If I have been travelling in an easterly direction along a road that ends at a statue called the "Mask of Sorrow", what is the name of that road?

That's a different road, although I dare say the conditions would probably be the same on the Kolyma highway.

It's called the "Road of Bones" as the permafrost made it too difficult to dig graves for those poor souls that died constucting it.

I think Mark is on the road for several days so I am taking the liberty of another set of questions. They are all water related.
1 What is the Great Circle Cruise for pleasure boats?
I do not expect details but naming some of the bodies of water would be a bonus. There are several possibilities on parts of the cruise. Those who have done it are entitled to fly a special flag.
2a What is the largest freshwater island in the world?
2b In what body of water is it located?
3a In what freshwater body of water is the Sleeping Giant located?
3b What is the closest town or city?
4a In what freshwater body of water is the Giant's Tomb located.
4b What is the closest town or city?

I will take either of 2 answers as correct for 4b.
Both 'Giants' are islands.
I hope this is more difficult than the last one.

Hi All. I am back after spending a few months on the Dark Continent.
Almost forgot about this thread.
Easy Drifter-a little friendly advice.. You're not going to get many responses with questions so closely associated with your home area....this is a global forum. It's like asking someone from Australia or S Africa who their favorite character is on Corner Gas...they'll just scratch their heads and look at you funny. As for your questions, having friends and family in your area, I'll take a shot:
1- Great Circle cruise is either a navigation of the American inland waterway system, but more likely a cruise of lakes and canals in S Ontario.
2- Has to be Manitoulin, in Lake Huron. A friend has a cottage there where you can see an island in a lake which is on a island which is in a lake.
3- The Sleeping giant is in Lake Superior near Thunder Bay
4- Giant's Tomb is near Penatanguishine in Georgian Bay

Easy Drifter
18th January 2009, 16:50
2,3 and 4 are correct.
1 is pretty close.
Starting point can be anywhere on route.
I will use NYC as start. Up Hudson River, Erie Canal, Lake Ontario, Trent Severn, Georgian Bay/Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Chicago Ship Canal, Mississipi System, Alternate routes to Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic to NYC. There are several palces where alternate routes can be used.
Does not have to be done in one year.
Your turn.
If I do ask another question later it will be in Canada but far removed from this area.

What River flows through it?
Into what body of water does the river empty into?

The only "canyon" in the east that I can think of is Ausable Chasm in New York (I think it's a stretch to call it a canyon :s ), a popular stop for Quebecers on route for a day of fun at Plattsburg beach on Lake Champlain.
Closest two cities: Dunno, Plattsurg is probably one; can't think of the other.
River: No idea; I'll guess the Ausable River :D
I believe it empties into Lake Champlain.

Its' pint sized cousin is also familar to any racing fans who went into town at Watkins Glen. A small canyon right off the main drag in Watkins Glen state park is a nice little hike and a diversion when you go there for the racing. The classic racing circuit that was based on the roads in the area basically drove around it.

You got it Mark. I expected you would. I don't know where our 'New Yawkers' were. It is about 60 miles from both Buffalo and Rochester. 3 good sized waterfalls at North end and a large Dam at the South. It is a State Park and quite spectacular. About 17 miles long. If I remember correctly the Canyon is 700 feet deep at one point. Not all that far from Watkins Glen.
Yes, the State Park at the Glen is worth a hike.
We drove the original Glen Circuit. Does take some finding in places. Stone Bridge is something. Must have been a thrill in those 40's & 50's cars along with the 2 level crossings. I remember that they had to time the races between trains.

I don't know the name of waimea canyon but it is by some mountain that is the wettest place on earth or so some claim ( i tend to doubt that as I been to wai'ale'ale and she ain't no wetter than a couple of other mounts i been in.......) I think some say one side is very very dry (yes I have dealt with some of those as well) and the other is where they filmed fantasy island king kong and such

The locals claimed Clemens had seen Waimea Canyon and you are right, the Alkali swamp at the top of the headwaters leading onto the canyon drains from the extinct volcano at the center of the island where it is purported to be the wettest place on earth. The hilarious thing is, down 15 miles at the bottom of the canyon on the south shore, it is dry and desert like in spots. I saw cactus for crying out loud!!!

I'm thinking either Toy Pinscher or Toy Terrier

they are a dog breed
they have hair not fur
I dont know if they were called tiny monsters but they were known for their aggression though now they say that through selective breeding they now made them less aggressive.

Since you say donkey jote is close, I will say Pinscher that is from Germany rather than Terrier that is from England.

Somewhere around Halifax Nova Scotia. Wild Guess

The tarantula gets its name from the city of Taranto, a city in southern Italy. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Taranto was hit by a dance craze unlike any other. Many people there were afflicted by an illness called "tarantism," also named after Taranto. This illness was characterized by a hysterical impulse to dance. Some people claimed that tarantism was caused by the bite of the tarantula and they thought that dancing off the venom was the only cure.

Mark in Oshawa knows. He just didn't answer because he was going on the road. We discussed it privately. The port also needs naming. It was a major military establishment in the 1800's with an army garrison.
US Navy did not consider one of them to be a rowboat at the time. The other smaller one was an unarmed supply vessel.
Both are replicas and even the larger one does not now carry guns, except for a saluting 2 pdr. At one time she had a broadside of 6 pdrs. I will not say how many until later.
There were other warships stationed there in the 1800's in addition to the replicas there now. Their guns were removed when Canada and the US signed a Treaty banning warships on the Great Lakes. I believe that was in effect until WW2.

Ain't too many real sailing ships built in the early 1800's still afloat and that can still sail.
The Rush-Bagot Treaty of 1817 limited warships on the great lakes to the maximum of 1 18 pdr. It also limited the number of armed ships on the upper lakes to two from each country.
Today, the US Coast Guard has numerous armed 'Cutters' (some are over 200 feet) on the Great Lakes although all they carry are machine guns.
Both the RCN and the USN often have warships doing visits on the Great Lakes although none are stationed there. There have been visits by the RN but I do not think any other country.
There are several decommissioned warships on the Great Lakes as museums.

History lesson over.

Sorry you feel that way Schmenke. I thought we were having some fun.
So here are my answers:
Discovery Harbour, Penatang, Georgian Bay.
HMS Bee Topsail Schooner.
HMS Tecumseth Topsail Schooner, original armament 6x6lb cannon.
I will now leave this thread. Goodby.

Since Easy done got his feeling hurt :bigcry:

Which of course brought me great

and nobody seems to be trying any more to answer the horse latitude question, I thought i would repeat the hints and add a few more:

so an easy question:

where breed tiny monsters?

Well
Never undertood why it was not fur, but may be it is the lenght

Anyway U B Closer than U Know

Another hint for you donKey, is you....

okay another hint: It ain't true no more

Well it is suppose to be a point of geography which it is, not anatomy where those other little monsters do breed and spring forth

How long does this go, before I just need to give out the answer?

To sum it up, clues to date:
where breed tiny monsters?;
donkey jote is closer than he apparently knows;
hair, not fur; and,
it (the name or reason thereof) is not true anymore (well as a general rule)

And since when was a dog close to being a donkey??

Nay nay naaay

Thinking hair, it got me thinking horse hair? Horse/donkey....kinda similar. I still don't know, but could it be Shetland Ponies? They are tiny, strange and stubborn with riders. That, or Icelandic ponies which are soo cool. I have got 2 guesses in one answer - is that allowed?
Sort of true

you sound like just another lost angel....carefully refined, yet sullen and aborted.......but closer than you think, so sing a lonely song

there appears to be no end to the story of markabilly and his wild hairy ass :erm: :p :

close in time not space

Are we on the subject of ships, or tiny monsters, or

And the answer is blowing in the wind NOT...........duh

I am always serious and I am hung up and hung over over the names of two british rowboats of clearly insignifigant unimportance somewhwere around the great lakes that not even the oshawa boy knows...to be thinking about hints as to where tiny monsters breed, but okay,
have you people no imagination, no perception, that I must open the door to you with more hints?
the reason for the name is no longer true
donKeys and wild hairy asses are close and Caroline is even closer if she were not another lost angel (and that is a double hint) but the white dove sleeps, yet how many years will it take
finally not only where tiny monsters breed but a place of death for those caroline loves most

well now

The Doors.
The answer ain't blowing in the wind cos there ain't no wind.
There breed the tiny monsters.
Chuck the animals overboard, horses and donkeys first.
Booble rules. :erm:

So what's the question? :dozey:

EuroTroll
15th April 2009, 07:20
Can I ask a question?

Ok, thanks! :p :

Now, Russian Federation is a federal republic - it has 83 "federal subjects" of varying degrees of autonomy.

One of these is the Yakutian (Sakha) Republic, which has an area of 3,103,200 sq km (1,198,152.2 sq mi). So roughly the size of India.

 What is the population of the Yakutian Republic?

An error of upto 20% will not be frowned upon. ;)

Why is noone playing my number guessing game? :( It's fun, damn you! :hmph:

'Cause the answer is somewhat surprising! Territory very-very big. Population... oh, I've said too much. :erm: Bugger.

Anyway - guess, bitches! :hmph:

More info on the Yakutian Republic...

 Yakutia is well endowed with raw materials. The soil contains large reserves of oil, gas, coal, diamonds, gold, silver, tin, tungsten and many others. 99% of all Russian diamonds are mined in Yakutia, accounting for over 25% of the world's diamond production.
 Average January temperature: −28 °C (−18.4 °F) (coast) to −47 °C (−52.6 °F) (Pole of Cold).
 Average July temperature: +2 °C (35.6 °F) (coast) to +19 °C (66.2 °F) (central parts).
 The native people - the Yakuts - are of Turkic origin and arrived in the depth of Siberia in the 13th century. (Whereopun they pushed out the indigenous hunter-gatherers.) They are now 45% of the population.
 Yakutia's remoteness, even compared to the rest of Siberia, made it a destination of choice for deportations under both the Czarist and the Communist governments of Russia/Soviet Union.

I for one haven't got a clue.

Oh no. No-no-no. :cheese: The total population of Russia is 142 million, and Yakutia is a remote area. ;) Even though its the size of India.
