his late brother Ronnie) here with Terry Harryman (again). Picture 1- 1976 Donegal International Picture 2- 1976 Circuit of Ireland, nearly 40 years ago:

Agreed.

Bit harsh to compare something (Eurosport) put together with about 3 hours versus something put together (Lotos Team) with 3 days....

I don't know what you mean too :) What I wanted to say is that Eurosport have their TV crews, cameras and helicopters, but it's one guy from Kajto's team who shows them how a good video is made. No crappy music and random images, but beautifully edited video with nice music that emphasizes the atmosphere of the rally. Plus - how many videos have you seen in your life that show two main rivals in the championship dancing together in embrace to a folky Irish tune? ;) I don't know about you, but I loved it! :)

I wonder whey there are no quality non-official videos on youtube like from most of the events. Flying Finn Motorsport videos weren't there?

Flying Finn? Maybe next week. They took 12 days to make the video from West Cork Rally :)
