technically, according to the definition of loch, and only if you are Scotts, then yes it could be, but since you are Canadian, NO IT ISN'T :)

schmenke
17th October 2014, 17:36
Is it the one that's extremely acidic?

anfield5
18th October 2014, 02:08
still no, but strangely gadjo is possibly the closest yet.

It is the only natural lake in the country of Ghana, but this sin;t the answer I want, there is something really uniquely interesting about it

Steve - sorry it IS full of water and Schmeke - sorry it is just water

Clue: Think about why it is there - considering it is A) natural, not man-made, and B) It is the only natural lake in the country.

Let me come back with a question, if anyone has a quick one ready go ahead!

Storm

nobody?
well, name the 3 youngest countries in the world...bonus points for year when they came into existence.

Starter

???

anfield5

Timor Leste - gained independence from Indonesia inthe early 2000's
Palestine (reconised as independent state in 2012 by UN)

Storm
28th October 2014, 06:41
SS yes the youngest to the list I referred to...
There are 2 younger than East Timor though...
Palestine isn't one of them (atleast in that list!)

anfield5
28th October 2014, 19:53
Kosovo - this one is slightly questionable as it is not recognised by quite a few UN members i think this was in 2008 or 2009

Maybe Serbia or Montenegro as they were one state that split in half not sure of the date but possibly in the mid 00's

Not Edwards, the one I have in mind is much much MUCH bigger

schmenke
29th October 2014, 22:47
I assume you mean largest commercial airport?

In terms of area (hectares), I believe Denver International in Colorado is largest.
In terms of annual passenger volume I would have thought Heathrow, but that sounds too easy :mark: .

anfield5
29th October 2014, 23:20
Denver is only 140 square kms. (14000 hec)

I think Starter has it. Long Beach is the busiest in terms of cargo. Passenger volume, I would have thought Miami.

Storm

Miami has the most cruises coming in/out...Hong Kong used to be the busiest cargo port but not anymore.

anfield5
4th November 2014, 20:15
Europort is the biggest in area, but not in terms of traffic though.

Cargo maybe Alexandria (Suez Canal)

Passengers - New York

schmenke
4th November 2014, 20:50
I remember viewing a television show about the construction of a new deep sea port off the coast of China, near Shanghai, I believe. It was built on reclaimed land off an existing island where a mountain was blasted away to provide the fill. It was a huge project, but don’t know if this is now the largest port.
I have no idea what it was called.

anfield5
4th November 2014, 22:02
If passengers is not New York. How about the Dover Ferry hub in the UK? Hundreds of crossings to all parts of Southern Europe depart from there every day, and the same number arrive as well?

Storm

I really like whisky. Most whiskies are distilled from malted barley. Much of the world's barley production is used for producing beer and spirits.
Name the top 10 barely producing countries, in terms of annual tonnes (source from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) :)

Sorry, I forgot about this.

The African Rift Valley contains many lakes. Most are saline or alkaline. There are only two that are described as being fresh water. Can you name them?

schmenke
17th November 2014, 18:03
Is Lake Victoria one of them?

anfield5
17th November 2014, 19:44
Tanganyika?

D-Type
18th November 2014, 10:49
I've cocked this up. I misread my source document - it was concerned with Rift Valley lakes in Kenya only. There are actually three if you count one that's on a border.
Lake Victoria is not in the Rift Valley. Lake Tanganyika is, but it's not in Kenya.
There are numerous freshwater lakes in the sections of the Rift Valley outside Kenya - too many to list, so I'll have to rephrase the question to say

Name the three Kenyan freshwater Rift Valley lakes

Hint: flamingoes like alkali lakes so there aren't any flamingoes on these three. But you will find fish in all of them and maybe crocodiles or hippos.

anfield5
18th November 2014, 19:45
Dont know much about Kenyan lakes. There is one that starts with a B and ends with an o - Bekino or something similar, don't know if it is fresh, but I think it is in Kenya?

D-Type
18th November 2014, 22:51
Lake Baringo is one of the three. Probably the least well-known.

anfield5
19th November 2014, 19:53
sorry D-Type that's all I have got

D-Type
19th November 2014, 23:22
Sorry, this has proved too obscure. So it doesn't stall, everybody feel free to look up the answer.

Lake Baringo and Lake N are definitely fresh water
Lake T is brackish and is sometimes classified as an alkali lake rather than a fresh water one
I can't say much more without naming the lakes

anfield5
20th November 2014, 01:29
I cheated - lake turkana

D-Type
20th November 2014, 11:20
Lake Turkana is the lake on the border with Ethiopia. The water is drinkable but only just so it is sometimes classed as freshwater, brackish, saline or alkali. As there are fish like Nile perch, hippos and Nile crocodiles there which are fresh water animals I would class it as fresh water.

One to go now. It's in the central part of the country and is near enough for a day out from centres like Nairobi and Nakuru.

anfield5
20th November 2014, 19:51
Naivasha

D-Type
21st November 2014, 01:49
You've got there in the end.

Sorry the question was such a stinker. I thought my source said these three lakes were the only ones in the whole Rift Valley system, rather than just the only ones in Kenya, which should have been easier to answer.
Generally the Rift Valley lakes are in depressions and don't have outlets so the water evaporates leaving behind the alkali that has been leached from the ground - eg Lakes Nakuru, Elementaita, Rukwa, Natron and Magadi. The three fresh water lakes have underground outlets so the concentration doesn't occur.

One is Everest. Another might be K2. and the last I don't know the name of, but the base is below the surface of the ocean.

gadjo_dilo
30th November 2014, 21:03
The third is in India but I can't remember its name. I'm sure Storm knows it.

steveaki13

What Taz said. Because of the shape of the earth its top is actually further from the centre of the earth than Everest. I believe its in Ecuador or Bolivia isn't it.

Correct - Chimborazo is another that can claim the highest mountain claim. It is not as high above sea level as Everest, but since it is on the equator (not quite but close enough) and the Earth is squashed and not round, Chimborazo's peak is further from the centre of the Earth

anfield5
1st December 2014, 01:28
so we have

Everest - highest above level
Chimborazo - furthest point from the centre of the Earth

Everest - the highest point above mean sea level
Mt Kilimanjaro which is the highest above the surrounding land
The one in Ecuador which is furthest from the centre of the earth (It's further than Everest because of the earth's bulge at the equator)
The Pacific island which is the greatest height from base to peak.
Can't name the last two without looking them up

anfield5

Mauna Kea

Correct Storm. The Hawaiian island of Mauna Kea. It's peak is 4000+ metres above sea level, but it's base is 6000 metres blow sea level giving it a height of 10000 metres a full 1.4 kms more than everest

anfield5
1st December 2014, 19:44

Yeah, I thought about that too, but without looking at a map, for the life of me I can't think of any cold "seas" in the southern hemisphere :s .

There are several in the north though. In addition to those already mentioned, what about the Berring Sea or the Greenland Sea? There are probably several more around Russia but I can't think of them :mark: .
