Define 80s.

Most of the bands already mentioned were making music in the 70s or earlier. Both Genesis and Jethro Tull realeased their first album in the 60s.

Musical taste is very personal so I suspect we'll get the usual debates, including obscure bands that few have heard of, but I'll throw in U2, a true 80s band as they signed their first album deal in 1980.

Other notables:

Metallica
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Prince

Queen reign supreme. ;) , especially when you take their live shows into consideration. Dire Strait did some good music as well though.
Also I think your forgot AC/DC. who's Back in Black was released in 1980.

Though some of the groups I think of as "80's bands" may have made music before that decade, I would include The Cars, Talking Heads, Dire Straits, Genesis, Simple Minds, The Thompson Twins, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (throw in the Traveling Wilburys too), U2, R.E.M., The Police and probably 20 others that I'll think of 5 seconds after I hit "reply". Other than the 60's, the 80's was my favorite musical time period. Too hard to pick just one favorite.

For the most part IMO asking what the best bands of the 80s were is like asking which STD you prefer!! Some great tracks produced in the 80s but of those mentioned only SRV stands out to me, and to be fair his music was largely of a style of earlier decades.

std also means subscriber trunk dialing with regard to making telephone calls.
VD was a commonly used term in the early 80s a long time before video discs were common place.

Pink Floyd?
Really?
The '80s could arguably be their nadir rather than their zenith.
Here's their studio discography:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967)
A Saucerful of Secrets (1968)
More (1969)
Ummagumma (1969)
Atom Heart Mother (1970)
Meddle (1971)
Obscured by Clouds (1972)
The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
Wish You Were Here (1975)
Animals (1977)
The Wall (1979)
The Final Cut (1983)
A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987)
The Division Bell (1994)

I, too, really liked The Division Bell. But we're talking about the 80s here.

Wish You Were Here, IMO, is their best.

Wish You Were Here is the best to listen to but I always think that Dark Side is better as a work of art, a complete piece. I think that Meddle is hugely underrated as well, very few people seem to mention it.

Pink Floyd are probably my favourite group of all time. I was listening to 'The division Bell' at work the other day, some of the young guys there had never actually listened to any of their stuff and made fun of my choice in music :/ ... but hey I don't like a lot of the charts crap they listen to either, each to their own I guess.

Nobody have mentioned Europe yet? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jK-NcRmVcw

And what about Def Leppard? I don't know much about their music though. Then there's Helloween.

Exactly! Unfairly forgotten continental synth pop: Modern Talking, Joy, C.C. Catch, Sandra, Silent Circle, Radiorama, Secret Service... Bring 'em back (alive)!

Are you serious? A lot of fossils who were successful in the '80's ( Sandra, Baccara, CC Catch, Al Bano, BZN, Boney M, Ottawans, etc. ) are coming now to Bucharest and I wonder who's going to see them.....

80s was the best time for my type of music - from classic rock to pure heavy metal to the aggression of thrash metal...

best 80s bands for me -
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest (although arguably a couple of their best albums are in 70s), Rush, Megadeth, Dio, Kreator

edit: although I also love Pink Floyd and Deep Purple I think their best music was from the 70s)

They tour our part of Europe as well, they and some local stars from that era. It's normally called the Discotheque of the 80s and plenty of people go there to get nostalgic about their first dance, first smoke, first drink, first kiss etc.

On a serious note, I would nominate Brian Adams. His pop rock defined a big segment of the 80s' music and stood the test of time very well.
