After FP2

Charles Pic moves from Marussia to Caterham and ends up behind a Marussia.

Sergio Perez moves from Sauber to McLaren and ends up behind the man who replaced him at Sauber (Hulkenberg). But . . .

Nico Hulkenberg moves from Force India to Sauber and ends up behind the man who replaced him at Force India (Sutil).

The only guy who got it right was Lewis Hamilton, who moved to Mercedes and ended up ahead of both McLarens. No one here called that. :p :

Sometimes the plot is better if you just let it write itself!

I am now watching Free Practice as I couldn't live and the Marussia looks decent in Bianchi's hands, Chilton probably needs a bit of time, but by comparison the Caterham looks poor.

Chunky and Slow. Still a fine F1 car.

agreed
I think the marussia is an ugly looking car, but is a better performing machine than the caterham. This despite their financial disadvantage, so good for them.
Green is my fav color for an F1 car so I do think the Caterham is pretty.

Disappointed with how far Caterham are off the pace (5 sec?). I saw them going backwards this year, but not that much...

In fact, I'm disappointed with the performance gaps in general, which seem to have spread out since last year after all. At least it's not as bad as 2002, where on average the top 10 were separated by almost 2sec!

I am glad to see that Marussia found a good pace. I would like to root for Marussia this time around, since Caterham sold itself to rent-a-drivers this year, even after winning the financially valuable 10th spot in WCC for 3 years past years.

I hear you, at least Petrov should have been retained. IMO
but to be fair, Marussia have 2 pay drivers themselves, and why they got rid of Glock.
Although I'm not high on Glock, given the marussia's pace this year, he could possibly had that car closer to the rest of the field

But Marussia now have KERS, which IMO largely accounts for the tenths they have gained on Caterham.

Hard to tell about real gaps after a few practice sessions of the first race. And Quali was a write off. Lets wait and see.

On that I thought I would have a look and see the gaps at Albert Park over the years. In Quali (For fun) as I am sad and like to have a look at these sort of things.

So theres a decent compare of the gaps in F1 history here at Albert Park. In recent years the midfield has closed on the front runners. Take out the new teams and 2 seconds seperated the field generally.

That took a lot longer to do than I thought. Oh well fun to see

It was interesting to note that on the whole. The gap to 10th was 1.5-2.5 seconds nearly all the way through.

The bottom cars were more often than not 4-6 seconds off. Although in the cases of Ide, Yoong and Marques the gap was to do more with the drivers rather than the car.

2009 was the exceptional year with the grid so close.

I think 2013 would be about 4.5-5 seconds spread quite evenly. So you may be right it appears Toro Rosso & Williams have slipped slightly to 2.5-3 seconds behind.

Of course it could be even more next season.

Yeah, it looks like the grid has spread out a bit since last year, and sadly it appears that your prediction of Red Bull running away with it this year is coming true...

As for Marussia; has anyone noticed that they're pretty close to the cars in front of them? I wonder if this is actually the closest they got to P2. I will list the gaps of the 4 cars in front relative to Bianchi: Q1 TIMES ONLY

15.Valtteri Bottas (Williams) -0.819
16.Adrian Sutil (Force India) -0.817
17.Pastor Maldonado (Williams) -0.533
18.Esteban Gutierrez (Sauber) -0.371
19.Jules Bianchi (Marussia) 1:48.147

That looks pretty impressive I think. Timo Glock may even have been able to get a place or 2 higher, but given Bianchi's gap to Chilton, it looks like Jules did a good lap. It may be encouraging to note that Marussia have usually improved after the first race, though last year they wee simply so unprepared so they were bound to improve. Also, their funds for development are pretty low.

Yer early days, but I think the Marussia looks good.

Bianchi and Chilton both look at home and as you point out the gap to the next 3 or 4 cars is less than a second.

I wonder if Sauber regret getting rid of Kobayashi for guiterrez.
I just watched the race again and the guy looked really raw.
Like he needed an entire season of Friday practices.

I will admit that Bianchi is looking way better than I thought he would.
And Van de Garde even worse than I thought.
