He said that during the stage they entered a dry riverbed. All of a sudden, in 2-3 minutes, lots of water started coming down. They couldn't do nothing at all, they just got out of the car and went to a higher place and waited there. After that, a truck from the organization came and pulled them all the way to the bivouac, arriving there on early morning.
The team rebuilt the whole car, leaving it ready for the following stages.

Serious mechanical problems for truck leader de Rooy. The top is already in finish but he has not yet reached WP7! On WP6 he was loosing 1:17.

Lot of change in moto too ...
First Casteu had a mechanical problem -petrol tank- and then he falled, triying to pass a driver.
We can notice to two falls for Pain. In the second he is suspected to break or his petrol tank or his oilpan. Lopez is falled too, as Barreda. But Barreda is doing a nice stage, even if it's Despres who is doing an incredible stage.
In auto, lot of km to do. But Al Attiyah is losing 7' on Peterhansel, his Buggy is not good on its ground. De Villiers is leading the stage ahead of Roma, Peterhansel and ... Sousa ! Nice perf for the Great Wall. But undoubtedly it is, today, a stage for the 4x4 and not the buggy.

Yes, no one knows if something happened to them or if it's just a problem on the website. This year, Mitsubishi Brasil team is doing a good 'coverage' through Facebook, and so far no news about problems was posted. Let's wait and see.

Yes, went straight on a junction, rolled on his side on some dry grass and the hot brakes caused the fire...

So, the press release of Mitsubishi Brasil was just published. They had an electrical problem 20 km into the stage, probably an consequence of the water on the previous stage.

In moto it's closer. Faria is leading ahead of Despres. :D I don't know if he will try to resist him ... he has to change his engine probably... Lopez hasn't change his engine too, but he is not from KTM Red Bull team, so he will try to match them. And moreover, engine change by Despres wasn't for a new engine, but an old one which have done the beginning of the race. So Lopez is at the same point as him. I hope for a big battle btw them ! Yamaha boys since too far (even if Pain has limited his lost), and only Husqi boy fighting is Botturi, and I'm not sure he has the speed too catch KTM's. But he has the regularity.
1 Faria (KTM)
2 Despres (KTM) 5'23

Just a small note. Unlike Kamaz trucks the Tatras are different for each team and also the two teams are not in the best relationship. None of them is factory and each team built their trucks somewhat different. For example trucks of Loprais and Kolomý have very little common. The biggest difference is engine. Loprais has Deutz and Kolomý uses Buggyra.

Thk for the information ! I thought it was the same trucks ...
And I have a question : are Kamaz and Tatra well know brand in Central and Eastern Europe ? I never see any of them in Western Europe.
Mirek
15th January 2013, 11:01
Yes, they are. Kamaz is rather huge in Russia and in the east but I have never seen any here in central Europe. Tatra used to be much bigger company before the fall of socialistic block. Now they produce around 1500 trucks per year, almost all of them are for terrain or military use, that's why You don't see them on motorways. Last year they signed some partnership with DAF, let's see if it helps them.

It's a good excuse to head back to Africa.
it's almost impossible to come back in Africa with a so mediatize race. Look at the situation in Mali and Southern Algeria ... it's worst than some years ago, when Dakar was threatened by terrorists ...
For the rain, I think it's the first year that two days are cancelled due to this ?
And what's more, torrents comes really fast, and 2 hours after, it has quite disappear ... It's infuriating because it's not long ... but it's at the time of the rally, not one day before or after, no just for the race ... :(
There was incredible pictures of car with road just falling under there ! Some days ago a crew was shown on French TV. He said he was driving and then the torrent comes, and the front of the car falls in this new torrent which didn't exist 1 minute before ... And his teammate had the same problem yesterday :D (Buggy MD Rallye)

I have no doubt you're right, to head back to Africa is out of touch with the real world. Nevertheless, I always feel nostalgic every year when this race starts. The main problem is the one you stated: the Dakar is a mediated race. Nowadays, you can celebrate a race as the recent Africa Eco Race (http://www.africarace-live.com/images/stories/TN_carte_AER13.png) through Mauritania, but only because it's almost unknown. Although, as you say, the situation in Mali and Algeria is worse than some years ago, even Morocco is a dangerous country now, with Al-Qaeda recruiting people there. Also Senegal is in the sights of terrorists. (I teach History).
The rain was just that, exceptional circumstances. There is no better place to run a race like this on this globalized world than South America. There are no better videos of the Dakar than the ones from 1979 until 2007 that I keep in my hard disk. There is no better end for the Dakar than the Rose Lake of Dakar.

So, it's finished ...
Moto : what a race ! I thought that without Coma the race will be boring ... but no ! A lot of fight btw KTM, Yamaha and Husqvarna. I will retain some things : first of all, the incredible speed of Husqvarna. For sure it's good for the future ! And the great come-back from Yamaha. But I was really disppointed by Honda.
In term of drivers, we saw a lot of thing. First of all congrats to KTM Red Bull. 1-2, really great great rally ! Ruben Faria proves this year that he is able to be a leader now ... he has the speed. I wope he will have his chance.
But for me the most impressive guy was Joan Barreda. What a driver ! Not reliable for the moment, but it will come. And the certainty that their will have another fight spanish - french in the years coming when Despres and Coma will retire. Olivier Pain showed he is ready to be a professionnal driver, and a potentiel future winner. He made mistakes too, but he has the speed and the regularity. Great race by Casteu too, too bad he retired, and can't fight against Despres.
And the last point I will retain are the US guys. I really hope that Campbell and Caselli will be back. The first is the one who succeed in going fast the Honda. The other showed incredible speed ! I hope it will not be as the other american : coming, make 2, 3 years and then never come back ... Caselli as the potential to be a futur winner.
And congrats to Lopez Contardo and Jakes, who made great race. Lopez was really fast, but did as always too many mistakes, and Jakes was the Novitskiy of the moto class. First of all to do a good Dakar, you have to be reliable.

Cars : the race was a bit dissapointing after Nasser's retirement. But nice victory for Peterhansel, and nice podium for de Villiers and Novitskiy. I'm a bit disapointed by the Toyotas. Alvarez and de Villiers showed great speed, but something missed ... Toyota should work with them.
The most important fact for me is the come back of the buggys for the victory. Qatar's and SMG were incredible.
In term of drivers, I would retain the come back of Guerlain Chicherit. I wasn't big fan of him, but what a race ! Same thing for Chabot. First year with a car able to win, and a very good race ! I hope he will be back next year.
Another good come back is Terranova. Really nice perfs with his old BMW. And of course Gordon, with his so own style.

Trucks : what a race between Tratra's, Kamaz and Iveco ! And nice victory for Kamaz ! They are back :) Even if they didn't do an impressive race ... but the most important, another time, is the reliabilty ... and this year Kamaz were, and other no.
Rally too many mistakes in Iveco. Stacey rolled two many times, de Rooy made mistakes and had mechanical problems ...
And Tatra deserves a strong team. It seems to be hard to fight without a good team with them. Kolomy and Loprais are good drivers ... would be better for them if they drive together in a strong team :)

vino_93: I was told today a thing I didn't know. Next year there will be new regulations for trucks with smaller engines. Now Loprais used Deutz engine with 16 litre capacity but Kolomý had engine Buggyra with only 12,5 litre capacity which shall be ok for 2014 so we might find him even stronger next year.
