If I'm not wrong, Sealand is the continental part of Denmark.

LotusElise
30th August 2007, 21:46
Carl is closest. He can have the next question.

Sealand is an ex-WWII sea defence fort, the size of a big oil rig, which is claimed by a British family (name escapes me!) as their own sovereign country. It's had a little war with Denmark and everything.

Camelopard
30th August 2007, 21:48
Wasn't there a pirate radio staion broadcsting from there as it was outside the UK's territorial limits?
It wasn't Radio Caroline or radio London which I guess were the most well known stations. A quick search shows that some of the stations broadcasting from barges and ships were meant to move here, but this never happened as the laws changed.
Family name is Bates.

LotusElise
30th August 2007, 22:09
The guy who owns Sealand used to own Radio Caroline. There are loads of offshore servers there now.

Here's a quickie for 'ya.

What's a Tower Block and who's got the densest ones? How about the biggest one, Tower Palace, where is it?

Mark in Oshawa
31st August 2007, 04:27
I would guess the Tower of London, and it is a foundation stone? Probably too obvious right?

Caroline

Anything to do with ice, big bergs? I have no idea. Good Q though!

Daniel

I'd say it's about how many skyscrapers there are in an area and at a guess I'd say Hong Kong? :)

schmenke
31st August 2007, 17:11
Is it those big blocks of concrete or steel that are found in the upper floors of skyscrapers, used to dampen the swaying motion in high winds?

schmenke
31st August 2007, 17:12
On second though, why that would be a geo Q is beyond me.... :mark:

I have no clue.

Daniel

I'd say it's about how many skyscrapers there are in an area and at a guess I'd say Hong Kong? :)

Go ahead Daniel! Yep, a Tower Block is a high rise apartment/condo. And you guessed it, Hong Kong has over 60% of its population living in high rise apartments. Seoul, Korea has the highest, fwiw.

That's what it has to do with geography, schmenke. :arrows:  :p :

In what town and country is the world's largest Mud-Brick building? What is this building used for?

edv
15th September 2007, 19:48
I would guess the pyramid of Saqqara outside the ancient city of Memphis in Egypt. Used as a mortuary temple. Lots of mud bricks, just like in Luxor.

I just came back from a European vacation and visited a city that claims to have the deepest locks in all of Europe at 105 or 115 feet (depending on which city tour guide you believe). The depth would be the vertical distance the boat goes up or down while in the locks. Name the city.

Not hilly, huh?
Must be a lock at a dam, then.
How about figuring the river first? The Danube?

OK Now it is time to show your love for FUNICULARS!

http://images.gadmin.ch/13278/images/listitem/Niesen_web.jpg

For those who don't remember, a FUNICULAR is one of those funky inclined railways. I've been on lots of em on 4 different continents.

I want to know the COUNTRY for each of the following FUNICULARS:

Bonus points if you know the location names.

So how about Nigeria for a great mining/tourist destination?

OK, here goes, name the monetary unit of Saint Pierre and Miquelon and name the major unusual thing about these islands.

The French Franc?
They are French Islands in the Canadian Waters. Wierd perhaps because they don't use the Euro?

Camelopard
29th October 2007, 05:01
Not the French Franc, they used to use the CFA which is the unit in most of old French Africa.
They are very close to Canadian waters, off Newfoundland, only a 25km away.

The unusual thing I was thinking off involves the French history of North America.

They are very close to Canada and history wise they are the last part of the former colonial territory called ___ _____ still under _____ control.

Come on Canadians, you should know this and any French members should know this as well!

OK then.....back to my recent trip to the Ukraine. While in the Crimea I saw a small castle close to Yalta. They say it's the most famous castle in the Crimea. It is perched on the edge of a 90' cliff, overlooking the Black Sea. Currently it serves as an Italian restaurant. Name the castle. I'll try to attach a picture, but can't guarantee it'll work as I've never tried before.

I was with a group that did a two week Dnieper River cruise from Kiev to the Black Sea. I only got as close as what the picture I attached shows. We were told that the inside of the building is nothing special, but I did get to tour a couple of other castles closeby that are quite impressive.

Geeze Louise, cossie16. Sounds like your wife & I might be kin! Seventh cousins maybe? Both of my parents are ethnic Germans born in the Ukraine. They came to Canada just after WWII. So the reason I was there was that they took me & my siblings back to show us where they were born.

I know Katherine the Great invited many groups to settle in the Ukrainian Steppes in the 1780's, so the chances are slim, but if your wife's ancestory is Mennonite I would recommend the cruise I was on. Very informative in terms of finding out who your forefathers were, and what they accomplished in this area.

She certainly is a menno, her mother's maiden was Jansen, she was born in Vancouver after her parents went there after end of wwII. Her father isn't a menno though. I did a quick search on the net and found Mennonite Heritage Cruises, am I right in guessing you went with them?
