So the best ever position for a Polish driver on Canary Islands was Holowczyc's 6th place in 1997. Can Kubica improve it 16 years later?

Well, actually I'm even more shocked now after I had a closer look at the photos I realized that it is a slot car track! I used to have something like that when I was a kid, but of course without Holek's car and such great scenery. More photos can be found here:

Rally driver with so much experience, with factory support and be suddenly beaten by half disabled driver with 0 experience, new codriver, new car....humiliation on the whole line.

Don't be silly. For a start Kubica has a different category of car. Kopecky is an excellent driver on this type of event - remember he finished 5th on Catalunya some years ago, only 2 minutes off the winner in a private Fabia WRC.
Robert is doing a great job though but remember every time the RRC cars have started with a decent driver they have won.

I’m not sure why people are shocked - the bloke is massively quick. The only driver Alonso/ Hamilton truly feared, if that doesn’t tell you anything, I don’t know what does. Yes, he’s inexperienced in a Rally car, and there is the pace notes which is what normally causes problems for circuit racers. In terms of talent - he's in another league.

You're overestimating the car. Yes, it's good but here it's the driver what makes the difference. Jan has always struggled in hard to predict conditions. If You go through results of last several years You must find that it was almost always Juho who was faster in case of some fog, partial wet etc.

About Kubica... Three out of three! Amazing!!!
It's true that the current big gap is based on a right tyre choice, but to beat Kopecky and Breen in the Canary Islands when you drive a car for the first time, you have a talented driver. Thinking on his future, it's true that he has no experience on gravel, but to be 6 minutes behind Ogier as Sordo was in Mexico not much experience is needed. Kubica was born in 1984, he is a year younger than the Spaniard. He can improve a lot. Moreover, if Duval, who is four years older than Kubica and won't score a better result than he did in the past, is going to have an opportunity in Germany, I can't see any reason why not giving it to the Pole sooner or later. After his terrible accident, every time that he's driven a rally car he's shown that he has the speed.
Today Robert has started his second life. I hope to see him many years in the world of rallying. What I'm afraid of is that there will be people who will say that he has a technological advantage.

They have the same tyres choice? That could have made the difference in the wet stages, i think i read somewhere that RK as soft tyres and Jan had medium in front and soft in rear.
Also the fog, is not usually the same for every drivers...But, Robert Kubica is a very talented driver, even in F1 he was one of the most talented, if not the most, we have to congratulate him for this show, i did not expect such a perfomance...But let s see in dry stages...

Dont forget also that local roads perfectly suit to Kubica's circuit driving style with clean line.
Kopecký is also ex-circuit driver who prefers clean lines. He also did the rally three times and won it twice. There is no need to create some special reasons why Kubica is so fast. He just is so fast. The fact he is there first time with new car, with new co-driver and is partially disabled just underlines his exceptional skills.

2 of them were dry (SS3/6). Anyway the guys in Porsches were slower than IRC boys every year.
When I posted it SS6 was about to start for the National Championship cars. Now Pons is faster than Oliveira, buy he is 18" slower than Vinyes in the National Championship. Under normal conditions, on those stages, those guys are much more faster than a S1600, even though the great Vinyes is at the wheel. These are last year's times: Tiempos Online - 35 Rally Islas Canarias "El Corte Inglés"*·*A Todo Motor (http://www.atodomotor.com/online/2011/islascanarias/12/4/rally.html)
They're slower than the IRC guys as Kopecky, but they're normally faster than Ancian or Aigner.

At the start of Mégane project I was thinking that on this kind of roads (and dry) it shall be faster than normal gr.N 4WD cars. Maybe now it really is, however so far the car was very unreliable and also not suitable for most of worlds stages.
For Bonnefis we can only say he is clearly faster than Consani but otherwise it's difficult to judge. Don't forget Mégane is much more powerful car than DS3 or Swift and compared to DS3 it's not that much heavier (some 100 kg or so).

Pilot Kubicy - ostra wypowied (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY9g0Y9VbZ4)
It's a typical Polish situation so I'm not sure if you will understand it.
Journalist: Did you see this hand (of Robert)? It... it probably looks bad, because... If... if... if....
Maciej Baran: But your dick I haven't seen and I think it is of a great size!
Journalist: (total silence and confusion)
Maciej Baran: Your last question was out of order and I think this interview is over.
Journalist: But I wanted to ask if... as if...
Maciej Baran: So are we going to the toilette (to check it out) or not? :D
I don't know if you get it. Kubica's co-driver reacted so harsh, because he had to reply to the same question again - the famous hand of Robert story - and he got angry, because the journalist was looking for sensation. So the whole situation is a mix of frustration and typical Polish "culture".
How did you find it?

There were such cases. Hänninen in Russia 2009 won all stages of first two legs (of three). Two were canceled so it was 8 wins scratches in a row which is same like Kubica now. Meeke in the same year won all 7 stages of first leg of Rally Curitiba. Loix won all 6 stages of leg 1 in Ypres 2011. Mikkelsen in Romania 2012 won all 7 stages of leg 1 (one scratch from SSS shared with Porcisteanu).
Basso in Madeira 2009 and Salo in China 2008 won all stages of first leg except an SSS which was a night before (but was counted to same leg).
I didn't check the initial 2006 season when there was only one team with S2000 cars so maybe Basso or Andreucci could be others to the statistics.

I don't think so. If you look at the first statement of this piece of news:
Renault Sport begins its European campaign in the Canaries (http://www.altasrotacoes.com/component/content/article/27-rally/11737-renault-sport-begins-its-european-campaign-in-the-canaries)
it clearly says that they are aiming at the ERC Production Cup.
I don't know how it works, but maybe the engine with turbo is too big to be counted in the 2WD classification? This sport and its rules have become too complicated in recent years.

This just shows how much a lottery rallies on tarmac is. On gravel there is always a way to solv problems with your spiral memory... On tarmac no time left for correction.
It is not a lottery. As far as I remember Juho Hanninen won last year's European Championship without a single accident?

Juho crashed in Sanremo (not ERC though) :)
Jan has not crashed since shakedown of Ypres two years a go. Even on our dangerously bumpy and dirty asphalt it's possible to be reliable. Roman Kresta last time crashed in Barum 2010 (pretty spectacular though :) ).

Robert Kubica hit a barrier and broke the left-rear wheel in SS10. Unfortunately he has to retire.

I guess you didn't do a good review, tarmac doesn't forgive any mistakes and it's a lottery as tyres choice.

Really? In 2003 Miguel Campos finished over 50 rallies in a row and that includes both European and Portuguese Championship. Do you think he won the lottery 50 times in a row? He should be a millionaire now :D

Of course asphalt is less predictable and more dangerous surface but You can understand it. It's difficult but possible. Jarek is from a country where they have very difficult asphalt stages and plenty of crashes on them so be sure he knows what he speaks about.

That only proves tarmac is a lottery.

Than how come there are drivers who don't crash on asphalt or very rarely? There is quite a lot of them.

A lottery is about just that, some have more luck than others.

Then gravel must also be a lottery because Latvala keeps binning it.

Please educate Yourself about principles of lotteries. It's mathematics and statistics, nothing like a luck in 50 cases in a row exists. The fact some don't crash on asphalt means that those found the way to understand it, not that they are lucky.

I still have not seen Kubica's crash but if it is late braking indeed, I am disappointed. Discipline, patience, keeping calm, proper work with the pedals should be his biggest trump.

Well can you give us next lottery numbers then if it's just mathematics?

Per, have you ever spectated on a proper tarmac rally? It's true that tarmac leaves less room for mistakes, but lottery it isn't. And with proper drivers and proper roads, tarmac is just as spectacular as is gravel. I will remember forever the first run of Kopecky in Barum 2010 shakedown, dropped my jaw. There had been few drivers before him, but he truly mastered it at the spot. This season I've already arranged it that I'll see at least one tarmac rally. If you are interested, a lot of information, tips and help are found in this forum.
About Kubica, there seems to be a pattern already and hopefully he gets rid of it soon. Of course an odd mistake can happen here and there, but for his own good and at the same time for the good of our sport, it'd be better he starts to finish rallies too. The (tarmac) speed we already know.

Because it's mathematics, he cant give you lottery numbers. You should read a bit about probability.

Asphalt Rallies can be lottery too, well at least here in Bulgaria where the asphalt is not that smooth and the dirt thrown on it at some stages. But I agree that with smart driving and careful notes, these can be avoided as with gravel Rallies too.

Then can you tell us who will be next off on tarmac rally? We are talking "rally lottery" not mathematics I don't know why someone brought it into this topic. On some tarmac rallies it's difficult to secure every driver the same road conditions, then there is tyres choice factor, start time etc. and that is called lottery and has noting to do with mathematics.

Lottery in the way I explained - no time for correction. Predictable, yes, for sure. But when the car slips away no time for doing anything. That´s my point.

But damn those horns! They got really annoying, plus you couldn't hear the cars over them. :(
