Dick Rathmann

Dick Rathman, brother of 1960 Indy 500 winner Jim Rathman, won 13 times in Nascar, but unfortunately never finished higher than 3rd in an Indy/Champcar event. Keep trying.

Johnny Mantz, inauguaral Southern 500 winner?

DJ's got it! Johnny Mantz won at the Milwaukee Mile in 1948 (It was still dirt then) and had raced at Indy in 1948 and 1949. He was the slowest qualifier for the first Southern 500 starting 43rd in a car partially owned by Bill France. He knew tire wear would be a problem on an asphalt track so he mounted different tires than any of his competitors (I've read where it was truck tires or possibly even Indy type tire) He had less problems than the others, and ran away with the race.

I guess either you or Hoss can go next since both of you got half of the question.

Mantz used truck tires and never changed tires during the whole race.

In Cup yes, I know. 2 of which were great, knocking Gordon out of the way for his first, and schooling/snookering Harvick at Sears Point.

I was refering to his wins in CART.

he didn't snooker Harvick, they were goin back to the caution and passed him breaking anything that was left of the gentlemans agreement, but Robby still would've passed Harvick that day even if under green

Let me clarify, I mean how many years have gone by between there being back-to-back champions(Drivers). In other words...whoever is the next to go back-to-back will bookend with Jeff Gordon as the two most recent drivers to do so, setting a record. What is the current longest streak. Name the drivers.

muggle not

5 years ....Buck Baker to Joe Weatherly

5 years ....Joe Weatherly to David Pearson.

These have been the longest gaps between drivers that have won back-to-back Championships............except of course the present gap when the last time was when Jeff Gordon won back to backs with the last of the B to B in 1998.

There have been 15 rookie-of-the-year award winners who have never won atop division race, or 17 if you include Ken Rush and Blackie Pitt who were unofficial rookies of the year before NASCAR started the official award in 1958.
They were:
Kenny Irwin
Mike Skinner
Jimmy Hensley
ROb Moroso
Dick Trickle

Ronnie Thomas
Skip Manning
Bruce Hill
Larry Smith
Walter Ballard

I'll stay with the same theme, but with a twist.

Juan Pablo Montoya will probably be this year's rookie of the year, but if he had come up in the 60's, he would not have been eligible because of his previous CART championship.

Using that knowledge, Name the driver who won the most races in his "rookie" year.

Dick Hutcherson in 1965 with 9 victories and a second place points finish. but according to Nascar's rules at that time he was ineligible due to being the previous season's IMCA champion. champions from rival series were deemed ineligible for ROTY in those days.

Wow! I was just looking for a number. But from one DJ fan to another (assuming you are a DJ fan?)...you are short a few! :D

yeah pretty sure i missed several. think i got most of his full time owners in there. i was a huge fan of Jarrett's in the 90s, especially during his emerging years with the Woods and Gibbs. my fandom fell off when my all time fave Ricky Rudd arrived at Yates in 2000. there was little though in my mind who i felt should have been number one there!

tstran17_88

1986 Mike Curb
1987 Eric Freedlander
1988 Hoss Ellington, Cale Yarborugh (in 1989 also), Ralph Ball & Buddy Arrington
