Who invented tennis? And what is the name for a tennis court employee?

Barry Tennis invented tennis in 1903 in Whitstable. Ever since the court employees have been called "Barry's". There are 3 types of Barry, the Ball Barrys, Line Barry's and the Head Barry, sometimes referred to as the Chair Barry or umpire

I think you'll find it was invented by a Mr Dennis Tennis, who went on to marry Miss Mabel Table. She became Mabel Table-Tennis and later invented her own sport.

A court employee is known as a courtesan.

The seemingly random tennis scoring system was based on angles of stars seen in major constellations and there are many in-jokes about this in the film Star Wars - although there are more Evert, sorry overt, references in the sequel, The Umpire Strikes Back.

Ah.

Was Dennis Tennis a High Court judge? That would explain why there are Tennis Courts. It would also explain if it was a court of arbitration why there are independent umpires as well.

Great to have some new members who really get involved.

At least Chris has all the info he needs.
