In short. Where Andrea?
I like Andrea, I hate to see that she is missing. :s
I think she would have enjoyed the debate about rep. :D
I find it curious as Andrea isn't the only one missing.
I haven't seen Chica or Roselady in a long time.

It always amazes me when people support unethical behavior. I think that says more about them than anything in a profile or autobiography.

I haven't read the whole thread, so someone may already have suggested this, but how about banning negative rep, but allowing positive rep only? Wouldn't that make the whole system a lot friendlier and more fun. The worst that could happen to a poster is that he gets not enough positive rep for his or her liking. Hardly a downer, unlike being barraged by negative rep, as some have been. So ban the reds and allow only greens!

Well if we could turn off the ability for a particular user to see comments that'd be great because inevitably when you look at your user cp you'll usually see it. Got a similarly halfwit derived piece of rep this morning. I don't see why people who are just making pests of themselves shouldn't just get a temp ban or be named and shamed. They're not exactly contributing to the forum are they? :mark:

An interesting idea, but I once received some bad rep which was fair and deserved. The problem is that, as with anything, people mis-use it.

The entire rep system is unethical...
In your view.
...the forum members without character and values who hide behind anonymity.
I assume that would also apply to the vast majority of us here who do not use our full names as a username, or the few who use the forum in 'invisible mode'. They too are "hiding" behind anonymity.
However, that is their choice. Just as using/viewing, or not using/viewing rep is their choice.

Some assessments in ethics may be highly subjective, however there are well established standards. By any of the well established standards, the REP system is unethical, and encourages unethical behavior. Too many threads and complaints document this problem. To suggest that because people who post public messages are hiding behind anonymity is to misunderstand both ethics and ethical standards. The public posts are just that - public, and not dark, dank nasty digs at people -- which is what the REP system, as currently implemented invites and supports.

Harsha, I find the bad rep system amusing, and the support for it rather typical of the overall decay of many aspects of Western Civilization. I've made no "personal attacks." When I have posted anything about ethics and codes of conducts, they have been deleted as "hijacking a thread." Clearly, a discussion of ethics is disturbing to some on the forum. I have identified inconsistencies in the way some members are treated. Rather than being unethical, that is highly ethical. Your post could be construed as a personal attack -- is that your intention?

They should, but in this very thread there's mention of 'forum favourites' based on rep only. It's human nature to judge by certain benchamrks like rep, post count, and so on.
There's some people well into the red that I like very much, some in the green that I'm not so keen on - but I might look at rep to give me clues if I joined a new forum.
I too have had perfectly reasonable negative rep. Unsigned of course, but certainly not sent just for the fun of it.

Following my unerringly accurate prediction that Knockie would be spending some considerable time in the forum hinterland as a result of his somewhat earth shattering disclosures in his Swangsong post yesterday some sparkling bard was moved to send me the following:
"Knock On is a homosexual. Does your support mean that you are one of his lovers?"
Naturally I was outraged at this slur on my sexual predilections and immediately consulted my good friend and forum advocate Gannex for advice on how best to proceed with legal recourse
Sadly he informed me that as Knockie and I are in the habit of spending every other weekend together dancing in Brighton nightclubs before jetting around the world to watch Kylie in concert and that video footage of the 2 of us frolicking in Michael Barrymores hot tub is widely available on the internet any proceedings that I might instigate are probably doomed to failure :(
However do keep the deeply hurtful personal atacks coming dear boy.
I enjoy them more than you'll ever know, and so does your dad or "Sweetcheeks" as Knockie playfully calls him.

some of you should take note....I have one Fulla crap, one dumbass there. Both of those attacks on my rep don't bother me, but I notice the chicken never signed. I suspect it is the same guy and I have an inkling who it is, but it doesn't really matter much, but I think if you care going to slag people, have some balls people, and admit who you are!
Either that, or just debate them in the thread. A couple of boobs just cant handle a debate and they know they cant slag you without a mod jumping on them , so they do it here. THAT is my issue. If someone cant call me a dumbass in a thread posting, they shouldnt be doing it in the rep postings either. Of course, rules on here tend to be up to interpretation at times, and that is ok, but a little consistenency would be welcome in this instance.
Oh yes, BTW, thanks for those who have supported my postings, it made me realize once again I was not the problem....

That I think is Agwiii's reason for dumping the system Hazell, and mine too. If you are forced to sign by the fact it uses your IP to put a signature on it, it would stop some of the cowards. I would then not see a problem with it but as it is now, anyone can slag ya, and if it doesn't matter to you personally, then it is fine, but I figure there is no point in having something that isn't accountable. If we are accountable in our posts, we should be held accountable in our "Rep" presents to other members, good or bad.

This is a great opportunity to practice the art of DETACHMENT.
Detachment is something that we should master in our daily living.
By detachment I don't mean complacency. I mean don't be bugged by stuff that is not worth it.
Yes, I agree that signing a comment you make to others on this forum is following proper forum ettiquette, but that is up to the person making the comment.
I recommend that you don't obsess over it, just move on.
By not only being bugged by it but by also sharing the comments you are receiving, you are just giving more life and energy to this thread.
Let it dissipate, detach and go on with your life.

Oily Rep Update
pieces of good rep I have bestowed - 5
Pieces of bad rep I have childishly spewed anonymously or otherwise - Zero
You see my friends I am a somewhat singularly odd creature who when confronted by someone who gets right up my nose prefers to use the far more gratifying and ultimately more immediate response of administering a corking right -hander to my tormentor's head area.
I tend to find that the sight of their prone and twitching body laying prostrate before me brings a glow of well being that can last an entire day

Either I have the memory span of my goldfish or it was those 25 pints of carrot ale she kept in her fridge :s
Sorry Oily it won't happen again. I'll make sure I finish my carrots next time :(

Well it looks like at least one of the rep people has been rumbled. Funnily enough I've been lead to believe it's someone who posted on this thread trying to cause trouble. If anyone has any problems with constant nonsense rep that they PM Mark and he'll try and deal with it as best he can.
To the person who I'm fairly certain gave me most of this negative rep. You are the biggest two faced little puddle of slime that I've ever met and I hope that your forum friends learn how much of an idiot you've been and make you feel as unwelcome as is humanly possible within the rules of this forum.

I found your rep of http://www.motorsportforums.com/forums/images/reputation/reputation_balance.gifRep (http://www.motorsportforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=198288#post198288)13th February 2007 11:12 AMhaha, you dont learn do you?
Quite amusing. Considering I haven't actually gone out and made trouble with anyone in my criticism of the way a minority of the people on this forum are using the rep system I fail to see what there is to learn. If you want to give me negative rep every 24 hours that's fine and that's your problem. All I want is for the rep system to function as it does on the other forums I frequent and instead of being a private insult and aggravation service I want it to be a way of people showing support for their fellow forumer or showing people that they're doing the wrong thing. If you've got a problem with that then it's your problem and not my problem. If there's anyone here that's a slow learner it's you. The majority of people who've voted in this thread seem to agree that the rep system is being misused and should go. Now I don't really want that. Mark said that he's going to show the stick to a person who was constantly giving me nuisance rep. So through the complaints of myself and others we may get a rep system which works as it was meant to. Giving negative rep to someone who is the victim of negative rep is hardly doing anything to help solve the problem now is it?
Good day! :)

I got negative rep for posting this:
This just in! Erin Crocker wins ARCA pole position for Daytona!
I also had a link to the ARCA website results page.
My negative repper noted "Erin is a crock"
You know I would probably agree with him, I don't think Erin's going to be a star racer, but I just posted news, what's up with that? I don't believe rep is functioning how it ought to.
The sad thing is, I only have a spectacular aura, I am no longer a glorious beacon of light! :( :p : :D

Now that "senior member" status and "rep" have gone, I reckon we could make up titles for ourselves that appear underneath everyone's name. So far, such titles are only restricted to mods and members who have posted too much. ;)

I believe you Hazell but very few people can honestly say that.
I know I sure got a bunch of red & some nasty insults too.
If it wasn't for my friends I would have been deep in the red.
Thanks to everyone who gave me green, it was appreciated.
I'll admit I threw some red around but I also gave a good bit of green.
I never signed the red & usually forgot to sign the green.
If someone made a good point or made me laugh I gave them green.
If someone made a spectacle of themselves whining I gave them something to help them whine.
I miss the rep function, it was fun to toss the green & the red around.

For what it is worth, I am glad that the rep system has gone but that wasn't always the case. I actually thought it was a great idea initially. But getting nasty messages most mornings mostly because of who I happen to live with was getting a tad dreary. It was an anonymous abuse/insult channel.
