And for those who will attend the Swedish rally with a smartphone or a tablet (Android, IOS or Windows Phone 7), I made my best in order to put all the special stage maps available for MakkaMappa (free little application) so that you can see your GPS position onto the maps in live (off connection)...
Download MakkaMappa, log in, search for their featured maps, find Sweden 2013 or WRC, download the maps, that's all!

Yes i think Novikov has a lot to thank Giraduet for when it comes to experience, consistancy and ability to finish rallies. Also its to early to talk about the co-work between Novikov and Minor since it takes way longer than just one event to form a demanting driver codriver relationship like that.

Don't forget Ilka was with Evgeny for the last 4 events of 2012. I commented last year on what a difference DG had appeared to make to Novikov's driving and he is obviously still closely connected.

It,s sad, because that's what WRC needs! I had hoped for more with the new promotor but the broadcast from Monte was not so good I think. Very little stagetime, and sadly a lot of other ****. But I hope that was because it was the first rally of the season?

I think its fully possible but that is is a cost issue. Have in mind that this is only one short (~7km) stage,
a WRC round is a 20+stages event with many longer stages. Then you will realize the enormous length of all necessary
power cables to the cameras and then the video cables from the cameras to the media center.
Then you will also need someone to man all those cameras.

I think that we will all be happy to see a short stage of every WRC rally like this one in Sweden. I don't expect full coverage like Montes in Eurosport like years ago yet, only something like that will be better than nothing. And if SVT can do this for a local rally with limited audience i don't think it's so expensive.

About the cables. There's only one cable for the camera through which image signal, power and communication with the control room go.
An example from the luge world cup, e.g. Sigulda race. The track is 1,2km long with 16 turns. Can't remember how many cameras there were but quite many. Planned time for cabling was two days. Sth like 15km of cables were put down, I think. Now think how it would be with a long stage, not to talk about several stages per rally.

But I dont's think it's necessary with cameras in every corner. Like on the sprint today, 3-4 cameras is sufficient on a stage in my opinion, it doesn't matter if it's 7 km or 40 km. It's exciting with an image of an empty road with a clock ticking waiting for the car as well. The most important thing is to have the timing functional, today that part wasn't perfect.

If you want a decent high quality broadcast you need lots of different cameras to attract even the average Joe. For Christ sake, rally fans would be happy even if they could see only onboard cameras live.
For high end you'd need several cameras at the key locations, onboard cameras, preferably a helicopter and logically a stage end interview camera

I agree that there is no need for a camera in every bend but I think on a stage like Vargåsen which about 25km
I think maybe 5 cameras would be minimum. I also agree with what say about the fixed camera position and the clock.
However in the end if you have 5,6, or 7 cameras isn't a big difference. If you want a camera in the middle of the stage,
you still need to put a cable out to it. That is 12km of cable. Then you could just as well put a camera or two in between.

Remember France last year? All stages live. Onboard, helicopters and one fixed camera in the middle of the stages. 2 or 3 more cameras would have been better, but other than that is was excellent.
And these were all stages, imagine just 1 or 2 stages shown each day of a rally. France proved (not just last year but also in 2011!!) it is absolutely possible.

When you take rally to forests like in Sweden or Finland, helicopter isn't anymore best for filming. With handful of fixed cameras and helicopter it of course could be possible, but - it's WRC. When you take rally to forests like in Sweden or Finland, helicopter isn't anymore best for filming. With handful of fixed cameras and helicopter it of course could be possible, but - it's WRC. With forum(s), Twitter, Facebooks, friends and WRR, we don't really need one-place-for-all live tv, now do we.
We don't, but to make the sport more popular it is kind of vital. You are from Finland so things related to rallying are bit more positive there I'd guess. :D

Hmm... let's see. I don't use paychannels, so let's see what I get from free-from-all channels.
WRC: 10 minutes with few shots and interviews aired around 10.30PM, mostly commercials. 30 minute end of day reviews aired between 0.30-3.00 AM. Not very prime time, and if you want to record it, put some extra because it always starts late. Last year they showed one-hour review of each rally about a week after the event on Saturday midday (again, not prime time). I trusted that if I remembered it. From MTV3 pay channel I think there's some extra or at least better broadcasting times.
FRC: 30 minute review a week after the event.
IRC/ERC: Nothing. (Few years ago one sports channel aired Eurosport reviews some 1-2 months after the event.)
F-Cup: Nothing for free.
Rallysprints: Nothing?
Rallycross: Nothing?
So, I watch a rallysprint from Swedish forests anytime when broadcasted online :-) Rallying is truly being pushed to the marginal here as well.
And of course I was being sarcastic in my previous post. Of course WRC needs a world-class television production.

Could one of my Scandinavian friends assist me please? SS17 Mitandersfors is run at 8am on Sunday - will it be light by then? I intend going to the fast left hander just before the finish, and as the stage is approx 30km long I'm guessing the cars will take around 20 minutes to arrive?
The reason I ask is I'm a photographer, and need to know the light levels, if it's too dark it'll be pointless going there!

Of course WRC needs a world-class television production.
In the present days of popularity crysis, the WRC needs a world class footage broadcasted on the internet. Because:
1. Propaganda - all WRC fans around the world have an internet connection, but not all of them have access to that particular channel. Also, in internet you can watch recorded footage at any time you want, while timeshift for TV is not that widespread.
2. Advertising - websites measure more precisely the number of people who have opened the page and seen the commercials.

I am not a scandinavian, but my tablet's applications gave me these informations:
- the sun will be low on the horizon (1.1°) at 8:20 am
- there are trees on the side of the road and that will give unfortunatly less light for your photos

Depending on your arrival time, there is a walk of approximately 1,800 meters to the last hairpin of the stage (25 minutes).

I won't bet on that road being cleared. I spoke to an official regarding that access road yesterday, and he reckoned it won't be cleared. So, the only choice you have for Sågen is the start, the access road from the north a couple of km in, and the finish.

We reached last year the middle of the stage via the road to Bäcken and then to the stage. We did it with a van ( Ford Transit ) on snow tyres ( no nails ). You need some luck to avoid as much as possible the reverse traffic, but we had no major problems to reach it. There is a possibillity to turn your car a bit before the stage on the road to the left.
We watched all the cars and afterwards we just got in time for Hagfors Sprint.

It's so sad that PG will not start in the rally but I really not like Proton, it's a ****ty rallyteam with no quality and no future.... PG is a really great driver but as so many drivers, there is no money to pay for a seat in a big team!
He really needs a new team in ERC or WRC/WRC2! He is better then driving for Proton!
Sandell is some kind of joke... He will never be a WRC driver, he is good at PR but not near as good as PG and Flodin as a driver... He can continue with his other events in mountainbike....
Really sad for sweden, but I think that Tidemand has the right qualitys and the support that needs to succeed....
But as always in motorsport these days.... Money rules, not always a great driver....

Unfortunately watching a limited number of cars means you have to stay at a stage for at least 30min anyway to get the best drivers in WRC with the qualification now. Think Latvala was 17th on the road last year, 17 cars with 2 min gaps. Won't be far off that this year too i guess. Staying 30min at Finnskogen 2 and then Torsby would give you too little time, 15 min if you are lucky going into SP1 at Torsby from stage end area of Finnskogen....

As I have been in Sweden quite several times, you should understand that this rally is very popular and traffic jams are inevitable. Especially Vargasen, Sagen, Finnskogen are very popular. 4 stages in a day is achievable though, but good planning is needed. Also access roads are slippery and icy, so for a guy from Belgium it's very slippery ;) Couple years ago guys from Netherlands went off to a ditch just in front of us and because we stopped and helped them back on the road, we missed one stage. But it was worth it. So make your plans not too tight and drive carefully :)

Thanks for the replies, I'd rather not disappear after the top 15 cars and miss the S2000s and other WRC crews, so 3/4 stages a day would be too much of a push with the likely heavy traffic. Plus some of the locations we've planned on involve a fair bit of walking!

The organisers of Rally Sweden are inviting fans to choose the head-to-head pairings for the Karlstad Super Special Stage that opens the event on February 7th.
Pairing suggestions should be posted on the Rally Sweden Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/OfficialRallySweden
The organisers, in cooperation with the FIA, will divide the heats according to the number of nominations.
Clerk of the Course Bertil Klarin said it is the first time ever that spectators have been able to influence the starting order of a WRC event.
“We tried this idea in the Swedish National Championship event we organised in 2009, which also opened with the Super Special Stage, and the interest was huge and we received a great number of suggestions of interesting duels. Now we want to try the same thing at the WRC level and offer the spectators the opportunity to see their dream heats,” explained Klarin
“Just one look at the entry list for Rally Sweden no doubt gets the imagination going. To put together a number of dream heats amongst all the top drivers won’t be hard,” he added.

I support the first pairing, but for the others shouldn't be better for example Latvala vs Hanninen & Hirvonen vs Ostberg?
BTW I couldn't find poll there, should I login in FB to post a comment?

Yes, you drive with them on the long road sections. if it's on tarmac it's better not too exceed 80kph too often because the studs on hard tar will overheat easily and start moving in the rubber and glue which holds them. if you don't take proper care you may have trouble with your studs and lose them premature on the stages.

They try to organise the route so that most of the road sections is run on minor roads which often are more or less ice- or snowcovered. This is also a question of logistics and the concern of the rally not being hindered by heavy spectator traffic. For the long haul between Karlstad-Hagfors and return the teams fit studless or studded "normal" wintertyres on the cars. The 90 kms to and from Hagfors on dry tarmac would certainly ruin the competition tyres. Thats why each day starts with a 10 minute service in Hagfors before the go out to the first stage.

Not a lot of snow in Norway either, but quite good icecover on the roads. Rally Finnskog last saturday still showed a lot of gravel coming through for the second run of stages. Tyre management will most definitely be a major point in the rally, unless it continues to snow a lot, like it does here in Oslo at the moment...

Without any champinship preasure Sebastien Loeb shows his true skill. Despite Hirvonen's faultless an fast drive his is not able to chalenge for win, wich wil be go to a winner of a king battle - Loeb vs Ogier. Loeb shows again who is te real King and wins the rally with only few seconds over Ogier. Not being able to keep up with french Superdrivers Hirvonen is comfortably faster than the rest and comes home in third position. Fast latvala boy shows good speed in a couple of stages, bet is still not comfortable in a new Polo and is a little too cautios because of Monte crash - He does not want to be a crashvala any more. Further down the field every thing takes hes own place according to true pace. Sordo comes fifth an with no any advanegous conditions and with no top driver crashing out Ostberg manages only six just because everone else in front of him is simply faster. Fast Neuville goes through a couple of small mistakes thoughout the rally, but is able to continue driving resulting in his first points in 2013 for a 7th place in Sweden. Juho Hanninen does the same - shows incredible speed in some stages but after one or two small chashes is able to come to finish in 8th. H. Solberg wants to show his speed, but is too optimistic and crash out in first day. Novikov repeats his mistakes - Drives carefully at first, bet seeing that he is able to go up the leaderbord crashes out.

Haven`t seen his testing videos? Haven`t noticed his progress the last year? Still five guys will be faster than him, on snow and ice??? It will give you great odds, mate, but I`m convinced you won`t win any money on it!

I also think Ostberg is too underestimated here, he has good chance for a podium and I think top 4 for him is easy job

Ben:
Right in the middle of the stage... In map you will see a mark that shows "parking" before the last public area before the finish of the stage... Really nice!

You will park on a access road that will come out on the stage after the straigth with the jumps in a fast left/right corner who goes up over a long crest! Go right when you come out on the stage!!
You will need to walk for a few hundred meters and you can choose one of the jumps! ;) I will absolutly be there, like in finland! :P

It's been a dream to do Rally Sweden for a long time and can't wait now!

My video from last year. The other little jump and crest into a right hander is not run on Finnskogen stage this year.

41 yeah.
Just copied a reply i made to someone else, all your requested places should be there.
47s is final corner of Mitanderfors.
1:40s is not used this year. It's on Finnskogen but they made the junction right 1km sooner this year. It's after the long middle section.
3:03 is 1-1.5km after the first junction on Lesjöfors. Where Henning jumped and landed on his side in 2011 i think.
4:20 is about 1.5 km before SP 1 at Rämmen, you can see the lake on the map.

I´m thinking about the turn at 4:20 on Rämmen.
Was it hard to get there? Did you walk from SP1 or is there any other roads?

Not hard you just have to walk a bit, 2km at the max. Walked down from SP1 roadside parking.

I would say it´s shorter walking from SP2 against the route. Only a couple of hundred meters...I reccon.

Isn´t that in the wrong direction? SubaruNorway wrote that it was 1,5 km BEFORE SP1, or is it me who have got it wrong?

Can anyone recommend a good location in Finnskogen? I can't seem to find any in-car footage on the web! I had a message from someone telling me there is a jump in there where Steve Rokland rolled last year?

You got it right, Rallyper got it wrong ;) There is a gray road on the map coming from SP2 though but I'm pretty sure that's not open, would get you 200m before the spot if it was.
Does anybody know if this road from Sunnemo towards Lesjöfors is open? It would save me some time going from Höje where i live to Lesjöfors.

Anyone been on the rally bus before? It say which stages it visits but not which carpark. Are there multiple busses that you can use to get between stages? First Rally Sweden, cant wait :) Just hope the snow holds out and the bird enjoys her first 'proper' rally!

Not sure if they run the jump this year, it was less than 1km after SP2 but the stage has a junction right somewhere there now, i have a very vague memory of a junction after the jump so maybe it's still in. The jump has a lot of bounce to it and a 2 right 70m after it so not sure how good it really is, haven't seen any video or pics from it.

Found the jump in the first clip, not that big as you can see.
