Ok, it's time.

Rally Liepaja - 6-8 February
Official website - http://2015.lvrally.com/eng
Available documents - http://2015.lvrally.com/eng/competitors
Entries opened from 15 December.

Interesting news - World Rallycross Championship third place holder Reinis Nitišs will take part in it on Ford Fiesta R2. One time outing to improve his driving skills.

Another interesting info - motto for this year is: "This rally is coool"

(to understand - we are joking with organisers, that they had bad weather during last years because of their mottos "This rally is hot" and "This winter is fast" ; and until they will have "This rally is cold", they will not have enough snow ;) )

I think that entry fee for this rumour entry is free. It is only enough to write here on forum, that you want to start. But your attempt to make entry has two biggest mistakes - you didnt wrote name of your mother, her age is not enough. And you are entering with the car, which dont have homologation and is still only in development ;)

Rally Liepaja is very well organized rally and often very nice to follow. There is only one problem. It is held in a very bad place, climatically. But what can you do when the money is there (sponsors), good organizers, better infrastructure are there and more people are there. You just have tope that organizers wont get too much gray hair before the rally due to weather tricks. It seems that some + dgrees are expected in next few days, however, long term prognosis for the region look promising. Hopefully it realizes. However, it is likely there will not me much snow again. But It seems that there will be plenty of ice, frozen gravel and some snow - kind of challange!

Long term prognosis for Sweden look still pretty good. Some snow and cold is expected for the near-future There is already 30-35 cm of snow, measured in nearby stations.

Same like on Janner, 15" with studs. But with one really important difference - not with small studs, but with big studs.

BREEN AIMING ONE STEP HIGHER IN LATVIA...

Fresh from his second place finish at WRC Rallye Monte Carlo, Peugeot Rally Academy driver Craig Breen heads back to the European Rally Championship this week for round two “Rally Liepāja” (6th-8th February) in Latvia. Having twice previously finished on the second step of the podium using a Peugeot 207 S2000 here before it’s going to be a great opportunity for Craig and his co-driver Scott Martin to notch up their second ERC win for both themselves and the Peugeot 208 T16.

It will be Craig’s third time to compete on the rally it will be the team’s third winter rally already this year so confidence all round is high ahead of the event.

As customary on the ERC the Peugeot Rally academy crew will have the opportunity to choose their road order position first for leg one if they can guide their 208 T16 over a short 3km qualifying stage in the fastest time against their championship rivals on Friday. Last year Craig posted second fastest time and the chose to run fourteenth on the road as he felt this allowed him the best grip before the gravel surface beneath the snow began to deteriorate.

Before leaving for Latvia Craig said, “I’m really looking forward to the rally this year, with the confidence our second place in Monte Carlo has given me and our experience on the rally, we are determined to take a another win.”

For me, Lukyanuk is favourite. This is his type of event, and now he has an R5 car..

Yes, I also think that Lukyanuk will be hard to beat. I think he likes such stages and he is crazy :)
In the case of Breen, everything depends on the car.
And Kajto doesn't seem very confident about tyres with long studds:
I am not used to driving on tyres with over 1500 long studs. It looks like just another winter rally but these tyres work in a completely different way to those we used on our way to victory in opening round of FIA European Rally Championship. Long studs give good grip on ice and after many years of driving my brain was programmed in completely opposite way. I was used to avoiding ice. This is why during Rally Liepāja I will exceed the limits of my knowledge and experience. When you drive on long studs, you have to change your thinking, habits and reactions. It is not possible to learn these things while driving on other types of tyres. We drive at high speeds so the margin for error is very small and my Latvian experience from last year for sure will help. I have to give everything in order to think about victory.

Does not look like Liepaja region. However, there was light-moderate snowfall today and tonight in the region and temperature should stay below 0 until Saturday. So, the conditions might look nice but I am not sure if there is much ice on the road surface left.

Then he has chosen completely wrong place for testing.. conditions in Latvia are 200% different. Yeah, I just checked all the maps and even satellite photos and it seems that there is indeed a bit more snow than I was expecting.. seems that SS3 region has the most (it is like a little highland). Funny thing is that when you go towards the east.. there is no snow, when you go further north.. there is no snow, when you go west, there is no snow ( i didt check the south). There is more snow in the forrests and very little between the fields. So, conditions will be very challangeing! Then we can see who is the smartest driver ;-)
You can take look to the road cameras and road weather stations.. it is minus 6 right now. PS! Do not check the camera close to Ventspils, it is not working (there is still summer :-P). link is here: http://balticroads.net/ Kalvene camera is very close to SS3

It doesn't look speed-up. In my opinion it's the wide lens and especially the placement of it what makes it looking so fast. Here mediasport sometimes put cameras on the bumpers and the resulting perception of speed is similar.

Great! The ice is most important. There was some snow before and it seems it stayed long enough to form good ice layer. Very small or nearly missing snowbanks is the factor that makes it tricky for the drivers!

Actually in Liepaja is +2 and more windy than in previous days.

Shortly about the weather. Quite unexpected warm weather has arrived to the region. But be aware that stages are more inland and the wind is not so strong there and temperatutre is also lower.

So, Shakedown, temperature is between +1 and +2, wind 5-6 m/s from NW and W
Ss1 and 2 Cloudy, no major precipitation, temperature +1 wind 6-7 m/s
This +1 should not be too bad for Ss2 and 4 but it more dangerous to Ss1, as it is more in open fields and together with strong wind, the snow melts faster. So, drivers must save their studs there (next stage is more in forrest).
Ss3 Temperature around +1 degree, major part of the stage is in the forrest, so, there should be no big harm for the snow and ice layer.Wind is from West and 6-7 m/s

Ss4 and 5 Temeperature is still around +1 or little less, wet snow might start to fall during the stage or just before the stage goes live. Wind is still 5-7 m/s and from West

Temperature drops below zero overnight. And snow continiues to fall.
SS6: Wind picks up, turns to NW and N and there will be proper snowstorm with widnspeeds 9-11 m/s temperature will be around -2 (windchill factor together with wind will be huge, its should feel like -15!). I expect around 5 cm of fresh snow in the forrest and some snowpiles on the road for the first cars at the end of stage (more open landscape). Should be huge disadvantage for the first drivers.
SS7 and 8, wind picks up even more and it is now 10-12 m/s, temperature is still between -1 and -2. Snow continues to fall. Both stages are semi-open landscapes and it means nice flying snow and some snowpiles on the road.

Last stages: 9-11. Wind is still almost the same 10-12 m/s, from North. Temperature should be around -2 and some sun might appear for short periods. Just some snowshowers are expected. However, due to strong wind and flying snow, you might not be able to see the sun or that it is not actually snowing :-)

So, Take ultra warm clothes with you and make sure they are windproof and waterproof (for tomorrow). Be careful in the traffic and stages, visibility can be very bad due to snowstrom and you might not hear rallycars due to strong wind on the stages!

I bet Pirelli does not have advantage against Michelin when competing Scandinavian tyres (with the 7-8 mm studs). If there is no snow and only frozen gravel then Pirelli will have ad bdue to it´s different type of manufacturing method.

But we´ll see. I hope this will not be a tyre gamble...

'The Belarus driver was leading Rally Liepāja when he and co-driver Yevhen Chervonenko came into an innocent looking fifth-gear corner.
“It was a simple corner, which tightened over a crest,” said Lukyanuk. “We lost the rear of the car in the middle of the corner and went into a ditch onto the inside and rolled two times. There were no spectators there, it isn’t the place you would go to watch because it was a simple corner, so we couldn’t get the car out. It is a shame and I am really sorry for the fans and the team. The car is not badly damaged, so we would like to restart tomorrow to check the settings and the handling of the car.”

Back to this point. So far there has been no clear advantage for either brand today. The road position had definitely bigger impact on the results.

Regarding Sirmacis I can say he is really crazy fast! Two weeks ago in Latvian national rally - Sarma, he finished very high, between 4wd cars. Week before he won local rally in evo9 with top gpN drivers. So he is really fast! Many other R2 drivers are also fast and their starting position is good. We will see tomorrow if Sirmacis will have advantage over them regarding tire management - today he should save some tires driving first loop not on gravel like other R2 drivers.

Hi, finally back to computer.. seems that snow arrived exactly at the right time, as expected yesterday :-)

The roads are cutting up badly (ice breaks and first cars have to sweep the broken ice-slush) and later cars are driving on ruts and almost on gravel. Another reason is that these cars are lighter and studs are not suffering so much and stay longer in the tyres. So, when there are icy sections between the forrest, then light R2 cars should have huge advantage. And R2 cars in Baltic states are used to drive in ruts (starting last in rallies):-P On the second roud you can see that R2 cars are much slower, buts stil quite fast. So, road is cleaner but they are still having betters studs.

Weather for Sunday:

Shortly, first on the road is not the place to be. Some wet snow overnight, but surface temperature is already -1..-4 degrees, everything will be little frozen tomorrow. The day should be between -2, and -3, strong wind (10 m/s) and moderate snowstorm (makes you feel like -15). Light snow is expected during whole night and more intense snow from 6 am. strongest snowfall will be from 6am-12pm. The amount of snow that comes down from the sky should be between 5-10 cm during the day, but due to the wind, it piles up and makes nasty surprises for the first drivers, especially on the open sections.
So, icy ruts covered by snow sounds pretty nice for spectators;-)
So, tomorrow you can see that this witer is cool ;-)

Today we have interesting situation. Jeets is first on the road but his times are not too bad compared to his closest rivals. first 8 starters are 2wd and 4wd mixed. these cars are using different lines and therefore it is hard also for the following starters. Now we still have snowtsorm (it is snowing again) and flying snow. Conditions will be very difficult for the second pass as well. Those who figth for the positions... not good. We lost 3 out of 11 Junior ERC cars in three first stages and one had major timeloss.
