Motocross is a form of motorcycle racing held on enclosed off-road circuits. The sport evolved from motorcycle trials competitions held in the United Kingdom. Motocross is a physically demanding sport held in all-weather conditions. Motocross first evolved in the United Kingdom from motorcycle trials competitions, such as the Auto-Cycle Clubs's first quarterly trial in 1906 and the Scottish Six Days Trial that began in 1909.

I always understood that motocross evolved from scrambles rather than from trials - in the UK at least.
Can you please clarify this point?

As you know and I know ;)
BTW I was event Safety Officer for the 2005 British Motocross GP at Matchams Park - didn't look like trialling to me (although up in the sheepy parts of the country the competitors would be found doing both forms of competition).
