Hey there,

Ok I was remembering today how in February 1998 for my birthday we went to town to get a Formula 1 game, as I'd never had one before. In the shop, I saw this REALLY cool looking one based on the 1997 season with Jacques Villeneuve on the cover. The guy in the shop was asking about computer specifications and stuff. When it became clear that my 16MB RAM 2GB Hard Drive (can't remember the rest of the spec) was not gonna be in the ballpark to run this game, to my great disappointment I had to put down this MEGA looking game...

The guy then offered us an alternative that would run, and it was just £10. This game looked MUCH less attractive with it's dark green cover and unofficial face in plain red helmet on the cover. This was a certain game called Grand Prix and I had no idea how brilliant this game would turn out to be!

But I am now really trying to find this '97 PC game with Villeneuve/Williams on the cover, but I can't even remember the NAME of it. It was something Like Formula 1, Formula 1 Championship, I can't even remember, but I just cannot find it now. I really don't believe it's the same as F197 for the Playstation.

Also, around 1999/2000 I was looking in PC World (or one of those kind of shops) and there was a demo available with a control pad of a Touring Car game. I totally remember Jean-Christophe Bouillon in an Renault being in it, and having a go at Croft. I couldn't get this game at the time, but now I am really trying to find it, but it's as if I imagined it and it never existed. I can't remember what it's called, but I'm certain it was NOT Toca 2 Touring cars!

Please, does anyone know of these fabled games and just what they're called, so I can look them up? Thanks. :)

Ah yes GP2 had a deceptive cover but was brilliant.

The first game you mention might actually be Formula 1 Racing Simulation, based on the 1996 season and had Damon Hill in the Williams on the cover. Was quite hard on machines at the time but I had it was really brilliant and not mentioned by many but truly a great game. Very technical and hard to be competitive. My disc suffered a weird failure and I haven't been able to install it for years which is a pity.

Was it this cover: http://1.1.1.4/bmi/www.x-speed.de/computer/f1/box/f1_racing_simulation_1.jpg

Hi Bruce, thanks for the reply - I've only just seen it now! Um I'm sure it had Jacques Villeneuve on the cover and it looked like the 1997 season to me. It could be the one you mean though as it looked like a really good game!
Aw I can't see the cover Bruce, it isn't showing up...

Oh yeah I mean GP2 of course (I meant Grand Prix 2 but missed out the 2). Yeah I still play GP2 now. :)

Grand Prix 2 was indeed awesome. I remember there some thing with JV where he appeared as 'Driver X' in one game because he'd given his name to another, which I think was the 'official' game.

Oh I'm gonna look it up. It would be really good to try this game at last. Hopefully it might be free now. :)

Yeah it really used to annoy me, that whole "Williams Driver No.1" business in games. There's always one who has to be difficult...

Here is the link to the page with the PC game cover I was talking about x_Speed - Formel 1 (http://www.x-speed.de/computer/f1/index.html)

JV had his own game which I also have called Jacques Villeneuve's Speed Challenge, which was actually a rather advanced game for what it was, effectively a arcade game, but had some good sim stuff in it.

try it, loved that game, but it's very dated I tell you.

I played that game for hours with a joystick. Crap concept when you think about it. Commodore Amiga days.
