Still almost half a year, but RG 1 is already out. Link: http://www.ypresrally.com/docs/Rally_Gu ... 080114.pdf (http://www.ypresrally.com/docs/Rally_Guide_One_GYR14_080114.pdf)

20 stages (11 different ones), totalling 324,11km SS which makes it longer than some WRC events. Again driven on friday afternoon/night and a long saturday... :) Almost completely new is SS Reninge, at least 15 years ago since the stage has been used for the last time (maybe some older member can tell an exact number?), the stage should be driven partly on concrete roads, a bit different character from other stages. Also there's a 20km long SS Westouter, the stage will cross the French border, where they will drive some roads ( have already beenused for testing and stage of a Northern French event) near Boeschepe, I think it could be a great stage.

Anyone who is coming this year? :)

Isn't that millage a bit too long for ERC regulations?

You can count with me again, Tom :D

I will be there for sure :D I have seen there is provisional timing allready on website of Ypres. They won't go anymore to rather stupid city stage in France, on the other hand they will still do the Lille-Eurometropole stage, and like Tom said the Westouter stage will cross French border. It will be interesting to see this stage. ;)

Hello all, I will be at the Nurburgring 24 Hours the weekend of 20-21 June and thought that I might skip the Thursday or Friday at the track in order to see some tarmac rallying for the first time. My initial plan is to go for the qualifying stage on Thursday and drive back to the 'Ring overnight for Friday morning, taking some Belgian beers and waffles with me, obviously.

I'm just wondering how the format for the qualifying stages works. I have been to WRC in UK and Sweden, so I understand the basic concept, but not sure if it's any different for ERC or for tarmac rounds. So if I were to do qualifying/shakedown, would I likely see the cars more times than upon the timed stages on Friday, as has been the case on those WRC rounds?

Thanks for any help and advice.

Mirek
26th April 2014, 23:19
Every ERC priority driver will have two free and one qualification run. However it is not possible to say now who will be priority driver. In the ERC there is no fixed list of priority drivers. basically promoter (Eurosport) decides who it wants to have on TV. Expect 10-15 priorities. The rest (in Ypres You can expect altogether around 100 cars) can do whatever number of runs it manage in the rest of time after qualifying runs (I think another 2-3 hours of action). In some ERC events they even let cars go every 30 seconds to allow all drivers to go as many times as possible (during qualification it's 2 minutes gap I think).

If qualification/shakedown is same as usually take a place in the fields between the main road crossing and the village where the stage ends. There is a lot of nice corners there ;)

Looks like we could have the best entry list in years.

Entered or confirmed in s2000/R5 so far:

Breen - 208 R5
Abbring - 208 R5
Tsjoen - 208 R5
Magalhaes - 208 R5
Pons - DS3 R5
Verschueren - DS3 R5
Casier - Fiesta R5
Cherain - Fiesta R5
Loix - Fabia S2000
Lappi - Fabia S2000
Wiegand - Fabia S2000
Simpson - Fabia S2000
Gryazin - Fiesta S2000
Kobus - Fiesta S2000
Vanneste - 207 S2000
Debackere - 207 S2000
Vizin - 207 S2000

Let's hope many names can be added... Add up a great field in R4/N4 and (most likely) the best R2-entrylist of the ERC-season, and it should be a great rally. :)

mousti
24th May 2014, 14:04
Some of those will be way more on the limit than the S1600, and the Fiesta is a rubbish car don't know why Coulembier invested in that..

De Cecco, Ingram, Cerny, Lefebvre, Immonen (?) etc. will be crazy fast to get the win or getting points.

tommeke_B

Are you trying to tell me that all those R2 cars are more interesting?

YES! Last year the R2-cars made the Belgian championship worth watching. When you have a strong competition between drivers, it is spectacular to see, it doesn't matter what they drive at that point. This is also a major reason why I like going to France to see rallies. What you see from drivers in the trophies there (208 cup at the moment, DS3, 207, C2 and Saxo trophies in the past) is amazing!

Some video from last year's BRC with the R2's.

So it's a problem of drivers, not the cars. If the drivers like Cerny, Lefebvre, Immonen were driving S1600 cars, they would have been even faster :)

Filip
24th May 2014, 21:41
You are right, but not so many drivers could afford S1600 cars so the level of competition would be lower and we would end up watching 2 or 3 drivers fighting for victory and a bunch of gentleman drivers who aren't attractive at all. :)

Kevin Demaerschalk had engine problems and retired early in Wallonie, no need to compare the Fiesta R2 with the 208 R2 either (it's like comparing a GrN and GrA car). For me he is one of the favorites in the R2-class in Ypres, if anyone can beat Lefebvre (who is probably a future WRC-star).

mousti
25th May 2014, 22:25
That was what I was thinking because he was consistently slower than Radoux in the Fiesta Trophy, Radoux is also a good and fast driver but Demaerschalk with his talent and experience should be atleat as fast like him eventhough Radoux knows the stages very good.

Yes, it is. For example stage Heuveland has several very long straights with up to 30 seconds in rpm limiter each. In the past Škoda was benefiting from higher top speed than Peugeot and Ford in Ypres a lot (for some strange reason they didn't use long gearbox in Greece). Two years back there was a video with speed gun from one such straight and Van den Heuvel with R4 Evo made over 210 km/h there...

Mirek
5th June 2014, 09:49
Maybe they would need to change the programming? The PDK was originally invented for motorsport use and DSG is working on fundamentally same principle. I admit I have never driven stock DSG but I can believe it might sometimes pre-shift up while You need shift down or vice versa as the automatics doesn't see the road in front of the car. It just follows the user when he is accelerating to high rpm it pre-shifts higher gear.

Can't be that hard to disable the automatic shifting surely and just use the paddles?

Historic shakedown is on different place in different time. Normal shakedown starts with this stupid format of qualify, so first you will see 3x all priority drivers and then the rest. And there are spectators tickets in Ypres.

Last year first was free runs of priority drivers. Each one twice and than qualification. That was with 2 minutes gap I think. After that normal shakedown for all crews except priority drivers continued for another maybe three hours. I don't remember exactly. Bad thing was that due to the qualification the priority drivers did only three passes each.

You can not disable automatics with double clutch gearbox. It always have two gears shifted in the same time and operates via those two clutches. They key is to have correct gear pre-shifted at the second clutch however that is difficult to automatize for racing use. I don't know how exactly Porsche PDK had it done. I guess normally the system pre-shifts higher gear if You keep accelerating and pre-shifts lower gear if You are braking or if the rpm goes down.

Craig confirmed he is very focused on his ERC championship ambitions and what he along with the Peugeot Rally Academy team have to achieve as they head to Belgium on a quest for their second win in this year’s FIA ERC, saying, “There is no denying that the last two outings had very disappointing conclusions and its vital that we take away good points from Ypres.”

Leaving nothing to chance Craig and his Peugeot Rally Academy team-mate Kevin Abbring took part in a two day development test recently for Peugeot Sport in an effort to get the maximum from their 208 T16’s on this very specialist event. Organised by their Saintéloc Racing run team the Peugeot pair will also have a one day set-up test on a road similar to that of the rally this week where final adjustments can be made.

The only possible explanation is that Škoda doesn't give s.h.i.t. about the result of said duo. It's either because they fully concentrate on R5 or because they expect "privateer" Loix to beat the two official crews anyway.

My guess is that they they know Loix will be faster (don't forget Loix is the main Škoda test driver) and actually if a "privateer" manage to win on their "outdated S2000" it could help to sell the last remaining cars. It's a kind of risk to stake all on one card, sure...

Breen will be well happy to be quickest of the favourites despite making a mess of the start...

But I dont suppose its so important this being a tarmac event. I guess he'll pick an early starting position in case of rain.

Find it hard to understand why not to pick first start position: if you are first there is no dirt on road from cutting (you hear that every year in ypres), certainly when it has rained. Second, if it starts raining you have more chance for a dry stage since you start earlier. What am I not seeing? :-)

Even with 5min penalty he can reach top5. Was it not due to motor chance he got this penalty?

Quite a lot of grass in the wheels again. "Brilliant, we are having a lot of fun. I tried to push on the first stage a little bit to find the limit of the tyre. On this one I am backing off a little. The balance of the car is nice."

Mousse is long time banned.
Brake pipe broke because of puncture. That happens quite often when you have such a big puncture that you finish the stage without any rubber. Small mistake, but costs a lot. This is Ypres, this is rally.
