It's true that Juho's experience in Portugal is limited. In 2008 he did the shorter IRC variant in production Evo IX, in 2011 he started with Fabia S2000 but actually didn't do much of stages as he broke wheel in two legs and that's all...

What an impressive first day! Good to see some pace from Hyundai, including Neuville proving that it wasn't a fluke with a stage win too. Interesting Sordos comment about needing more power. Given he has driven almost all the current field of factory cars I imagine he would know exactly how much they are behind Citroen and Ford at least.

Great to see Tanak proving he has still got it, I hope this helps to groom him for potentially replacing Mikko later on if he can find some consistency. I imagine his sponsors will be pretty happy with his work so far!

VW won't be so happy, going from 1,2,3 to 3rd and 8th only.

Good to see Mikko picking up and taking his opportunities, but what is going to happen tomorrow? I really hope he can at least have a proper battle with Ogier, rather than his recent tendancy to back down from a fight. I think he needs this to get the confidence just like JML did (not that that has ended well!).

And the weirdest stat for the day that I can see? Hyundai are the only team to have all their cars still on the road at the end of the first day... How odd is that?

Ohh and good on Al-Attiyah for making things interesting in WRC2! I have always thought he was a good driver, but for some reason he never seems to have come to grips with the WRC cars the same way as he has driven WRC2 cars in the past?

Surely VW make their own roll cage though, so just like M-Sport they are allowed to repair it in some situations? Also, if it's forward of the interior there is a chance it's not safety critical necessarily. So may well mean it's easier to repair, or not as important potentially.

No, Kenneth Eriksson in an Accent WRC was leading the Rally New Zealand in 2001 after the first day: http://www.ewrc-results.com/results.php?e=103&s=1884&t=Propecia-Rally-New-Zealand-2001
Of course Eriksson was leading due to tactics, but still he did.

That were real rallies and there were a lot of manufacturers and the level of drivers was much higher than now. It is so predictable, with Meeke, Kubica and Latvala crashing and we know since 10 years the champion even before the WRC season begins...

Not really top spots, but they earn their seats and aren't paying for it (except Kubica maybe). What I'm trying to say is that the level of competiton has improved and there are more genuinely fast drivers. You can't judge about Evans yet this year.
