I haven't seen muggle not back on the boards since the changeover, but in recognition of the largest thread on the old MSF boards I thought I would start this thing back up.

I'm sure everyone remembers the premise and rules of the thread, but if not a refresher. Limit questions to NASCAR Cup based trivia, the person who answers the last question poses the next, etc.

To get things started again...

A question in light of Toyota's upcoming entry into NASCAR.

Dodge's return to Winston Cup racing in 2001 after a 15 year abscence netted them how many wins their first season back? What finishing position in the season standings was their top driver that year?

4 Total (Sterling Marlin = 2 wins, Ward Burton & Bill Elliott 1 win each)

What finishing position in the season standings was their top driver that year?
Sterling Marlin - 3rd in Winston Cup Points

jayski.com tells that Ricky Rudd is returning to Robert Yates Racing for 2007.
It further states that the #28 will return with Rudd to replace the #88.

The trivia question is :
What is the highest in Cup points standings did Ricky Rudd ever finish ?

Jonesi

I'll continue with the Toyota entering Cup theme, sort of ;-)
For many years Nascar Cup has been all US big 3 manufacterers (GM, Ford, Chrysler).

What non-big 3 marque has the most Cup wins?
What year was the last win for them?

djarumdudley

AMC and 1975?

Jonesi
12th December 2006, 00:37

No. That was the most recent win by a non Big 3, but there's a manfacturer with a lot more wins than AMC Matador's 5.

First, a thank you to Hoss for starting the Nascar Trivia thread back up. Hoss and RFS have been two of the biggest supporters of the thread and are also two of the members playing it the longest.

I have been absent from most Forums for about a month except for infrequent postings. We recently sold our house in Virginia and have moved to North Carolina. It is taking us much longer to get all settled in than we expected but we should be OK soon.

Again, thanks Hoss......and on with the Trivia.

Haven't gotten the go ahead, but I can't imagine my answer was wrong, so...As we're waiting for the new race season to begin. There was a time that the season didn't begin with the Daytona 500.
When & where was the last race that preceded the Daytona 500 to start the season? Who won?

The original purpose of this thread was to ask questions that presented interesting NASCAR information.
It was for sharing information about NASCAR history & statistical facts.
The answers were easy to find after doing a little research.
The questions were never intended to stump anyone.

The guidelines regarding trivia questions were few :
1. Questions about NASCAR Winston/Nextel Cup ONLY
2. Answers had to be verified by a source if someone questioned the correct answer
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This thread used to be fun.
Lately it has become a quest to ask questions that require complex researching.
It has changed from a sharing of information to a stump the forum competition.

My interest in this thread has expired because :
I refuse to spend the time to do the excessive research to find an answer.
I have other things to do, there is life outside this thread. http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/tongue-anim.gif

You are correct, none other than Rusty Wallace.

A quote:

Another description of the run:
Rusty zipped between cars in the heavy morning traffic when there was no apparent place to zip. He drove between lanes, looking for air. He cut through parking lots, passed in turn lanes, found holes where there weren`t any. Once, a truck started to pull out of a side street in front of us and even Rusty admitted later he thought that might be the end of this cannonball run, but the truck stopped and let us slip by. And I`m sitting there going, ``Ooh, watch that truck . . . Oh, no . . . Look out for, oh, no . . . Ooh, wow, that was close . . . ``

We bounced into the WRFX lot 24 minutes after we started. That`s about 15 or 20 minutes faster than you can make it in the morning if you don`t have Rusty at the wheel. And 18 minutes faster than John Boy and Billy made it.

IIRC Shorty Rollins won the convertible only qualifier, and Welborn won the Grand National qualifier. The 500 itself was a "mixed" race with Lee Petty winning in a GN car. I guess technically, if a convertible had won the Daytona 500, there would have been no Grand National Daytona 500 winner. I also think Richard Petty drove that first 500 in a convertible.

Nascar ran a convertible series for 6 or seven years I think.

2001 Jeff Gordon 5112
2003 Matt Kenseth 5022

All though 2001 and 2003 are more of a product of the 36 race schedule than the domination of the 34 race schedules of '99 & '00 & 33 races in '98. Cale's would be the most impressive domination since they only ran 30 races in '77. Second would be Jeff's '98 run...even though Ray soaked the tires.

FYI 1974 was not modern. It was a funky system involving multipliers based on # of starts etc. The ridiculousness of it was exposed when Darrell Waltrip finished 2nd at Darlington, and Richard Petty finished 35th, but Richard got more points than Darrell. Richard was champion with 10 wins so no one will say he didn't deserve the championship, but it was one bizarre system that no one understood.

No prob! My bad for missing BLabs since that was the start of his championship run. Hadn't DJ been so far ahead, BLabs would have made a strong run in '99 for the title considering how well he ran late in the season.

"It fired up, I told the guy to get out, then told the ambulance guy to unhook me. I've got to go.
"We took off after them. You've got to get all the laps you can. That's what we're running the championship for."

Texas is 509 miles and Daytona is 508 miles. I sure don'y know of any that are longer......with the exception of Lowes.

jonesi seems to have abandoned the Trivia.

Anyone, ask a question.

Who was the first Driver to win races in both Cup and Indianapolis type cars?
Who was the most recent?

note: Indy type cars are AAA/USAC/CART/IRL/ChampCar, I am not including NASCAR's speedway division that ran in the 50's. Cup indicates top level division starting in 1949, not Busch series (so no guessing Montoya unless he wins at Pocono this Sunday. ;) )

Kasey Kahne is probably the most recent. I'll have to think some on the first though...

Kasey Kahne has never started an Indy/Champ race. He did race some Atlantics, but no wins there either.

O.K., I just read the question real quick and thought you meant sprint cars as well when I saw USAC.

Tony Stewart is the most recent I can think of.

I'll guess Parnelli Jones, I know he won in NASCAR in the 50's.

Tony Stewart is probably the second most recent, and Parnelli was probably the second to accomplish the feat, keep trying.

Duh, forgot about Robby Gordon, I think he had 2 wins in Cart before coming to NASCAR.

I'll leave the second part open to someone else, I can't come up with anyone else off the top of my head.

Robby Gordon is correct, I'll give a hint on the other. He used his knowledge of tire wear to gain his only Nascar win.

Robby has three wins ;)
