It could be interesting to see how he does against Loix-Fabia S2000 and Cherain-Fiesta R5. :) For Cherain it is his home-event, I think it's the 10th time he participates. In Ypres he was really fast but it was only his 3rd Ypres Rally.
The car Meeke is driving is from MY Racing by the way, it should be the car Chardonnet has been driving this season.

Petter Solberg is going to drive the Rallye du Condroz, with this C4 WRC! Another world star after the confirmation of Meeke (DS3 R5). Strong rumors concerning a participation of François Duval in a Citroën WRC car as well... To be continued. :)

It's an easy rally to spectate, and due to the weather conditions and the season of the year, probably the most spectacular event in Belgium. Youtube is full of videos for proof. :) You definitely need a car, public transport is very poor outside big cities in Belgium, and a taxi is for sure more costly than renting a car. Centre of the rally and service park are in the city center of Huy. It's very likely that all hotels nearby will be completely booked already, they already are fully booked several months before the event. The rally consists out of 22 stages (245km SS) on 2 days. It is very easy to see 4 stages on both saturday and sunday (so 8 stages in total), I think we will be going for 10 stages (6 on saturday, 4 on sunday). The distance between stages is quite small, but I can't stress enough that you must take your time, as there is a lot of traffic, and all people are moving between stages. I don't know any rally with bigger traffic jams than Condroz. Nowadays it's one of the most crowded rallies in the world I think, maybe not in numbers, but it feels like that when you're on the stages. Luckily most of the stages exist out of open fields, so there's no worrying about not finding a place with a good view. When the rally's getting closer (let's say 10 days to 1 week before the event) you can always mail me (you can find my adress on my website) for some spectating points and maps. ;)

You're a star tommeke, thank you! :) I assume it's possible to sleep in the car overnight near the stages? If so I can just drive over and not worry about accommodation!

22nd October 2014, 09:27
More good news from Belgium. Davy Vanneste's sponsor sold his Peugeot 207 S2000 and bought a Ford Fiesta R5 (ex Cracco), he will drive it for the first time in Rallye du Condroz.
Also starting in Condroz with a Ford Fiesta R5 is Xavier Baugnet. In my opinion he's one of the most forgotten and underestimated drivers in Belgium at the moment. For those who don't know him, he's from the same generation as Neuville and Boon and has always been driving FWD cars (Fiesta ST and later on R2 cars), last year he did an amazing job in Ypres by winning the R2 category. I don't think he ever drove in the perfect circumstances (especially regarding budget), let's hope for a change for him... :)
In Condroz we will see 3 Renault Clio R3T's as well, they will be driven by Cedric de Cecco, Ghislain De Mevius and Manuel Canal-Robles. They are probably participating with an eye on next season, as there will be a Renault Clio Trophy in Belgium.
@pettersolberg29, maps are becoming available on this page: http://www.condrozrally.be/m30-FR-Cartes_des_speciales_2014.html Some are already online, others should follow soon.

De Cecco seems to aim for the European Trophy next year, winner gets a free entry in MC, winning in MC means u can do a full WRC-3 season. If I'm right..
No Bob de Jong, seems both Lancer WRC will be sold soon.. Bouche still not sure what he will drive, normally he will start probably with a Focus WRC '10 or C4 WRC. We will see, tomorrow the seeded list will come public. If it goes online that's another thing... :p

Nice video, Meeke very spectacular as always! I know the testing-stage quite well, been there during the rally a few years ago, and I was there when Loix used it as test-base in the beginning of the year. You need guts to take the corner at 1min39 flat out, also big moment at 3min30! When you drive it with a normal car you really realize how great the suspension of these modern rallycars is. About Solberg, not much footage from him, and what we've seen is a bit disappointing...
Also an interesting video for the sound. Does anyone agree on how boring the C4 WRC (not even talk about the Focus WRC) sounds compared to the DS3 R5?

Forgive my ignorance but why is the Condroz Rally such a popular event with all these big names entering ?
EightGear
30th October 2014, 23:20
The main reason is because organisers pay the big names to enter. Remember last year Loeb was there. Also I believe Matton is a member of the organisation (not sure). But of course it's still quite a big rally, after Ypres the most important event in Belgium.
stefanvv
30th October 2014, 23:24
From spectator point of view it is spectacular Rally, always with lot of mud:)
tommeke_B
31st October 2014, 08:48
@Eightgear, you're wrong with the organizers "pay the big names". For example some sponsor on the Citroën's is a big competitor of sponsor of the organisation. Yves Matton is NOT a member of the organisation, but he lives in the region. For sure Yves Matton is helping and is sealing the deals with sponsors and Citroën Belgium. Peugeot is "car-sponsor" of the event by the way.
Some background information about Rallye du Condroz:
After Ypres this is by far the biggest event in Belgium, and in number of spectators I'm sure that it's much bigger than Ypres. This weekend the weather will be relatively good for the time of the year. Last time it was similar (2011, year of the fatal accident) there were an estimated 120 thousand spectators. For many sponsors (such as Skoda, Citroën, Peugeot) this is THE event of the year, and commercially at least as important as Ypres. Also the Rallye du Condroz is covered on TV at least as much as Ypres. Last year 2 stages went live on tv, which is unique for a national rally.
Rallye du Condroz has been a big event for a long time, in the early 2000s there have been editions where Condroz had a entry list that wasn't any less than Ypres. The event has had coëff 10 (20 was the biggest, for those who remembered, then you had 10, 5 and 2 if I'm not mistaken) in the European championship. I'm convinced that without the competition of Ypres (being in the same country) Condroz would have been a big international event. Since 2006 the event counts for Belgian championship only, but never lost it's popularity. But still, being out of any international championship, they still keep the same "international" itinerary like an ERC event has. They have a shakedown the day before the event, and 2 full days of rallying. This year the event covers 22 stages (11 different each driven twice), enough for 243km of special stages. The length in km SS has always varied between 235 and 285km SS, which makes it longer than the average ERC event.
The only thing I don't like about the event is how poorly it is organized. Some stages are delayed sometimes in Condroz (in Wallonia in general in fact), also the safety measures for spectators are very poor (last years it improved a little, but not enough).

Matton is indeed not part of organisation but is member of the club who organises it. But it's like Tom said many sponsors bring those big names to Huy, in the 90's we had Delecour, Aghini and many other big stars to Condroz Rallye.

Keith Cronin in first rally in DS3 R5 went well on the Cork 20 rally here in Ireland a few weeks back also, beaten only by Fiesta WRC. Meeke is absolutely flying in every video, really spectacular but fast. One thing that worries me is location of some spectators in the videos, and it will only get worse when rally starts proper. Condroz always seems to have spectator problems, really hope everything will be ok and people will be sensible and safe

Not sure that Lefebvre will run with My Racing. Last year the rule was that the winner driver + the winner team jump to WRC2.
But I don't know if this year there was a team classficiation ?

From spectator point of view it is spectacular Rally, always with lot of mud:)
Unfortunately not this year. It is so dry and warm that there isn't any mud. :( It's just the same like in 2011 when the whole rally and the tests before the event were very dry, but now it is even warmer than in that Condroz. Still the entry list in this rally is very good as always. :)

Loix most likely with Fabia R5 (supported by Skoda Belgium), Tsjoen continues with 208 R5 if plans don't change. Cherain will drive a official Citroën DS3 R5 next year. Princen wants to have the S12 sold before they buy any other car (most likely R5). I think Verschueren will continue with DS3 R5. For Snijers it's always a big question, I think he will do some events with Fiesta R5, he's doing a small event with Fiesta R5 in a few weeks. About Kobus nothing is sure, I heard rumors he wants to drive the Dutch championship next year, then he can win against nobody...

Kris was driving a short gearbox (top around 174kph), while Verschueren and Tsjoen were driving a medium one (top speed around 185kph). Data showed that on saturday Kris was driving in 5th gear for around 50% of the stage-time.
Also did anyone notice how detailed his notes are compared to for example a gravel rally in WRC? It's interesting to see they are using "ice" for the places where the grip is bad. :)

I'm glad you thought that as well. I think they've added more details to his notes, and it seem to be a recent thing. I've never noticed them being that detailed; 'ice' 'mud-slippy' 'don't slide wide', etc
I wonder if it was for this event, or they'll carry on like this in WRC events.
tommeke_B
3rd November 2014, 12:53
It should be only for this event and probably in Monte-Carlo, it's a typical Belgian thing. Many drivers have very detailed notes like that, many small but important things if you want to drive on the limit.
Mirek
3rd November 2014, 13:03
Such details are quite often in Czech notes as well. Funny one is for example ZMK in the notes of Černý. That's acronym for "Za mokra klouže" which means "slippery when wet".

IMO Loix was not at all at his best in this event, punctures, of the road and generally not that fast as we are used to.
He told in an interview that he was saving the car for next year and there was still a lot of development necessary on the new Fabian chassis.
Looking forward to 2015 BRC, hope everyone finds a proper R5 in time.

I wasn't expecting something less from him.He is top wrc driver.
I agree but he is only in his first full season in the WRC..
And I see WRC.com were impressed at his 'giant-killing' in the R5 car against 2.0 WRC cars:

Thanks Dimvii and dodge33cymru ;)
Had a great event. Also the most crowded rally I ever visited. Again the organisation failed, by having only 2 stages that started on time, the first stages of both days. Also in crowd-management they failed completely, not enough forbidden areas (or not big enough) and not enough marshalls to handle the (often drunk) spectators. And for time-registration they failed as well. Times of SS4 being cancelled, a stage where Solberg lost a minute and Meeke lost 40s, coincidence??
Anyway, seen a great, spectacular and fast rally. Meeke was very impressive (as anyone can see on the countless videos), but I was surprised to see both Loix (until sunday morning) and Cherain (before he went off) having times so close to him. All 3 had a very similar agressive driving style. Solberg was a little disappointing for me, he looked quite calm, and also his driving line looked very safe. He didn't take many cuts that other drivers (like Meeke, Loix, Cherain, Princen etc) took. It looked like he didn't put a lot of effort in recce and preparation. Also you don't expect a national driver (Princen) to keep up with him. Princen knows the terrain, but still a C4 should be quicker than an older Subaru S12...

Tommeke, I was thinking the same about SS4, big coincidence, although I think Meeke and Solberg are real sportsmen. Somebody must have taken splits.

From what I understand Meeke and Solberg took the correct course, there was an ambiguity in the layout and many drivers took the shorter loop. The only correct action was to cancel the stage results. Organisers error.

No, incorrect. Also impossible to take a shorter route, it's not a desert rally. ;) The problem was the time-keeping. From what I heard so many spectators passed in front of the photo-sensors of the flying finish that the system went crazy. Normally there is a back-up system where times are taken manually...

It sounds to me like a lot of the extra detail has come from a gravel crew.

In 2015 the Belgian championship will have 9 events, of which 8 best results will count for the title. I think all drivers complain about the calendar having too many events. Who has budget for 9 rallies (average length of 190 km SS per event)?
So all events in BRC:
Rally van Haspengouw
Rallye de Spa (new event)
TAC Rally
Rallye de Wallonie
Sezoens Rally
GEKO Ypres Rally (counts for ERC as well)
Omloop van Vlaanderen
East Belgian Rally

Spa isn't a real rally in fact. It's a regularity event, the average speed drivers should get is 80kph on every stage. In reality it is impossible on most of the stages (only 2 stages where some drivers got to the average speed this year), so you have to go as fast as you can. It has been a nice event, despite the bad organisation. Having delayed and/or cancelled stages are more a habit than an exception and can be quite frustrating for spectators, especially when there's some big regroup halfway the day and they suddenly manage to start on time again. Still the atmosphere and stages are great, and there are always many great drivers and some legendary names at the start of the event.
The event will be completely different next year, and it could be quite disappointing... I'm not even planning to attend the event at this point. What happened is some dispute between the city of Spa and the organizers. So the organizers took the name and will organize their event in another city, some 80kms away. I think on the long run this move will be a catastrophy for the event. At least 75% of the stages will be different I think, compared to last years. For example the legendary "Clementine" stage will be out, it will be replaced by some other forest-gravel stage, but nobody really knows how good it will be. Also part of the fame of the event goes away, and a big part of the atmosphere. Also I think many "big" national drivers won't bother searching for a historic car to enter this event anymore, many are fed up with the messy organisation and the extremely expensive entry fee. Also there is a new event in the Belgian championship in Spa, another reason for national drivers to save their budget for "proper" rallying.

Some first news about the "Spa Rally" is out, after a press-conference yesterday. The event is held on 13th and 14th of march.
Friday will consist of 6 stages, 2 loops of 3 stages. One loop should be run in daylight, the other in the dark. It looks like the famous Clémentine-stage will be run on friday, probably as opening stage. Here's an onboard from the stage, with Snijers without pacenotes! (When this stage was in Legend Boucles de Spa it wasn't allowed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDlYMUZX4bY
On saturday 13 stages will be run, 2 loops of 5 followed by one loop consisting of 3 stages. (3 stages will be run 3 times, 2 stages will be run twice). It makes a total of 19 stages, the total SS length should be around 200km.

Regulations for BRC are officially out now. Some changes:
9 events are on the calendar, 8 best results count for the championship. Who enters in all 9 rounds get 9 extra points for the championship (not for the category-championships). (For info: the points for championship consist out of points scored per event 10-8-6-etc general + 10-8-6-etc. in class, so a driver can score up to 20 points per event. If you're 5th and you win your class you still get 14 points).
First 15 on the start-list should be be RC2 or RGT cars registered for the championship. From 15 to 20 it will be the 5 first drivers in BRC junior standings, after the last junior there will be a 2 minute gap. So first WRC should have number 21...
Also Rally2 goes from 5 to 7 minutes (10 minutes for last stage of the day), which makes it nearly impossible to get in top 10 after retiring on first leg.

The car is formerly owned by Patrick Gengler (driver from Luxembourg), I'm not sure if he was the first owner. For BRC the car should have Reiger suspension and sequential gearbox, so no RGT-spec. For Ypres they will change what's needed so they can start. :)

Both get some official support from Citroën Belux and/or Citroën Racing apparently. So in BRC we will see 4 Citroën DS3 R5's (Cherain, Tsjoen, Verschueren and Grooten)... :)

Belgian Championship should be great this year, with several R5s doing a full season. Really looking forward to the first round next weekend. Following drivers should do a full (or almost) season:
Loix (Fabia S2000/R5) with support from Skoda Belgium
Cherain (DS3 R5) with support from Citroën Belgium (and Citroën Sport?)
Tsjoen (DS3 R5) with support from Citroën Belgium
Verschueren (DS3 R5)
Grootten (DS3 R5), at least first half of the season
Princen (208 R5) with support from Peugeot Belgium
Beckx (Fiesta R5)
Snijers (Porsche 997)
Allart (Fabia WRC), can't take much points for the championship with a WRC
Etc...
My prediction: close rallies but in the end, I think Loix will be champion again. Biggest threat should be Cherain and Princen. A lot will depend on the performance of the new Fabia R5.
For next weekend, I predict a Loix victory is the weather is bad. If it's mainly dry, Cherain and Princen should be very close, maybe even Van Woensel (first time with Lancer WRC) could play his role.

I'm afraid Loix will take it. Cherain showed really nice speed in for example EBR last year, pitty we couldn't compare to Loix that moment.
Princen had the luxury of having a really fast car, but needed a wake up call every rally, was quite slow and made mistakes at the start of several events. But maybe, and he has proven a lot in the past, he is much better in a slower car, more confidence, more speed. In the Evo gr A he made quite some mistakes as well.
Loix will be the man to beat, whoever wins the title, it will be with proper competition this year.
Let's hope the R5 cars will be reliable!
Can't wait for the Haspengouw to start! Backpack is ready to go! :-D

For Haspengouw Chris Van Woensel is my favourite, with so many long straights and junctions... I think there are 2 stages where he could lose some (Halle-Booienhoven a little and Zepperen some more), on the other 2 (Gelmen and Walshoutem) he should gain a lot of seconds with all the straights. I think he will make a better debut with this car than Princen did with the S12. Princen was quite disappointing last year, apart from Rallye du Condroz.

Actually, if you see what Duval could do in that car in Condroz few years ago (2009), CVW has only one option: to win. Of course he needs to adapt to the car.
Don't quite understand why he switched to a superior car anyway. Is it possible that this Mitsu WRC is less expensive to run than in the mean already quite old Evo X R4?
I can understand he does it for the fun, but certainly not for competition.

Of course that was Duval and he had the whole official MML (former works team and mechanics) around him... ;) Also it's 6 years ago, nobody drives an S2000 of 2009 anymore. The Lancer WRC is certainly more expensive to run than Evo X R4. But probably a bit cheaper than top-S2000 and top-R5. The real expenses of these cars start to show when you go off and do some damage, so far Van Woensel rarely crashes. I think there are enough reasons to choose a Lancer WRC in stead of Evo X R4.
- More attention from people and media (even with current BRC rules)
- More fun
- Better results
- Harder to hit anything with rear wing :p
- Value of car will not drop like the value of Evo X R4 or an R5-car will. Older WRC cars are quite good investments. If you buy a Fiesta R5 and sell it in 2-3 years, it's old and worth maybe 60-70% of value now? If you buy an Evo X R4 it will be the same, probably worse if regulations change. I heard quite positive stories from people who bought WRC cars and could sell them with almost no loss or even small profit after some years. ;)

The stages are least interesting in the Belgian championship, in my opinion. 4 different stages (13 in total). A lot of straights and junctions. One stage (SS Zepperen, SS2-6-10) is very different from others, with half of it being on gravel/mud, and also the asphalt parts are quite interesting (a lot of fast corners), that's the stage where the driver makes the difference. :)

is their one make cup / trophies ? who are the crews registered for Junior BRC ? Are PTN eligible for Historic champ ?
That's the bad point of the Belgian Entry List. You never have this kind of piece of news, whereas it's interesting to know this.
Good to see an Alfa GTV on entry list :) and really surprise by the Lexus IS300 ...
Golf in N4 ? Golf R32 ?
and Soenens is crazy to start with Corvette ...

No one-make cups. 208 Rally Trophy starts in Spa. PTN are scoring for historic championship indeed. ;) Indeed Belgian entry lists are sometimes a big mess, and starting positions are not always fair for all drivers. The Golf in N4 (in criterium, not Belgian championship) is a Diesel.
