The Euskaltel-Euskadi (http://www.cyclingnews.com/teams/2013/euskaltel-euskadi) team has confirmed reports that have appeared in the Spanish press this morning saying that Ferrari’s Formula 1 star Fernando Alonso has reached an agreement to take over the team

Well now we know what he's going do when he retires. Most ex F1 drivers go to Rallying, Sportscars etc, but not old Fernando, nooooooo, he's retiring straight to the big leagues :p :

I was born in Bilbao, which means Euskaltel-Euskadi is a big deal for me. I was so sad when the team announced they were going to call it quits because they lost their sponsorship, Euskaltel. Hearing that Alonso was going to save the team, made my day, but then I read he was moving the team to Asturias, which means he will probably Euskadi will not be part of the name anymore, or the Basque flag will not be part of the jerseys, which pretty much means the same to us fans, the team we knew is pretty much death.

I am sorry for you jarrambide as I understand what you mean, but it is good to see he cares for a sport he claims to love and helps to keep a team alive.

Well lets face it, the region is no worse off because of the Alonso deal, especially if they were going to close anyway.

He didn't do anything bad, on the contrary, this is better than having the team banish in thin air, but I went from thinking everything was back to normal to saying bye to the team again.

Rumours are the Contador is going to be their lead rider next year as he's good friends with Alonso.

He's still got a contract with Saxobank IIRC, so Fernando would have to shell out another load of money to buy out Berties contract. And what would it really help? Since returning from his doping suspension, Contador is a mere shadow of his former self and would mainly just coast into retirement. According to the announcement I read so far, the new team is to be built around Samu Sanchez, which would mean they would concentrate on the spring classics and other one-day races. Contador would be out of his depths there as he is a tour specialist.

I wonder about the timing and circumstances though. Alonso could have gotten hold of a WT license for less than the 6M he shelled out for Euskatel. I wonder if that spat with LdM was more than a temporary misunderstanding and the buyout could already be an investment in a future after F1. It wouldn't be the first time that Ferrari sacks a top class driver, who publicly criticised the team.

It's reported in the Spanish media, so should be treated with extreme caution.

But, if - if - true, then it does suggest that a fall-out between Alonso and his current employers might have been overplayed by wish-fulfilment fantasists.

The fallout didn't happen between Alonso and the team's sponsors - it happened with the team's personnel. You're mixing up a few things here. Obviously the management isn't yet ready to sack him, but his recent criticism will impact the people within the team, especially now that the other half of the garage is occupied by the last man to actually win something for them. So, if you were a team mechanic or engineer, who would your loyalty be with? The man who won a title for you or the man, who criticised you publically while getting beaten by a German in a lemonade can each year?

Personally I would do the job they hired me for, and have a thick enough skin not to let comments made in frustration affect my productivity, because I value my job....But that is just me.

a German in a lemonade can
To be fair I think it should be pointed out that:
He (Fred), along with everyone else in F1 including Kimi, were beaten by a German in a lemonade can designed by a brilliant Englishman.
What a freakin' soap opera this has turned into....I love it!
May the forza be with both of them.

Seriously? You'd put in endless hours for something you love (I suppose many Ferrari folk have a wee bit more passion for their job than just a means to put food on the table) - and all you get for it is public criticism and it wouldn't affect you?? :dozey:

Do I really have to point out all the perks of working for Ferrari F1 :dozey:
How do you know what Fred says to these freakin' guys when they are interacting? How can you say "that is all you get”, unless you are in on their personal conversations. You have no authority in this arena. I'm guessing these guys are not that freakin' sensitive to sh^t being stirred up by the tabloid press.
Got any more conspiracy theories?
Dream on McDuff!
