The crowds have been pretty impressive - however, it's still not popular enough to get any mainstream TV/ newspaper coverage.
I was in Dyfi today and saw it happen, it looked like Kubica was going too fast, got sideways on the greasy surface, and off down a Welsh hillside. I'm not surprised he's not driving tomorrow - they'll have a job getting the car out. I think Citroen have let Robert down; first time in GB, first time in a WRCar, and first event with a new co-driver; hardly a recipe for success, is it?

Have been a regular guest on here for a while but thought it was about time to register. Having been out on the stages the past the few days, i have to say theres been a huge noticeable buzz back about the event and a good atmosphere on the stages. Credit to the organisers for finally making some much needed 'positive' changes to halt the decline of this rally. Theres still alot of work to do to try get the rally back to anything near its hayday but its been very enjoyable. Gutted that i have to travel back upto scotland tonight and miss the final day of action :(

Just got back from a couple of days rallying - saw Hafren and Dyfi and was very impressed by the number of spectators at both. Great viewing at Hafren especially, though seeing Kubica's crash at Dyfi made the adrenaline pump a bit - looked much worse in person. Looking at some of the times I'm impressed by Mikkelsen and agree with err88 that he could be a big challenger next season. Mikko looked good in person yesterday, and Ogier was a level above much like Loeb used to be when I've seen him in the past. Cave, Evans and Pryce all flying the flag proudly too for our fine Isles! All in all, a great rally and gutted I can't be there tomorrow.

Morrow is from Northern Ireland and came first in the UK Evo Challenge championship in 07 (I think) with the prize being a Mitsubishi UK supported drive for the following season. Unfortunately it didn't go well and Mitsubishi controversially dropped him midway through the season.
Has made a comeback this season and would've more than likely become Irish forestry champion if he hadn't opted to do RGB instead.
Was once regarded as a very good prospect (and perhaps still is) and is certainly a very talented driver. If he had the backing/budget things may well have been different for him.

Yeah i remember watching him out on the stages at rally scotland in 2010 and 2011. He certainly feels at home in the uk forests :). At the start of the year i had unrealistic expectations of him. @Danon:
Neuville hardly spoke any French 5,5 years ago. Now his codriver is French-speaking, and so are his notes.
Mikkelsen has a Finnish codriver and English notes.
Petter Solberg managed to become world champion with English notes.
Henning Solberg did more than a season with Ilka Minor, and some events with Stéphane Prévot, English notes, if the impact of another language would've been so big he would've found a Norwegian codriver, right?
And if we go back in history we can find plenty examples (such as Kankkunen).
You don't require a rich vocabulary to understand notes in other languages (left, right, some numbers and additions like crest, jump, caution, etc.).
So, please don't blame the language for Kubica's crashes. :)

It hard to say that Ogier is better than Loeb. Yes, he has the best car this year and almost no rivals. Loeb is doing mainly circuits and when you are out of rally rhythm, it is not so easy...

Polo s are by far the best/fastest cars. Citroen and Ford drivers need to take more risks to get the Polo s times.
I do not believe this anymore. Since Neuville has shown the pace of the Ford on tarmac, where Ford was always the slowest on tarmac, I just don't believe that the Ford was that much slower than the Citroen, if at all, over the past years.
After Loeb came Ogier and they are simply the fastest around. They don't make mistakes often and they are masters. Guys like Latvala and Hirvonen just miss the last edge to get it. Gronholm was different I think, he had more speed.
Something that plays too is confidence. If you can adapt to the car, or setup the car that it adapts more to you, you'll be able to creat confidence and go faster.

Great performance by Mikkelsen! Great to see ex-IRC drivers growing in the WRC.
In my opinion he is the biggest disappointment in the WRC this year.
Don't forget that Mikkelsen has droven this rally already a couple of times.
Not at all. It takes a lot of time to develop a mature WRC-driver. Look at Ogier, how many C4's did he crash and I don't recall him doing a lot of fastest times these days. He was just playing with Novikov if I recall correctly.

Stage1 was not absolute winning too. They hardly wanted to make a change at FIA, but it is not so easy to prepare compact system for it, especially with split times (which I hate - for the crews into the car, not for spectators).

Just returned from WRGB and I must say the spectating experience was much improved over recent years.
The night stages were great, and returned an essential ingredient of our round of the WRC to the schedule (rallying at night is unbeatable). I don't know if it was an 'official' strategy, but the marshals were far more relaxed about spectators walking into the stages than previously which helps in so many ways, principally by spreading people out and giving everybody chance to see the action.
It seems the spectator stages went down well with the public from the reports I've seen which has to be a positive thing overall.
My only criticisms would be.
1. The stages finish too early in the day, there should be at least 1 night forest stage at the end of each leg in addition to what is currently in the schedule. Going to a service park is not action. Rally fans want to be in forests watching these guys going flat out.
2. Many marshals did not know what they were doing, which was both frustrating and dangerous. Don't get me wrong I more than appreciate them giving the time to do it, but there must be some form of training to allow them to do it safely. Blowing the whistle too early being the principle problem, when spectators loose confidence in the whistle, they will ignore them...
So overall a great improvement. (many thanks to my friend who supplied the official stage maps allowing better viewing)

This has been an absolute farce. The FIA quite frankly dont seem to give a sh*t about the sport - in my eyes. What is the point in change for changes sake? Stage 1 had it flaws but they were a hell of alot better than these buffons. I know wrc teams shouldn't be allowed to have the final say on most important decisions but the fact the teams really wanted the previous timing company to remain this year- as did numerous rallies if i remember for safety reasons aswell, should have rung a few bells at the FIA . Its an embarresment we have to wait 4 or 5 hrs for official results. FIA needs to gets a grip and sack these muppets or just leave our sport alone and f*ck off and concentrate further on their beloved F1. Rant over ;)

Information processing in a mother tongue is a weapon and advantage with no substitute!!!
why Ogier is co-driven by a french speaking co-driver
why Loeb was co-driven by a french speaking co-driver
why Latvala is co-driven by a Finnish speaking co-driver
why Hirvonen is co-driven by a Finnish speaking co-driver
why Sordo is co-driven by a Spanish speaking co-driver
why Neuville is co-driven by a compatriot
Why, WHY, W H Y...
Neuville is codriven by a compatriot, but notes are not in Neuville's native language, wich is German. :D
@Danon:
First WRC event - Italian co-driver speaking Italian pacenotes to a polish guy in a french team!!!
I am pretty sure any other polish co-driver would've take him to the final. At least.
Money-mix, money-makes, money-takes!
Not agree. I was expecting that Kubica crashed in this rally. He even can't finish an ERC event, why he should finish a WRC event in his first time with a WRC car than?

Sure there had been exceptions back in rally history but statistics show the majority of wins/winners/champions speaking their native language prevail over the non mother tongue speaking ones.
An advantage reflecting the speed of perception and processing the information faster.

You cannot compare Sébastien Loeb to anybody else. He is exception in the rally history, he didnt have enough rivals on same level (especially in last years)...

There's no need to do any maths:
Question: Can one be very fast with notes in another language than his mother tongue?
Answer: Yes.
No need to do anything else. More than that, don't you think that Robert knows better than you if Italian notes suit him well? If they don't, he'll get a Polish co-driver next year, I don't think he's obliged to drive with English or Italian notes.

And I will take it also from another point of view - he was crashing this year both with polish and italian pacenotes :angryfire

No one can convince me the mother tongue is not an advantage!
All I wanted to point out is the advantage it gives in extreme situations when the speed of processing the information is decisive factor and could take you out of trouble in a star trek bit of a second faster.

So your saying I should take my notes in Welsh. Im Welsh, I live in Wales. But I speak English. So I see a big crash coming up for me.
Am I right in thinking Kubica native language is Italian

I do believe using your native language can be disadvantage, if notes are hard to pronounce (i.e. words are long or not expressive). Depends on the language.

Yes. There are some Belgian drivers who speak Dutch but prefer their notes in French. Also there are many Dutch drivers who have a Belgian codriver and use several notes that aren't really Dutch, but come from Belgium. To give another example there is Matthias Boon, he drove with Dutch, French and English notes, and was just as fast with all of them.

All the top drivers were flat through there, the first driver to noticeably brake was Barrable in the R5 Fiesta!
Most spectacular was Sordo who really pitched the car hard right before flinging it to the left :bounce: :bounce:
It was such a good spectator spot it made the R3 DS3 look spectacular, and its one of my least liked cars in rally!

According to a post on a different forum the marshal was only there because he had to keep moving idiots away from that position. He maintained his presence there to prevent re-occupation of the space, fortunately he was alive to the problem!
Having been to a number of different WRC events in Europe I am sure that the UK marshalling is among the best there is (can't comment on how good Sweden and Finland are). What amuses me is the way in which guys who get to near the top of the organisation tree feel the need to pedal the party line on spectator access etc.

His channel has right now 5,186,510 views. I'm pretty sure You can find plenty of "normal" media with less attention among the accredited.
I don't see anything wrong about giving him an accreditation. He makes more for rallying popularity than large percentage of the "normal" media.

After recovering for a day from a VERY exhausting Wales Rally GB. We managed to see a lot of action SS1,6,9 (finally made it to Pikes Peak section of Myherin thanks to tip by Mintexmemory), 10,12,14,17,20,21 plus the national event in SS6,14,20,21. The increase in spectator numbers led to some seriously long walks from car parks. Marshals' behaviour was a bit more relaxed compared to other years. What surprised me in Myherin, in the first 3-4km we walked in, there was not a single marshall (???)
Competition-wise the rally was boring with no great interest. No driver made a big difference in driving by eye
Ogier when he was pushing the first day was very sideways but under control, in day 3 and 4 he was nothing special to watch though.
Latvala and Evgeny were unusually tidy with their driving.
I was expecting more by Thierry and some more on the limit driving, but probably took it easy to secure 2nd place.
Dani was taking his usual Loeb-style lines but the times were not there.
I didn't find the Fiesta R5 boring as most of you say. The sound is not the best but I don't remember the S2000 cars to be any more exciting to watch.
Some moments from the event worth noting:
During the starting order selection Mikko was looking really miserable walking through the service park, he usually is smiley and joking around.
Bryan Bouffier has an off in SS6 in front of us, that's why he lost approx 2 min.
At the service after SS3, the Ford mechanics were making a lot of effort to fix Thierry's car after he hit that rock. MW was there all the time and looked tense. They even send the car out to park ferme without sumpguard (they removed the gbox and put it back in) as they were marginal with time.
In SS10 we managed to sneak into the starting line (forbidden in Rally GB) and the way VW sound when switching to stage mode is really fearsome, very different to the rest of cars. When switched on the engine sounds to suck in a lot of air very vigorously and then calm down 1-2s before launch. Andreas had it on for 25-30s and sounded even more aggressive than Ogier's and Latvala. My bro have some videos of it, hopefully I will upload later and share with you.
Also all the VWs when stopped they always had steam coming out of their bonnet.

Quote:
CO-DRIVER SWITCH HURT CHANGES
The Pole admitted the tricky Welsh conditions were difficult, but it was the switch of co-driver that caused him the most upset on what should have been a landmark moment in his short rally career.
Kubica's regular co-driver Maciek Baran decided not to compete in Wales and when the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix winner could not find another Polish navigator, he took Italian Michele Ferrara.
Although Kubica speaks Italian fluently, he said the language switch made the rally very difficult. His second crash of the weekend was due to a misunderstanding in the notes.
"When you have very little time to know each other and everything comes at the last moment, you know it can be the a risk - but I tried not to think about it," he said.
"If you ask me for an expression about how I felt when I knew [about Baran's decision to quit], I was quite scared.
"I said to Maciek that if I continue in rallying then we have to commit to a minimum of three years. But it turned out in 10 months or less his decision was different and it put me in a really difficult situation.
"I don't want to blame this situation, but it didn't help with my debut in the World Rally Car.
"Together, Michele and I had a lot of very hard work. But I am happy with his approach. It wasn't easy, we put a lot of effort in to simplify things [in the notes], but we were not paid back with the best of luck."

My WRGB
Much of what I would have said has been already covered. Ogier dispelling the ‘no good in UK conditions’ myth. Citroen looking like they were after the ‘inability to score in a bordello’ award. Neuville being amazingly quick in conditions that he had only as much experience of as Kubica, I suppose a settled co-driver helps! Elfyn doing his growing reputation no harm.
I’d set myself the target of attending the whole event on a tight budget so my routes, and hence the stages I attended, were carefully worked out and as a result of not using any of the official car parks ;) I had to walk 20 miles in total over the four days of the rally. I found a very good walker’s hostel in Corris and had I known about it before booking the Travelodge near Deeside I’d have gone there overnight on the Thursday. The back road in Corris main street leads 1.5km to Dyfi stage.
Llandegla was not for the purist with its lack of real spectacle, but at least you could see 3 passes from all the WRC field with some nice sideways moments. As I always say miss Shakedown and you could miss seeing one of the contestants entirely – it was the only place I saw Kubica clearly (though he must have passed in the dark of Gwydyr)
Gwydyr was atmospheric and took me back in time, I was standing at the priority media junction so all the WRC cars were lit by many flashguns going off
Finally made it to the Pikes Peak section of Myherin, worth the trek and I’ll definitely go back in future.
On Saturday I went to the regroup in Corris where rally crews appeared to outnumber spectators giving some previously unknown level of access for photograph signings.
Spectacular drive over the hills to Dyfnant followed for Saturday / Sunday spectating. I decided that as I was on my own I’d skip Great Orme in favour of watching more at Dyfnant before the 4hr drive back to London.
Final impressions
Some people undergo personality change the moment a hi-vi tabard is worn
Wales’ autumn colours were fabulous this year
R5 is alright by me
Funny how all the Poles had disappeared by Sunday
Rallying is one of the best vehicles for promoting pan-european harmony – Talking to a boisterous crowd of Lithuanians in Gwydyr, one said to me how welcoming the rally was to foreigners. I agreed, pointing out that I didn’t speak the local language either!
