Time to get a thread going for the 2013 Somerset Stages.

Always a good day out in Croydon woods and on the Porlock toll road, and I see entries are coming in nicely with 52 entered so far.

Clashes with City's last home game of the season and, as we may be chasing promotion, I'll probably only manage half a day at the rally again :( Really annoying because in the last few years I haven't been able to get to Porlock, which is a great spot to watch at. Unless the timings are just right then it looks like I'll be missing it this year too.

probably this will be the next one for me as well... so far i really like what i see in the BTRDA, so i might skip the BRC in north wales for this one...we will see.

A rally that I always think is worth going to (although that could be because it's the closest gravel event to me) but it requires a bit more effort to find the stages because spectators aren't supposed to be on any of the stages except one (which is repeated). You can sort of see in this video how many people ignore that though.

iAE6bczEGrs

If you can get hold of the stage times/maps then it'll make life an awful lot easier to watch in a decent spot (I've never found the spectator stage to be particularly good, you never get to be close). I've got maps from previous years that may be useful if you want, but without 1st car times they probably won't be that useful...although usually Porlock (the one tarmac stage) is run at about 11am.

I can normally get maps and stage times off of someone. You really wont get anything off of the organisers this time Mr NxOxT, the event is even more PR sensitive than Epynt due to idiots parking in stupid places and the yocals not liking the noise on one weekend out of 52....

Thank you for the information... maybe i will put BRC north wales into my program if things get difficult for Somerset.... will see plenty of time ahead... thanks again.

After the recent 'performance' by Exeter City so called Football Club I have decided that my time will be better spent watching motorsport, so it's a trip to Porlock for me

Thank you. [attachment=1:3t3lyeeu]smileythumbsup.gif[/attachment:3t3lyeeu]

Add me to the list. I've possibly got the info coming from one source but don't want to rely on him too much as I'm not sure he was comfortable with the idea. If I can't find anything then I'll just aim to be parked at Porlock around 10 ish, although ideally I'd like to make the first stage of the day if it's possible.

Hi, Do they do just one run up Porlock? I seem to remember it being used twice in the distant past???
I've not been to a stage rally for about 20 years!

Hi, I am new into the British Rallying, how is the organization of such local events? Are you free to walk along the stage to find a good place to watch? From Wales rally GB, I am a bit disappointed with this aspect. How is the spectator area? Does anyone have a video/photos of what is like there? I currently live in London, and wonder whether it worth the effort and cost (I will need to rent a car as I do not own one atm) to go to the event. Even anyone willing to share costs and travel together please pm me!

Normally two runs pretty much back to back.

As long as you don't go to Chargot (the official spectator stage) then you can stand pretty much anywhere you want, however you'll need to get stage maps and times from a competitor/media person if you want to know where and when to go. In theory spectators are only supposed to go to Chargot, but in practice an awful lot go to other places too.

This video is from one of the other stages xozI4WjCsi8

And this is a pic that I took on another stage http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5229/5629014316_4b16222d7d_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrjanyeo/5629014316/)
Car 21 - Croydon (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrjanyeo/5629014316/) by Jan Yeo (http://www.flickr.com/people/mrjanyeo/), on Flickr

If you're only planning to go to Chargot then I would say the cost of hiring a car is not worth it. If you can get stage maps and plan to go to other stages then I think that it is worth it. If I can get hold of maps/times then I intend to attempt to see 4 stages, one early in the morning, then the double run of Porlock and then a final one in the afternoon.

Then go about it the correct way, bring your children up to respect motorsport, and go to the stage which the officials have designated as a spectator stage. :D

One of the main reasons I enjoy rallying is because, if you're stood in a crap place, you can ditch a stage and go to another one, you don't have that luxury with marshalling. I've marshalled at rallies in the past and I marshal at speed events fairly often, but the Somerset Stages is an event that I really enjoy going to as a spectator. Partly this is because I can pick where I stand and partly because I can stay in bed until about half eight!

I would wager that the majority of the officials involved have flaunted similar rules on a number of times in the past ;) In my experience an awful lot of people involved in organisation of events speak very highly of running night rallies that were on (or over) the limits of the law...And if my dad had taken me to a stage like Chargot when I was a kid then I wouldn't be as interested in the sport as I am now.

I am marshalling on 3 stages on Saturday and have the luxury of being able to drive into stage and park up. Anyway, have a great day spectating wherever you go to watch. :D

If you are based in London it will probably be easier for you to watch this event Spectators | London Rally For Heroes (http://londonrallyforheroes.com/spectator-info/) this weekend.

That's the most likely option at the end. I would prefer a proper forest rally though, but cost is way to much for what it is on offer.

Somerset rally stages happen once a year and I have been in that position myself several years ago when you want to see as much as you can but all that is on offer is the ****ty spectator stage as information is limited. I think if your interested enough to go on here then you deserve to be given a few tips to make the most of it. It's looking good for Saturday sunny with plenty of dust, happy days. I know where I'm heading for 8.30 Croyden woods, if you don't know where your going head there someone will direct you!

Great day out in Somerset today. Started the day on Porlock where Tom Cave, Julian Wilkes and a few others were totally on it through the quick left handers I was at. Great stuff! Went to Croydon after that and watched from an uphill left hander between junctions 36 and 37 where Anstey had a bit of moment on exit, and one of the 106s had a spin after grinding a few gears on entry!

Didnt take many pics, but il post a few up soon. Just need to sort this sunburn first!

It was a great day ! Threw everyone this morning a bit when they split Croyden but I ended up on a new spot which was a bonus , went onto The legendary Porlock on the second hair pin , nice to see one end up on his roof , doubt he liked his error though. Then back to Croyden to see them flat out down the hill into the 90 right great viewing spot and nice to see it reversed giving the smaller class a faster go at it . One question ? Can anyone tell me where Hugh Hunter was and has Steve Perez lent his car out ?

Hugh Hunter has put his Focus up for sale and is looking to replace it with an Impreza WRC. I was pestering Steve Perez about coming to the Somerset with his Stratos but its getting a new engine and wont be out this year, while im not sure why he didnt enter with the Focus.

They didn't seem too bad about it. I was stood right down at the hairpin and both driver and co-driver were smiling and having a bit of a joke. Made me smile to hear the co-driver say "you just ran out of talent, didn't you Dad" :D

Got to go through photos later on today and see what I got. Hopefully a good sequence of the scooby going over at Porlock.
