Australia?
Yes, but I was looking for something a small bit more precise?

schmenke
5th February 2007, 20:00
I have no idea where exactly it is. All I know is that the fence was erected to protect sheep from the wild dingos.

Ok I'm logging off now so I'll give it to you for getting the country right anyway, it is in Queensland by the way.

THat is more History than Geography!!!

That's why I gave it as correct since the answer were geographically correct. :D

Okay. Easy one.

What two countries inhabit the island of Hispaniola?

Mark in Oshawa

Haiti and Dominican Republic

Schultz
14th February 2007, 10:15
Yeh, I thought it was easy.

BrentJackson
14th February 2007, 21:42
Dam, I was gonna answer that one.

OK, I got a good geographic question (well, sorta history, but anyhoo....)

The United States was the first independent nation in the Western Hemisphere, on July 4, 1776. What was the second and when?

walrus81
15th February 2007, 17:19
It should be Mark in Oshawa's turn to give a question.

To yours, I'll guess Paraguay in 1811.

BrentJackson

anyway I think we're assuming only the Americas are in the western hemisphere, actually the first independent nation in the western hemisphere was Spain and the second was Portugal ;)

So is there a new Q, or are we waiting for BJ (why do I giggle every time I write that?) to confirm?

Indeed. Good to see you on the board. But I'm bummed that it wasn't Iceland. I was sooooooo sure!!

Breeze
27th February 2007, 20:00
Sorry Gannex, too late to the party for Iceland. Here's a hint for you. That democracy didn't last much more than a dozen years, and that land is no longer considered an independent nation.

OK. Here's a question.

In Britain, you can never be far from the coast. What's the furthest away you can get? Which town or city (meaning a place with more than 50,000 inhabitants) is furthest from the sea?

LotusElise

Captain VXR

I'd guess Coventry :s

or Rugby

CarlMetro
1st March 2007, 16:15
Lutterworth in Leicestershire is as far from the coast as you can be in the UK, aproximately 71 miles.

Gannex
1st March 2007, 16:18
Right, Jon Brown! Coventry it is.

How far away, approximately, are you from the coast when you're in Coventry?

Brown, Jon Brow
1st March 2007, 16:21
About 120 miles :?:

Gannex
1st March 2007, 17:10
No. Less than 120 miles.

Brown, Jon Brow
1st March 2007, 17:27
Depends if the tide is in or not! :p :erm:

Caroline
1st March 2007, 17:31
60 miles?

Gannex
1st March 2007, 18:08
I'll give you that, Caroline, as sixty miles. The truth is, it depends what you call the nearest point on the coast. If you call the eastern end of the Bristol Channel part of the "sea", then sixty miles is about right.

So by my reckoning, the winners are Jon Brown and Caroline. Do either of you have a question?

Caroline
1st March 2007, 18:35
I'll jump in as long as I am not treading on anyone's toes.

Thor Heyerdahl, the Norwegian adventurer and geographer of sorts, tried to prove that Polynesia was originally populated with the peoples from South America. He made it a fair distance on the raft 'Kon Tiki' with minimal supplies but crashed on a reef in the Pacific Ocean.

Which group of Islands did he reach?

Correct!

Are my questions too easy?

I don't know. I knew the answer cos back in my student years I had a colleague who was living there. Besides, I am very good with african capitals because Ceausescu was always visiting those countries and we were flooded with news and documentaries about his " missions of peace and friendship ". So Mogadiscio, Kinshasa, Ouagadougou, etc., had become quite familiar places.

I can't be here next days so it's fair to let somebody else to ask a new question.

schmenke
2nd March 2007, 22:15
O.k. here's a quick 'n easy...

For what is the James Caird famous?

Gannex
2nd March 2007, 22:34
I reckon the James Caird must be a boat, otherwise why do you call it "the" James Caird. If it's a boat, I'm guessing it's a British merchant vessel, because the boat was named after a Scot, by the sound of the name. Now what could make a British merchant vessel famous? Hmmmm. It was the first ship to be powered by nuclear energy. Or it was the first to be captained by a woman. Or, if I'm allowed three guesses, it was the boat which gave rise to the myth of the Bermuda Triangle when it sank in that area, never to be seen again.

schmenke
2nd March 2007, 22:43
Well Gannex, you got the "boat" part right... :p :

A Scotsman
4th March 2007, 13:06
It was the name of the boat used by Shackleton after the Endurance sank in Antarctica.. There was a TV film about it a few years back. If I remember correctly it's still around.

schmenke
4th March 2007, 17:39
The Scotsman gets it

It's the name of the 22ft lifeboat that Shackleton and his crew of five used to sail from Elephant Island to the tiny South Georgia Islands. A remarkable feat of navigation, 800 miles, considering all they had was a sextant and a compass.

A Scotsman
4th March 2007, 21:10
Yay !! OK here's an easy Scottish one for you...

What's the name of the road that Terry Wogan's good friend (now deceased) Mrs Mackay keeps clear of snow every winter?

CarlMetro
4th March 2007, 21:14
Its the Cotbridge to Tomental road, not sure if I spelt it right and I don't know the road number either.

A Scotsman
4th March 2007, 22:03
Close enough... It's Cockbridge to Tomintoul... Next time I'll ask for the Gaelic translation :D

The UK has a worldwide reputation for drinking tea, and rightly so because we consume 2.3kgs of the stuff per person per year, but we are not the only tea drinkers in the world, in fact it's quite popular in many other countries too, although the UK is the No1. A Lari? So many places have nicknames for their money...I will gues Iran. They had several names for their money, although I cannot remember any of them. There was one official name, but on the street, all denominations were divided by 1,000 and called something else. Probably happens in many countries...
