I was away for the morning and what can I see. One Citroen in top 10? Looks like they have swiched to their average swedish form :-P Henning looks great! zero testing, bad starting position with test car between Prokop Neuville (both with testing and Neuville with nearly perfect roadposition). I like when local drivers are doing well on their rallies:-)

Lets wait a little bit more for the first 2-3 gravel rallies. Not that I'm having big hopes, this is a serious team with budget, resources, personnel, top car and the top drivers 1 Ogier 2 Latvala versus Hirvonen-Ostberg-Sordo with Citroen-MSport Ford on life support only by Middle East money? If the trend continues... Brace yourself for an even bigger domination than Loeb's unless they revert to 2008-2011 road starting method to create artificial competition with tactics to keep it interesting. Not that it will change the result.

I don't think so. If VW wins this year's WRC they will pull out of WRC as fast as they can. It's all about the promotion.

Look at Audi. To this day they promote new cars (RS6 for example) with their WRC history.

My summary of the day:

Pontus Tidemand has been really impressive.

Ostberg did well to keep his composure after the dramas this morning and had a fantastic afternoon.

Poor Mikko Hirvonen must be pretty annoyed with himself.

It's also good to see and hear Henning Solberg back for a rally too. The WRC needs big personalities like the Solberg's who are always good for a quick sound bite or a swear word. Henning seems to be genuinely happy to be there and just seems to be having fun.

It says a lot about Loeb that he chose to do this event when he knows he isn't too great on the snow. Obviously unfinished business and today is the first time he's appeared slightly rattled, although there was an air of 'I don't really give a **** either way' about him. Let's hope he turns it up to 11 tomorrow and start to push Ogier to go even faster!

If you've missed anything then I've put a news feed and some videos on the page in the link below.

Well, VW winning the WRC would give them a new success to use in promotion. They haven't had that since the Quattro days. And, given that it's all about the promotion, what's the point of pulling out quickly even if you do win? There's not much to gain in terms of advertising from that.

Still, though, I'd rather it was VW in sportscar racing and Audi in rallying.

.

Not so fast. Their WRC programme is designed until 2015, but of course the situation can change if they achieve the titles much sooner than was the aim.

But If they can dominate the rallies already now and Loeb is retiring there will be no competition in WRC in the near future at all. They have the fastest two drivers and Mikkelsen is also good driver so it is possible to take triple wins already during this season.

It was great to see Volkswagen to join the game, but if someone has enormous budget and hightech technology I doubt that there will be any more new Manufacturers coming to the WRC, before the situation has once again changed...

If VW will begin to win and the Championship of Manufacturers or drivers, or both, will take is it possible that other brands such as Hyundaii, Peugeot, Suzuki want to enter the game? Would commercially a great showcase to all them.

Quote they already were, perhaps other brands such as Fiat, Renault, the same Mini with a factory program... who knows?

By that logic, shouldn't Audi have pulled out of Le Mans style racing many years ago?

They have factory opponents in Le Mans. This year and last year they have Toyota, the years before it was Peugeot. Something VW doesn't have in the WRC. Wouldn't be too good promotion if they can't win the title in a championship full of private teams.

Plus it wouldn't be the first time for VW to spend loads of money and then pull out quickly. Does anyone remember those VW Golf24 they sent to the 24 hours? Those cars where very expensive but they only competed in one race. VW could have sent some Scirocco R Cup like they did before. But they decided to build some expensive prototypes that couldn't even compete with the much cheaper GT3 cars.

What happened the Vysledky WRC results service this season?

Anybody?

Vysledky-rally.cz was an old system of autosport.cz used only for WRC events. Now all result services of autosport.cz can be found on rally-base.com like it was with IRC, ERC etc. Since 2013 autosport.cz uses only this system for all WRC, ERC and Czech events.

Here's my video from day 1. I had some problems with the zooming on the camera from Tidemand at Lesjöfors but got some good stuff anyway.

https://vimeo.com/59256968

The Lesjöfors spot is where Mattias Ekström went off with the Skoda several years ago. A really good place but a quite far walk. Did not manage it this year, instead ended up in showelling and pushing Mikko out from the ditch. That was a bigger effort than continuing the 800 meters to get to your spot :)

AUDI didn't do one time promotion in Rallying. They've thrown quite some efforts to develop the S1 evolution of Quattro which was supposed to dominate over the midengined Peugeot & Lancia S4. The end of group B threw that away, not AUDI. They did car also for Group A in '87 - 200 Quattro, but that was just an adventure as the car was heavy and uncompetitive against the newcoming dominator Delta HF Integrale, the limitations of Group A just made it impossible for further development of a car that S1 was. When AUDI pulled out of Rallying they went to Grand Am & IMSA series in US, later on DTM & Le Mans.

As it was mentioned by some post VW have long term plan, which initially was untill 2015, but later was extended with 2 more years, so that's 5 years we shall see Polo in WRC.

Is it just me, or did Ogier not have a little stab at JML right at the end of the English-version broadcast?
On the discussion of setups, it sounded to me like Ogier was a bit cheesed off at JML for not trying his setups. In particular I'm referring to his 'but still there is a difference, maybe he's gonna try (mine) tomorrow, I don't know'.
Sounds to me like JML might never have tried a full 'Ogier-setup', which might have hurt Ogier on his pride - and now he can justify that by leading?
Also, Ogiers mood seemed to change when the talk turned to setups.

Am I reading to much into this, or are others seeing this as well?

stefanvv
9th February 2013, 07:17
I don't think so. They have different driving styles, Latvala tries to find his own setup as he haven't driven the car as much as Ogier and Polo is quite different from Fiesta. That was just stupid question I think.

Yep, Ogier just not happy with rhythm in SS10 so backed off a little, no major problems.

I like Ogier. I remember him getting more and more frustrated at Citroen so happy to see him flying for VW. I'm a Mikko fan, but as he is out of the running anyone can win, just so long as it is not Loeb (again) :)

Regarding this rally I dare say it's not all over. It seems that if Ogier does not push Loeb can catch up but if Ogier does push he might make a mistake so there is still some tension.

Regarding VW's pace we should wait for the gravel rallies but I think Citroen are in a bit of trouble. I think they weren't expecting the Polo to be so fast and regarding the driver's title they don't have an all round driver that can beat Ogier. Mikko could win on gravel and Sordo can on tarmac but if the Polo shows the same pace on gravel then to me Ogier is the favourite for the WDC. Citroen do have a good chance at the WCC though because VW have Latvala and Citroen still have Loeb for some rallies and two other reliable drivers.

I hope not. The championship can get pretty interesting even on the manufacteur side with current line-ups, and without Loeb.
You must be joking. This year has Ogier - VW writing all over the place. (If you haven't noticed he is dominating this rally's thread, yep Sweden!) Travel back in time to Gronholm-Peugeot 2002 and Loeb-Citroen 2005 to bring similar road position rules. Ogier is the all-rounder of the field, Latvala is fast and improving on tarmac albeit generally still unreliable while Hirvonen and Sordo are stationary, good on gravel only and good on asphalt only respectively. Only opposition's DNFs will keep them alive. I will go as far to bet that Sordo will not manage to win a tarmac rally this year. Where you had Loeb-Citroen just write over Ogier-VW.

Back in 2004 there was for the first time a non scandinavian winner of rally sweden, he almost destroyed WRC after that, lets hope we don´t see the same again

I prefer to believe that a Ogier's win here will mean something similar to Sainz's one in 1000 Lakes 1990.

I wouldn't say last nine years Loeb was driving for pleasure.

Of course I didn't mean it literally :) .

This live streraming should be joined to the splits.
For example split 4 in WRC.com splits would have camera icon on it
and there should be a straight link to the streaming.

It would take two or three cameras in one split.
U could 3 stages with nine cameras. (driven x2 thats nine stages.)
Should be much cheaper than using helicams.

When they both work in real time who needs live TV?

In overall, this rally has been a big disappointment for Finns. We had such a strong setup for this event, but I think all our 5 WRC drivers haven't met what was expected from them.

I'm most, if we can say "impressed", with Juho seems to be learning Fiesta little by little. His times are improving as the rally advances. It will be interesting to see what he can do later on this season when he is more adapted with Fiesta. Or in a Polo.... ;)

Very impressed with Sebs and Tidemand (despite the retirement). They are the stars of this rally so far.
