Is the engine in the Yaris a locally developed one rather than the global race engine ?

Isn't it a N/A 2.0L engine??

It is indeed a 2.0L naturally aspirated motor. It is locally developed. I am going to be speaking with the engine designer tomorrow, and will revert with my findings after.

Cronje dominated the event, while VW had a disaster. Hergen Fekken crashed off the road on the first real corner of the entire rally, but came back on SuperRally rules to finish 18th. Enzo Kuun had a massive accident at the flying finish to SS3, hitting a bad jump flat out and destroying the car in a the roll that followed. Kuun has concussion from the accident and will need to pass a medical before the next event. Henk Lategan in the 3rd works Polo was lying 3rd overall after day 1 but on the first stage of day 2 clipped a bridge and went off the road, eventually also returning on SuperRally rules but out of the points.

What happened to Gemmell?

Bruce D
11th March 2013, 14:00
Gemmell's car caught fire on SS4. They had been lying 5th overall up until then, but lost time on SS3. On SS4 the car burst into flames and they stopped on the middle of the road to put it out without setting the sugarcane alight. The next 4 cars stopped behind to help and they got the fire out. He continued to finish 12th overall. He did win the last dirt stage of day 2.

Spoke to Gemmel's nav, they landed awkwardly on the same jump that took Enzo out, breaking the exhaust which caused a fire, they stopped on the road to put it out and not on the side as the sugar cane is extremely flammable when anything hot gets close to it.

Car was repaired and they continued on saturday under super rally. They had a stage win as well,

Typical new car gremlins, as they had virtually zero testing before the event, i am sure Toyota will be allot stronger on the Sasol.

Yes I thought it was a good idea that he parked on the road, rather than in the cane. Mind you the thought that the cane sets on fire easy isn't really true. There were a few accidents this weekend where there was no fire. Both Fekken and Kuun's accidents were wrongly reported as fires, and I found out last night that Lategan's accident didn't cause the fire either, when they tried to get back on the road the car backfired on startup and set the cane alight, much like Poulter's did last year. I know the organisers are looking into why those Polos are causing these fires. But hearing it in a stage you can get the idea, they bang on upchanges like the old Quattros used to bang on braking. Clearly they are being overfueled for some reason.

Banging when shifting up was normal with all Oreca engines including Fabia S2000 up to 2012 I think. Maybe Polo took it from Fabia.

Bruce D
12th March 2013, 09:40
Well my understanding is that Polo is basically a Fabia in a different body shell.

We set the cane alight in 2010 in the RunX (Corolla) , no backfire, just the belly of the car was beached. We got lucky when the driver was fast on his feet and moved the car backwards into the cane, away from the fire...... nevermind that we rolled it into a ball the next day :-/

Flip Grant, yeah I remember that roll, that was a proper one. I think it was famous on youtube as well.

Quite a funny side to that whole thing was my father had put a passage control marshal down there to check that people didn't shortcut the stage at that point, next minute they have you guys rolling there and Schalk Burger Jnr rolling into the river and having the rescue him.

Funny maybe , but that move probably saved Schalk and his nav's lives that day, funny how things happen for a reason...... was the wierdest situation ever having 2 identical cars pretty much totalled within meters of each other and having very different accidents. When we got out and had the fire put out one of the ladies told us to look around a bit, and there was Schalk half slumped out of the car and his nav waist high in water, wont forget that scene in a hurry.

Name your source because our local guys aren't saying anything about VW yet, besides that Henk Lategan will be in the team.

Last month, rumours were spread already by Belgian Autonews-Magazine: http://www.autonews-magazine.com/blognl/?p=22891

This morning, a news message appeared in a local Dutch newspaper, confirming the deal (not my pic):

Ok cool. That does through some interesting questions into the mix. VW have got rid of Hergen Fekken and Enzo Kuun but kept Henk Lategan. So now are they reducing down to 2 cars or running 3 still and who drives the 3rd one. There were rumours locally that Raimund Baumschalger was going to come here and do the series. I think VW are desperate to get someone with good knowledge to sort that Polo out now.
